The dentist spoke to me personally and explained that they would see us as scheduled and treated my son's toothache, gave him a thorough exam, x-rays, and a cleaning with the hygienist (who did a spectacular job), all totally free as a courtesy because of the insurance mix-up. They do not take our insurance, but I really like the practice and would pay out of pocket to have my children treated here.

My kiddo fell and chipped one of his front teeth. It is a small chip, but it did expose a tiny bit of nerve. The dentist at BiteSize examined him (he cried throughout the entire exam) and told us he would lose the tooth, full stop. She told us she could pull it that day, or in a few weeks, but that there was no hope for the tooth. We decided to wait a bit before having it pulled. We were devastated (our baby!!). After leaving the office, I felt unsettled and decided it was worth getting a second opinion. The dentist at the second practice (also in Park Slope) went above and beyond to care for my toddler and for us as parents. When I first contacted her, she was on vacation, but she responded to my voicemail within an hour and asked me to text her photos of the tooth so she could gauge how serious it was from afar. After looking at the photos, she told us there was hope, and to hold off on any intervention until she could examine him. She also connected us to an emergency pediatric dentist in town, in case our kid stopped eating during the week she was away. He continued eating like normal and didn't exhibit pain that was out-of-the-ordinary directly after a fall. We saw our new dentist the day she was back from vacation. She examined the tooth and had our kid GIGGLING in the dentist chair! He didn't shed a single tear. She talked with him directly and let him use her dentist tools to give me an "exam". She was so patient and made him feel comfortable and at ease through the entire visit. At the end, she told us to wait it out, and that kids have an incredible ability to heal themselves. And here we are...5 months and one follow-up visit later....with a smile full of teeth! He didn't need to get it pulled in the end. We can no longer see the nerve, and his tooth didn't even discolor as the dentist at BiteSize explained it would. I would seriously caution against BiteSize if you are searching for a low-intervention approach to dentistry. If we had stuck with them, he would have had yet another traumatic visit to the dentist and would have lost his front tooth for years. Always trust your gut and get a second opinion.

We got to finally meet Dr MacDermott at their second appointment and he was very warm and friendly. I like that they are able to take emergencies same-day; my son knocked out an already loose baby tooth back in May and we were told to come in to make sure the whole tooth came out. They also are able to deal with kids with disabilities/disorders with gentleness and kindness (my oldest has ASD) The entire staff is knowledgeable and non judgemental. The only downside is the waiting area is rather small. Gets pretty cramped if they have several patients and parents waiting. The kids never mind though, what with the toys, books and chalkboard to keep them occupied. This place is a gem. I wish it was around when I was a child. P.S. So I asked them if they can book the appointment for my son to fill his cavities along with nitrous oxide because they had done it before. The receptionist was reluctant but she still booked it anyway. The day of appointment the female dentist approached my mother and snootily asked for us to book the appointment in the morning for next time. Like okayy, can we try to fill my son's cavities first. Then my mom spoke to my son and he agreed to listen to music and close his eyes while the needle came out and everything went smooth, no thanks to the dentist or staff. My complaint is that this is a PEDIATRIC dental office. Of course the kids may have anxieties when a needle come out. Instead they make snooty remarks and make it seem like my son is a difficult patient which is uncalled for. I've never experienced this with the dentist of the past that was here when we started coming about 10 years ago. It may be time to switch definitely since we're being treated like this

All I know is that BHPD has been an excellent spot for us to care for our kids' teeth thus far. We've had three different types of experiences to date: 1. Regular checkups/cleanings. These have gone very smoothly. The folks at the front desk are cool. The dentists/hygienists are gentle, good with my girls, and most importantly, efficient. They understand that they've got to get in and get out, because there's only so long a kid can stand it. We do both of my kids back to back, and I think we were in and out this last time in less than 45 minutes. Plus, they give us a goodie bag, which is by far my kids' favorite part. 2. Tongue Ties. My younger daughter was born with tongue ties on the bottom and the top, which made breastfeeding a problem. Our pediatrician recommended we have a dentist essentially cut through them with a laser. This was a terrible experience because your poor baby has no idea what's happening, and has a pretty gnarly wound in her mouth for a while...but I think they handled it as well as it can be. 3. Tooth problems. One of my daughter's teeth turned grayish. Not something I've ever seen before, and I called the office, and then e-mailed pictures to the address they gave me. Within 24 hours, they wrote back with a detailed response about what it could be, why it may have happened, and what we should do about it. I appreciated the thorough and quick response, and it makes me pretty confident in their service. All in all, we're pleased with this place, and plan to keep using them as our dentist.

I almost never have a long wait time, I'm usually in and out. Checking in all I do is give them my kids name and that's it. The Orthodontist himself doesn't seem to be very knowledgeable. My son's teeth are far and spaced apart with big gaps so I asked him about braces and he told me braces aren't usually considered until around age 10, I told him my son is 10 and then he changed the age to 11-12 years old. He also looked at my baby girls teeth and told me she has healthy teeth and that he can tell she doesn't drink from a bottle or take a pacifier,but she does. She has a very noticeable overbite too. I'm not sure if I'll stay with this practice only because I don't trust that the orthodontist knows exactly what he's doing and I want to good dental hygiene for my children. We have been treated very nicely here though during the last 3 visits and they're always attentive to the children and not traumatizing them by holding them down, they let the parents do that part, haha! They're located in the basement level so there is Zero cell service there. They have TV screens above the children's head and put on their favorite shows while they get dental work or cleaning done. They also give you a coin at the end of the visit so the child can use that coin and get a prize out of the coin machine.
