    Chicken souvlaki dinner
    Victor H.

By far One of the best chicken souvlaki I have had in a long time The chicken was cooked to perfection, nice and juicy and not over cooked. The potatoes were beyond flavourful And The Greek salad was loaded with feta cheese( in my opinion what makes a Greek salad!) Only four stars because this is my first of many future visits It could be raised to five stars if they meet my high standards Let's see But The potential is there with their great souvlaki dinner

I have been here a couple of times now. Once was years ago when I used to work in the area and recently I came back for dinner with some family. It is a classic diner style ambiance, very comfortable and can't go wrong with it. I found the service to be friendly and prompt with everything. The main dish I like to order at these types of diners is a souvlaki dinner, this time I opted for the chicken Souvlaki. My husband had the pork. The tzatziki sauce had too much dill and although still enjoyable, it wasn't great. Otherwise the meal was average. Nothing special but everything was well and decently cooked. Since I've had better Souvlaki elsewhere, I am not likely to come back here.

Great food and quantity but high prices. Would recommend a small version of each dish for 50% of the cost. Especially if pivoting the business toward the younger crowd. The chicken salad for example was enough for 3 people at $20. Love the friendliness of the staff and small town feel when inside the restaurant. Will definitely come back. Must try: souvlaki, french onion soup, potato skins

Great all around menu. They have everything (Canadian, Greek, Italian) just to name a few. If I'm not sure what to eat around my area this place is the place to go since their menu is so vast. Portions are massive with great prices. Service could be better but most of the staff is older so it's expected.

Pork souvlaki 2021 during the pandemic.. tasted bland and the pork was pink??? Is that normal? Not as tasty as pre-pandemic

I come to this restaurant for special and social occasions. The food before the pandemic was delicious!! I'm not sure exactly what happened because their pork souvlaki before the pandemic, was flavorful and not pink. My pork souvlaki was pink today and they used pork shank instead... or some different cut of pork. It wasn't as tasty and it was dry... and pink? I hope mine was cooked properly. Maybe today was an off day so I'll give them another chance... but look at the difference between before and after the pandemic... these are the same dishes, pork souvlaki

Mediocre food. Terrible service tonight. It took almost an hour to serve a sandwich and four orders of souvlaki. Dreadful.

It was a really nice spot for a special night... cozy, welcoming, and not overly loud. We enjoyed everything we ordered, but the saganaki was definitely the standout. The wait staff brought it out and poured a shot of liquor over the cheese before lighting it on fire at the table, which added a fun touch without feeling gimmicky. Beyond the presentation, the cheese itself was excellent... crisp on the outside, warm and soft inside, and really well seasoned. Easily something I'd come back for. The mango ginger spritz was light and refreshing, not too sweet, the Australian lamb chops were cooked nicely, tender, and full of flavor without being overly heavy. We ended the perfect night with baklava and vanilla ice cream. It was flaky, just sweet enough to be shared between us. Portions weren't huge, but we left feeling content. We did have to make a reservation well in advance, which I'd definitely recommend. Prices feel appropriate for a special occasion rather than an everyday dinner. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Overall, a great experience and a place I'd happily come back to.

We started with the Philoxenia special appetizer -- a striking tower of thinly sliced zucchini, eggplant, and cheese, crisped to perfection. Paired with a cheesy dip, it was an irresistible combination of crunch and comfort. For mains, we ordered the beef mousakka and a Greek-style paella. The paella was a standout -- a flavor-packed dish loaded with mussels, shrimp, and calamari in a rich tomato sauce over tender orzo. Dessert came with table-side theatrics. Layers of phyllo for the baklava were heated in honey, then stacked with ice cream -- a creative and indulgent finale that built anticipation as we watched. Service was attentive without ever feeling overbearing. We felt genuinely well cared for throughout the evening. On our way out, we noticed a gorgeous garden-style patio at the entrance. Next time, we'll be requesting a table there for sure.

It's the kind of space that encourages ordering a half litre of wine (their house versions are only $27) and easing into the evening. A basket of warm, crusty bread starts the meal, with our server snipping dried oregano right into the olive oil - a fragrant, rustic touch. A thick, zesty red pepper hummus also arrives for those who prefer a spread over a dip. Philoxenia offers calamari ($30.95) grilled or fried. The appetizer consists of two sizeable portions of squid with a rather tasteless "house sauce" (a seafood sauce and mayo concoction?) on the side. The calamari itself was fresh, though I wish the thicker end had been cooked slightly longer, since it bordered on gelatinous. Skip the house sauce and pair it with the roasted pepper hummus instead; it works surprisingly well. The lamb chops ($59.95) are the star: four beautifully grilled chops served with a thick smear of tzatziki, soft lemony potatoes, and simply sautéed vegetables (broccoli and green beans). For me, it's these minimally fussed-over dishes that makes for quintessential Greek dining. We added the grilled vegetables ($27.95) on the side, though there really wants a lot of vegetables. Think two thin slices of zucchini and eggplant, a single roasted carrot's worth, and a couple rings of grilled onion. What is there is delicious - drizzled with balsamic and sprinkled with feta - but for a dish centered around vegetables, I expected more. For vegetarians, a mound of rice and lemon potatoes help round it out into a decent main. One thing I genuinely appreciated about Philoxenia is they don't try to rush you. It's a restaurant that lets you linger, offering a leisurely meal in a quiet, spacious dining room with plenty of breathing room between tables... something that's increasingly rare in Toronto's newer, sardine-can-style restaurants. Philoxenia nails that cozy, unhurried Greek dining experience that makes you want to stay a little longer and sip a little more wine.

The ordering process was not user friendly. Advertised deals were not charged as promoted until after the order was actually placed. The categories of food were itemized all over the place, so you weren't sure you were getting what you wanted as if it were a small combo, a larger dinner, or a la carte. The food itself was worth nowhere near the prices charged. For $20.89 before tip and taxes, I got a regular 355 mL can of domestic pop, a lunch sized pita that was completely burnt, and a side of frozen fries. Everyone's chicken was dry as a bone, and even the rice was as dessicated as cardboard. The only decent items were the Greek salad, and the pork which was able to withstand its level of char because it's not chicken. They didn't deliver one of the said cans of pop, which was charged and paid for at $3 for a la carte because it wasn't ordered as part of a preset combo. Add to the order the suggested 20% tip pushing $50, and the total customer experience result is that we'll never order from there again, or bother trying them as walk ins Never again.

The rice was actually a lot better than I expected. I know it's just a side, but rice at times from other Greek places isn't that great, and this was much better. My wife had the mix grill plate, and I helped. She absolutely loved the lamb. It was largely over the quality and the prep was fairly standard, but there's nothing wrong with that. The other parts didn't jump out, but were still perfectly good. The service was very attentive.

Having had moussaka ($33.95) at more chain-like Greek restaurants, Pantheon's version is lighter…read moreand fresher tasting. The potato layer feels fluffy and sandwiches thinly sliced eggplant, so the aubergine is rather pronounced. The ground beef mixture wasn't overly spiced and even the bechamel sauce was a thin layer, so it toasts the top but doesn't saturate the slice. Ultimately, it's not heavy so you could get through a full portion. A flaming saganaki ($19.95), the pan fried kefalotiri cheese, is a staple in Canadian Greek restaurants. It seems touristy to order but there's something endearing about setting a piece of cheese on fire and yelling "opa"! For me, the dish is more for the atmosphere than taste. Pantheon pan fries the cheese well, so it develops a crust even prior to flambeeing and serves it as a thick gooey slice. If only the accompanying bread wasn't so dry and mealy, a good saganaki calls for a better complement. Almost all their mains arrive with a sizeable Greek side salad that's smartly served first containing ample amounts of crumbled feta and some tomato, cucumbers, and onion over romaine. Their dressing is different, tamer and while still acidic there's a sweetness to it. Not sure, but perhaps they use a red wine vinegar and then blend the ingredients together so it's better combined? With the fishkebob souvlaki ($36.95) I was expecting fish, but it's really a seafood kebob containing shrimp, calamari and mushroom. It's cooked well with a faint grilled aroma, very tender, and lightly salted. Sadly, my steamed vegetables were merely carrots and didn't have the delicious garlicky green beans included on my friends' plates. Luckily, there was plenty with the moussaka so I could augment mine. At least there was an ample portion of roasted lemon potatoes that were soft and fluffy with a refreshing pronounced citrus finish. Pantheon doesn't skimp on the lamb chops that arrive with the entrée. And if you can't decide on what protein you'd like, their menu also offers some as add-ons. The lamb chop by the piece ($11.95) was bit gamier than I'd like but was cooked to a perfect medium doneness. A complimentary honey cake arrives for the table and is almost like having baklava in cake form. Just watch out, as the moist crumbly cake is difficult to pick up with a fork. Don't waste a bit of this delicious dessert, just use your fingers.
