Fortunately, an MRI didn't show any injury to the rotator cuff and he gave me an injection. I remember getting complete relief and haven't had a problem until about 6 months ago. But this time, it was the right shoulder. It had been so long since he treated me, I had to look at the MRI to see if it was the same shoulder or not because I had forgotten. I called his office and they were able to get me in within a week. Also, they emailed me all the new patient forms and I was able to complete all of it at home and send back to them, so when I came for my appointment, the paperwork was all done. They even have a "patient portal" you can log into and track your appointment, treatment and more. They are located in a small medical center with plenty of free parking. The office itself is quite comfortable and appealing. I was taken care of by the Medical Assistant as soon as I checked in and might have waited 10 minutes before I was escorted back to an examination room. The walls of Dr. Winternitz's office are covered with college and professional athletes he has treated over the years. Just based upon all the photos of the athletes on his walls you would think he would be a team doctor for some major sports team, but it's nice to know someone with his expertise and professionalism is accessible to anyone. After a brief history, Dr. Winternitz examined my shoulder and did a thorough physical exam. He ordered some x-rays which I was able to do at his office and fortunately he didn't find anything abnormal. He recommended another injection which he did right there in the examination room on the same appointment. Within a minute or two of receiving the injection, my pain was gone. Dr. Winternitz treated my left shoulder more than a decade ago and I've never had a single bit of pain since which is why I went back when my right shoulder began hurting. As I write this, I am so happy to be pain free after six months of pain. I know quite a few sports doctors in San Diego, but with the success I had during my previous encounter with Dr. Winternitz, I see no reason to go elsewhere. Naturally, I hope to never need to see a sports medicine doctor again, but if I do, without question I'll come to Dr. Winternitz. Everything from making the appointment, his beautiful office, his amazing staff and Dr. Winternitz himself, I can't recommend his highly enough if you have a sports injury.

That alone felt excessive for the amount of time and care provided. What was even more frustrating is their policy that if you have pain in your arm, you are only allowed to discuss one joint per appointment. If you have issues with your shoulder, elbow, or wrist, they expect you to schedule separate visits for each. That is completely unreasonable and feels more like a way to generate more billing rather than actually help patients. The visit felt rushed and nothing meaningful was done to address my issue. Unfortunately, this experience gave the impression that the office is more focused on maximizing charges than on treating patients. I definitely would not recommend this office.

There are a good handful of Retina specialists in the San Diego area. Gariano is not one of them and had I done my due diligence, I would still be driving today. And no, I'm not super old. Lastly. this portion relates more to Scripps itself. 99,9% of their clinicians are fantastic. I felt well cared for. Unfortunately, Scripps was made aware of the situation and chose to do absolutely nothing other than protect their Doctor. Not surprising. what was surprising however, was any contact with Gariano or his staff stopped completely, once I alerted Scripps administration of the devastating situation. No more follow-ups. And last minute cancellations and no one is covering them. The ADA parking is out of code with the federal and state mandates. So if that is something you need, plan for extra time to find a reasonable parking spot, bring a driver or use a ride share. Parking is atrocious for anyone needing ADA parking. This used to be the premiere health care, or at least second. And they are consistently slipping from that. The level of customer service at the front desk, the amount of time the doctors actually spend with you, makes me wonder if they have switched to a for profit healthcare system. Not horrible. Better than healthcare say in Alabama. But. There is a lot of room for improvement.
