The Old Strathcona Antique Mall is a fun place to check out if you're around Old Strathcona/Whyte Ave. There's free parking lot for patrons, which is a bonus in this area of Edmonton. They are the largest antique store in Western Canada, and so there is a lot to see here. From vintage license plates to toys to furniture to everything in between (and then some). I like coming here just to browse and see what they have. The Old Strathcona Antique Mall is filled with different antique/vintage vendors so trying to hunt down a particular item can be hard, and might be in more than one spot. That said I've been on the hunt for vintage travel postcards from specific destinations I've visited (and there's a particular style I want). Postcards are in several different spots so when I come here I try to go through them all. I've done pretty well on my mission, but there are still some destinations I don't have. Had a great afternoon checking out the Old Strathcona Antique Mall with girlfriends on the hunt for a High Tea tiered cake/treat plate. It was surprisingly busy this past Sunday - I'm used to this place only having a couple shoppers. It's so much fun to poke around and look for a particular item or lazily stroll on a cold day. My kids' always find some trinket to ask a million questions about and of course they love the candy section with old time favourites and unusual editions like chocolate pop rocks. My favourite is the ground floor with all the antique dishes and housewares. My kids and hubs like upstairs a little more where memorabilia and toys seems to live. Either way, it's always a good day at Old Strathcona Antique Mall. Plus they've got an inhouse café with pie and old fashioned ice cream :-) See you soon Old Strathcona Antique Mall! P.S. The staff here are fabulous and often know which little section or lot of items has what you are looking for. If you're a fan of antiques, this is probably the best place for you to go and browse. It is HUGE and there are so many things to see and find amongst the bizarre areas of the store. Once a month in the summers they have outdoors antique bazaar to augment what you might find (sort of like a multitude of antiques sellers out in the parking lot in ADDITION to the crazy huge assortment of antiques in the store itself!)... and really there's a bit of everything from video games to furniture to clothing to books to jewelry to glassware to toys to records to Canadiana to... If I had any complaints it would be about how hard it might be to find something specific, but then again the odds of just stumbling upon what you're seeking is pretty high! So yes this huge store (formerly a United Cycle location) with storefront decor and great mishmash of antique products to find along with all the kitsch and the crazy is well worth a visit. read more

if you are looking for sports memorabilia, look no further. They have an extensive amount of items from all types of sports. The hockey selection is unbelievable - cards, rings, framed pictures, pennants, pucks, action figures - you name it they have it! Items are priced fairly. Plus if you have any questions, Andre is extremely knowledgable, patient and has the background on every item. It is a gem in Edmonton that is worth the visit. read more

Wow, this place is huge! I must have spent about a good hour here, and that still wasn't enough time to cover the whole place. The Old Strathcona Antique Mall houses hundreds of various vendors, all selling different items like furniture, toys, clothing and shoes, records, and all kinds of knick-knacks. It's a mix of antiques shop and flea market, with all the different stuff they have, and the range of quality offered. They sell antique furniture and offer coffee upstairs, while the smaller items are sold on the main level. There were quite a few people there when I went, everyone seemed to be searching for a bargain. One man was rifling very meticulously through a box of old CD's. Making my way through the mall, I found several items that reminded me of childhood memories. It never occurred to me that certain items my family still has may be vintage or antiques, or that other people had the same items for that matter. Antique shopping is always a mix of treasure-hunting and strolling down memory lane. My favorite items were the vintage English tea cup and saucer sets. I absolutely love these, for some reason. They're so dainty and delicate. But there were so many of them here, they all started to look the same after awhile. I was hoping to find some vintage Christmas ornaments,as I'm getting my own tree this year. But I couldn't find any that were in decent shape; most looked like they had seen better days, and not in a good way either. Still, there is definitely a treasure or few to find for everyone here. You just have to have a lot of time to look through everything, and make sure you're not missing anything good! I should note that they'll be closing this location at the end of December, but will be opening up a bigger one next year, somewhere downtown I think. read more

The Antique Mall can only be summed up by one word: magical! Just don't go an hour before they close, like I did. You'll end up having gone through about 1/4 of the place when all of a sudden it's 6 PM. Furniture, clothing, collectibles, toys, comics, jewelry, home decor....anything and everything. You can even be an electronic magic genie machine for something like $2000. So cool. read more

Whoaaaaa. I think this place must be affected by some sort of bend in the space-time continuum, because when i came in, it was 1:00pm, and after what felt like 20 minutes it was 3:00. Either that or this place is THAT good that you don't realize how much time has passed! They have a huge selection on two floors, and even if a particular booth isn't your cup of tea, it's usually still pretty neat to look at since so many of them are set up with a lot of artistic flair and attention to detail... Some of them reminded me a bit of the demo living room set ups they have at IKEA! The items in the mall ranged from beautiful, unique pieces that will totally wow you, to neat, quirky things you'd gladly pay more for but don't have to, and small things that made you nostalgic for your childhood. And yes, they have taxidermy!! I saw a few birds that were pretty well made, but as my house already looks like a scene from a Hitchcock movie, my resolve not to spend more than 50 bucks wasn't tested until i saw the warthog head mounted on the wall! They have a great selection of records, and i was impressed by how organized they were. Not only categories, but even a 'new this week' bin! I also LOVED how much furniture they had! Half of the top floor is occupied by magnificent 100 year old armoires, elegant couches (all in EXCELLENT condition!) and art nouveau drawers. It wasn't like the 1960s furniture in Gramma's basement, it was the furniture that proudly occupied Great Great Gramma's sitting room! You can also tell that Edmonton has a fur trading, wild west history. Not once in one of my local Vancouver area antique malls have i come across so much stuff that looked like it once belonged to fur traders, gold miners and cowboys! Had i the money, i would have probably gone nuts and redecorated a room in my house in a way that would suggest i was secretly a crazy, gold-panning prospector. I will definitely be back there again next time i am in Edmonton! ... And hopefully i'll have a bigger suitcase that time! read more

Not for the feint of heart, there's almost too much stuff to see here. Claustrophobes had best stick to the large aisles. Not a great place to bring toddlers unless you are prepared to watch them every second, lots of delicates are within reach. Love coming here for general browsing and killing time, lots of fun stuff to play with. The cafe also has great pricing on cookies for the kiddies. I'm a bigger fan of their pastries and loaves, but am occasionally tempted by the crème glacee. That's ice cream, where I'm from. The kid size is just perfect. Keep in mind that each booth is curated by an individual who's renting that area so pricing is subjective and selection is eclectic to say the least. Occasionally you may find the same thing in more than one place with better pricing/condition, but most are pretty on par with each other. Some rarities can be found, you have to look for them. Some non rarities are there too, like those old-timey Kellogg's corn flakes boxes that Dollorama was selling a couple years ago, so you have to know what you're doing before you drop a few bucks on something that just *looks* old. Lay away plans, putting things on hold and other options are available, check with the front cash for info. When in doubt, they can contact the owner of the goods of you have specific questions. Overall the place is good fun! Nostalgics beware, this place will suck you in and steal a whole afternoon from you! read more

This place is definitely one of my favorite spots in Edmonton. My husband and I visited for the first time years ago when we were still living in Texas (it looked a lot different then...), and I still try to get back at least once a month, if not more often. There is so much to see here! Everything from clothes and furniture and books to everything in between. Some of the deals I've scored here include a nice recent model Fossil watch for $28, one of my favorite paperback books of all time ("Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin, Writers Running Wild in the '20s"), and a couple of kitschy necklaces I've gotten compliments on time and again. Start down below, and see the quaintness of the booths, including shabby chic ones, lots of cool old jewelry, and the furniture section in the back. And have an ice cream at the old-fashioned ice cream spot. One of my favorite pieces ever was a white 2-piece pantsuit from the 1960s that hung in the back that was all daisy appliques. Wish I had been a little thinner at the time. I would have bought that sucker in a minute. You could just see Barbara Parkins wearing that on Peyton Place back in the day. When you climb the stairs, you'll instantly meet Zoltar, an old-fashioned fortune telling machine, who introduces himself to you constantly. Upstairs is great if you're into sports memorabilia, action figures, or classic books (when you get up the stairs, turn to the right, and head to the back, where they have comfy chairs for you to browse at your leisure). Plus there are old National Geographics and other magazines near that. I'll mourn if this place ever closes. When I need inspiration for my writing (various historical stories....), I come in here, escape to another age, and let the ideas take form. read more

There is a fine line between antiques and junk, and this place steps all over the line. The good thing is that no one goes looking for antiques to find something quickly and with so much to choose from you are bound to find something interesting. The bad part about this place is although there are tons of vendors, they work together to manage each others stuff. This means no haggling that I saw. read more

I'm a vintage everything junkie, so this is my favorite place to head for some window shopping or even a small treat for myself. It's far too easy to spend hours (and thousands of dollars) in this place, so I try to only look at a specific section each time I go - it's really well laid out in this regard. This isn't a flea market: Each vendor has their own stall which is painstakingly organized. The building itself is incredibly clean and well lit. In addition, the majority of the items available are in good to mint condition, which is terrific. Prices are set by the individual seller, which means it varies wildly between stalls. I've found costume jewelry pieces for $5 at one booth, and seen another where they're selling items for $500+! Each time I go, I wind up finding some incredible gems - especially in the areas of vintage jewelry and clothes . It's a very VERY hard thing to not to buy everything I fall in love with here - and I fall in love with a LOT of it! read more

The Antique Mall is a great place to come and spend some time on an adventure through vintage goods. There's a huge assortment of things for sale, from guns to clothes, animal hides to video games. There's bound to be something that catches your eye. For me, it was the tons of books scattered in little nooks through the store! The place is absolutely crammed with items and in certain spots you need to be careful where you're swinging your arms about, because it's a tight squeeze. Now I've never actually bought anything from here. Like a couple of other reviewers have mentioned, the price seems a bit too high for me to justify buying something. That being said, I'm not a huge antiques buff so I might just not be seeing the value of the items. I've also never seen the Antique Mall packed with people, which is perfect for browsing around. If you're looking for some unique gifts or decorations for around the house, I definitely would recommend stopping by! I'd also recommend coming with a friend or a date and spending some time looking through things together and having a laugh. When I was a kid my parents used to drag my sister and me to antique shops with them and we would always protest profusely. Why would you want to buy something OLD?! Clearly they were just taking us to the wrong stores because the Old Strathcona Antique Mall is now one of my favourite shopping destinations. I could spend hours going through the mall and still come out feeling like I must have missed seeing some kind of hidden treasure. While I had fun reminiscing over the Polly Pocket and My Little Pony toys from my childhood, I was most excited to look at all the vintage accessories. Pretty much every time I shop here I walk out with a one-of-a-kind clutch or pair of shoes. Regardless, I always end up spending hours browsing through the Antique mall like it's some kind of museum. Besides the incredible merchandise, the employees here are always friendly and helpful. They have a knack at knowing when to leave you alone to browse and yet don't hesitate to approach you when you obviously look confused. It is basically impossible for me to resist stopping in the Old Strathcona Antique Mall for a browse whenever I am driving up Gateway from the south. I hope my bank account can forgive me! read more

Great place to find unusual things but don't expect everything to be antique or even vintage, for that matter. Still, if you like to while away the hours, dreaming of the past, you can find a treasure now and then. I have a weakness for pictures and have found a few at this mall. Compared to Rocky Mountain Antique Mall, this one is more brightly lit it and perhaps a bit cleaner, but somehow that takes away a bit of the ambiance. I like the more rustic feel of the other place (Rocky Mountain) better but this mall is OK. If you are visiting Edmonton, you gotta see both places. P.S. I agree with another reviewer that that there is a lot of junk here amidst the good stuff so you have to be patient to sift through it all. read more

I ADORE this place. It's the biggest antique store I've ever been in, it's clean, spacious, and full of treasures. The reason that I gave it four instead of five stars is because I found this AMAZING teapot and one of the girls who works there came up and offered to hold it at the front counter for me. When I went to pay for it, I saw a big chip, and when I asked her about it she was like "Oh, yeah, I dropped it. Sorry." :( However she did seem to feel bad, and we were able to get a little bit of a discount, but still, it's a bit disappointing. If you go there (which I suggest you do), I recommend getting some of the flavored honey sticks on the way out. Yum yum. read more

Buyer beware. I purchased items, then changed my mind less than 24 hrs later. The items purchased had not left the store but I was charged a 30% "restocking" fee!! The mark up on items here is high. You may be better off going to auction, estate sales or garage sales and getting stuff for much cheaper, which is what these guys do anyway, then mark everything way up. You are better off strolling down Whyte Ave. read more

First time visiting the store and I was totally amazed by space everything is pressed into. You need more than an hour to see everything, well almost everything. Quality of antiques were good, the volume is amazing. Not everything is antique, there are some newer items there as well. Everything from furniture to toys. They even have a place to purchase a drink, a treat, and sit when your legs get sore... Great place... Will visit again when I'm back in Edmonton... read more

I love looking at all the old stuff in the antique mall, but the prices are what I would call outrageous for a lot of the stuff. Just because you had something in a box in your basement for 20 years doesn't automatically mean it's worth a fortune now, but it seems that's the mindset of some of the vendors. You can find some reasonably prices items if you look hard enough, but the place is so huge I usually get discouraged after about an hour and give up. I think there are other similar type places that seem a bit more reasonably priced than here. Not much, mind you, but a bit better. read more

This place is crazy! I've never seen so many different varieties of so many different types of items... Miliaria, clothing, furniture, jewelry, etc. You name it, they had it! My only disappointments were that they, as providers of space only, don't know very well what is actually available in all cases, although they did help me find a popple doll for someone! They also don't have as wide a variety of musician/band memorabilia available from their sellers as I was hoping, but they did a very good job of recommending some alternative locations where I might have been able to find the types of items I was specifically looking for! read more

If you're a sucker for old-school toys, they've got My Little Ponies and Sesame Street collectables galore. If you fancy antique jewellery, crowns, tiaras or even hair accessories, they've got 'em. If you're more of an outdoorsy person and you like antique saddles, boots or riding get-up, they've got it. And if you love vintage furniture, you will not be disappointed. The Old Strathcona Antique Mall is the biggest antique mall I have ever been to and you could easily spend hours here. They even serve free coffee so you're not walking around empty-handed. Wow, so many treasures so little time! I went here on the weekend to shop for an vintage kitchen table that would match my new apartment and I was not disappointed! I was pleasantly surprised at the selection of furniture they carried as well as the price points. I thought I would be safe and give myself an hour to peruse the furniture section but against my better judgment I found myself stopping to look into every nook and cranny amazed at how many items I found that were too interesting to not investigate further. Half an hour in I found my self lost in the labyrinth surrounded by china and bridesmaid dresses that I was pretty sure I saw my grandmother wear to her sisters wedding back when ankles were still taboo. After consulting the local minotaur for directions to a drop leaf table I soon was able to navigate my way upstairs to where the real trouble began... the records section. I have never had very strong will power when it comes to LP's so I knew this would be a gauntlet of Indiana Jones proportions. The selection is quite large and many of the prices were quite fair for the condition. I eventually found the table of my dreams but my hopes were dashed as it was on hold for someone to pick up later that day. I noticed that there were quite a few duplicate items in the store so I hope that my tables twin will show up soon so I can take it to a loving home. I really appreciate that the space is so brightly lit and is air conditioned or I probably would have given up my search alot sooner and missed out on what this gem has to offer. read more

This place is huge - two levels of jewellery, toys, records, books, stamps, and just about everything you can think of. I seriously have to go here when I have an entire afternoon to explore. It's bright, clean, and full of different vendors. It's like a flea market but on a higher level. And the cafe sells some of the best ice cream I have ever tasted. read more

One can definitely have tons of fun while going through the tons of different items housed here at the Antique Mall! They have lots of great costume jewelry,housewares,clothes,and toys to browse through and you are more then likely to run into a few things to bring back memories of childhood. Like Alex F. mentioned you have to be careful and browse through the whole building before deciding what to purchase as different vendors often don't price the same for similar items. I saw a My Little Pony I was interested in in three different locations for three different prices which was admittedly a little bit irritating. The staff here seemed nice and looked to be genuinely enjoying their work which always helps to make for a pleasant shopping experience. It would have been nice though to see a few more people wandering the sales floor however as I would have liked to get into one of the costume jewelry cases but the two at the front seemed quite busy and I wasn't really sure if that responsibility even fell on them or if there was another staff member I should have been looking for. I definitely plan to make a return trip when I have more time. I definitely recommend this place to anybody who loves beautiful old things or is questing for a long lost special item from childhood. read more

Like most antique malls this one seems to have a funny smell upon entering but it was quickly unnoticeable. The store is bright clean, spacious and laid out in such a way that someone could easily spend hours here. Unfortunately, my mom and I were on a tight timeline and only browsed a few aisles before having to leave again. One thing that really impressed me though, was the ability to "request an item." You can leave your name and the item you're searching for at the front desk and an email will be sent to all vendors. If someone has the item to sell, you will receive a phone call and can come into the store to see (and purchase, if desired) the requested item. We'll definitely be back next time she's in town...unless of course I wander in sooner by myself! read more

One of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon. I love this place and rarely leave without a couple of items. Of course there are items that are over-priced but there are always jewels tucked away in a different. I like that the staff will ask if they can take your items to the front and enter the items into the computer for a faster checkout. I love their selection of vintage jewelry. Great for a rainy day stroll or vintage troll. You can get lost in here for hours and hours, there is so much to see; clothes, furniture, home decor, artwork, collectables, war memorabilia, jewellery, toys, clothes, records, the lot! Despite being so crammed full of knick-knacks they make it surprisingly easy to get around and even have an old fashioned working elevator to get to the second floor. The furniture collection is out of this world, mind you the prices are too! But where else would you find a magnificent smiling rough collie painting and a magical bride's tiara in the same place? I really enjoy coming to the Antique Mall. Its interesting seeing all of the well preserved vintage items. For some people coming here is like taking a trip down memory lane. A lot of the items I see are new to me so its nice to see what was used and what was in style in previous decades. My favorite part of the Antique Mall is the second level where there are lots of vintage toys from the 1960s to the 1990s like Dawn, Strawberry Shortcake, Jem and Barbie. When you reach the top of the steps to reach the second level, to the left is a glass counter that sells video games and consoles. There is even an old box television set on the counter for people to play Super Mario 3. Overall this is a great store. read more

One of my favorite Edmonton gems. The first time I walked in I was overwhelmed with excitement and joy. I wanted to look at absolutely everything! It's a very large space and it has so many things inside. I find that it's generally priced fairly, especially for antiques. I love to go in and look at the cameras, and some of the furniture is beyond lovely. I can never walk out without buying something (Even if I don't need it at all) It's rarely super busy, and it's easy to find your way around in. The staff are polite and sociable, and if you need help with something always offer their help or advice. Whenever I get the chance I go in and browse around. It's easy to spend a few hours in there and not even realize the time you've just taken. Such a wonderful place, and always has something you didn't expect to find. This place is fantastic! Great way to pass some time This place has sooo much random things I had a blast looking threw it all. Found myself a realllllly nice wool sweater for 36$!!! It's sooo thick and warm I just adore it, I'm gonna have to go back and get another one! What a great price So many memories also! All these items from my childhood it was really a fun time and the prices were very fair Maybe a few things were a little expensive but really can't complain the things I bought I felt I got a steal of a deal! The Old Strathcona Antique Mall is the kind of place you can get lost for hours in; I manage to do so quite frequently. Made up of rows of cubicle-like booths lovingly tended by different antique dealers (or, in some cases, neglected; see New Arrivals signs dated '05!), the Antique Mall is the perfect place to find gifts for absolutely anyone: crazy apartment knick-knacks, old postcards to mail to friends, vintage Pyrex and Fire King kitchenware, record albums, lace gloves, magazine clippings of the Rolling Stones, Star Wars board games and antique furniture from any era. Or, better yet, shop for yourself. It pays to take your time and really browse to your limit; often you can find find an item repeated in another booth at a lower price, and you're guaranteed to overlook things that are really amazing simply because of the mass amount of cool collectibles assaulting your senses.
