While we were fortunate enough to find a good spot, our son had to park down the street. Despite being crowded on a Sunday morning, and the place being small, with limited seating, we were shown a very nice corner table by the window. Our server was a very nice woman, athletic-looking, with glasses. She did an excellent job of taking care of us, and was very warm and friendly. My wife had a veggie scramble; I had the breakfast burrito. The burrito was large, with eggs, hash browns, and your choice of meat; I chose sausage. It was smothered in a tasty green chile sauce, along with sour cream. Very delicious, though I might ask for a red sauce next time. So far, Rupert's is our favorite breakfast spot in town.

The restaurant is tiny, a narrow shotgun type unit in a building along main street. We managed to get one of their five tables and were promptly served drinks and time to look over the menu before ordering the Country Benedict. My coffee was kept filled as we waited for our order. As soon as the plate hit the table, I knew that even though the owner had changed, the spirit of the place remained. The plate of food was massive; more than the two of us could eat. The plate included two halves of an excellent biscuit, half of a large sausage patty on each, an over easy egg; all smothered in country sausage gravy. The other half of the plate had a mound of beautiful browned hash browns. Enough for four people or at least two very hungry people. It was glorious and nostalgic. The flavor was everything I wanted it to be. If you are in or near Durango, please consider giving this true old diner a try. It actually reminded me of a cafe I used to frequent in college. They make all their baked goods in house, it's tough to choose! You order at the counter and the line was long on a Saturday morning. They have a handwritten chalkboard menu behind the counter, but if you can't see it in line they have paper menus to grab at the register. The tough decisions arise when you get close to the pastry case. It's filled with delicious quiches, buns, and morning staples. I was intrigued by the quiches and they had a huge selection of them. I landed on the green chile and bacon (I think it was bacon?!) When I went to order I was hit with a question I wasn't prepared for. They asked me if I wanted it on a regular pie crust or a hashbrown crust. FTW?! I had never heard of such a thing. The apple fritter was finally there waiting for me, and the first bite immediately transported me back in time to being a little kid standing at the donut counter in my local Bashas.
