Vietnamese Barbecue Pork was delicious. It was served on a bed of noodles and spinach. The dish was accompanied by Asian slaw and assorted vegetables. My husband had a seafood dish that contained shrimp, mussels, calamari, peppers, zucchini and broccoli. The seafood was perfectly cooked. It was all served in a mild curry broth. We have eaten here several times and never been disappointed. The service is fast and friendly and the food is unparalleled in Cambria. We started with the " mandatory " salmon cream cheese wantons. They are consistently delicious. Then I had the Vietnamese pork and vegetable rolls. They were quite tasty and the dipping sauce is not too spicy and yummy. My friend had the chicken chow mein that was chock full of vegetables. She said it was very fresh and full of flavor. We would order everything again! This was the third time BF and I have been to Wild Ginger. I am very surprised at the poor reviews, because every time weve gone, we have had nothing but friendly and prompt service and tasty food. Weve chosen different plates and have been very satisfied. It may cost more than what you're used to, but you are in Cambria and will pay $4 for a coffee, so I don't understand why people will pay more for their fancy latte and end up complaining about paying a few dollars more for excellent tasting food that focuses more on quality and not quantity. The food are aweful. We ordered crispy chicken wing and it was not crispy at all. We also order chow fun and the appearance of the food was horrible. Looks like they just stir fried whatever the leftover they have. We did not get the chow fun but they give us thin noodle instead. :( Worst of all the restaurant charged us $0.50 for a cup of water. Just awful. I ordered the Singapore laksa, ordinarily one of my favorite dishes. What I received bore zero resemblance to the actual dish. It was an absolutely flavorless dish of soggy rice noodles, bland broth, and what seemed to be the steamed veggies bag you buy at the supermarket (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, snap peas). And some slices of hard boiled egg and some prawns. No tofu, no bean sprouts, maybe a quarter teaspoon of chopped peanuts. They should be ashamed of serving something like that. And charging $20 for it? My companion was convinced it was a microwave dinner. I don't think it was, but it was of that caliber. His Thai green curry chicken was equally flavorless. How do you screw up green curry? With a weird side of strawberry chutney to boot. I only had a couple of nights in town and felt so cheated by my meal here. And worried I'd get food poisoning--the food was that sketchy. Next time I'll go to Robin's both nights--have never had a bad meal there. read more

And that's when the pain started. As it turns out the owner Deb also doubles as a waitress. This is unfortunate because her temperament is so foul that she has no business interacting with customers. I can't review the food because it never arrived at our table. After waiting an hour with numerous assurances that it would only be a couple minutes more, we paid for our drinks and left. The green curry chicken was something anyone could make - it was not authentic at all and hardly had any flavor. The calimari was tiny little pieces in a viscous sauce. It tasted like a re-heat. Not very happy with the food. It's a really small place but we went early so got seats. Pros : Fried Tofu with Peanut Sauce was good. Soup was okay. Cons : Quantity and prices seem to be a total mismatch. I expected the prices to be higher. Prawn curry was bland and had to ask for extra peanut sauce to finish it. I love this little restaurant. Everything I've ever ordered here was delicious and just a little different from how I typically get it at home. But in a good way. Nice bright flavors. Lots of veggies that are obviously of super high quality and freshness. I only make it up here for one week in the summer, but over the last several years, the food has been consistently good. I see a lot of complaints about the prices, but I feel they are fair if you consider the quality of the ingredients. If I was trying to save a few dollars when eating here, I believe they always have a vegetarian soup option. These have proven to be both flavorful and frugal. Delicious! I've been wanting to try this place for ages, but people we have traveled with were more... Traditional? Anyway, this time it was just my husband and I, so we gave it a go. The menu is has plenty of choice and variety without being overwhelming. We tried specials of the day; I had some butter lettuce wraps with ground chicken, and my husband had pork chow mein. The food was pricey and tasteless. We ordered the PAD THAI noodles with chicken. It had very little chicken, and vegetables. It was prepared with plain dry noodles with no taste. The Basil chicken came with A small amount of rice noodles with out any sauces. It was just dry boiled noodles with out any taste. My hustand ordered the same noodles and said it was also too plain and with out any flavor. We old ordered three main dishes, one beer and one wine and it and the bill came out to about $80 dollars. Chef Debbie exceeded our expectations1 It was the simple elegant execution of extraordinary Asian fusion. We stumbled on the Wild Ginger for dinner and was wonderfully surprised. The place is relatively small but the food and service was outstanding. We were very impressed with the Calamari appetizer. I had the Thai Green Chicken Curry entree; and my wife had the Vietnamese Caramelized Prawns. We were so impressed with the service and food that we came back the next day for lunch. Tried the specials tonight......crispy pork wontons and bbq pork chow mein. Also ordered the sesame chicken, and took home a few pies from the case. Everything was great!! Vegetables were fresh, the meats were not over or under cooked, and the sauces were perfect; not too much or too little. I will come back, most definitely. I have read quite a bit of the comments from past experiences and our experience was far from those noting bad customer service and so called "bad food." Seriously, please ignore them them. They are extremely vague and non-specific; just a bunch of pissing and moaning about how their ridiculously high expectations were not met. Cambria is a small town and I have been coming here for over 25 years. I have tried over 90% of the restaurants here and in San Simeon. Wild Ginger has been here for 15 years and have a great mixture of Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese dishes. The owner and waiters are straight to the point; they are making a business with making you food. They are not here to kiss your ass. Just act normal when you walk in, ask questions about the dishes before you order, don't act like you are God's gift to this world, and be patient. If you want quality, then you have to wait. We were greeted warmly & attended to quickly. Deborah Mok, the owner, took our order & was very helpful with suggestions on how to share our meals with each other as we hadn't brought a big appetite. We ended up ordering the albacore 'special of the day' & the Vietnamese carmelized prawns. We shared a crispy calamari salad which was delicious with a good portion of calamari. The presentation of our dinners was excellent & the veggies were cooked perfectly. Whereas some patrons have complained about small portions, we thought they were just right with a large portion of albacore (cooked medium rare which turned out to be just right for the size cut that was served) while my wife's serving of prawns was very generous. We were attended to by a young lady as well as the owner and although Deborah did spend time laughing with the local couple, we never felt ignored as we were brought into the conversation on occasion. We felt the pricing matched the quality & portions of the cuisine. Deborah spent time suggesting a location in our home town where we could find tofu "to die for". We feel we've found yet another excellent dining establishment in one of our favorite weekend getaway locations! read more

Some of these reviews are a bit exaggerated. A dump? Hardly, unless nothing less than white tablecloths & Riedel stemware will do. If you like the food you must be a local with no taste? Totally ridiculous & pretty presumptuous. Glad to know PA's taste speaks for all. It would appear Cambria isn't PA's cup of tea anyway. Size - Wild Ginger is very small & it takes no reservations, so yes, anything beyond 2-4 can be a problem, depending. OTOH, if it's not busy, the tall tables can be pushed together. There are 7 tables inside & 5 outside, so seating capacity is very limited. At times, we've had to gamely eat outdoors in our coats under the heaters. Go into it knowing the limitations & you'll be fine. If it doesn't work out on a particular night, so be it. There are other places to move on to, but don't ding it for being what it is - very small & walk-in only. Ambiance - small, casual cafe. It's not a dump & it's not without any charm. It is small & casual, though. Wine served in juice glasses, for example, instead of stemware. Price - those complaining about the price reflect limited knowledge of small tourist towns with long off-seasons. Businesses have to survive the long off seasons, so pricing will reflect this. Cambria is not packed with tourists year around. Yes, the food is not inexpensive, but given the circumstances, it's exactly what I would expect to pay. Meal size - I think the meal size is average for a restaurant. If you're looking for Cheesecake Factory proportions, you will be disappointed, but otherwise, the portions are just fine. This isn't a restaurant that serves you tapas-size servings on a regular plate or anything like that. Service - if you are in a hurry or expect to be fawned over, yes, this probably isn't your kind of place. The pace is slower & you won't get fine dining-level service. Most of the servers we've encountered have been sort of neutral. Not rude or cold, but not warm & friendly, either. Just sort of there. I think there is legitimacy in some of the complaints about feeling put off about the service & the owner, but we started going for the food & with that being the focus, we were never disappointed. At this point, the owner recognizes us, so yes, we're apparently now in the disparaged category of those getting warm service from the owner. Well, we've eaten many meals there over the years during our once or twice a year trips to Cambria. For the first few years, we just quietly came & went & enjoyed the food. If warm, fawning service is important to you, you will probably need to look elsewhere. OTOH, it doesn't equal the Soup Nazi, either. I think PA's complaint about the vegetarian mix-up is legitimate, but I can't help but be curious how it was handled on PA's end. Anyway, it is what it is & there are enough reviews here that you can go into it knowing what to expect. Food - we have never had a bad meal here. The salmon cream cheese wontons are wonderful, as are the the lemon pudding cake & the pumpkin cheese cake (seasonal). I never order from the regular menu for entrees. Always from the specials board & I've never been disappointed. The garnishes are always fresh & phenomenal. Blueberries, strawberries, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, cucumber, etc. Seaweed salad was part of my entree this trip. Very good. In sum, we love this place & have eaten many meals there over the years. There can be issues with seating due to the small size, it is very casual, & the service is going to be slower in pace, usually, & not of the fawning variety. If you don't expect it to be something it's not, you should have a very enjoyable experience. We find Deborah's food to be amazing & despite PA's comment to the contrary, we are neither local nor lacking in savvy when it comes to food. Very nice and cozy place for lunch. We are vegetarians and found enough options. Had the vegetable dumpling, jicama and mango salad and thai basil with tofu and schezwan tofu and the sauteed spinach + tofu. I had the displeasure of dining here while on vacation with my family. The food was overpriced ($14 for pad thai?!) and it took roughly 30 minutes for our meal to arrive. My pad thai finally arrived and it was terrible. The noodles were stuck together and it was very bland. My mom and sister tried it and agreed. I decided to send it back, which is something I rarely do. The server was very nice and apologetic and took my plate away. She asked if I wanted to order something else, but I decided against doing so because of the long wait time for the food. This is where the pleasantries ended. After a few minutes, the owner came out to our table. She seemed angry the moment she approached. Her opening line was "I hear we have a problem here!". I knew it was going to be bad. When she asked me why I sent the pad thai back, I told her that I did not like it. She pointed at a nearby table and told me that they liked it, so why didn't I! She then told me that since I had eaten half of it, which I had not, she would give me half off. I had to argue with this woman about how much of her terrible pad thai I actually ate. After a few more rounds, she stomped away. When the server presented the check, I was relieved to see that the pad thai had been taken off of the total. I have been a server for 8 years, and I have never seen a customer treated the way the owner of this establishment treated me. It was shameful! I hope this review serves as a warning to poor, unsuspecting out-of-towners who stumble upon this place! read more

But open up to the fusion idea and the food here is excellent, well thought out and prepared and presented. We went for dinner one evening and found the service helpful and prompt. I liked the mix of various SE Asian cuisines (it is not often you find Indonesian style ... ) and the presentation. Portions were a good size without being either wastefully large or chic nouveau minuscule. The food here is amazing - so fresh and "burns clean" as my husband says. Asian Fusion - mm--mm! We have been coming to Cambria for years, and we always eat one or two of our meals here. I would give 5 stars but the service can sometimes be a little slow because she gets a lot of take out orders ( the locals love her food). I always tend to judge a lunch/dinner restaurant by its dinner salad: how fresh is it? Does it feel like it's just picked? are there interesting vegetables mixed in? Is the dressing light (not too oily or too sweet) yet flavorful? Wild Ginger wins the prize for all of these questions, and then you come to the entrees! My fave is the Vietnamese Shrimp, and rice pilaf and a delectable array of veggies with a few fresh fruit pieces to freshen your palate. Everything is perfectly spiced for my taste - not too little, not too much. Deborah the owner is originally from Singapore, interesting to talk with if it's not too busy. Unfortunately, we had a poor experience here and will NEVER go back. The waitress was lovely and competent but the food was subpar. In addition, when you charge $17 for pad thai and $22 for a chicken curry, I expect that you will refill my soda for free. That is not the case and the soda glasses are small to begin with. We ordered the large Tom Kah Gai soup to share and what we got was a not even full bowl of what looked like Campbell's cream of mushroom soup to which coconut was added and then a few fresh mushrooms were thrown in. No lemon grass, no galangal root, no green onions, only a couple of little pieces of chicken thigh meat. Bleh. The only flavor that came through in the soup was the overwhelming chili spice. The pad thai was dry and flavorless. I mean, how hard is it to make good pad thai?! The chicken curry was okay. We boxed up our food and went next door and ordered a pizza.
