I always struggled with finding a hairstylist who will be able to cut curly hair. I was nervous and skeptical going in, but I knew the moment I walked in she was a pro. The way she would talk about my pattern and my layers already told me that she knew what she was doing. First, she dry cut some of my curls. Then she washed, massaged, and straightened my hair, then cut some more of it while It was straightened to make sure it had an even finish both ways. she also gave amazing advice on how to keep my hair healthy. All of that was included in a 120 price which is a price you cannot find anywhere else. My hair turned out amazing straightened, and I know once I turn it back to curly it will look even better! Curly haired girls this is the place to go! read more

Yes, yes! I should have listened to my hair stylist, I shouldn't have bleached my curly hair for a temporary look, and I definitely shouldn't have gone to an untested salon where the stylists hardly spoke English... Live and learn, the HARD way!!! Anxiously awaited my appointment with Monique. She was ready, confident she could correct the bleached blond heroin addict look I was trying to hide... Monique was true to her word, color corrected the mess I was stuck with since May 2024, and SAVED my curly hair! Hallelujah, I look better than normal, didn't go bald, and I'm eternally grateful. No more spur of the moment "try me" messes for me! Monique is my girl!!! read more

If you have "mixed-chick" super thick, long, curly hair like me, your hair will reach an entire different level once you're on the island (HI) for some time. After attempting to try every product created to control and weigh down the now even bigger mound atop that I could barely put in a proper bun...Hawaii Hair start to take center stage (think SNL's Roseanne Roseannadanna). BIG and SUPER THICK! Being that the island has sooo many people with hair similar to mine, I knew there had to a Master curly-frizzy-hair expert to tame my coif. Let the scavenger hunt begin! I set my mind to find the the best of the best that REALLY know how to work with my hair type. After all of the research, excellent reviews, and word of mouth, the heavens opened up and led me to Ms.Monique who is certainty Unique..! Not only is she extremely professional but also but with each and ever step she takes, she is educating you or what, how, when, and why about your hair. She was able to tell the products I was using (without even asking me first) and she thoroughly explained why it was the incorrect product, what it has done, what is will do if I continue to use it, what other products would better benefit my hair and how my actual hair type works (hopefully that makes sense). Sorry to make this so long but I can't express just how grateful I am to have found her. I could go on for hours....She is AMAZING!! I can't thank you enough, Monique! \0/ You're THE BOMB!! read more

First off, Monique is FANTASTIC! She is very personable, informative, patient, and just a lovely human being that has a passion for hair care and hair styling. My granddaughter has curly hair and Monique patiently educated her on hair care, explained why she wanted to layer her hair and genuinely cared how my granddaughter felt about the process and products. Monique doesn't sell you on products, rather she educates you on the contents of the products and what you should look for in hair care products. The first picture is my granddaughter's hair before Monique and the second is after. The curls are back!! You must give Monique a try, she will not disappoint. read more

Unique Monique - BEFORE, hair is wavy without defined curls - Hair Stylists Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

Monique has done a wonderful job with my hair. She is the 5th stylist I've seen for a short cut that flatters my wavy frizzy med-thick hair, and is the 1st stylist I've been truly happy with! She uses a combination of wet and dry cuts. For the dry cuts she finds each wave clump and cuts at a flattering spot. Because of this, my waves lie nicely now without odd pieces sticking out. (I have a combination of s-waves and spirals.) I believe she specializes in curly hair.  It's unique to find someone who can create a modern and flattering hairstyle with frizzy, big, wavy hair. I also love how she supports all hair textures and will work with what you have instead of against it. Monique is kind and friendly too, and really makes me comfortable in her chair. She also communicates well. I feel understood, like we share the same vision for my hair, which is a first for me. As personal confirmation of her skill, I was complimented and hit on a few times after my cuts from her. XD That's also a first for me with short hairstyles. read more

Monique is a sexy shiny unicorn who will give you sexy shiny unicorn hair. You will be such a sexy shiny unicorn after she does your hair that you will attract sexier, shinier unicorns who will want to make shiny unicorn babies with you. Make the unicorn babies with your unicorn lover and then send them to Monique for an awesome haircut. Okay, for the real review: Monique's hair cut she did on me 6 months earlier grew out beautifully and my hair still LOOKED amazing. However, since it was 6 months, I knew I was overdue to give my split ends the snip snip and the rest of my hair some loving. If I'm being honest, I really just wanted Mo to touch my head again. She knew exactly what I wanted and was so fast. Her wash is the best thing you will ever feel. You honestly DO NOT KNOW how great your hair is going to come out or how great you are going to feel until after you've had a cut with her. Imagine if you had that perfect hair you always wanted- your hair will be better after Monique does it. She is the best and she still charges less than the majority of the premiere salons. I'm moving in August, but NO ONE but Monique will touch my hair. I will simply have to find a way to book with her when I visit home. Oh, she is also a philanthropist! She could be styling hair for celebrities or royalty, but instead she keeps her services local so the people of hawaii can look good. Someone hand over the nobel peace prize. Appointments with Monique can take a few weeks or even a couple months to schedule, especially if you're on a tight schedule too. Don't give up! She's worth it. Her magic hands will solve all your problems. Oh, and if she recommends kerastase and you gasp a little at the price, just buy the damn stuff! She is the all-knowing Monique, don't even question it! read more

Monique is a wonderful stylist and a great person! I am African-American and have a lot of naturally curly hair. She tames it better than anyone else I have ever been to. It has to be a combination of her styling abilities and the products she uses. Both visits to her have left me extremely happy and my last visit was even better than the first! Monique gave me full highlights and a style, with a trim. She blow dried and flat ironed relatively quickly (and I have a lot of hair!) and left my hair straighter and softer and bouncier than I have ever felt it!! The shop itself is great! She usually plays music (to which she encourages you to sing to your hearts content if that is what you're into) and provides some drink refreshments. The experience is wonderful! I appreciate her styling tips and conversation. Thank you Monique!!! You listened to me and knew exactly what I wanted with my color! Amazing results. read more

Don't know why I waited so long to review someone so important! I mean hair and eyebrows can make or break you, right? I started going to Monique when she worked at J Salon. The vibe there was just not my cup o' tea. Anyway, I followed Monique over to Heaven on Earth and really love her new space. It's like her own little salon since she has a private space and we get to gab and talk about whatever the whole time she's working her magic on my hair. So down to biniss....Ms. Monique KNOWS hair. You can tell her exactly what you want and that's exactly what you'll get. BUUUUUUT, my advice is to just give her some general parameters, like you want to keep the length or you want bangs now, and just let her do her thing. I swear I prance out of the salon feeling like Miss Universe after Monique does my hair. She's styled it with my natural curl, straight, loose curls...every look is always perfect. So this isn't really a complaint, but more of a testament to her ridiculous skills. I have been trying to grow my bangs out for a while, but I'll usually have her trim them up so the ends look fresh. I swear, just a trim from her makes me want to keep them cause she always makes them look so cute, but it's like Olivia from Jerseylicious said, "you just don't marry bangs." Also, for me, the ultimate test is how long a cut lasts. I know it's gross but sometimes I won't cut my hair for MONTHS and my cut from Monique still looks good. Her skills are just beyond, beyond...if that makes sense. To all you chickadees with curly hair, you MUST let Monique work on your hair. It's so hard to find someone who can cut curly hair because stylists in Hawaii seem to be so used to cutting straight, thick, Asian hair. I can't tell you how many FOBy over-layered fashion mullets I've had the displeasure of rocking becauase other stylist just don't understand curly hair. Monique can look at you and know what will work for your face shape, hair type, etc, BUT she also listens to what you want and will flat out tell you if something is a no-go. I completely trust her with my hair, which is a pretty big deal. You also get tons beauty advice from her while she's doing your hair...can't tell you how many great tips, tricks, and recommendations I've received from her. One thing I've also noticed about her is that she is a perfectionist. She will not rush on my hair and takes the time to double and triple check everything to make sure I leave with perfect hair. This is probably the only time I would urge someone to cheat....seriously, you must cheat on your regular stylist and let Monique work her magic on you - you won't be disappointed. I also love that she is a business woman doing it all by herself. read more

I have to agree with all the reviews of Monique Son. Not only is she a gifted hair stylist, but also worked wonders on my unruly brows. Being new to Hawaii, I put off finding a hair stylist until I was informed that I need to have my photo taken professionally for our company newsletter. I relied upon my fellow Yelpers to guide me in the right direction. You didn't fail me. Monique is everything other Yelpers have said...and more. Her personality is awesome and bubbly without being over the top. I've found my hair stylist and look forward to seeing Monique for my color treatment in the next couple of months. read more

Monique has done it again :) I love my hair, and know from experience it will grow out well too. Also, she just went to the Vidal Sassoon headquarters in London last month for inspiration and new techniques. How many stylists have you heard of, in Hawaii, flying halfway across the world to learn advanced techniques and acquire trendy global styles? Get thee booty into her chair. You will not regret it. read more

Monique cut my hair because my stylist was out of town. I must say that I was more than pleased with the spa setting and the atmosphere. On top of that Monique gave me the exact cut that I desired without using a buzzer.. Hats off to her for hand cutting my Okinawan hair with scissors. I'd recommend her to anyone. read more

Got scammed and warning others to be careful with her! I came to Monique for a relaxer. I'm half African American so I wanted to find someone that was familiar with ethnic hair. There are a lot of good reviews on here about her knowing black hair so I made an appointment. She relaxed my hair and charged me $130. I gave her a $30 tip. So totalled $160. The price was fine with me because I thought she did a good job. She suggested I come in again in a couple months to do my roots. I asked her how much the next visit would cost. She said it's usually $130 but the next one would be on her. Again I confirmed that the next visit would be free and she said yes. Made sense since I would have been a recurring client for touch ups and such. Fast forward to my second appointment when I'm in her salon getting ready to get my hair done and she tries to tell me not only did she not say that this visit was going to be free, but also that for my first visit she accidentally charged me $130 when she was supposed to charge me $165. So for this visit she was going to charge me $165 to make up for the first visit........ First off I feel like her accident of charging me less the first time is on her. And that I shouldn't have to pay the difference the next visit because she feels like it. Secondly when I told her that she said this visit would be free, she tried to say she meant that she would pull the relaxer from my roots through my hair as she rinsed it for free..... 1. That's not what she initially said because I made double sure and 2. Isn't that what they do already and is not considered an extra charge??? Bottom line I went in expecting to only give her a tip and came out paying $165 plus tax. I gave this 2 stars just because I do think she did an okay job with my hair but I will not be returning because she low-key scammed me. read more

I have been going to Monique since 2007. I found her shortly after moving to Hawaii and haven't let anyone touch my hair since. When she moved to Heaven on Earth, I had no qualms about going with her. She and I have done everything possible to my hair- lightened it, darkened it, high lights and low lights. Every time she exceeds my expectations with her skill. She always treats me as a dear friend and is professional in every aspect of her job. My hair is always beautiful and shiny and every time I get a compliment (and I get them a lot!) I tell them to go see Monique. Now that she is at a full service spa, you can pamper yourself with an entire day of beauty! read more

Since seeing Monique at Heaven on Earth Salon and Day Spa, I used to admire and love the hair styles that her clients would walk out with. I decided to give it a try because I usually like dramatic and defined styles. Always being super professional, she'll teach you about simple things like using the wrong products can coat your hair instead of give it a good cleaning to hair styling techniques like hair-wrapping while using a blow-dryer. Everytime I go to her, I'm ALWAYS satified She knows exactly how to style hair while also conforming it to the face by slimming it. I don't think I could get my hair styled by anyone else after seeing her. You won't end up falling in love with just her skills, you'll also fall in love with her personality. I definitely recommend her to all my friends and family because even though she may be a bit pricey to some, she's definitely worth every dollar. I hope you make the choice to book an appointment with her and love the result, too! :D read more

Monique is a talented hair dresser and she is super nice, polite, and personable. I came to her because of all the glorious yelp reviews. And you know what? I was very impressed with the amazing hair cut she gave me. She shared some good tips on how to manage my hair and recommended some good products that compliments my hair style and texture. One thing though, she's quite expensive. I went to her because someone mentioned that her prices were very reasonably but a $85 haircut was a bit above my price range. read more

I have been coming to Monique since moving to HI in 2013. I have biracial curly hair and she works it fabulously. She can cut it straight or curly, based on your preference. Takes her time, gives you 100% of her attention, and gets your hair done right every time. I also go to her for highlights and coloring treatments and they always look amazing. Cannot overstate how good she is with my hair. If you have ethnic hair and are looking for someone that can do quality work, check out Monique. She won't disappoint. read more

I thought I wrote a review about Monique previously, but I realized that I didn't. Shame on me. Hands down, Monique is THE BEST. I hope she never goes away because I don't know what my hair would do without her. Previously, I absolutely HATED getting my hair cut. I have very unruly, frizzy, thick, ridiculous hair and whenever I would get a haircut, I would be so nervous on how it would turn out, which is why I would get my hair trimmed once a year.. if that. I would try to avoid the situation as much as I could. That is until I met Monique. My mom and I have the same type of hair and she found Monique via Yelp and decided that we should both go in together and try her out. As apprehensive as I initially was, I agreed and couldn't be more happier with my decision. We went in and each brought pictures of hair styles that we liked and Monique was able to let us know what would and wouldn't work for us. We trusted her opinions and told her to do whatever she thought would work best for our face shape, hair texture, etc. Throughout the whole process, she not only worked her magic, but also educated us step by step and let us know what she was doing along the way and why she was doing it. In the end, I couldn't be more happier with a haircut and now look forward to every time I see her again. After seeing Monique a few times, I finally convinced my boyfriend that he needed to see her as well. My boyfriend suffers from thinning hair, mostly due to genetics and partially due to what his job entails (wearing a hard hat, stress, etc). He was on his last leg of hope and on the verge of just shaving his head, but before that I told him that he had to see Monique to at least give it one more try. THANK GOD HE AGREED. Again, Monique worked her magic and educated him on what was going on and what he could do to prevent future hair loss and also how to style his hair to make it less noticeable. I cannot thank Monique enough for giving him his confidence back. After his appointment, he told me, "I literally thought there was no hope left for my hair.. but when I looked in the mirror, I couldn't believe what she was able to do." :) :) :) The appointments are not cheap by any means, but neither is her work. She's a GENIUS when it comes to hair and I cannot and will not complain. THANK YOU MONIQUE! SO MUCH LOVE FROM MY FAMILY TO YOU :) read more

Just got my hair did and as always happy with the results. She is the "mane" yoda, as far as I'm concerned. Monique gives you suggestions as to what will look good but never forces you to get a cut/style that you're not comfortable with. She cuts the style that was discussed, so if you said keep the length you won't turn around at the end with a bob.Yes, it costs alot more than going to Super Cuts but her results are far much AWESOMER. She's super chill and above all professional. She be a busy stylist, so I try to make my appointments at least 1-2 months ahead. read more

Happiness in a haircut: that's how I would describe going to Mo's. I wish I could attach "before" and "after" photos with this review. I've been neglecting my hair for the past several months. I went to Mo with a sorry mass of thick frizzy hair and she transformed it to a shiny and silky mane. What's great about Mo is that she puts you at ease and figures out what style makes you look your best and fits your lifestyle. For instance, she gives me precise layers that frame my face but in a style that is easy to maintain since she knows I'm lazy about styling my hair on a daily basis. She gives the best head massage and she's got mad skills when it comes to cutting hair. She's the best stylist I've had. She makes sure that every strand is cut perfectly. I am not kidding. And the result is that I walk of Mo's incredibly happy with my hair. If you've been getting haircut/color that nobody notices, you need to start going to Monique. You'll not just get a haircut; you'll get a makeover plus therapy. read more

This woman is AMAZING. I have very thick, curly hair (I'm half black and half white so you can imagine) and have been getting all kinds of different hair Smoothing Treatments for YEARS. Brazilian Blowouts, Keratin Smoothing Treatments, you name it. It's the only way I can manage my own hair. I don't know what kind of magic Monique has in her fingertips but this was hands down the best Smoothing Treatment I have ever received by anyone!! Not only did my hair turn out to look and feel AMAZING afterwards, but Monique also gave me SO MUCH knowledge about how to properly take care of my hair (things no one has ever told me!) and make it grow!! (Bonus points: she already knows all of the military female hair regulations! Ha!) Not only is she fantastic at what she does but she is truly a kind and loving soul. She was so easy to talk to and I almost fell asleep in her chair at points because I was so comfortable!! Is she a hair stylist or a therapist??? (I think both) For people with ethnic/textured hair, it is very difficult finding someone who knows how to handle it while living on Oahu. But I encourage all of you to come see Monique. She KNOWS what she is doing. I'm not going to anyone else for the remainder of my time on Oahu. But make sure you schedule with her well in advance! She has many people seeking her special skills (which should tell you something in itself!). For those worrying about pricing, I always consider what someone once told me, "Would you let just anyone work on your Mercedes or Rolls-Royce? Or would you pay a professional to work on it?" In my opinion, my hair is worth more than any car LOL. read more

"Mo" as we endearingly call her is by far the best stylist I've ever had! I'm extremely selective about who I see when my hair is concerned and each and every time I've gone to see Mo, the results are truly amazing! I can always count on her to tell me without hesitation, what would be best for my hair type. My color/highlights ALWAYS result in a hip, but sophisticated look that receive many compliments. Mo's new location feels like going to a friend's house to have your hair done. It's quaint and cozy unlike larger salons where you feel like you're just being shuffled from one station to the next. She takes tremendous pride in her work and is a true perfectionist when it comes to hair. I strongly recommend her services and guarantee that you will leave feeling (and looking) great!! read more

She's also an expert on hair color, treatments, and products. She even gives awesome massages after washing your hair! She's the only stylist to give me haircuts that I've been truly happy with. I've been going to Monique for nearly a year now. She's an excellent hairstylist for both gals and guys. When I first started going to Monique, she was working at a high-end salon on Ward. While that place is cool, Monique is the one who kept me coming back. She shared that old hairstyle was "out of style." All I knew was I wanted a haircut that would be sexy for the ladies. Not to be narcissistic or anything, but Monique made that happen! I think I have an awesome haircut and I look forward to my monthly appointment with her. Check her out. Sorry for my late review! But I wanted to see how my hair grew out within after a month I cut it... Normally my mom would step in and dictate my life but I'm a young lady now! I make my own decisions!!! :D and I made a damn good one here! It's still amazing after that fresh cut! My hair length was to my butt and I am 5'5. I guess you can call it hula hair. I'm not very 'girly' but not a tomboy- not high maintenance I should say. Which made Monique's cut and style even more amazing because I could make my hair look like I styled it even though I didn't try to! Her pricing is worth it and honestly not that expensive. She is one on one with you, shampoos and conditions, and styles all in that one price. - I think $85.. So so so reasonable. And even if she raises the price, I would still go to her. I'm so glad to have found a new stylist. read more
