I've been coming here for about two years now and absolutely love this salon. Everyone seems to really love their work and do their best to listen to exactly the hair style you're going for. I've been here for everything from trims to chopping of two feet of hair. Yesterday's visit was especially important because I'll be taking engagement photos soon. I made an appointment during the rush hour so they were a little behind but I got an extra long shampoo and massage do I wasn't complaining. Stoked to take photos with my new haircut. Loved the hairstyle she gave me, for years, I went to several hair stylists in town and country but they could not give me the fantastic look Hillary gave me. A friend recommended her. Need to allow at least a week or more for appt. She is experienced, you can tell by the way she handles her shears and razor and the "tuffing/fluffing" she does after the haircut. I have naturally flat and straight hair and she was able to do some magic on it so I can wash and wear. Love everything about this place and stylist. I went to Hillary with air-dried clean hair for the "green" cut. I loved that Hillary took the time to look at my hair, ask me some questions, and give me some ideas. I told her I wanted to keep it long, but I was bored with the cut. Somehow she read my mind and gave me exactly what I wanted. She cut it in a way that will work with my hair so it won't require much styling, which is great for me! She even showed me a quick way to style it. Also, she offers free bang trims in-between cuts! Winam Hair Studio is by far the best salon on island! Hilary and her amazing staff never disappoint. They always take the extra time to figure out how to achieve the look that you want, while minimizing the damage that can be done when coloring your hair. I always appreciate that, especially since I have had previous stylists bleach the ever loving crap out of my hair in the past. Sometimes it takes years to recover from a bad cut or coloring job! I went to her salon several weeks ago and I definitely go back again. So correction, her salon is located at Kokohead ave, upper floor of the post office. I tried many hair salon before, walked in happy, walked out full of frustration or disappointment. However, it was difference with Hillary. I really like her style. She insisted me to cut the dead-end right when she looked at my hair. I was impressive because not any single hair-stylist ever asked me that at the first glance. She listened to what i want, also looked at the picture I showed her. " Chop, chop , chop" really fast and my hair came out pretty. I even loved going there more when she used the aromatherapy after shampooing my hair, feel sooooo relaxing. So very good experience for the first time. I really like it. read more

Anyone who commutes into town feels me on this one. Plus, free espresso. Personality: I need a good laugh first thing in the morning and I always get that here. Hilary is amazing! I go to her twice a year to get a cut. She does such a good job that my hair grows out beautifully for 6 months (until I get tired of longer hair and need to cut it). I have naturally curly hair and she is the only stylist on island who knows how to cut it so that it enhances my curls. I've tried many other salons, even very expensive salons, and they just don't compare to Winam. Hillary knows what she is doing. She knows what will look good on you based on your hair and your look. And if you have curly hair go to her because she knows how to cut curly hair beautifully. Check her out at least once. If you don't like it, your hair will grow back so no problem. And if you end up loving your cut (like me) you've found a hairstylist for life! I've seen her probably 6 times so far and she always puts attention and detail into each cut. Had super high hopes after reading all the reviews but i went in for a trim and a darker hair color and came out with over half a foot cut off and pretty much black hair. Sad because it was almost the perfect length but I will now be wearing it in a pony tail this summer. Im giving her 2 stars because she is really an awesome person, unfortunately I wont be returning. Updated 5/20/12 I am adding a star because Hillary contacted me and offered a full refund. She is really an excellent business owner and cares about her clients' happiness. I have been there several times. I really liked services I received in the past except the most recent visit, unfortunately. I love edgy short hairstyles and red/orange colors. But, what I got at the end was not what I really wanted. My hair was colored reddish brown before the treatment. I told them I like red, orange, and maybe some pink... but, my hair is only one tone, darker, and pinkish under sun... Hilary didn't spend much time cutting my hair. She usually seems to have a lot of fun ideas... but not this time. Very ordinary hair style... I really wanted my hair to be short! My friend who is a hairstylist told me that my hair on the back is uneven. She took pictures and showed me, and it was uneven. I read reviews here, and I must agree with those who did not give a good rating. I know it takes longer at this salone... so I assumed my appointment would be like 2 hours... but, I prefer like one hour. A few people came after me got their hair cut finished before me... Anyway, I made an appointment with my friend. She will fix my color and hair. It sucks that I am spending $$ for two hairdo... but, I rather be happy everyday seeing myself in a mirror. read more

I was looking for a good place for a new haircut, so I turned to yelp. Read all the good reviews about Hillary, so went for a haircut. She was really nice, but I wasn't satisfied with the cut. Before the cut, my hair was long enough to cover my nipples (sorry but thats how I gage the length). I went in and told her I was mostly satisfied with my hair, but thought it could use a shape-up. I told her I wanted to keep the length, but instead of being straight across in the back, I wanted a v shape cut. Well, it ended up being cut at about 3 inches above my nipples, and no v shape in the back (just straight across). When my friends and coworkers saw me - several of them were saying - "oh you got your hair cut shorter!" Not the response I wanted. read more

Hillary took her time with me to make sure what type of haircut would work on me, and it was definitely worth the time and money spent! How have I not reviewed before? A synopsis of my hair journey: had an amazing stylist back on the East Coast who did great short cuts. I still went to her for my hair cuts the first couple of years I lived in Hawaii... which was obviously not convenient given that she was nearly 5000 miles away. Naturally my hair grew out a lot. Then I found a stylist on the island who did great color and cuts on my longer hair. But after a while I missed having short hair, so I began an intensive Yelp search to find a stylist who could do amazing short cuts and found Hillary. During my first appointment with her she ran her hands through my hair and said that I must be hapa because of the texture of my hair- yes! I knew at that point I was in good hands and she would cut my hair in a way that would work with my weird texture. I walked out completely happy with my pixie cut and I've been going to Hillary ever since. I often show up with just pictures of cuts that have inspired me lately and she's able to distill the photos into something that will work for me with fantastic results. The early hours are actually pretty nice and make it easier to get an appointment- in a pinch I can go super early and still make it to work in time. read more

This is the worst haircut experience I have ever had. Went in with the perfect blank canvas - a straight short bob. All I wanted was to thin out the ends and I even gave her a pic, but the stylist gave me a mop top. (think Beatles). I told her I didn't like it and she ended up giving me an asymmetrical punk pixie cut which is completely inappropriate for the office environment where I work. It was supposed a quick 30 minute appointment but it turned out to be 1.5 hours because of the mistake she made on my haircut. Needless to say, I was late to work and I'm out $60 for a haircut I can't even stand. read more

It has probably been over 6 months since I was at her salon, but I need to write about it. I went to her bcos of the positive reviews. It was an overall bad experience. The chair you sit in to get your hair washed is the wrong height level. Sitting there causes your neck to fall backwards and dangle into the sink... very uncomfortable. She had her minion wash my hair and give me a head massage. She rubbed my head so hard she gave me a headache. The massage went on forever bcos Hillary's family member walked in the door during my shampoo/massage. My services ceased while she cut the hair of her family member. It was evident the family member did not have an appointment and dropped in by the conversation they had. All the while, my head is dangling in this sink. My neck hurt for over a week after this appointment. The salon is located in an undesirable neighborhood. You can get much better services elsewhere. read more

For you particular women out there, Hillary is the lady for you. I have been moving from stylist to stylist. Some on the low end, some on the high end. All of them, I no longer see due to the high price or that they truly didn't understand my hair. I have at least 4 cowlicks, thick & straight hair. I have never really been happy with any of my previous cuts. Now, 2 yrs later I'm still with Winam. Hil's place is modern yet zen. It's always an open conversation with all the ladies there. Where to start...? Hillary is an amazing stylist although to call her a stylist is a bit misleading--artist, visionary, hair goddess, these are all more appropriate terms. Alright. ....I would normally only and rarely do reviews on YELP for food..But Hillary from Winam by far the one of the best hair stylist on the Oahu Island!!! Why?? I'll tell you why....I used to go Blanc Salon and J's salon both places charges an arm n a leg yet there's no personality in the stylist! ! No conversation at all or just being polite n ask ya typical questions, on top of that they would leave some sort of their signature (in my case a tail)....I'm not exaggerating! !! With Winam....I get the hair cut I want and happy when leaving vs. the other 2 places!!! I HIGHLY recommend this place.....very straightforward n if you're NOT happy just tell her cuz she gonna do whatever it takes to make ya happy!! Btw....I get espresso n an biscotti while waiting....how many of you can tell me you get this kind of service without paying over $100??? Exactly! !! Ok so first of all I NEVER do reviews but I was so blown away by my new cut I just can't say enough how awesome Hillary and her crew are! I came in with long dreary, frizzy, drab hair that made this 40 year old look 50, and Hillary gave me the cut of a lifetime. I met Hillary when she was filling in for another hair dresser on leave. She greeted me with such enthusiasm and excitement. I have very thin hair that really needs someone who knows how to cut. I have been going to Winam Studio for over a year. Hillary is a fantastic and creative stylist and colorist. She uses ammonia free color and her highlights turn out very natural. The atmosphere is always welcoming and friendly. Hillary and her assistant Krysti are a great tag team and not only do I get a fab cut color and highlight but also am offered coffee, sweets and even a run to the parking meter if need. Feeling frustrated about my orange hair I came to Hilary and I immediately knew I had found the right place. After looking for a decent salon in Honolulu for a year I have finally found my new go-to hair stylist! I got my hair cut by Hillary on Saturday and am really happy with the cut and the experience! I wanted layers in my short/medium hair, and Hillary was happy to do what I wanted, but when she saw how frizzy my hair got when it dried naturally, she suggested that she do something slightly less dramatic than I'd asked for so as not to exacerbate my frizz. I let her do what she suggested, and I loved the way it came out. She gave me layers like I asked for, and more importantly made my hair less dense and voluminous, but she used her expertise to save me from myself, too. Four days later I'm still really happy with my haircut and think it still looks great when I style it myself! On top of doing a great job cutting my hair, Hillary was a lot of fun to spend 45 minutes with. Highly recommend!! read more

Blown away by Hillary's warm welcome, honesty, and caring when I showed up for a first appointment (made quickly with a slick online appointment system) yesterday morning at 7:30 am (... and she opens at 5ish in the morning!) after a long and tough week. I entered her studio and she immediately welcomed me with a warm and cherry hello. She looked at my long, curly, thick, highlighted hair and admitted I would be better served .... by another salon with a dedicated colorist. Who turns away business when you can fudge through it for a quick buck?! She offered to cut my hair and so I ended up in her chair. So silly now, but I started to tear up --I had been really excited for a long overdue highlight and the thought of it got me through a truly awful week (close relative with terminal illness; work shenanigans) AND I needed it to get me ready for an important off-island international meeting in 3days -- anyways, Hillary got me a box of tissues and was super cool while I eventually got it together. By the end, I was laughing and had the name of several local colorists who might be able to help me (appointment made for today). So, "thanks" seems wholly inadequate. However she made me feel very comfortable and she knew exactly how to handle my hair and did an amazing job cutting it and she even showed me a cool trick with how to curl my hair with a flat iron.
