Whyte Avenue is a great summer festival season destination, but it's also a nice place to visit for food, shopping and other things year-round. There are lots of great stores (some of which are pretty unique too!) and restaurants. It's a colourful place with an interesting crowd depending on what else is going on in the area. I've been here for parties, festivals, special events, theatre and more! It is quite popular with the university student crowd. That said, it's imperfect: some of what makes it awesome is also what causes issues: it's a pretty popular place with the late night crowd and can get very busy/crazy on occasion. Additionally, these events/festivals can cause trash and whatnot. It's busy enough that parking can be limited and transit from downtown is sometimes awkward. But it's a great destination to reach on foot. And there is reasonably good transit to this area. I definitely recommend a visit, particularly during the summer months. read more

I love Whyte Ave in all seasons! There is such an interesting and varied assortment of shops, restaurants, and bars along the Ave, that there is something for everyone! Living close enough to Whyte to bike, or even walk, means I have multiple ways of transporting myself to and from the avenue. Public transit is easy to access as well. Parking can be a bit of an issue, but with some patience, a spot can be found (either at a meter, a parking lot, or a street a few blocks away). read more

This is THE place to shop and hang out in Edmonton. This trendy area of the city is filled with great local shops, a couple tattoo parlours and wonderful restaurants. There are also numerous salons and spas as well. Most stores along Whyte are locally owned, one of a kind, Edmonton stores, but there are a couple of chain stores on and around Whyte Avenue. This is also the place for nightlife in Edmonton, There are many bars of all kinds along this strip. There is a country bar, many dance bars, some martini bars, lounges, sports bars and pubs. If you are coming to Edmonton from out of town, there are a couple of hotels on Whyte avenue as well. Just be aware that the area can get a little rowdy at night (especially on hot summer nights) and if you have a 6am business meeting, you might want to choose a different location. ...so many hipsters. I guess you could say this place is Edmonton's own little piece of New York and Boston. After living in those two cities within the last few years, it's weird seeing this kind of place in an un-trendy city like Edmonton. The food spots around here are great, as are the clothing stores. I would so give this place a 5-star review, but it attracts the worst kind of hipsters: Wannabee Hipsters. These are the hipsters that want to be like the ones in Brooklyn, NY, but since they can't achieve such a status in a city like Edmonton, they take their pretension level to an all new high. Trust me on this one: there's nothing more pretentious than someone who wants to be a hipster, but isn't a real hipster just yet. They are like a self parody. I walked into the Starbucks on Whyte and there was a hipster ranting about how he hates large corporations and only shops at indie stores...but he's sitting..in..a Starbucks. I just left NY and now hipsters followed me to Edmonton? Not cool, man! read more

Whyte Avenue is the trendy, hipster strip of Edmonton. It's a culture all its own! This street is full of innumerable stores so if you like to shop, this is the place for you. Although Whyte Ave does have a few mainstream stores (American Apparel, Lulu Lemon), most of the stores are pretty obscure and unique so they are a lot of fun to explore. One of my favorite stores on Whyte is Polly Magoos. To me, this store represents what Whyte Ave is all about. It's hip, it's unique, it's a little bit granola, and it's a little far out gypsyish. It's awesome! There are also some amazing coffee shops, restaurants, and desert places on Whyte. Forget Starbucks and Second Cup, try Block 1912 or Cafe Dabar (which is, by far, my favorite place to hang out on Whyte). There is also a plethora of clubs and pubs on Whyte which is a big part of why it's always hopping. Whyte Ave is a great place to go for a walk in the summer because there is always something happening. It is also the central location for quite a few of Edmonton's many festivals. Whyte Ave is in the top 2 most recognizable avenues in the city. It's one of the few things that many out of towners want to visit when they come to our city. The Ave is lined with plenty of trendy clothing and musical stores among other things. It also has a good selection of restaurants which makes it a great place to shop during the summer. Almost every patio on Whyte is packed with people taking in the sun during the summer time. Besides stores and food spots, Whyte Ave is home to a bunch of night clubs, bars and lounges. It gets even more busy at night when everyone is just looking for a good time. For the most part it is usually a great time. read more

Who knew you could review an Avenue? I guess I have a love/hate relationship with Whyte Ave. Love that everything you could ever need is within walking distance!! Hate that traffic is always RIDICULOUS: add a special event and it is utter chaos! Love spending a few hours walking up and down the Ave on a nice, sunny, summer day; people watching, eating, shopping. Hate the garbagy/pukey stink that lingers all morning after a Friday or Saturday night. Love the unique, boutique-y type shops and all of the super neat stuff they have. Not a huge fan of all the big business saturation that seems to be happening more and more lately. Seems as though the smaller, non-chain type stores are being slowly, but surely, squeezed out of the neighborhood. Generally speaking, I think the area is pretty safe during the day; however, as a petite young woman, I would not feel very comfortable walking around alone after dark. When I lived on Whyte Ave, I spent a lot of time around there. Now that I have moved to another area of the city, trips to Whyte Ave more rare, although usually enjoyed! read more

My favourite part of edmonton. I live just 4 blocks away and love that I am a short walk away from everything I could possibly need. There are lots of funky little places and very few chains, which I think is really cool. It gets pretty crazy on the weekends due to all the bars and clubs, but the police presence is very good. It is also a short walk from the beautiful river valley. Both summer and winter you will also see lights strung up through the trees and live music playing either from the buskers or from the businesses themselves. Feels like home. read more

Way back in 1997, when I was in highschool, I finally happened upon this avenue and since then I have always loved coming here. I swear I've been hanging around this Ave to shop or kill time at least twice a month in the past 14 years or so. It has to the be the atmosphere because I'm a very laid back guy and that's what you get at this place. I'd rather walk down this Ave and shop in pouring rain than do it inside a Shopping Mall. It's my go to place if I'm bored and if I need to shop for 2nd hand music this is the only bloody place in the whole City that sells used music, outside of a Flea Market and couple other stores owned by the same guy (Supertunes). Anyway, best place to spend my cash is here. Crap load of book stores here but I wish they had some store that sold movies though. There's only one place and it's in a whole on the far West end of the Ave so I don't venture over there often. read more

I'm a big fan of Whyte Avenue and always have been. If I were writing this review in the 70's, I'd have probably given it 5 stars. Whyte Avenue has always been an entertainment and business street. It was the main street of the City of Strathcona until Strathcona and Edmonton merged into the single City of Edmonton in 1912. Up until then, it was and is the centre of life for the south side. A few years ago, it was really an eclectic place. The Roseland Ballroom stood where the RBC is now. So, weekend evenings, people would be out in their finery going out for ballroom dancing. Next to the Roseland was Mr. John's, Edmonton last and only haberdasher. Devine was Devine Decadence and located under what's now Funky Pickle and was the pipeline of Doc Marten's and suspenders to Edmonton's fledgling punker scene. The Avenue had two theatres, the lamentably closed Varscona and the Princess. You could bowl ten pin upstairs at Scona Bowl. The old Post Office Building had a post office in it. Hub News was on the street as well as Greenwoods Books and Edmonton Books. Dadeo's space was a diner and the jukeboxes in the booths actually worked and they had a soda fountain. Uncle Albert's ruled the corner of Whyte and 104th with line ups every weekend for breakfast. There was a real mix of locally owned businesses (tailors, dry-cleaners), banks, venues, diners, pubs, neighbourhood bars, bookstores and independent coffee shops. I've spent a few weeks a year in NYC since the 1970s because I've got family out there. The irony from Chukwuma's review is that the hipster neighbourhoods in Brooklyn and the Lower East Side were just urban blight run by drug dealers, but Whyte Avenue was catering to the hipsters of that time as it had for the 80 or so years before that. If there are hipsters on Whyte Avenue now, they've been there for the last hundred years. If anything, Prospect Heights and the LES are now a little piece of Whyte Avenue. But, all that's really left of the old Whyte Avenue is the north side of the Avenue between 107 and 109 Streets where the music stores, Friends and Neighbours and the Scottish store continue to survive. Where Whyte Avenue doesn't work, IMHO, is that it now wants to be W 14th Street when the Palladium, Nell's and the Limelight were the centre of NYC club culture. I don't think it works. It doesn't even exist in NYC anymore. While I enjoy walking up the Avenue on a Saturday morning to the Farmer's Market, people watching and getting my organic groceries, I can't stand the place at night. Too many drunk kids from the suburbs running wild. The B&T crowd killed the club scene in NYC and seems to be running down Whyte Avenue now. I still think there are enough interesting businesses and places to eat to make the Avenue an interesting destination, especially on warm Summer days. I'm really looking forward to some of these clubs closing though and more variety of businesses moving back in. read more

I moved to Edmonton about 2 years ago and everybody here raved about 'Whyte Avenue'. So, I finally made my way down to 82 avenue to check out the place to be and be seen. I could not believe what I saw! Whyte Avenue is a dump. The sidewalks are not wide enough for people to stroll and window shop. The Avenue is filthy. The shops on Whyte Avenue are nothing to write home about. The only shop that is distinctive is the retailer Gravity Pope. Other than that, the stores amount to 'Army and Navy'( whoopie ding), the typical coffee and cafes that are not special. A few speciality clothing and trinket type stores which beg buyers that have some international knowing. Edmontonians seem to love Lululemon as every body (including men)that should never be seen in spandex wears this brand and naturally, Whyte Avenue does have a Lululemon location. So, that is about it for Whtyte. I seriously had to walk and drive the entire length of Whyte Avenue because on first perview, I thought that I was on the 'wrong' end of the Avenue and thought there had to be more to this much bragged about Avenue...well, there is not. I feel sorry for Edmontonians when all they have to call their crowning glory is Whyte Avenue. Update: I believe that I need to review my original one star review for Whyte avenue and now I am putting Whyte Avenue in the three star range or it should really be a 3.5 star. After living in Edmonton for over five years now, I have found this city really grows on you and Whyte avenue with it's eclectic charm has certainly done that for me. If the street had wider sidewalks and more areas to sit down and enjoy the street then I would probably boost the rating to four stars. read more

Embedded in south -central Edmonton, Whyte Ave is part of historical location of Old Strathcona. Its history runs from late 1800-1900s where, at that time full of brick buildings and railway station. Now home to many local business eg- restaurants and shops. There are independent and chain stores/ restaurants. City streetlife is what makes it unique to Edmonton. No matter what time of year, streets are busy with people, shopping or just enjoying foodie experience. There are bars and clubs located on this street as well and located close to University of Alberta and Old Scona Highschool. Surrounding area residential, there are a few churches located right on the strip. Summertime patios are the best and the festivals that take place within the streets allowing parts to shut down to get the true festival experience. Old Strathcona Farmer's Market open and adjacent to Whyte Ave.Very busy, but has street parking and parking lots all around. read more

I am proudly on the bandwagon of people here on Yelp who love Whyte. I adore walking up and down the ave and taking in all the different restaurant's and shops. We are definitely a city of big box stores but if you prefer to shop small locally owned stores you can usually find what your looking for here. Some of the highlights in my opinion include Wee Book Inn,Plaid Giraffe,Princess Theater,Block 1912,and Loft 82. The ave also comes alive in summer for the Fringe festival and was one of the first areas in my opinion to start strongly promoting winter activities in Edmonton with the Ice on Whyte Festival. (I also have to send props out to the promoters of the Silver Skate festival for also assisting with that). Yes it can get a little wild on the weekends when young people are out at the bars but much like Kristi L stated the police presence down here is strong and I still feel those young and old can find something great to explore out on Whyte. read more
