It was a…read morestrange surprise when I excitedly went to play a newly purchased RED HOT's vinyl and realized the actual audio of the vinyl itself was mis-pressed with a different genre entirely! Naturally there can't really be any blame, as the label even read exactly as it was supposed to. Bit of a bummer as it was a rare record, in my price range, and I was super stoked to acquire it. In all fairness the staff attempted every available option to solve the issue. Unfortunately, they couldn't give me my money back, but instead store credit, with a small bonus. This kinda sucked as I am broke and didn't get what I was hoping for. I wasn't aware of the store policy of no refunds. However, the staff was super solid to handle the intensity and I am on a list to hopefully get it replaced when a future order comes in, as to benefit my Uplift Mofo Party Plan. I hope to have continued good vibes with this business. They do a great job. In past days I have recommended them extensively and will continue to, especially when someone is looking for something specific. I would slightly hesitate to crown them as the best record store in Edmonton, only because all the record suppliers of this city have different strengths and virtues to their skillset. However, this store is like an air strike of vinyl and the selection available is impressive and formidable. Plus, the staff is as knowledgeable as one can hope for. Long story short, looking forward to eventually getting said record, finger crossed. No bad blood intended, as other times it has been dimes and good luck. Honestly, this is a premier record store, especially if money isn't a huge issue. Literally 98% of your record dreams can come true there! Keep the music alive!! Viva Rock 'n Roll (and) Revolution!

They're frequented by the fedora-wearing music geeks with black-framed glasses, usually seen carrying a leather shoulder bag with a a big flap (presumably to carry their records in.) If you can imagine a universe where Joy Division never broke up, the Chemical Brothers became the new Beatles, and Lisa Loeb is still hot, than you will enjoy Listen Records & CDs. The staff at Listen is awesome. Very nice, personable guys with a lot of patience. My wife went there recently with a long list of items that she was seeking out for me. She said that the dude working the check-out was totally cool and didn't mind looking up every item on the list to see if it was available, and if not, where she could find it. He didn't even exhibit any signs of musical snobbery towards my classic rock and metal leanings. She came home full of raves (and records). If you're into metal or older rock music, Listen won't be your ideal stop, but it's great for people who aren't into mainstream stuff. Listen has a demographic in mind and they who know their target audience is.

The music selection is a great mix of popular "common items you can get at HMV" to deeper cuts of genre's. With my music tastes I can find my things with relative ease. the rock/pop section has a good mix of indie label back catalogue and major releases. the Punk and Metal sections are great dives for fans of these genre's like me. the other sections are similar quality and mix in the different and slightly obscure to really obscure. The local music section is a great inclusion because as a inspiring musician it provides a market place for you're music. I have a few things that could be better 1: the prices: Now I know vinyl is expensive and I like buying things new but It's more of a me problem not a store problem 2: lack of CD and cassette sections: I know the reason most people go is for the vinyl (including me) but I like Cd's for the price and for ease of supply to find at a hmv. I understand it's not a shop for a non-specific market and they have used selection which is a good middle ground. 3: The store is a little to cluttered for my taste the vinyl section has good spacing between sections put the overstock shelf and the back door 7 inch singles is very narrow and the counter is a little to big. Outside of these minor pet peeves I highly enjoy this place, the staff is nice and knows there music. i have purchased 5 vinyls and 2 cassettes from them hears the list Vinyl: Sonic Youth: Goo Black Flag: My War Nirvana: Bleach Tad: Gods Balls Nine Inch Nails: pretty Hate machine Cassette: Death Cab For Cutie: Kintsugi Gender Poutine : My dad sucks

The staff is super helpful and will provide recommendations based on your purchases and questions. Blackbyrd's prices are much better then other stores in Edmonton for the same items (believe me, I comparison shop all the time). If on Whyte and looking for something new to put on your turntable, drop in to Blackbyrd and take a look around - you're bound to find something great.

Not to mention the time I went there on a Sunday and the guy was hung over and disinterested in actually being there. My daughter and I were discussing how there is a snobby air whenever we walk in.. sorry I don't have a man bun, and pronounce things the way he does, excuse me all to heck. If you don't mind feeling like a foreigner, getting corrected on your pronunciation and getting lectured on your taste.. do go here. Just take it with a grain of salt.. he does have a man-bun, so he's allowed to be patronizing and a lil rude.

The reason for my high rating is that I went to find a few limited vinyl and I wasn't sure where to look. I approached one of the staff and he was helpful to direct me to exactly the records I was looking for. The one they didn't have, they took down my number and then called me a few days later to let me know they were in and they were putting it on hold for me. I went in a day later and the sales associate had it readily available. Even though the prices were higher, they did have a flyer with coupons and I was able to save about $30 off so that was great. Definitely impressed with the good service I had!

When it was announced that Sunrise Records would be taking over many of HMV's old locations I was…read morewondering how Sunrise would be able to make a go of things if a big company like HMV couldn't. Well, if Sunrise continues to charge the prices they are now, they'll be out of business soon too. All this stock is much cheaper on Amazon. To give you an idea of the price differential, The Beatles 1967-1970 BLUE 2LP set is $79.99 at Sunrise. It's $32.99 on Amazon. And, yes, I mean the Canadian Amazon. Sunrise have a deal now where if you buy a T-Shirt you get $5 off a record. So if you buy 9 T-Shirts the price will be on par with Amazon for this Beatles record. As their names indicates, they specialize in vinyl and they have a lot of it. They've even got a small stock of 7 inch records, some of which are Record Store Day titles. Actually, some of their LPs are RSD titles too. (None of the cool ones though.) They have a large stock of CDs as well. Not as many as HMV did. The CDs cost a lot of money too. They have some at discounted prices such as 2 for $10 or 2 for $20 but those seem to be few and far between. For the most part, the CDs average between $15 - $25. There is a section at the front of the store for discounted CDs starting at $6. Their second floor is filled with DVDs and Blu-Rays. Both of those formats are breathing their last breath right now as Netflix continues to twist the knife in their hearts. Blu-Rays are around $7.99-ish. Unless it's Avengers part 6 or Return of the Son of Batman's Daughter or something like that then you're looking at around $30. This store has a large stock of board games which judging from their recent press release seems to be what they're counting on to set them apart from other big box retailers and keep them in business. ??? They cost from $30 - $90. Ish. Sunrise reminds me a bit of Urban Outfitters and not just because they're both radically overpriced. Sunrise also have those cheap, gaudy portable record players which sound like flies in a tin can that they sell to hipsters for $150. Crazy. The staff are friendly and greet you at the front door - Wal-Mart style. They don't stick your bags with happy faces though.
