When I moved to Hawaii just about two years ago, the first thing I did, before I even unpacked my bags, was to go looking for a hair salon. I was sporting a super short, pixie cut and knew that I was going to have to find someone in a more trendy neighborhood. Why a trendy neighborhood you ask? Because I want an awesome, hip short hair cut, not a cheap hack job that I could get from a barber shop. Giving a woman a pixie cut or a haircut whose length is more traditionally associated with males is an art, it has to compliment AND complement a woman's softer facial features otherwise you aren't sporting a pixie, you are sporting a dude's cut. And unless that is your thing, and it definitely isn't mine, is no bueno. I ramble, my point was that generally the stylists who have this ability are found in trendy, hip neighborhoods.
I found Winam pretty quickly and after perusing the photos, knew that this was the salon for me. I scheduled an appoint for later that same week. That first meeting was a long one, but I actually really appreciated that Hillary took her time, introduced herself, asked questions to get to know me and my lifestyle, and discussed what cuts would look best and how to achieve them. You see I have wickedly curly hair, but I crave straight hair, short cuts. But I have never. Ever. EVUR. trusted anyone to relax, or as a sistah would say "perm", my hair. Very few people know how to deal with Asian hair, let alone curly, coarse Asian hair. That and I didn't want to end up with a chemical burn. But Hillary's past as an EMT, her beauty school training in Oakland, and her continued education with Vidal Sassoon enabled me to trust her. That first cut and perm? It was free. Hillary wouldn't even take my tip. She told me if I loved it, I could come back. I've been coming back every 4-8 weeks ever since. And I have to say, in the 18 visits I've made to her I have NEVER, EVER heard someone walk away disappointed or hating their haircut.
Her prices are seriously affordable, I guess some people would call that cheap. For a cut and a perm (the perm's lasted at least three months - mind you 3 months, with a PIXIE or otherwise short HAIRCUT) it would cost about $90. Haircuts on their own will run you about $35. Think about that. This woman is the only stylist in a salon listed by Elle Magazine as one of the top 100 salons in the United States, is the ONLY salon in the state of Hawaii on that list, and a haircut with her runs $35. Why? Because she loves hair. She loves doing hair. She loves and excels at her craft and wants to be able to work with as many people as want to work with her. What is amazing is she continues to hone her skill set by attending Vidal Sassoon workshops and brings that back to her shop.
I have done pixies, asymmetrical bobs, partially shaved heads, and currently a disconnected curly mohawk/mullet (we are working on growing out my perm) with HIllary. I have had my hair straightened("permed"), protein treated, and deep conditioned with Hillary. Never once did my hair come out damaged. Never once did I get a chemical burn. I have given her carte blanche to do whatever she likes to my hair, knowing that she knows my proclivities towards short, hipster, hyper trendy hair. Never once have I left her salon less than 200%, an outcome that would require us rewrite the laws of mathematics, but hey, Hillary is THAT good that her work can actually do that. When I had 3/4s of my head shaved, Hillary told me to come in in a couple of weeks so she could touch up the shaved area. For free.
I dread the day I have to move off island and the possibility that I will lose the best stylist I have ever been to in my life. But then again, I just might do what I have heard other people do - plan vacations to Hawaii just so she can cut my hair. read more
