Blackbyrd continues to be the best recordstore in Edmonton. They always have the new releases in on release day, and their used selection always allows for some time spent hunting for treasures. The staff is super helpful and will provide recommendations based on your purchases and questions. Blackbyrd's prices are much better then other stores in Edmonton for the same items (believe me, I comparison shop all the time). Whenever I go to this store, yes there is a variety of music in all genres.. lots of great prices.. my only complaint is the man-bun wearing staff member that served me made and me feel like I shouldn't be in the store, by correcting me on my pronunciation of a band name and over educating me on my "lifestyle" music.. Not to mention the time I went there on a Sunday and the guy was hung over and disinterested in actually being there. My daughter and I were discussing how there is a snobby air whenever we walk in.. sorry I don't have a man bun, and pronounce things the way he does, excuse me all to heck. If you don't mind feeling like a foreigner, getting corrected on your pronunciation and getting lectured on your taste.. do go here. Blackbyrd is a favourite haunt for music lovers. You can find a lot of titles you can't find elsewhere, as well as extensive selections in genres not readily available in chain CD shops. I appreciate the World Music and Alternative sections. CDs are both new and used, and you can sell or trade your unwanted music here too. Collectors will be thrilled with the vinyl selection, and Blackbyrd is an avid supporter of independent recording artists. The place is relatively small and can get cramped when it is busy, but this is definitely a place for anyone who love music that strays from the mainstream. read more

This is an independent music store on Whyte Ave. I'll admit it's been a while since I bought a CD (I don't have vinyl), but I was in the area and decided to stop in - mostly because I've been listening to a lot of Kate Bush recently and I wanted to see what albums of hers they had. They did have a few CDs and I think I even saw The Hounds of Love on vinyl. I picked up her 1989 album The Sensual World for $10.99 (I think). In any case it was cheaper than what it would have cost if I had downloaded the album from a certain fruit logo technology company - score for the independent music stores over the big guys. There seems to be a good selection of music here from a variety of different genres. The stores is pretty small, and on a Saturday afternoon it was quite crowded. The staff seemed alright, but I didn't ask any questions. I just bought my music and picked up a free music button. Another win for Blackbyrd. read more

I really like Blackbyrd, and I always have. Vinyl is reasonably priced, and I'm a fan of the selection. On one occasion, I wanted to purchase two records that they did not have, and the woman working there had no problem ordering it for me. The staff aren't particularly chatty, but I don't have a problem asking them for help when I need help. They can give me what I need when I go in there, and I don't expect anything more. Whenever I need a record, I always call or drop in to Blackbyrd to see if they have what I'm looking for, and 90% of the time they do. Also, I love that they sell tickets. Super convenient. Another shoebox-shaped indie record store. Everytime I've visited Blackbyrd it's always been on a low-key Saturday afternoon. I can't imagine what this place must be like when it's busy because it is so cramped and narrow. Blackbyrd is similar to Listen Records & CDs in that they sell a lot of "indie" music. When I was there today they were playing some shoegazer, doom-and-gloom type stuff. I don't know what it was but it's probably taking the airwaves by storm over on CJSR FM88. The Record Store Sub-culture is alive and well at Blackbyrd. Probably. Previous reviewers have mentioned that Blackbyrd's staff aren't very chatty. It's true, they don't seem that outgoing but I don't find that an issue. I'm not going there to socialize. Who cares? They have a larger selection of rock music than Listen does, which is cool. They also sell concert tickets for bands that you've never heard of. They have a white-board in the store to let you know what shows they sell tickets for but it's really high up on the wall and it looks like it's written in Arabic so you'll have to ask them anyway. I like that they keep in touch with their customers through Twitter and Facebook to let us know what has just arrived. They even post photos sometimes of their new stock before they put it on the shelves. It's kind of a hipster store. Record fans that like their rock & roll will know what I mean. My only real gripe about this place is the new release rack that they have by the front door. I was there mid-afternoon when the sun was beating through the front window and on to all of the records on this rack. I was eyeing the Stooges picture disc that they had but I opted not to buy it because I'm not interested in suntanned records. Don't Blackbyrd's staff know that heat is vinyl's worst enemy? This is a really great spot for getting your music that would not be found at a chain music store. I love that they have old and new records for sale, of all different variety! They offer a fair amount of local bands too, which is great to see! Downside: the staff made me pretty uncomforatble, as they did not talk to me the entire time, and only did the standard "did you find everything you were looking for?" when I put my items on the counter and said I was ready to be checked out. read more

New and used Vinyl and CDs ( i even saw some cassettes last time i was in there) Its pretty great that they have such a good selection. There is quite a range of hard to find and rare music. I think it helps that the staff all seem to be " music nerds" as well :D All in all. If they don't have what you want.. they can probably order it. read more

I wanted to save money on purchasing some tickets for an upcoming show. Instead of buying online, I headed over to Blackbyrd. It's a long, slim music store, with a good selection of newer, harder-to-find records, plus a well curated, reasonably priced used section. Upon purchasing my tickets, the guy at the counter seemed a little peeved - Blackbyrd doesn't make much from ticket sales. But this guy probably would have looked peeved even before piracy/MP3s killed most record stores. But since it's Christmas time and I was looking for a gift to buy, I decided to actually buy a CD from them, despite a high price. And the (different) guy at the counter was pleased to help me. read more

CD's are hard to come by these days.. When I say CD's I mean the rare CD's from indie labels or the classics. Blackbyrd Myoozik doesn't carry the pop music that you will find at HMV and that's what I like about it. In addition to CD's they also carry vinyl records which are hard to come by anywhere. Many of the CD's are used but they are in great condition. If you are looking for something specific and can't find it anywhere you might have some luck here. read more

Just dusted off the old turntable and looking for some new vinyl to spin, this is the best place to find old and new bands. Very good selection of new releases at resonable prices, and you can even find a real good selection of old bands releasing on vinyl. I havn't used there ticket service yet but will definetly be checking it out. read more

an excellent shop in appearance, and fantastic stock to boot! Though after today I will not be returning. I had stopped in with a friend and was unpleasantly surprised by the treatment I received. Though originally I entered sheerly to accompany my friend, it quickly popped into my head that the store might carry a reprint or used copy of a LP that my father once owned, and as his birthday was quickly approaching, I jumped at the chance to ask if the store might be able to help. I had momentarily forgotten the artist of the classic LP (Warrant) the employee on staff quickly informed me that I should know what I was looking for, should've gone on Discogs first, and should check other shops, all without looking up from his computer. I was immediately offended, I calmly thanked him and stated "It was worth checking if I could get it locally" to which he replied, after almost cartoonishly making an audible noise of contempt, "What do you mean it was worth trying?" I immediately walked out rather than start an argument. Upon returning home and reading further reviews and talking to other friends. I discovered the same employee had personally run off friends who spend upwards of $500 dollars a month on records, and to boot had harassed a young girl and her mother. I run businesses, and never ever would an employee behave that way, it is easily the most appalling retail experience I've ever had. I don't give a damn who the employee is, or how long they've been with the company, behaving like that once, let alone repeatedly and regularly, is more than grounds for dismissal. read more

This is one of the only places I purchase my records, mostly because it's local, and it has a huge selection of obscure and popular stuff. The prices are definitely reasonable. The staff knows a lot about all kinds of music, and are very helpful. This is the best independent music store I have ever been in, and I shop it religiously. read more

The only thing preventing me from giving Blackbyrd five stars is the staff. They have good selection, and good prices. I have been shopping there for twenty years now, and it is with a heavy heart that I have to say that I only still shop there because they are an independent music store. The staff are unfriendly, and rarely say anything to me other than the price of my purchase. I didn't even get eye contact from either of the two at the till today, and the third was eating some smelly stuff by the till. I know I'm there for music, but its retail, people: let's try some customer service. If there was another independent store in my neighborhood with the same selection, and an ounce more friendliness, guaranteed, I would drop Blackbyrd like a bad habit. read more

I don't pop into Blackbyrd nearly as often as I'd like. As one of the city's best record shops, they're a top location for buying show tickets and stock a good selection of music of all genres. And although I haven't sold anything to them in a few years, Blackbyrd always paid really well for used CDs, far better than the Wee Book Inn down the street. As a fairly serious record shopper, I appreciate that they've got a decent selection of vinyl here but find it can be fairly expensive and also notice that they don't necessarily check used records coming in for condition. It's always nice when you can simply trust that an album is in good shape but at Blackbyrd I would definitely recommend taking the time to check for scratches as I've been disappointed more than once. I'm also not too fond of their habit of mixing new and used records together, and it'd be nice if they carried a larger selection of 7" singles. But when it comes down to it, they do get in some pretty rad stuff - in fact, writing this, I'm dying to run down there this afternoon for the Milk 'n Cookies reissue I spied a few weeks back. read more

Although I love my ipod, and I am a sucker for downloading music off itunes, I still love CDs and am adamant about supporting my favourite bands. Blackbyrd Myoozik is where I go to find a lot of indie music that I like, and I can't leave here without at least purchasing one CD. The store is fairly small, but Blackbyrd is about quality, not quantity. You won't find a bunch of MC Hammer, Tiffany, or other forgotten artists. Instead, you'll find a lot of timeless music, and there's a large focus on the indie music scene. You'll find everything from punk, dance, techno, electro, alternative, blues, and more. Many of the CDs are used, but they are good quality and at reasonable prices. Blackbyrd also carries new and used vinyl, which I find really cool, because I really don't want vinyl to ever die. I've also sold some of my CDs here and got a fairly good price for them. read more

I absolutely love vinyl! I was introduced to it within the last few years, and I can't believe the sound. It's so velvety, and you can hear more "truth behind the music". Blackbyrd offers new and old music, and everything in between. They will even find you an album that you may have had trouble finding yourself. The staff are super helpful when you ask questions. I used to shop this location regularly with their great selection and reasonable pricing. Record Store Day is always a fruitful event, with great deals. Unfortunately, their service leaves much to be desired, which leaves me to believe their management probably doesn't provide much coaching or encouragement. I like the casual environment, but I shouldn't have to wait until the clerk is done texting before I can fork over my money. I was a little let down when I dropped over 300 dollars at Christmas, and couldn't even get a smile or some eye contact... I wasn't expecting anything 'extra' but it is hard to feel good about a large purchase when the staff don't seem to appreciate the business. I've since been shopping elsewhere when I can, and will return for the odd album I can't find elsewhere. read more

I use to be an avid vinyl purchaser but I've since sold it all. This was thee place though that I would buy nearly all my vinyl jazz. The prices were great and I found a lot of albums I wouldn't find at any HMV. Great electronic selection too. My only gripe is that the store is a little small so don't go during a busy warm summer weekend day if you can. read more

Hi ... On the upside: Pretty good vinyl record and CD selection and a nice turnover of used CDs. On the downside: Some of their vinyl releases are extremely over-priced. The owner is friendly and very knowledgeable, but most of the staff tend to be cold and even rude to customers. read more

Service was... lacking. I didn't get any help except for when I was apparently looking at sections of albums that weren't for sale? Not to mention how abruptly the person working was trying to shut the shop down that day. I agree that when it's a few minutes to closing time, it's worth making sure everyone in the shop is aware of that, but a calm and professional attitude should still be able to be maintained when doing so (this was not directed at me but at others that I observed). I didn't even find the selection to be that wonderful. I might be back at some point in the future, but I definitely won't be going out of my way to do so. read more
