More than 10 years ago I went to Dr. Winternitz for pain in my left shoulder. The pain was so bad I was dropping weights at the gym. Fortunately, an MRI didn't show any injury to the rotator cuff and he gave me an injection. I remember getting complete relief and haven't had a problem until about 6 months ago. But this time, it was the right shoulder. It had been so long since he treated me, I had to look at the MRI to see if it was the same shoulder or not because I had forgotten. I called his office and they were able to get me in within a week. Also, they emailed me all the new patient forms and I was able to complete all of it at home and send back to them, so when I came for my appointment, the paperwork was all done. They even have a "patient portal" you can log into and track your appointment, treatment and more. They are located in a small medical center with plenty of free parking. The office itself is quite comfortable and appealing. I was taken care of by the Medical Assistant as soon as I checked in and might have waited 10 minutes before I was escorted back to an examination room. The walls of Dr. Winternitz's office are covered with college and professional athletes he has treated over the years. Just based upon all the photos of the athletes on his walls you would think he would be a team doctor for some major sports team, but it's nice to know someone with his expertise and professionalism is accessible to anyone. After a brief history, Dr. Winternitz examined my shoulder and did a thorough physical exam. He ordered some x-rays which I was able to do at his office and fortunately he didn't find anything abnormal. He recommended another injection which he did right there in the examination room on the same appointment. Within a minute or two of receiving the injection, my pain was gone. Dr. Winternitz treated my left shoulder more than a decade ago and I've never had a single bit of pain since which is why I went back when my right shoulder began hurting. As I write this, I am so happy to be pain free after six months of pain. I know quite a few sports doctors in San Diego, but with the success I had during my previous encounter with Dr. Winternitz, I see no reason to go elsewhere. Naturally, I hope to never need to see a sports medicine doctor again, but if I do, without question I'll come to Dr. Winternitz. Everything from making the appointment, his beautiful office, his amazing staff and Dr. Winternitz himself, I can't recommend his highly enough if you have a sports injury. read more

I was referred to this orthopedic doctor for major shoulder pain. This office is clean. The receptionist was nice enough I guess, it could have been a friendlier atmosphere. This place is freaking freezing! Bring a jacket with you. They are very punctual with their appointments. The doctor is nice but a bit aggressive with making you move when it hurts. There was a barrage of thank you pictures from athletes autographs posted on their walls. I would recommend this doctor to help with a plan to get you back on track. I was referred back to my original doctor after an MRI and a double shoulder steroid shot. It was not a pleasant visit but face it .... Needles hurt!!! read more

I went to Dr Winternitz after a visit to the emergency room. I stepped out of the shower and unfortunately slipped dislocated my arm and fractured and broke pieces off my elbow. What a nightmare! If I could give Dr. Winternitz 6 stars, I'd still want to give more!! I broke my finger pretty badly March 26th and had been seen more than 3 Doctors! Each sending me from place to place, not answering or returning phone calls, and even losing files in the span of 2 weeks! Not one Doctor, or even members of their team seemed to care at all about my situation. It was very disheartening. After assuming my finger was never going to be fixed, a friend referred me to Dr. Winternitz. I was apprehensive at first because of my health insurance (Medi-Cal), but he decided he would have a look. EVERYONE who worked with me was extremely kind, caring and compassionate (finally members of a healthcare team who know what it's all about)!! Excellent staff!! Dr. Winternitz has the best bedside manner! He did more for me in the first 5 minutes than anyone had in over 2 1/2 weeks post injury. It took him all of less than 10 minutes, lidocaine and a pencil -- yes a pencil -- to put my finger back in place! So much for needing that surgery every Doctor was so gun-ho on having me receive! I went to see Dr. Winternitz for shoulder issues resulting from multiple dislocations while surfing. I have thought for years that I had damaged it to where it could dislocate at any time. I reduced my activities and lived with it for years. After discussing options we decided to do surgery and began the tests. Through those results and a follow-up exam, the doctor believed that my problem was not as bad as we thought. We revised the surgery plan and went ahead. Excellent care at Pomerado Hospital in Poway and a very successful surgery by Dr. Winternitz! I did not need a reconstruction as we originally thought just a cleaning of debris form the shoulder socket. I was home the same day and had very minor pain, almost none. I was doing routine things around the house in no time and back riding motorcycles in less than two weeks. For my follow-up appointment I confused the days and showed up on the doctor's day off. He happened to be in the office and saw me anyway! Took the time to go through my after care and clear me to do all activities (within reason). Summary: Excellent diagnosis, surgery and after care. Dr. Winternitz and I worked on a treatment plan for my trigger finger. Two treatments were completed with cortisone. The injections are known to be uncomfortable but Dr Winternitz technique was so good that little discomfort was experienced. Ultimately surgery was the remaining solution as the injections were only temporary. The surgical experience was flawless. The surgery was completed in a very short time and I was released inside of an hour. There was no pain at anytime after the surgery and my hand was usable right away. I took it relatively easy but didn't miss a day of work (I'm an engineer). I could use the keyboard and trackball flawlessly. Within a few days I was back to grinding and welding by antique tractor after work, again with no pain. Recovery was excellent! His office is filled with testimonials by many athletes and complex injuries he resolved. He treated my trigger finger as if I was a member of that elite group. The cost was very reasonable (my insurance is very, very poor) and I appreciate the exceptional expertise and compassionate care by all those involved. I accidentally slammed my foot into the corner of a wall this morning and I was certain I broke my toe(s). While I sat on the sofa with my ice pack wishing I could turn back time, I opened yelp to find an orthopedic doc nearby. I called Dr. Winternitz's office and they said he was booked for the day but asked if I could come in right away. I couldn't walk after my injury but within an hour i had been seen by the medical assistant, had an x-ray to confirm it was broken, the doctor reset my toe, had a second x-Ray to confirm the bone was back in place and Dr. Winternitz answered all my questions. Then I WALKED out of the office! It was not a fun day but it would have been a whole lot worse if I didn't find Dr. Winternitz. Thank you Doctor and thank you Yelp!! read more

I went to see him and brought my x-rays and records. He took additional x-rays of his own and took the time to explain and show me exactly what my problem was. I feel good about the individualized treatment plan he laid out for me. He appears to be very experienced and knowledgable, and does not try to charge Medicare for things which are not necessary. For instance I thought I would need surgery but he said it would not help and explained why. He treats injured employees at Hyatt in La Jolla with excellent results and that's where I heard about him. read more

My husband has a elbow injury due to work this doctor shot him up twice with cortozone with no affect and refused to give him a MRI. We had to pay independantly for the MRI to find out that he had a torn tendon. Injections don't work for torn tendons. A second opinion said the treatment given was a waste of time and the doctor completely mis-diagnosed the problem. Thank God we have a new doctor that will take proper care of him. I would give this doctor no stars but it won't let me. The worst part was all he could talk about was his own tennis elbow. Idiot. read more

I like to ask why, 2.5 months after my ALC & am Meniscus repair why when I reported to physical therapist the continued pain, grinding and popping, PT noted this concern of mine. However, when my wife and I discussed the continued grinding, popping and pain with Dr. William Winternitz he told us "it's just Tendonitis and will go away". I also found out he did not note these concerns of mine in my chart at the time nor did he order a post-op MRI in order to address my concerns, if he had he would have seen that the Meniscus that he earlier reported as corrected with no issues was in fact not corrected with no issues. It was, an still is still torn, and the PS Synovitis from the original trauma of my injury was still there, which was also earlier reported as corrected. I believe that these are all valid concerns and questions that need to be answered. I will be pursuing such answers as I am now going back for another surgery to correct what was ignored by Dr. William Winternitz. read more

Dr. Winternitz is simply the best Ortho doctor that you will ever find. He listens to his patients, is very positive and will go after your ortho issue aggressively. Plus he does excellent work as I can testify as he just performed a knee replacement surgery for me. That was only 3 weeks ago and I am up and walking without assistance including up and down stairs, etc. It is so wonderful to walk rapidly again without pain. I met Dr. Winternitz after abruptly suffering from a knee injury that left me in great pain, unable to stand or walk. His office was able to get me in to be seen quickly. Dr. Winternitz was thorough, kind and went into great detail about the procedure and possible treatments. They scheduled my surgery quickly (per my request as I was unable to stand/walk and hurting). So not only do we know Dr Winternitz because of his great care of my husband but today I had to see an Orthopedic Doctor and I immediately called Dr Winternitz. I accidentally called his cell Nr and immediately hung up, as I realized it was a mobil nr I had dialed. He called me back within a couple of minutes and he chatted with me about my broken knuckle and said I should tell his Secretary to get me in asap. Dr. Winternitz gave me my life back. I was diagnosed with bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome in 2013. In 2017, the Department of Labor approved my case and told me to find a dr that accept payment from Worker's Comp. I can't say enough great things about Dr. Winternitz and his staff. I didn't want to have surgery, but a torn meniscus was keeping me from enjoying the things I like to do and chasing my daughter around. Physical therapy didn't help prior to surgery and Dr. Winternitz gave me the facts and the confidence that surgery was best. He recently performed an Arthroscopic knee surgery on me to repair a minicus tear and I was on my feet the next day with little to no pain.
