I've been going to Winam Hair Studio for almost a year now, and I've never been disappointed. The team does a great job handling multiple clients at the same time, switching off pretty seamlessly (although this may bother some people). The chat is easygoing and without drama, exactly how a hair salon should be. I have a LOT of hair and I always leave with a nice thinned out hair shape. Hillary squeezed me in for a last minute colour touch up , which I so appreciated because you want to look your best on your big day. Since then I have referred all of my friends to her and we all love her. I don't normally review hair salons because unless they do me wrong, it's all pretty much the same to me. However, Hillary at Winam is amazing. She and her staff made me feel like a princess. Gave me awesome espresso, washed and dried my hair, primped and pampered me and basically made me feel like going to the salon was like being queen for a day. That being said, let me talk about the cut. Sooo, I was hemming and hawing about whether or not to go short. The last time I did, I had years of regret and sadness. However, I've been enamored with pixie cuts lately so I was thinking maybe it was time to give it another shot. I was hoping Hillary could advise me on whether or now it would look good on me or match my face or hair. When I asked, I was surprised by her honest answer of deference. She basically said, she'll give me a cut that will be awesome and that she'll personally love but that won't mean that I will love how it looks on me. Which I totally understand. I have personally seen clients bitch out hairdressers for giving them exactly what they asked for. So I get it. She did say she could do short in the back that leads up to a longer look in the front which would look less shocking to me. I figured that would be the best of both worlds, so I went for that. You have to understand that I'm Japanese but I don't have Japanese hair. My hair is fine and wavy and tends to frizz. I don't naturally have the type of hair that rocks short cuts, and normally when I go to get a haircut I walk in expecting to get a good even cut and expect to walk out with my hair looking good but knowing the next day it will go back to its normal blah frizzed out look. Hillary did something that I've never had anyone do before. Instead of trying to force my hair to do things it doesn't want to do, she went with its natural tendencies and gave me a cut and style that I know my hair will accept on the daily. She also made me like and accept my hair, which is a first. It's actually not the style I was expecting... But the style she was suggesting was a bob I guess and I am just not in support of that style so I think that was my own fault. Since when she mentioned it, I nixed it. So I don't have length in the front, but I have to say I can't imagine liking that style more. Not sure if I'm gonna love the short hair forever but I'm gonna try to rock this style while it lasts. I just got the best haircut ever. Imagine that: the best haircut you've ever had. And you could have it! All you need to do is go see Hillary. What sort of sick intuition do you have to have to respond to someone's vague descriptions involving "red" and "shorter and kinda" with awesomenessness? Hillary's sort, that's what. ...and by sick, I meant awesome. She also plays great music and is genuine and interesting. My roommate/friend made a big excited fuss over how "completely adorable it is," but the better reactions were the ones I got walking home. I was very displeased with the simple haircut I received. I have curly hair so it's hard to find a hairdresser in general. I had low expectations, but the service along with the attitude of the hairdresser made the experience very unenjoyable... When I first entered the salon she made a comment that she doesn't like the people who get highlights so she doesn't offer that service which I thought was weird. When looking at my hair, right away the hairdresser was very harsh with it. She used an old brush that didn't look like it had been cleaned, she didn't even spray it down a little or use detangler (it felt like she was ripping my hair out). I then tried to explain exactly what I wanted, but then she cut me off a ton and just said what she thought would look good. She was very full of herself and especially her ability to cut curly hair so I thought I would just trust her. Right before she started the haircut, she set up her video camera to film WITHOUT MY PERMISSION...she said she could take it down after I asked why?? That was very rude. She was rude and overwhelming in general. She said the previous haircut I got which was at Supercuts was terrible and basically alluded to me being ignorant for not just looking up how to cut my own hair. Well, I can tell you going there would have been just about the same cut for half the price. I started to look at my hair after the cut, I was obviously displeased and thinking of how she could fix it. She started to rush me and told me I was "manhandling" my hair lol. Alright, alright. Being the horrid procrastinator that I am, I would start a review and then stop because my attention span is similar to that of a newborn puppy. I get distracted by the slightest things but I'm finally gluing myself to this chair and doing this because Hillary deserves every grand-spankin gold star this site has to offer. I had my hair cut by her about two weeks ago! I know, *slaps wrist* bad, Angel, bad! I, along with these lovely Yelpers below me & probably above me, have been seeking out a place to get my hair done because I was done with all of these salons charging me an arm and a leg to pay for a hair cut. I read the raving reviews about Hillary's magic touch and thought "What the heck!" Emailed her, sent her some photos of what I wanted, & sent her a novel about why I chose the cut haha. Even with writing the email to her, I was immediately comfortable in confiding in her about this new change because of all the reviews I had read about how comfortable and straight forward she can be. As dramatic as this is sounding, let me tell you, she is a miracle worker! When I told her about how I found her and how all these lovely people were writing the most amazing things about her, she was super humble about it. I loved that but she honestly does deserve all that credit. I had long, thick, Samoan hair (mid-back) and I wanted something new.. something fresh. Hillary knew exactly what it was I was aiming for and took me there. She looked at the pics I sent her, worked through my mane, & gave me something to really hold my head up high with. Best part is, like everyone else says, she's really laid back and easy to talk to... our conversations were filled with hilarity! :D. I love that she had such knowledge about the islands and how understanding she is about the culture. It's what makes you love her even more because she can really make you feel comfortable. It's (wo)manned by one person, the lovely Hillary herself. It's one chair in her little salon studio where all the magic happens, which is why it's prudent to schedule with her ahead of time. Email her, that's the best way! Guaranteed! I definitely suggest sending photos of what you might be looking into doing because she'll definitely hook it up. Price: Veeeery moderate price. That is what I was extremely excited about! It's a set price of $45. Honestly, it's the best deal I've seen so far and knowing that she does an extremely good job, it's almost too good to be true. Parking: she has a stall open for you but if anything, street parking isn't bad at all. I was able to get one on the spot. In my opinion, the location was easy for me to find. She sent me a pic of what her place looked like... drove over & saw it immediately. I Google-mapped her address just so I had a better visual of the area I was driving to. She has a little waiting area with couches, mags, a little fountain, & wind chimes. Gives off a feel-good vibe. Okay, before I finish, just to let you all know.. my cut didn't even take that long to do. Being that my hair was long and thick, I thought cutting and styling would take at least an hour or so. It ended up being about 45 minutes. I can't really say maybe that's how it is for all the cuts she does but I thought that was great as well. She works at a great pace and with awesome precision! Honestly I was a little sketched out when I first drove past Hillary's studio, because from the street it looks like a pretty normal Kapahulu house. But I was pleasantly surprised when I turned the corner to discover the comfortable intimate studio that Hillary set up. I kind of want to say that the best part of Hillary's haircuts are her conversations. Not only is she hilarious with so many amazing different stories about her life, but she also takes the time to learn about your lifestyle and how she can provide a haircut that will be convenient for your everyday life. I went to Winam because of their high ratings. And it must be super popular, because the only available time I could get was at 7AM. So I came in with super high expectations. Hillary was super friendly and happy. Frankly, I am not a morning person so I was mystified. How can someone be so happy so early in the morning? Answer: espresso. Delicious, FREE espresso. I was much happier afterward. So I opted for a dry haircut. Since I fell asleep with my hair wet, it was still kinda wet when I got there. But I thought it wouldn't be a problem since every salon I have been to always would wash/spray my hair anyways. WRONG. When she means dry haircut, it literally is a dry haircut. So I spent a good 30 minutes under the drier. Even though it was early in the morning, there were other customers. I guess since there is one main hairstylist, it kinda makes sense that she would have to go back and forth between customers. This was my only complaint. I personally feel weird because she would cut my hair and then walk away. Come back and go somewhere else for 5-10 minutes. Haha, maybe I'm just used to having my hair cut all at once. But the results were nice and I was happy with my haircut. The place is decorated really nicely. Hillary assessed my hair and asked lots of great questions about how much time I wanted to spend doing it, etc. She's very organic in her approach to hair cutting meaning that she let's hair "speak" to her and guide the cut rather than trying to make hair do something it's probably not going to want to. Every stylist I ever went to discouraged me from bangs because they...I don't know? Suck or something? Hillary suggested bangs for me and cut then in about 5 minutes. I love my bangs. Plus, the woman's a pleasure to talk to and she'll be straight forward with you about what looks good with minimal effort, unlike other salons that try to keep pushing you to do this and color that and buy this product so that you end up with a big tab after. She understands what to do if you just want to roll out of bed ready to go, so she's great for college and busy folk. I have been going to Hillary since she was at Macy's. Nobody does my bangs like she does! I will not let anybody touch my bangs except for her. I always get so excited to get home from college so she can finally do my hair! She never lets me down and makes me feel so comfortable and is so easy to talk to. Hilary and her team are amazing. From the perfect flat white upon arrival, to free meter feeding throughout, to a great attitude, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. But best of all, I got perhaps the best cut and color of my life. Hilary rescued me from over-bleached, fried out, horrible hair. She saved my color and perfected my cut so that it looks terrific whether I blow dry (almost never) or not. I can't believe I found an LA/SF/NY level salon in Honolulu... And so affordable to boot! Very easy to make an appointment online. Good haircut but if you have something set in mind you need to tell Hillary because she doesn't always listen (my experience). She does a great cut but can tend to do what she wants or feels would be best. I respect that but more then once have looked in the mirror a few days later and wished I had gotten the bangs or no layers. If you tell her you want 4" cut she may do 2" because of the way it falls.. good to get her professional opinion but speak your mind if you really do want 4 inches cut. Shampoo: If you're expecting a nice wash and scalp massage you're not going to get it here; at least I have never Color: Your appointment may be with Hillary but may end with one of the interns.
