He would only clean a few teeth and left the rest and ask me to come back for a deep cleaning session for those. He also recommended unnecessary procedures which he is not sure about. read more

Don't expect the doctor to have a bubbly personality. One reviewer complained that the doc wasn't friendly. I think he has great bedside manner. He looks at you and listens when you have something to say. He thinks about problems, looks, and doesn't give formulaic answers. He explains and educates. During scary procedures, he gives a play-by-play on his work explaining what he's doing. Top notch in my opinion. And I've been to many dentists. I came to Dr. Trachtenberg when I first moved to Brooklyn in 2000. At that time the office was on Willoughby Street and it had the bare essentials; the walls had paneling from the 70s. Yet I had good work done. He checked out an abscess in my mouth and asked, "Have you ever been hit in the face?" I'd been to another dentist with that abscess who didn't ask that. Memory bank recalled "Yes!" I was hit in the jaw with a field hockey stick about ten years earlier. The tooth was basically dead and bone was decomposing in my jaw. He ordered a root canal to stop the bone loss. Then I went on Medicaid. At that time, the office didn't accept it; now it does. Since I couldn't pay for my cleanings, I tried other dentists. Went to a guy near Atlantic Terminal who taught me to brush each tooth rather than teeth, which for me, a conceptual thinker, was great; but I didn't like the location and that office was uncomfortable. Went to the NYU school. Too many trips for one problem. Tried Hanson Place; never again. Now I have good insurance and returned from California where I didn't trust the dentist I went to; wanted me to get a crown on a tooth that had a crack. I went back to Dr. Trachtenberg remembering his astuteness. He dug out the old filling in that tooth, found decay had gone deep and refilled. No crown needed. I had started getting headaches a few months ago. I know I have periodontitis and thought that was the cause, but it might be that decay. We will see. The new office on Lawrence Street is clean with new cabinets and updated wallpaper. It has the equipment from the old office, the essentials. The two ladies at the front were funny and helpful. They seemed to enjoy working together. Check in was easy. One called my insurance company since it doesn't provide cards, and she explained my dental benefits clearly. What I like about Dr. Trachtenberg is that he is no nonsense and is a good listener. I told him about what I read asking if there was new dentin under that filling that needed replacing. He was pleased to hear I had researched and then chose a filling that supports new dentin growth. He made sure my mouth was numb enough before drilling to make sure it didn't hurt. Under the old filling he found decay in a way that might be the cause of my headaches. He also had an X-ray done to expose the roots, which were fine. I called Saturday afternoon to the message service about an emergency appointment. Finally got a call back Monday morning (answer machine stated they're open Sunday 10am-1pm) telling me they could not see me because they're booked and due to COVID they can only let in a certain amount of people. Even though I was calling about an emergency ( praying my tooth is not infected ) they didn't even try for another date. I understand there are protocols in place but they should also include emergencies. Especially, if that's what they advertise. read more

I went to Dr. Trachtenberg for about a year and a half. I got several fillings done and a root canal over several appointments. I don't have dental insurance so all I paid for all procedures. In January, I went because I was having pain near a front bottom tooth were I previously had a root canal and have a crown. Dr. Trachtenberg told me that it was most likely caused by nearby teeth needing fillings as well as a tooth which was borderline root canal but after working on it said only needed a filling. I made an appointment for the following week. He told me to let him know if the pain returned. When I went back the following week I told him that I was still in pain and felt that I need the root canal. He said that it was too soon to tell and keep taking Advil for the pain. He also put in more fillings on near the tooth with the pain. After completing these fillings he said the teeth he just filled would need crowns. After about 1 month the pain returned much worse than before. I went in for an emergency appointment. He took Bite Wing x-rays, after viewing them he 1st said he say nothing to cause the pain, Then he said that the tooth with the crown had fractured and would have to be removed. He said that he could not perform the procedure and asked for my oral surgeon's information so he could email him the x-rays. He also told me he also told me about the aspects of the dental implant procedures that his office would be able to perform. I called his office an hour later with my oral surgeon's information. He called back to say that in the haste of the appointment he forgot to prescribe pain medication. I gave him my pharmacy's information so he could call in the prescription. I asked him if he emailed the x-rays to my oral surgeon. He stated the he did not receive his information. I told him I left it with his secretary and to please send them because I would be visiting the oral surgeon the following day. He did not send the x-rays and he did not call in the prescriptions to the pharmacy. Also the oral surgeon's office said I should have been fitted for a flipper, a temporary tooth, by my dentist 1st especially since it is a front tooth and dental implants are expensive. they know I don't have dental insurance. I called Dr. Trachtenberg about the flipper, Luckily for me, he was not in the office. I found another dentist went in the same day. Lo and Behold the pain was caused by the tooth which was borderline root canal. It needed a root canal as I thought when I went to Dr. Trachtenberg for the 2nd appointment. My new dentist also viewed the fillings which Dr. Trachtenberg did to my front bottom teeth and finished them as huge layer was left on the bottom of my teeth. When I told him that Dr. Trachtenberg said these teeth would need crowns he said their is no reason for it. To wrap this up, I do not trust Dr. Trachtenberg's medical advice. read more

I came here on a groupon deal. The cleaning was done by Dr. Trachtenberg himself. It was very very brief cleaning and did not include most routine cleaning procedures done by a normal dentist, such as flossing. My teeth did not feel clean like they usually do when I leave the dentist's office. Two months later I returned to my normal dentist, where the hygienist chastised me for not having a cleaning in over a year. I told him I had had one done just two months ago, and he said he couldn't tell. It took him over a half hour to get all the built up plaque off my teeth. Dr. Trachtenberg also identified 2 superficial cavities and quoted me $240 and $260 to fix them. I had a very bad feeling based on the filthiness of the office which doubles as a storage space from the 1970s and the shabbiness of the cleaning job. Good thing, because my real dentist COULD NOT FIND the second cavity, even after repeating the visual exam 3 times and confirming with x-rays. For the one that did exist, he charged me $100 to fix it (at a beautiful, modern, Manhattan office). read more

I went in for extreme pain in one of my back teeth earlier today and was seen 5 minutes after I gave my information to the receptionists. That rarely happens for dental appointments. I've sat in lobbies for up to two hours in the past, so I was pleasantly surprised by that. A few X-rays were taken and Dr. Trachtenberg told me straight up that the root canal I had done a year ago wasn't doing shit. My tooth had to be taken out and he recommended that I do it today. A few tears later, we started the procedure and he was so amazing, kind, patient, let me cry a little bit before he stuck a needle in the roof of my mouth and was overall one of the best dentists I've ever been to. It was honestly such a positive experience and I'll be going back for post-op and other dental work. Maybe the bad reviews got to Dr. Trachtenberg because he's a complete 180 from what the other reviewers have said on here. For anyone who is scared of the dentist, he'll change your mind!! read more

I've been going to Dr. Trachtenberg for the last 3 1/2 years--he's truly a professional. The receptionist are friendly and his assistant. The place is very sanitary, private and calm atmosphere, which is what you want when he's drilling into your teeth. Plus, I haven't had dental insurance until now, and he's been very generous by giving me a discount on the services I've received. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Trachtenberg. read more

I have been having a lot of dental work done lately, after 10 years of ignoring it, and chose this office from 1-800 Dentist. It all started with an infected Wisdom Tooth, and the realization that I really really needed to get those things out. First, I was terrified of having a tooth pulled. Like tears and anxiety scared! Also, I was a little embarrassed for not having been for so long, and I was afraid of what else might be wrong. All these fears are long gone now. Dr. Trachtenberg is awesome! No judgment, no pain during each tooth pulling, and just very relaxed and soothing experience all around. I have a million business cards that I am constantly giving to people because seriously Dr. T. changed my opinion of dentist stuff being scary and painful. Also pretty affordable as I don't have insurance so am paying out of pocket! Also, after my last tooth came out (it was pretty hard to get out, a bit tougher than the first two) the office called me twice that night and the next day just to check up on me. I called this location because my son had bad tooth pain and his regular dentist wasnt open (mind you im at work). The receptionist sounded flustered and said the dentist had no openings for today but we can come in and wait to see the dentist (i had not problem with this). I said ok thank you. Silence on the other end so most people would think the conversation is over. INSTEAD when a relative brought my son there, the receptionist says they dont take his insurance and the card would have to be called to change the dentist. The receptionist says I hung up on her before she could finish telling me about the insurance. If the line is silent, was I suppose to think the conversation was still going? I wouldnt try this location again regardless of its convenient location. read more

Went here because of a Groupon deal for an exam/cleaning/xray. My former dentist retired (I MISS HIM!) so I needed a new one, and this place was really close to my house. The "cleaning" was nowhere near as thorough as what I am used to, but I figured maybe he was trying to cut corners since this was on a "deal." They also called me to move my appointment up by 30 minutes but when I showed up it took 45 minutes to finally get to see the doctor. He was working on two patients at a time and while my old doc did that it was a lot quicker still, and besides, the rooms were spaced apart. This place is so small! The rooms are so tiny you can't walk out of the door if you stand in front of it while opening. There is never an assistant there with the dentist since she CAN'T FIT. The doctor himself is nice enough but the office is a complete dump. I don't need aesthetics when I go to see a dentist. But this place seems to be falling apart. The water faucet on the chair doesn't work, the sink needs manual "flushing", there is a ton of random junk laying around everywhere, there is still blue tape peeling off from an old paint job, which by now should be re-done. Everything needs to be updated. I needed a couple of fillings so I returned for those. The two fillings took 1 hour and 40 minutes to do, since he was jumping between me and another patient the entire time. At one point, he had me put my finger in my mouth to hold down the cotton - isn't that a little unsanitary? Thankfully I was only coming from home, but had I just gotten off a train and he asked me to do that, I would have been really grossed out. Still, I would be okay with a lot of this, after all it's not major discomfort to be in a crappy office and well, the waiting time for me at least is okay since it takes me two minutes to get here. But the guy charged me $480 for what my old dentist (in a really nice office with really attentive personal QUICK service) would have done for no more than $300. I got a couple of more fillings to do, but I think I am taking them elsewhere. read more

I came here in January to get a loose crown fixed. Seeing how I don't have dental insurance, I just searched for a nearby dental office. I found this one, to my regret. The entire procedure cost $150, which I'm not sure if it's bad or not, but the experience was the worst I've ever experienced. The dentist wasn't friendly at all, and all I had for protection was a bib so the water kept splashing into my eyes and face. After the procedure was done I went to the bathroom to check my tooth, the dentist didn't even smooth out the bottom of my tooth so it looked and felt rough so I had to go back in for him to buffer the tooth. Imagine had I not checked my tooth and just trusted him. Now I'm not sure about the price, maybe you get what you pay for, but come on. read more

I went to Dr. Tratchenberg for dental plaque and tartar removal in order to save a molar in pain. He convinced me that he'd clean my teeth for the discounted price of $175 in order to determine whether or not the tooth could be saved. He didn't specify that he'd only be cleaning ONE tooth. I was under the impression that I was going to get all teeth cleaned for the $175. I ended up with a shortened molar, a hole in it; exposed nerves, a temporary filling that feels like it's coming out, and a referral to another oral surgeon for a root canal that'll cost me $450. After three negative experiences with previous dentists, you can imagine how nervous I was to try out another. I had begun my orthodontic treatment plan and I needed to get some teeth pulled, cleaning, the works. I called 1-800 Dentist and was referred to this office. The staff was polite and so was the dentist who tried to keep me calm as he took an assessment of my teeth. I have to give Dr. T kudos for enduring me as a patient for the past few years. I've shed some tears in that chair while undergoing different procedures. I have such a low tolerance for pain, but he tries to make me as comfortable as possible every time. I just wish I didn't have so much to cough up in co-pays for each procedure. He has never lost patience with me, not once, and I respect him a great deal for that. read more

The most unprofessional dental service I've yet to experience​. Made 3 appointments in the last months. Received numerous robo text reminding me of the appointment and also a courtesy call the day prior to one appointment. However, when I showed up for the appointment there was no one there. The first time this happened on May 5, 2019. When I arrived at the scheduled​ time for my appointment and rang the doorbell constantly. No one showed. ​After knocking​​ hard on the door, the dentist showed up to say that he was sick and not taking appointments. An associate called the next day to make an appointment for the following Sunday, May 12, 2019 - Mother's Day. The day before the appointment she called to tell me the appointment was canceled and made an appointment for Tuesday, May 14. 2 hours before the appointment, the robo-text contacts me to remind me. However, when I showed up - Grounds Hog Day all over again. I'm wringing the doorbell - no answer. I'm knocking on the door - no answer. I'm calling there phone number - voice mail. When I called this morning, the secretary said she tried calling me and could not get in touch with me. Again, robo-text hour before, calls prior, yet she claims she did not have a number for me. Very unprofessional. Unclean environment, doorway smells of stale cigarettes. If I could rate them -5 (minus) I would. read more

Called because I had a tooth that had broken and I knew I would either need a root canal or an extraction. I am super nervous about dental pain and needles, but I was in such pain I knew I couldn't avoid it any longer. My sister found this dentist for me and I went as soon as I could. I got there about 6:10pm and was seen in about 10 minutes or so. I explained to Dr Trachtenberg my situation and let him know that I was very nervous. he listened intently and gave me his thoughts on what my options were based on xrays and a visual examination. I told him I was nervous about pain and he numbed me up slowly which I really appreciated and I didn't feel a thing. He explained every part of the procedure and spoke calmly which allowed me to relax even more. I am very thankful I found this dentist. Thanks to his help I can go back to work tomorrow without any pain. I would definitely recommend Dr. Trachtenberg and plan on him my permanent dentist. read more
