This is a No Frills, Down and Figuratively Dirty, Functional Willoughby's in the Yale School of Architecture. It's also open to the Public. I ordered a black iced coffee and sat for a bit. There were several tables, mostly occupied by people who I assume were students. I did not hear anybody discussing the most current theories on the use of columns, but I'm confident they were thinking it. While this is not one of the nicer looking Willoughby's, the black iced coffee was very good. Smooth going down. Good aftertaste. Willoughby's is indeed about serious coffee. 4 Stars read more

I am not sure I've ever had any food here, but you know what I have had? Coffee that makes me feel like I'm going to pierce the veil between universes. There's coffee and then there's Willoughby's coffee, which will make you shake and talk to the Face of God. Ambiance is fine, it's a small spot so its almost impossible to find a seat because this is basically on Yale's campus, which means you're competing with people who are about to have a nervous breakdown and haven't slept in two weeks, so probably not worth losing an arm. Best coffee in New Haven or come to think of it anywhere (except for maybe the one time I had a Marroncito in a cafe in Venezuela some 38 years ago - maybe). Quiet on a Saturday morning. The first stop on my New Haven Croissant tour. To me they look the ones I can make at home from Trader Joes. But these are much softer and buttery. The only thing that I found odd was the hardness of the chocolate, but that is NOT a bad thing, the chocolate was still soft and what better way to start the morning than with a big bite of soft chocolate surrounded by fluffy carbs! This is a quaint little coffee shop located directly across Yale. The prices as compared to Starbucks or a Dunkin' Donuts are much more reasonable. You walk in and are greeted by a glass case of various baked goods and other snack options. The cashiers and barista are friendly and very prompt in taking your order. There is plenty of room to spread out and there is free WiFi available. Overall, this was a nice change from the standard. If ever in the area, I shall return for a chai latte with almond milk! read more

Popular study spot, but I think that there are much better cafes/coffee shops you can go to. I ordered the chai tea which was very over-priced and tasted meh - it reminds me of the milk leftover after you finish your cereal. The seats are fine, but the only charging stations are by the bar, so if you want to study with a friend at one of the tables, it becomes really inconvenient. I like Willoughby's for a few reasons: 1) they carry vegan baked goods; 2) they have loose-leaf tea (make sure to ask specifically for loose-leaf, because they also have some bagged varieties); 3) they have a central location in New Haven, but manage to still exude a semblance of calmness. The vegan cupcake they normally carry oftentimes sell out early in the week. They're pretty high quality double chocolate cupcakes made by a baker elsewhere in Connecticut. I wish they carried a few more flavors, and maybe cookies as well (yes, I know they have prepackaged ABC vegan cookies, but I'd rather have something fresh and local). They have a respectable loose-leaf tea selection. No complaints here. Lastly, the location is great and a quick walk to the center of the Yale campus and to major attractions such as the British Art Museum, the Yale Gallery and the New Haven Green. read more

Decent coffee. I haven't been back because the staff is just so lackluster. Still waiting to feel the least bit welcomed and appreciated. Not a lot of seating. Just awkward. Only tried twice to make sure I don't their Americano. I don't. Their other location is better. But again no seating. Great location and brewed coffee. The decor is somewhat cold and uninviting - perhaps too modern? Definitely more sterile than cozy. Would normally get 4 stars for the coffee, but the uneven service brings it down to a 3. Some of the baristas are clearly not well trained in how to make the various espresso based drinks - this seems to be a recurring problem. What's worse is that the baristas throw around a 'whatever' attitude which doesn't go over well when customers catch them making mistakes. I'd come here more often if their employees were more serious about coffee like the people at Blue State and The Publick Cup. read more

All the coffee is made fresh and local. The coffee and the chai lattes are really delicious. Haven't tried any of the pastries, but they look great too! Came here to kill time before gpscy opened, and everyone was so nice! They gave me a complimentary drink and let me eat my leftovers in the cafe :D I could see where it might feel cramped ding the rush hour. Came here at 4pm on a Monday and it was surprisingly crowded. The staff was super efficient though and got through a pretty long line without much pain. The amelie croissant was great! I also got the chai latte which was pretty darn good. I find many places don't do right by their chai lattes (I'm looking at you Blue State), but the one here was pretty good. Snagged a seat looking out the window with some decent people watching. Overall, a good experience but also nothing that wowed me, no latte art, no employee-customer interactions beyond the bare necessary, and the croissant in an unceremonious white paper bag. Nice view from the big windows especially on sunny days. Not that spacious, only eight tables. It could also be kind of noisy when they make the coffee, because it is only a small place. And the biggest inconvenience... not so many charging sockets for your computer. read more

Willoughby's makes phenomenal coffee. It's strong, roasted perfectly, and never tastes burnt. I would easily put their coffees in the top 3 of anywhere in New Haven. I've always felt the pastries are dry and leave a little bit to be desired, but others seem to love them, so maybe it's just me. Regardless, they have a great location under the Yale School of Architecture with large windows, a decent amount of seating (and electrical outlets, importantly), and a nice modern touch to the decor. Summary: among the best at what they do in the country, great service. Long story now, I come here every day: Willoughby's is one of the best coffee roasteries in the country, period. Look up say coffee review and note the scores they have, and how many of their coffees have scores of 95. So it's not just me, it's experts speaking. And I really like that the baristas are really nice people, something that isn't always the case at specialty coffee shops. I enjoy my coffee without a side of snob, thank you. I also tend to bring my friends here when they come to New Haven, and small city or not, thanks to Willoughby's we have great coffee. The coffee is amazing, I buy the beans and also brew it at home, though at times I like to eat the ones with more chocolate notes (seriously, I'm thinking of ways to use the beans in my cooking now). I can't speak much for their non-black coffees, lattes and what nots since I don't usually have them, but I do at times enjoy their coffee beans covered in dark chocolate, black coffee, espressos, cappuccino, and the stuff I drink before hitting the gym in a rush, an iced coffee with a shot of espresso. Oh, and the espresso is really good. Let's say some espressos around town taste like there was a side of machine oil left at the bottom. They don't offer much in terms fake flavored coffees because their coffee has flavor already, which will save you money on frappucinos and stuff. read more

This is the brand-new location (opened in Feb. 2009) of good-old Willoughby's. (Btw, they used to have two locations and then for some reason one closed, but now they're back to being sufficiently represented.) Thanks to their origins as a coffee importing and roasting company, you can expect that they really know their coffees. I am a huge coffee lover and really welcome the addition to this part of town. The location is great; the space fits neatly in the recently expanded Yale A&A building; the interior is spacious, modernly furnished and lit well enough for reading. The website advertises free wi-fi at this location but I haven't used it (the university's network gets great reception), so you should ask the staff. Speaking of which, service was a little attitude-y two of the times I have been there but I'd like to attribute it to the fact that it was the evening shift and not to some stereotypical "town-gown" tension. The menu choices are familiar (though not identical -- fewer choices here) from the Church street store. The carrot bread is fabulous-O! Only thing I personally dislike is the spritz of flavored sugar syrup which for an inexplicable reason is part of their iced cappuccino recipe. If you are planning to do work here, be cognizant that there are only outlets at the bar seating near the window. This is a nice little spot for a sweet treat! I've had a flaxseed bar, spinach and cheese croissant, chocolate and peanut butter bar, cheese Danish, and a chocolate croissant here. Oh- and the Mexican spiced hot cocoa is a must-try in the winter, such a delicious beverage! I would definitely keep going back. Best coffee in New Haven, hands down. Their coffee is high quality and you can taste the difference. Come here for a drink or to get coffee grounds to prepare your coffee at home. They also have some great teas, particularly this one green tea with hints of lemon (forget the name - but it has lots of Thai flavors). The tea selection is limited though. This is not the most comfortable place if you're looking for somewhere to wile away the hours. The seating is okay, not great. The space is small so it can get cramped, especially in the afternoons. So get your coffee here, and go elsewhere if you're trying to settle in. read more

I love this place! It's my favorite in New Haven. I like the ambiance--nice tables, with two wall to ceiling windows, nice to have a TV. Good for studying alone or meeting people. Fantastic coffee - I've tried their iced cappuccinos and iced lattes and both are great! Be warned that the iced cappuccinos are sweetened already. I enjoyed it but my friend complained that it was too sweet. My one suggestion is that Willoughby's gets some 1% or 2% milk. read more
