I was surprised by the high ratings this restaurant has received. It was lacking in every regard, from the fairly drab interior to the Jamaican music playing? As for the food- it ranged from bland to bad. The mashed potatoes were very runny but had flavor, unlike the baked beans which were as runny, but completely bland in taste. Much like the green beans, bland. The cornbread was dry. The pulled pork was average at best and the "jerk" chicken was simply chicken with some sauce squirted on top. My wife had the turkey, which I tried. Maybe my memory is failing me, but I believe a Swansons microwave turkey meal (which I haven't had in years) taste better. Excellent BBQ in NOVA. It almost feels like an authentic bbq pit found in Missouri, Tennessee, or NC. When you walk in, you're immediately hit with that smokey char smell in the air. When you actually stand in line, you're frantically looking over all the chalkboards to find the best bang-for-your-buck. I picked the burnt-ends platter, which comes with a big chunk of cornbread and 2 sides - which was dirty rice and baked beans. My goodness, they really give you a lot of food for only $12 a plate. It's definitely enough to split a single platter with someone. The sauces are good too, and they're the Carolina vinegar based style I think. The spicy sauce was actually spicy, so be careful not to overdo it. They also have handmade pies. I got a piece of keylime pie, which may have been handmade, but I don't think it was freshly made. I watched my piece get plated, which came out of the fridge individually wrapped, and slapped on the plate without any finesse. It was supposed to come with whipped cream too, but my piece didn't. Whipped cream or not, it was just average, so save room for dessert somewhere else. I'm definitely coming back, especially after doing some research and learning that there's a pick-two meats combo. After being away for 3 years (having left the area for work) I was looking forward to what I remember as juicy, flavorful, and oh so tasty brisket I had many times at Willard's. And portions were huge! So huge in fact, it would take 2 days to finish off one of their yummy platters. But what I got today (back in area to visit family) was dry, flaky, and dense brisket. Couldn't squeeze out a drop of moisture had I twisted it as if it was a wet rag. And the portions seemed much smaller than what I remember. Maybe it was the time of day of my visit (630pm) but Willard's closes at 9 pm and whatever the case may be, the food was far from what I remember when I had them last in 2018. Not half bad 'as expected' BBQ pit style place complete with super busy and overwhelming menu. Always packed at lunch time as a good sign that they're consistent and tastey. I've b not been disappointed yet with things like their pulled pork or burnt ends. Writing this review makes me want some even. I never need to get a full platter as the sheer size is overwhelming. So pick you battle and or be ready to sit and digest a while. Great place to bring friends and pick a gamut of the sides to see what all they have in one go. Willard's is pretty good! This was our second time here and both times we've enjoyed it. The prices are completely justified based on the large portions you're given, and the menu options. We had the pulled pork, beef tip ends, Mac n cheese, green beans, and baked beans. The meats were very flavorful and well seasoned. Me and a coworker took some customers to lunch here at their recommendation (they are from the area, we were out of towers). Al 4 of us really enjoyed the food. I'm pretty sure we all ordered pulled pork sandwich with 2 sides. These were generous portions, I had the rice and beans, and coleslaw. The Mac & cheese looked really good. Willard's BBQ - I am a fan! My office is notorious for getting Willard's catered so I was very excited to check out their brick and mortar. I stopped by during lunch and ordered their Texas Sliced Beef Brisket Sandwich with a side of Mashed Potatoes and String Beans. Service is quick and the employees are very friendly. For just $9.53, the amount of food that I received was incredibly generous! Texas Sliced Brisket Sandwich - The sliced brisket was OVERFLOWING! Nicely presented in between a soft sandwich roll, the brisket was quite tender and juicy. I loved their original BBQ sauce which added a wonderful sweet and smoky flavor! I also tried their spicy BBQ sauce which maintained the smokiness with a great kick! Sides - I will admit that I am not normally a potatoes girl, but their mashed potatoes were very good! Fluffy, creamy, and their gravy was my absolute favorite! I also enjoyed their green beans which incorporated diced ham. Overall, Willard's is a solid choice for BBQ in the area. Anyone rating Willard's below 4 or 5 stars legitimately doesn't know what BBQ is all about. Seriously, someone gave them 1 star because the bathrooms were both occupied. This is a great place for all different types of BBQ. The pork is North Carolina style, which is not my bag, but they have Kansas City style ribs and burnt ends which are excellent! The beef brisket is also very good. You don't even need sauce as the meat has so much flavor. Most meats are served with little to no sauce and you add as much or as little as you like with 4 or 5 types to choose from. The menu is vast as far as BBQ goes and there are at least 10 sides to choose from. Great cornbread as well. The style of the restaurant: Walk up to a counter, order/pay, when your order is complete they will call you to come and grab it. Lots of seating in two different rooms. This place was exactly what I needed after a 4+ hour drive from NJ. It's conveniently located right off Rt. 28 and near major hotels. There's plenty of parking available and some pretty good BBQ to be had. I'm no connoisseur of "real pit BBQ," but I thoroughly enjoyed what I ordered. Trio Platter (3 meats, 2 sides--$14.99): I went with the NC Pulled Pork, KC Burnt Ends, and the Texas Sliced Brisket with a side of collard greens and cole slaw; a slice of corn bread comes with each platter. I have a large appetite, but this was a lot of food for me. All three meats were flavorful and tender, but I prefer the burnt ends and brisket (in that order). The collard greens were good, and the cole slaw was creamy and freshly made. As for the corn bread, it was just "okay;" it didn't blow me away. My table also ordered a Burnt Ends Platter ($11.99) (with green beans and baked beans) and a special menu item that I believe is called "Texas Teaser Play" (~$11.99) with dirty rice and collard greens (not entirely sure on the name and price). Both were said to be good, but the "Teaser" was clearly a sampler of sliced sausage, brisket, and pulled pork. Ok, so, point blank - I WANTED to love this place. Heaven knows the DMV area is woefully deficient of good BBQ. Lunchtime client meeting here today on a recco from the client. Serious lunchtime line = good sign and they had one. I understand that they ALWAYS have one. Duct tape on the booth seats to cover the rips... uhm... debatable. They also only have one bathroom for men and one bathroom for women (of course) which each (surprise!) accomodate only ONE person at a time. Huh??? Not good after drinking a bunch ice tea/lemonade/Arnold Palmer combos like I indulged in. On to the food... I ordered an assortment of some of my faves. Beef brisket, burnt ends and some St Louis style ribs. All came with 2 sides and a hunk of cornbread. My sides were cole slaw and dirty rice. The rice was seasoned. The cole slaw was as unremarkable as slaw is in most places (I ordered it just to move my ordering process along since I was good with only one side). My client let me stick a fork in her mac 'n cheese. Similarly unremarkable. The brisket was wonderfully textured... super soft... nice smoke ring.....moist... but flavorless and bland. Likewise with the ribs. They TRULY "slid off the bone" like everyone likes to brag but rarely deliver... but again... bland. The burnt ends had a bit of seasoning. The cornbread was meh. This place has an assortment of sauces to try. Personally, I'm not a "sauce guy", but rather believe meats shouldn't require dipping, dunking, drowning or slathering to compensate for flavor or seasoning that should have been accomplished in the kitchen. This joint NEEDS sauces. I just warmed up the remainder of my lunch (you get sizable portions here) and all of the little bit of juiciness that I had earlier is completely gone and now I feel like I have a brick in my stomach. Dirty rice and baked beans, macaroni and potato salad, the creamiest mac and cheese just to name a few. Williams's has fabulous ribs, and fabulous sausage, and fabulous, well, all of their food is fabulous! We eat here regularly, and we are picky about our BBQ as we came from Texas. Willards has a decent selection of sides as well as a great selection of meats, and their regular sauce is a perfect compliment to the meats. I was trading messages with Deanna about getting BBQ and she prompted me with a question of "what kind?" I had no idea - I figured BBQ was BBQ. Whoa, was I out of the loop! One of the great things about Willard's is that if you're a total BBQ snob and picky about getting a specific kind of BBQ, they'll have it. NC style, southern style, Texas style, Tennessee style, whatever. If you've never been before, prepare to be overwhelmed. If you suffer from indecisiveness when faced with many options, avoid Willard's at all costs! Service is totally prompt. After ordering at the cashier, I had my giant Styrofoam platter of jerk chicken in hand within a couple of minutes and boy was it good! A ridiculous amount of food for ~$10. Juicy, flavorful chicken lightly crisped on the outside; creamy mac and cheese; REAL mashed potatoes (skins and all) and an enormous hunk of cornbread. And that's only the half order of jerk chicken - they offer a whole - reserved for gluttons (of which, apparently, they thought I might be). I do kind of wish they offered smaller servings (maybe at a lower price point). Half the amount of food I got would have been plenty. Upon arriving we realize that the parking lot has very limited parking and can be very tight. You can tell from looking at the store from the outside that seating would be limited. Luckily we didn't have anywhere to go so we were in no rush to order so we pretty much stood around until seats became available. After about 5 to 10 minutes people began leaving. Their menu is pretty vast so it was kind of hard to decide. However, my wife and I decided to go with the two meat platter. I hate (yes I'm using the H word) to give this place only 3 stars. I had a great time here tonight meeting Yelp Carnivore Crew foodies - 5 stars for that. But the food - just 3 stars there :( I am going to repeat what others have said from earlier tonight - Venu N, Tru-Van L, Katie F, Alicia C, Clint U (last year). I am a Southern guy at heart and love my Sweet Tea. That was the first BIG disappointment for me - why even offer Sweet Tea if you cannot make it right? Isn't VA the capital of the South? And since we once were, why can't we get good Sweet Tea in NOVA?? For my food I had NC Pulled Pork with side of Mashed Potato and Black-Eyed Corn. The Pulled Pork was good but a bit too bland with the measly amount of sauce on top. I know you have to jazz it up with sauce on the table, yada yada, but I believe the basic dish must and should have a character of its own - that is what sets a restaurant apart from the others. I did add some spicy BBQ sauce which did have some kick to it, but then I felt I was eating mushed up (pork) buffalo wings! Would give it passing grade... Sides - both sides were all right - nothing good to write home about. Wish I had ordered the Potato salad as others liked that better than any other side. When I finally made it to the front, I ordered my BBQ platter which consisted of bbq ribs, beef brisket and kc burnt ends. For sides, I chose mashed pots (yes, mashed metal...dorks) and green beans. It was only a few minutes before my meal had been plated and put in the window ready for me to take back to my table. The platter also included a big hunk of cornbread. The pots and beans were good - though I still think mac and cheese would have gone better with it all. The beef brisket was quite tasty - though I know some other yelpers had issues with the brisket. Mine however, was very good and I have no complaints. My burnt ends were not great - definitely burnt but kinda boring, yet not entirely inedible. The ribs (2) were good - plenty of meat on them and flavorful. I thought my cornbread was kind of dry. It wasn't rock hard or anything like that but I prefer my cornbread to be a little more moist and buttery. I'm no BBQ expert, but I say that Willard's was good overall. The place is a bit bigger than I was led to believe via event threads. We did sort of take over the whole place but there were still several tables for other patrons to sit at. Oh... my... wow. I'm thinking this is more like 1 and 1/2 stars! Let me start by saying I am a NC BBQ snob. I grew up on the best. Parker's BBQ in Wilson, NC. Whatever I ate last night was NOT NC BBQ. I've always heard good things about Willards, so after a rather exhausting slash frustrating trip to Wally World, I thought I would grab something quick for dinner and high tail it down Route 28. When I arrived, I noticed how clean the place was, at least the dining area. That's a plus! I do not like the menu board. Everything is crammed together and located way up in the air. Thank baby Jesus they had a printed paper menu on the counter or I probably would have just left. I ordered the NC BBQ platter with Black Eyed Corn, Dirty Rice, Mashed Potatoes, Corn Bread and an Ice Tea. There was an absurd amount of food for $14.00, so there is certainly something to be said for portion size. The staff there was very nice, very prompt and seemed like they were generally happy to server their customers. I noticed a few of the reviews mentioned the employees being a bit rude. I don't know if I lucked out and got a good group or if management addressed the issue, but I never had a problem with the service. Keep in mind I took my food to go... but here is a break down of what I thought about my dinner... Black Eyed Corn - combine black eyed peas, corn and a bit of tomato sauce, yum! This was my favorite thing on the plate. Mashed Potatoes - the potatoes themselves where great, I honestly don't think they were instant as there were a few chunks here and there. Sometimes there is a tad bit of a mustard flavor, but mostly it is vinegar. So someone explain to me why my vinegar based BBQ was topped with a red BBQ sauce? Grrr! There is no such thing as KC Masterpiece in North Carolina. Now I am going to refer you to the photo I took of my dinner, when I lifted up the corn bread, there was LITERALLY ¼ cup of grease pooled off to the side of my pork. WTF? I went and got a spoon and a measuring up and actually spooned the grease off of my dinner... not happy. The tea was actually really good... and so is the habanero vinegar. I was expecting something with a little kick... that s*%t is no joke!! So basically I wasn't impressed but wasn't totally unhappy with Willards. I will never get the NC BBQ again. Ever. Really, I would give this place 3.5 stars. Went here with a group of people. We ordered the Snackpack for 8 which came out to $27.99 You get a pint of meat, 2 sides, pickles, and some bread rolls. We chose the burnt ends, black eyed corn, and collard greens. I also got a 1/3 rack of ribs. The ribs were good. A little dry. But I would definitely order this again. The black eyed corn was okay. It tasted like regular black eyed corn. So I would say it was just average. Collard greens.. was good. I like collard greens. I think these should have been softer though. Another person in our group felt there should have been bacon in it? The cornbread was also dry. But it was better than others i've tried. I would definitely come back here. They're good. Cheap. At first I was astounded this place didn't have higher ratings on Yelp, but then I realized that people can be very opinionated and snobbish when it comes to barbecue. I've been to Willard's many times now, and have Generally followed the advice of The Washington Posts's Tom Sietsema, who basically said everything is good here, as long as it comes from a pig. Recently I tried the burnt ends, and realized that I should have stuck with Tom's advice. It pales in comparison to the ribs and pulled pork. I do think the pulled pork is better than any I've had in DC, but again this is a matter personal preference. Willard's is juicy and flavorful and hasn't been stripped of every last morsel of fat. It's also served without sauce, which means you can enjoy as is or have a choice of several sauces with which to flavor your meal. If you aren't sharing, I recommend getting the sandwich, because the platter portion is just obscene. For sides, I recommend the slaw and the dirty rice. 4 stars because of the great pork, great atmosphere, and great value. One star deducted for the dry burnt ends. read more

In my opinion, this is the best pulled pork or burnt end sandwich you can get around here (Famous Dave's and Red Hot and Blue can't compete on the sammich). They do not put a lot of sauce on the meat for you, but they have a variety of sauces at the condiment stand, so you can sauce your sandwich as much as you'd like. I haven't been impressed by any of the meats other than the pulled pork or burnt ends, and other than the mashed potatoes the sides are kinda 'meh'. The three things keeping me from giving this place a higher rating are the service, the sweet tea, and the fries/hushpuppies. As other reviewers have noted, the staff here never seems the least bit cheerful, which doesn't exactly liven up the meal. Their sweet tea is better than no sweet tea at all, but it's not all that good. Finally, they don't have fries or hush puppies. If you're not going to do fries that's fine, same with hush puppies, but a BBQ joint has to have one or the other, not having either is crazy. That said, I happily make the trip to Willard's a couple of times a year because I like the sandwiches themselves so much, and so should you. read more

Strip malls everywhere with your typical Applebee's, TGI Fridays, etc. Though this place is in a strip mall, don't judge this book by its cover. I was in the area for five days of work, went here on my second day, then again on my third day, then again on my fourth. Yeah, it was that good. The first time I had the pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese and string beans. The beans didn't do it for me, but who cares about vegetables in a BBQ joint? The second time I was a wuss and went with the big salad. Why did I do this? Because I knew damn well I'd be going back the following day for more BBQ so I considered the salad a means of detox. The third time I had the brisket sandwich with macaroni salad and cole slaw. Everything was delicious. Very affordable prices. As far as I'm concerned you can skip the platters and just get the sandwiches and not eat the bread (both come with sides, but the platter comes with corn bread). I don't know how much more meat they give you in the platters versus the sandwiches, but I had more than enough meat with the sandwiches. There's no kid's menu either, but that's usually not a problem bc I'll order my little girl sides. But here, all the sides I tried had spice to it, even the pasta salad. She ended up eating cornbread-that's it. My husband loves the pit bbq flavor, but I didn't like this one. I had pulled pork and didn't like the Smokey flavor. It's hard to find great BBQ in NOVA. But, my cousin found me a BBQ pit that's among the best in the area. NC pulled pork was slightly different taste from other pulled pork I've had. Seemed to have a tinge of sourness or vinegar. Loved that I can add the different sauces to my likings. Ribs were tender and seasoned right. Great BBQ for Great price. read more

Easily the best barbeque around the Fairfax area. Portion sizes are generous. Staff is friendly and pretty quick. The pulled pork is North Carolina style (vinegar-based) but not overly vinegary like some I've had. The beef brisket is amazing. Nice smokey flavor, very tender, moist and well done on the ends just perfectly. This is my favorite thing at Willard's. Potato salad was very good. Not much to add except that I liked it alot. Baked Beans were good. They have that semi-burnt/dark taste to them. Not the best I've ever had, but good. Cornbread was ok. It had a good flavor, but it seemed just a tad dry for me. (This could have been due to me coming in 20 min before they closed.) Extra BBQ sauce and a few other sauces are available if you want extra. Sodas, Sweet Tea, and Lemonade are self-serve. Last night the tea seemed a tad strong/bitter to me, but I don't remember that being the case in the past. read more
