I found Wynham studio on both Yelp and Google when I was looking for someone who was comfortable doing a dramatic cut. I've been considering a new hairdo for about two years and finally felt comfortable pulling the trigger. Off the website I was able to get Hilary's number and text her about my situation and desired haircut. I showed her photos of similar haircuts and described what I was looking for. I also showed her pictures of my current hair and of me holding my hair sort of how I was hoping the final cut would look. The text-based consult was great! Hilary was excited about the job, but also said I could go somewhere else if I wanted to get color done at the same time, since she only does haircuts. After telling the stylist she referred me to for color the same information I gave Hillary, she thought it best I go to Hillary for the cut and her for the color. I don't think everyone is comfortable doing this kind of dramatic cut, and I may have made her nervous when I said I was an artist educator. I ended up doing both appointments the same day, one right after the other this was fairly easy, since both locations were within walking distance of each other. I'm happy I had two experts each doing what they loved doing best! Winam Studio is above the Post Office on 11th Ave. in Kaimuki. I came in the afternoon (post lunch) on a weekday, and parking was fairly easy in the metered lot in the middle of the block, and I showed up right on time. The studio was clean and fun, with pops of color inspired by a Rubik's cube, and Hillary was ready for me. She'd been talking to someone in the waiting area, but stopped to attend to me immediately. There was one other person and her hairdresser in the studio. Hillary and I talked through the cut one more time, and she expressed gratitude about my specificity and the reference photos I brought. She asked her colleague for ideas before starting to firm up her plan of action. We had interesting conversation throughout the shampoo and cut, and Hillary even treated me to some theatrical snipping during the experience. This woman is an artist with her shears. She thought and walked me through her process the entire time, sculpting my hair with precision using only combs, shears, and razor blades, and even throwing in a bit of theatrical pins he that made me laugh. I kept a lock of my long hair for my son. It was an awesome collaboration! Both the cut and color turned out better than I could ever have imagined! It's comfortable and super low-maintenance. I don't have to wash my hair as often, don't sweat as much, and never need a hair tie. My hair looks amazing after simply messing it around with my fingers and flipping to the side. Friends that have known me for years have asked me why I hadn't had this haircut sooner. They tell me it fits my personality perfectly! Trying to restart trust in a salon after having a stylist you love leave is really hard. I really wanted to like Winam but unfortunately my experience was more than pretty rocky. Initially, I was stoked, given the website which looked professional, haircuts similar to what I wanted, and the online process to book was a breeze. I noted how much time the appointment was going to take, planned exactly between my classes, and made the drive down to Kaimuki. Getting parking was a madhouse, but after about 20 minutes of stalking yoga students, I finally found a place. I got upstairs to the studio and was somewhat uneasy after they tried multiple times to give me espresso, although I don't drink coffee. I sat for awhile and noticed what was going on: the owner/head stylist was training two other students or interns, and was juggling literally 7 clients at one time. At this point I should have known I made a mistake, but I had driven all that way and wasn't ready to leave empty handed. Once the owner came over to greet me, my appointment was already 17 minutes behind time. She asked me what I wanted, and I had the details and photos in hand. After telling her, she grilled me with an accusatory tone on how I knew the specific terminology of what the haircut was called, which was really weird. I am not a hairdresser, but I love this hair cut, and am very specific on what I want, that's why I know what it's called?? Despite my appointment, the owner took a walk in who was a friend of hers without an appointment in front of me, and then spent like 15 minutes telling everyone in the salon about his personal life. At this time, one of the interns took me back to wash my hair, and scrubbed my scalp so hard with her nails I was hurting for about 4 hours. She left me in the sink to blend colour for the other intern's client, despite that I was dripping, uncomfortable, and at this point very sure I made a bad decision. I was then taken to the cutting chair, where I told the stylist that I loved my old stylist so much, and was really struggling with trusting another person after going to one person for a year and a half who did exactly what I wanted with my hair. She then had the nerve to tell me that my stylist made too many layers and didn't know what he was doing, and then continued to criticize his work. This is not the way to build trust or confidence with your brand new clients. Needless to say, when the hair cut was done, I was ready to burn rubber out of there and never return. She still said "hope we made the cut! come back soon!" Never. Learn from my horrible mistake. The hair cut was a mess, I felt like an ugly boy, and I was about 25 minutes late for my next schedule item because they took so long with her awkward juggling act with students, too many clients, and not enough focus on their work. Worst of all, the owner was super sick with a cold or something. All throughout her cutting, she would wipe her nose on her arm and hand, and then continue to use said arms and hands in cutting my hair! This was super unprofessional and really disgusting. I know it's hard to take days off, especially when you're the only one licensed to cut hair, but take some meds, excuse yourself to blow your nose and then wash your hands and for goodness sake, don't wipe your snot into your brand new client's hair. Aww man....I am so bummed about my experience here. So sad to write this review. The visit started out great, easy to make appointment online without any hassle. I was greeted by friendly staff and a lovely "zen" like environment. Energy in the room was buzzing in a good way, where you are comfortable singing along with the music while reading magazines and sipping the flat white they offered me. I quickly realized the 4-5 other women in the salon were all clients getting cuts/services done by Hilary with the help of her 2 assistants. Hilary is high energy, juggling 1,000 balls at the same time. She's directing her assistants under her watchful eye constantly giving directions about color, toner, timing, parking meter refills and so forth. It is chaotic and seemingly high energy!! I've never seen any stylist juggle 5 clients at the same time! Ever. Keeping an open mind, I figured it would be okay so long as the cut was awesome, I didn't care. Her assistant Sharon did a fabulous job of applying color and gloss while chatting with me. After waiting in the shampoo bowl with wet hair for a bit it was finally my turn. The thing is though, with Hilary so distracted she barely did any consultation before she started chopping chunks. At that point, it was too late to say anything as long pieces of my hair were lying on the floor. Boo. Before I knew it she was done - it reminded me of waiting to see a doctor then only getting like 2 seconds of their time. Sharon came over to blow dry my hair. I figured the "final touch" cutting, texturizing, etc would come after I was dry. Nope. That was that. Done. Bye. Open mind. Open mind. I figured once my new hair settled down it would be good, different but good. I mean, that as the whole reason for trying something new. So two days later -- I love the color, it looks fantastic. The haircut, well its very blunt, disorganized and seemingly haphazard...the shape resembles a mullet hairdo which will take forever to grow out. I have been coming here since 2014 and found Hilary and her team to be very competent at what they do. But, in the last couple of times, the quality of service has drastically reduced and I'm not quite sure what the reason for that is. I have thought about it long and hard whether or not to write a negative review since my previous experience with her was so nice, but I just kept thinking back to what she said to me "go ahead and leave a bad review, no one will believe you" That just didn't sit right with me, even if it was said in a jokingly way. I made an appointment for 6:30 am and showed up 10 min early, she was finishing up with another client whom she was playfully harassing. The whole time that I was there Hilary was preoccupied with this other client. I had shown her a photo of what I would like my hair to be and when it was all said and done, it looked like crap. I told myself to go somewhere else last time and remembered why I stopped coming here 2 years ago. Now, I live by the Golden rule and I treat everyone like how I would like to be treated, and I really didn't appreciate being treated this way especially I'm a long time customer. Just yesterday I received an email, that my appointment I made with Hillary was cancelled. There wasn't any request to change times or day. Okay, so I was going to reschedule online when I decided to read Winam's reviews. Winam Hair Salon has great reviews but the bad reviews seemed all so familiar. I've had my haircut by Hillary, probably 5 times & each time walked out with a haircut I never asked for. I never said anything because the quality of the cut was great, but what is agreed upon & the results didn't match. She seems like a nice lady, but she'll get fixated into multiple subjects while she cutting your hair. Plus she usually is juggling multiple clients so your time with her is totally divided & just extremely lengthy. My last haircut by Hilary was a total nightmare to style daily & it took for ever to grow out. Because I asked for a length right above my shoulders, she cut it right to the length past my ears. I have not gotten a bad haircut from Hillary, just from good to excellent. Whether the length is a little shorter or longer than I expected, the cut has always added livelihood to my curls. Every single year, I suffer and sweat my way through the hot summer while keeping my hair long. And every year, I lose patience around October and chop it to shoulder length. I inevitably get sick of it and grow it out again, determined to grow it out even longer than the year before. It is an endless cycle. This year, I decided to cut it a little bit shorter (why not? It'll grow back), and I am SO happy that my Yelp salon-hunting led me to stumble across the Winam Hair Studio. First of all, their online scheduling system is easy, convenient, and absolutely fantastic. Their prices are also shockingly reasonable. Haircuts for $35? More importantly, though, my experience with Winam was easily the best that I have encountered in any salon. Hillary is welcoming, sassy, funny, and gregarious, and her assistant is also lovely. While we waited a couple of minutes, we were offered a selection of drinks- fresh espresso, mango iced tea, etc. This is certainly not something that is necessary or expected for them to offer, but it is SUCH a nice touch. My wonderful, patient boyfriend had opted to accompany me on my haircut adventure, and Hillary was quick to see his fancy-schmancy camera and point out some of the awesome (and self-created) artwork that he might be able to get good shots of. Moving on to the haircut: Hillary asked me questions about my lifestyle and what I had in mind, and she snipped while tousling away at my hair to figure out what she was working with. As infuriated as I had been with my unruly long hair, I was on a mission of vengeance and I wanted it CUT OFF. Hillary's cut is the shortest that I have had my hair since I was around 7, and I absolutely love it. My hair is typically difficult to manage, but the choppy, subtly angled cut that she gave me forces it to behave itself with minimal effort on my part. It is semi-permanent bed-head, but not in the lumpy way. It has lift and body, and it looks better tousled around than it does fresh from the hairbrush. I could not be happier with it. Fast forward two years and owner Hillary J. now has her own shop in Kaimuki right above the Kaimuki post office. Her studio is chic, clean, and does not have that chemical smell that most hair salons have. I love it. I also love how you can make, cancel, or change your appointments online. I've been to Winam Studio twice and Hillary is hands down the best hairstylist I've ever gone to. Most places take about an hour half to cut my hair, she did it in half the time and triple the value. She knows exactly what works for your face shape, and will always do her best to make it look like you want. I came in wanting to chop off my blonde balayage which has been growing for about eight months now. She knew exactly what I wanted and even saved me from having to color my hair back to my original color like I initially intended to do. Her cuts are great because she shapes it so that you won't have to cut your hair for months, which saves so much money, especially if you're a broke college student. The last time I got my hair cut by her was last year December, and the layers and crown that she cut are still intact! Hillary is such an outgoing figure, you'll never be bored during your appointment. I go with the green cut ($40) which is a great deal compared to other places, and bonus - bang trims are free, even if you didn't get them done by Hillary. College students can't tip more than 2% apparently, which was a bummer because she was so great. She also gave out free samples of Paul Mitchell shampoo's, probably a limited time promotion for the holidays, so my suggestion would be to book as soon as possible. read more

What kind of a weirdo gets their hair cut when on vacation a continent away? This girl. I was on vacation in Honolulu, but meanwhile I had just moved to new city so I was in between stylists. I decided Hawaii would be my best chance of finding a stylist who would know how to cut Asian hair. I found Winam on yelp and was thrilled to find out that the green cut is a dry cut. Lemme tell you about my hair: Every time I sit in a new stylist's chair, they exclaim "Woah, you have a lot of hair." Really thick, coarse, long hair. Ponytail elastics are single-use items for me. Dry cuts always work best on me and not many stylists do it. I showed up with my hair washed and blow-dried. Hillary confirmed that yes, I did have a lot of hair. I told her I wanted to keep the length but I don't mind having a lot of it chopped out with lots of texture and layers; anything to lighten it up. I was confident in her, and she was not afraid! She went at it like Edward Scissorhands - super fast and hair just kept coming out. I ended up with a cool long shag cut. Weeks after coming home, I've gotten tons of the compliments from strangers. My mother liked it, and she always hates my haircuts! The crazy thing is that this cut was only $35. The same quality would cost at least $140 here in DC so I'm trying to figure out how to work a haircut as justification for regular trips to Hawaii. read more

Getting my hair done at Hillary's just upped my cool factor. Seriously. The studio, cooler than most...the ladies taking care of me, cool without even trying...and now with my new do I feel cool enough to keep coming here. I was a little nervous when I first came in (3rd salon in approx. A year), but the warmly decorated space and cool, casual, girl chat of Hillary, her assistant, and patrons, welcomed me. Now when I say cool, don't think Gossip girl cliques cool, think laid back, chill, hipster cool. I was brought to the chair and as Hillary trimmed someone elses hair she helped me decide what hair color to do. (let me just mention that I've been a dirty blonde ;) most of my life and that I've carefully avoided flipping my hair color as often as you change the TV channels) But I was ready for a change! We settled on a dark brown/red blend and I took the plunge. The colorist (Hillary's assistant...feel so bad I can't remember her name) sat me down and washed my hair (giving a quick massage that I wished had been longer) and proceeded to put the color on. It is a special gloss color that doesn't use ammonia so it didn't burn or have a crazy chemical smell. Then set a heat lamp to my head. I was offered tea or coffee, and a biscotti. Sooner then I expected, it was ready to wash and cut. Hillary have me a choppy layered cut that was different enough to make me happy but kept my length. It's been two weeks since I saw her and my hair hasn't faded much (as she said gloss color does) and I still love the look (as does everyone who sees it -except my hubby...but he hates change). Love-Love-Love Hillary and Kristy. I found Winam Hair Salon online after Google searching " Best Hair Salon in Honolulu." Elle Magazine 2 years running. Was apprehensive since I had been going to my gal at Paul Brown for 13 years. But it was time for change when a simple cut and highlight was upped to $245... I found the salon beautifully decorated and Hillary very inviting. I opted for just a consult and cut for the first time (change is hard for me). Hillary listened, asked about hair my regimine (flat iron, blow dryer, etc ). Yes! Guilty! After my first cut I was hooked! Hillary is like a drug, you just have to keep going back for more. It's never the same boring cut, small talk, good bye. She offers her opinion on color, takes into account what season it is, hair condition.... Conversation is NEVER boring and in the 3-chair service area all patrons talk with each other. Hillary had an"open approach" when it comes to servicing customers. She will go back and forth between clients but never once did I feel neglected because she stepped away from me to consult with another client. If you need exclusivity, then this salon is not for you... I admit, her hours of operation are not of the norm but they work for me. Bright and early 6:30am and its great! Expresso...Yes! I went to Hillary for the first time about a month ago. I heard about her through a Lei Chic email (about Winam and J Salon opening new locations). Although there was a slight mix up with my appointment time, Hillary apologized profusedly and totally made up for it. So she gives great customer service because others who work with customers would have just been like, sorry. Also, I should mention I booked my cut probably a month or more in advance and she made adjustments to her schedule between the time I made my appointment and the date of the appointment. Anyway, she's on Schedulicity now, so it shouldn't be a problem anymore! Scheduling is now a cinch. Anyway, she starts cutting my hair and is cutting in layers, but starting way higher up on my head than I'm used to. So I'm freaking out a little but don't say anything. Something told me to trust her. And I LOVED my haircut! LOVED. Somehow she managed to give me something different but the same. I've basically had the same cut for over a decade, with or without bangs, and I didn't think anyone could cut my hair in a way that was within my comfort zone but also very different (to me). I have a feeling though that if anyone could get me to venture out of my comfort zone, it would be her! This morning, I went in for a bang trim. Fastest bang trim I have ever had, and it looks fabulous! I'm so happy I gave this place a try! After booking my appt. online I received a confirmation email with LOCATION and PARKING information. I ended up parking on the street meters (limit 1 hr) instead of the metered parking lot (limit is 2 hrs) right behind the place, either way it worked out fine, they have quarters available in a small container which you can use for your meter. When I walked in I was very surprised at how nice the inside looked. The ATMOSPHERE is very relaxing and soothing everything in there is modern chic and sleek. As I waited for Hillary to finish up her appointment she offered me ESPRESSO along with some treats...that was a definite plus. When it was finally time for my HAIRCUT I told her I wanted bangs but had been told before they wouldn't look good on me, so I asked for her opinion. I just found my new fav hair stylist!! Seriously... Hillary is amazing and I can't believe what luck I had in finding her. I woke up at 730am and randomly decided I wanted to get my hair cut since xmas is almost here. Instead of going to my normal hair dresser, I decided to look on yelp and see what I would find. I typed in "hair salon" and the first thing that popped up was Winam Hair Studio. I noticed that it got all 5 star reviews AND the best part of it all was that it was 1 minute away from my apt! I was thinking how convenient and perfect.. only problem was hoping I could get a last min appt with her. So I called at 8am on the dot and she answered right away. She was able to book me a 915am appt and I was stoked since it's usually hard to get appts on the same day anywhere. Since it was so close to my place, i was in no rush. I found her little studio easily and she had a garage to park my car. Hillary was very friendly and welcoming.. made me feel very comfortable. I loved her personality, she was very outgoing & blunt! She also took the time to ask me some questions about my hair and how I style it etc. I showed her a couple pictures of what I wanted and she pretty much told me that she would work with what would match my bone structure. The end result... she gave me exactly what I wanted & more! I loved the spunkyness of my hair. I told her I wanted something a little more "edgy" but nothing too crazy and that is just what she did :D I was so happy since this is what I've been wanting for awhile but every time I go to my old hairstylist she would do the exact same thing and not what I said I wanted. Hillary really LISTENED to what I wanted and also gave me some input & ideas. I won't be going to anyone else from now on. So glad that I FINALLY found a hair stylist that I like and does what I want. I showed my mom and my sister my hair cut and they loved it! Hillary is great and I will be def going back to her soon for my color :) Oh and I forgot to add... she is very reasonable with the cost. $45 for a haircut.. that's a steal! Cutting your long hair into a never-done-before short hairstyle is a huge scare, so I knew I needed a great hairstylist to ease my fears about cutting it. I actually found Hillary on yelp and decided to check it and and if the salon is as good as everyone says. And it was all true :) Hillary is hilarious and really knows her stuff (taught me a thing or two about hair), the salon environment is really cool, and I like that she is conscious and considerate of those who don't want to spend a ton on a haircut (her green cut: 35$!) My hair turned out beautiful and I am definitely going back to see her again. I'm happy I went with a short style. Just got home from another great cut and color at the Winam Hair Studio. While I was getting my hair done, a political solicitor stopped by to drop off some brochures and marveled at how nice the place was. Hill didn't pay her to do it -- and I know, because Hill would never pay anyone who smelled like that to do a random salon-spotting. All joking aside, the Winam studio is seriously cute and small and comfortable, and I always get compliments on my hair after Hillary's done with it. That's not because I tell her how to do a good job, either: For the most part, I just let her do whatever she wants. I know that I could totally tell her what to do if I wanted to, though, 'cause that's how she rolls: If there's something you specifically want (like orange -- I like orange), she will make it happen. . . . I don't leave Yelp reviews often, but I was so happy with my experience at Winam! Hilary and the gals really know their stuff and tag team clients in a way that works. I'm always nervous to find a stylist when I'm wanting a short cut. I wanted a short cut, not too fussy, will look good after the pool or beach, NOT a mom cut, edgy, but feminine. Lol, picky much? Hilary understood exactly what I was saying. She not only gave me an awesome wash and wear cut, she nailed my highlights and cut my hair in a way that kept in mind my lifestyle and the texture of my hair. I can't get my hair done every 6-8 weeks, so she gave me something that will still look great as it grows until I can come again. The espresso and mochi they bring you is icing on the cake! A few things to note, when you book online, don't take that time frame seriously, lol. I booked a 45 minute time slot for cut and color, but I was there two hours. Also, the prices must have gone up because the cut and color when you book says $85-$120, however my total was $130 (and my hair is short). Still totally worth it, though, I couldn't get upset because it was such a great experience! Although I would have brought more cash to be sure I had plenty. Come with cash or check, she doesn't accept credit. As for parking, if you don't want to run down and add quarters if you go over the two hour limit, just park behind the Goodwill across Waialai, it's $6 for the day. read more

I wish I could give more than 5 stars. I've wanted to get a shorter cut for so long, but every hairdresser that I've gone to resisted because of how thick my hair is. When I walked into Winam today, Hilary not only welcomed my short hair idea, but was excited about it and gave great feedback on what to do with the fringe. Everyone that works there is so friendly and supportive! Not only was I stoked about the free coffee, but I had a blast talking to everyone there and getting the best haircut I've ever gotten as well! I can't believe the haircuts are only $45, I will definitely be making my way back here every time I come back to visit home. I am absolutely OBSESSED with my cut!! read more

These ladies were great. Let me just start by saying this was my first ever haircut at 28 years old, and I have had long polynesian hair all my life and decided to go short and do a pixie cut. I had the utmost trust in my stylist Hillary...i didn't know what she was going to do and gave her free range to do what she felt looked good for my face and she did exactly that. Hillary gives a great cut! I have super curly hair, easy to make it look like a mess in the wrong hands. I've found maybe 4 stylists in my life who can cut hair, she's one of them. I've lived in NYC, D.C. and sought experts, and paid high prices. In the end, it simply comes down to being trained properly, and continuing your education. I've gotten my hair cut twice here, and feel the style is great. She's specific, which means you have to be, but not everyone is wired the same way. In the end, it's the cut that matters to me, and Hillary is great at what she does. Highly recommend! read more

Update- cut lasted a few weeks then it was junk. I finally went in to get a cut from my lost, then found again stylist and he said it looked like I went to a butcher. I actually had big chunks in the back. It was so uneven and crooked - bobs are pretty straight forward. Oh, Winam! I had a baby and didn't cut my hair for like two years and then went to a different place because I was rushing and regretted it within a month! I went back to Winam and remembered why I have to keep going there. Hilary is magic. The cut itself is great, so flattering and natural, works with your hair. But it's been a couple months now and the way it grows out - it's just so good!! She's a magician. How does she do it?? I had a lot of hair fall out after having the baby so I had this little short regrowth hairs plus regular long hairs. Hilary put in layers all through and there is so much movement , even months later, but also kept the length. I love it. Even my weird regrowth baby hairs can kind of camouflage with all the movement. I think the prices went up a little bit since I first came here - it used to be thirty something and now it's maybe forty something ? But it's so worth it. This was my first time visiting Winam Studio and Hillary really did a goob job that beyond my expectation! So I really want to leave a good review about this hair studio. I am from Taiwan and I used to go to Japanese hair salon cuz I always had bad experiences with American stylist. However, my Japanese stylist quits her job so I really had to find a new one. Since this salon has good reviews and price is decent, so I thought I just gave it a try. I requested a Green Hair cut ($35) and I just wanted to make my hair shorter and lighter. As I mentioned, I did not have any high expectations about American stylist, thus when Hillary asked " what style do you want", I just told her " I want a short hair", and also I shower her what style I DO NOT want. Then she told me her opinion and started cutting. Anyways~ the result came out really really nice! To be honest, I love it!! This style could be the BEST haircut I got even compared to other Japanese stylist!! I look more refresh, light, and younger! My husband was with me on that day and he also loves my new hairstyle. Next time when I want a haircut, I will go back to Hillary and ask her to cut a same hairstyle! Haha. I give her 4 stars is becuz Hillary is too busy, basically she is the only stylist in the salon so she has to be multitasking. I was a little worried in the beginning cuz I worried she might not pay too much attention on my hair. However, she still did a impressive job.
