I've spent SO MANY hours here whether it be eating or exploring shops, walking to or from classes, or simply socializing with others on campus throughout my degrees and because I've had other events on campus to visit. And while it's an odd space since it is a mall and a residence all rolled into one, it has some great food options and some great people working there as well as providing services to the folks who visit campus or call it home. Recently a video game was made focusing on the problems inherent with people not knowing the unwritten rules of walking down HUB mall (namely that ones should walk down the right side of the mall as traffic can get insane, especially during the school semester in between classes). It looks sorta cool and they have a lot of food vendors that are awesome, but all the corners look like they haven't been cleaned in years and the main mall gets super-crowded sometimes which sucks if you like personal space. The Hub Mall is such a brilliant invention. Unlike any student space in Canada, it incorporates student residences and a mall in one building which you'd never even have to leave while surviving through exam period or other stressful times during your studies. There are at least 20 food kiosks in the mall, offering a variety of options - Chinese, Korean, Thai, American fast food, Grandma's comfort food, smoothies and wraps, Japanese and sandwiches. You can get your hair cut here, get new eyeglasses or have a vision test, get a massage, book a trip abroad or exchange, shop for dorm room decor, study, go tanning, do your banking, meet with an accountant or seek therapy. I think you only thing you can't do here is drink, but there are plenty of places within walking distance of The Hub, like Hudson's on Campus and Earl's. The Hub rocks. Every university should follow suit. read more

Hub Mall was probably my main hangout when I was at the university. It's by the LRT station and bus terminal, and I always passed through on my way to classes. It has more to offer than the Students Union Building too, with all the different kinds of cuisines and student services they have. Here's a list of what you can do here: -your stinking laundry (cause your momma ain't around) -get your shoes repaired -your banking -book a vacation (if the previous option was positive) -grab some breakfast, lunch, or late night snack (and get fat on Cookies by George) -buy a last minute birthday card -buy a new pair of eyeglasses -cram for that exam you've been in denial about -get a cheap haircut (but see my review for the Hot Razor before you really do) It's a really convenient place, whether you're a student or just passing through. It can get crazy busy around afternoon hours though, with high traffic on both sides of the long corridor. Do not, I repeat DO NOT stop in the middle of the traffic, as you will have a bunch of angry students with heavy textbooks piled up behind you. Simply move to the side, and do not look back until safe to do so. Also, it gets crazy hot in the summer because they have crappy air circulation. In fact, I don't believe they have AC ... so it gets pretty stuffy. That's when the frozen yogurt and ice cream they sell come in handy! read more

Wow, what I cool building!! I haven't spent a lot of time on campus at the University of Alberta so I'm sure there a lot more "note-worthy" places, but I thought this was pretty neat. Good selection of food and vendors - I ate here for 3 days while I was in the area on a course, and it was great to be able to eat at 3 different restaurants. Fingers crossed for another course in the area so I have an "excuse" to be back. Pro tip: make sure if you do go, it's during the "normal class times". Trust me, you know when a class or 2 is let out - don't get lost in the mix!! read more

HUB Mall is the place to fulfill your student needs and it is the most unique part of the University of Alberta. It is filled with a variety of places to eat, places to get school supplies, a tanning salon, laundromat, travel agency, hair salons etc. It also has a bunch of upstairs "lounges" where you can eat and study. It is probably the busiest part of the U of A at lunch because of all the eatery's it has to choose from. it also has a bunch of dorms upstairs with windows that open into the mall which looks pretty neat. You can always see people's windows decorated.. usually with pop cans or beer cans. I never feel like I am at a school when I'm walking through HUB because of the way it's set up. It is unlike any other building I have seen. read more

I really like HUB Mall. I have always wished that I attended University just so I could live in the dorms upstairs and start my own pattern of pop cans in the windows. I usually come to HUB Mall, when I need to kill time or if I've just got off the LRT and realize I need to hit the bank machine, the washroom, or need something to eat. I used to come here a lot to study too. There are quite a few study areas that usually keep changing, but they are always there. I rarely go into any of the stores here, except for Varsity Health & Beauty and one store that has a lot of posters. There's a good variety of food choices here from healthy to downright unhealthy. HUB has the usual fast food chains like A & W, Edo, and Subway, but there's also many independent places like Ho Ho Chinese Food and Motherly that sells delicious samosas, soups, and baked goods. HUB Mall is very narrow and long. Sometimes I get very confused as to what side of the mall I am on. I have walked all the way to the wrong end on many occasions. It's a long walk to trek back, but the exercise is good, I suppose. read more

The Hub's got the best fast food options at the University. While I seriously dislike the idea of walking down a mall with residents' windows opening inward towards the mall, I can ignore it because I don't stay at this place. Like any other mall, they have a lot of services here. I get my taxes done here, passport/visa photos taken, shop for my last minute stationery needs, get my coffee and as always, drop in for lunch every now and then. They also have hair salons, bookshops and other things. It's a compact space that seems to fit a lot of different services in. While I'm not sure if I have a favorite food joint here, I'd probably cycle between Edo, the Korean place, the Chinese place, the falafel shop, New York Fries, Cookies by George and A&W burgers, while I'm here. Again, I'm sure I'm missing out on some crucial ones... but that's the deal - they have so many options! Best of all - most of the places accept Interact and credit cards. None of those places are individually worth rating more than 3 stars but given the mundane choices that other places at the U have, I would come to the HUB for a meal over any of those other options. The first time I went to the Hub was about 4 years ago when I was crashing at my sister's place at the University of Alberta. I paid the Hub another visit yesterday while I happened to be on campus. Boy, I remember this place looking a lot better back then. Now it kind of looks like it's stuck in the 90's. I didn't get a chance to see the student apartments but to me, this place could use a renovation. The restaurants are okay...some a great, some aren't so great. Cookies by George is certainly a highlight. But I think the idea of the Hub is cool: having apartments in the same building as one of the most active place on campus. I wish my school had done something like that. read more

Hub Mall the mall where you walk through and the aroma and haze of weed can been seen blowing from the windows. When I went to the U of A they had the best Arcade games for a quarter then we started playing alot and it went up to a buck...bloop bloop bloop (sound of losing in a game) game over with that. The food variety here is good but being on campus prices are a little higher. Hub Mall contained one of my secret bathrooms too, you know, hardly used no one even knows its there. The best one is....well I cant say but I bet its still hardly used. The Lrt and other buildings are attached to the hub..acting like a HUB??? WHAT..... so you can eliminate walking in the cold, overall I like HUB good place to chill and meet people. read more

If you're staying at hub, there's some thing to remember: -if you're claustrophobic or hate lack of space in your room, avoid the 4 person house at all cost -if you can arrange 4 best friends to stay in the house, you CAN and you should since.. -if you got a dirty roomate or simply doesn't care about clealiness, get out ASAP as HUB frequently make clean check and they LOVE to charge you 30-50$ per cleaning. -the walls between the rooms are thin as tissue paper(yes exaggeration), but once you feel it you'll believe me. You can talk on your handphone and your roomate can perfectly make out your words -the rates are going up, it just does Did I mention the room is small? If you have a storage room in your parent's house, it's about the same size. read more

Hub Mall is the main shopping and services area at the University of Alberta. It connects buildings from two major faculties (Humanities and Fine Arts), and is lined with retailers selling mostly food and convenience items. There is a laundromat and a hairstylist, a few places to study, a book store, an art gallery and shop, and a shoe repair place. Not all of the stores are open on weekends and holidays, or during times when classes are not in session. Also, good luck trying to find a table during lunch time. When classes let out, there will be a sea of activity on either side of you, as you try to sit and eat, so I recommend you get your food to go and head elsewhere. Some of the food places you can find pretty much anywhere, like Taco Time, A&W (the first and used to be the only chain store in the whole place), New York Fries, and Edo Japan, but also some independent places like a Korean restaurant, and the legendary Academy Pizza. read more

Hub mall, the place that feeds my coffee addiction on a regular basis and keeps me warm in the winter when I am coming from the train and headed to the business building. Other than Cookies by George and perhaps Beez I'm really not a fan of Hub. I don't like fast food, and I really don't like the smell of fast food at 8am. Hub is swarming with people at lunch time who are all trying to get their fill of Ho ho, subway or A&W which makes it very undesirable to walk through when you are trying to get to class. There are lots of places to sit and et or have a coffee with a friend but other than that it's like the two star Yelp description says "meh, I've experienced better." read more

I would give this place 0 if I could. I have lived in hub mall for a while during schooling and it is so unbelievably dirty. Sure the restaurants downstairs offer a good selection of food but I know alot of people who live in hub dont eat in hub. Im saying this because in almost all of the suites upstairs, there are ants and mice. Pest control come once every two weeks upon request, but even still, there are legit ants crawling everywhere in the rooms. I moved out because there were two mice running around the suite and at night you can hear mice crawling in the pipes...as well the ant problems got so bad they would be in your dish cupboards and often in bed as well. I have friends who work part time in those restaurants downstairs and they have said many restaurants have pest problems. They often see ants crawling on the floor and food counters in the back. they also have mouse traps in every corner of the room. I am not trying to say that hub isnt a good place to hang out but im just giving my advice on why it might not be the cleanest place to eat. read more

For many students this narrow mall with its restaurants and integrated dorms is a home away from home. I used to spend many hours here during breaks between classes. This place is really convenient as students can eat, study, sleep, do their laundry and visit a salon here. The food kiosks offer everything from burgers and fries to Chinese and Japanese food. Kitchen workers seem to take into the consideration the fact that you might be late for a class, and prepare food very fast. The eating tables are located right in the middle of HUB's main hallway, and considering that HUB is one of the busiest places on campus, don't expect any peace and quiet as you eat or study. But that's the charm of HUB - it's buzzing with students on the run. If you want to study without being distracted and interrupted, come here in the evening when classes are over. You won't be able to get any food as all kiosks will be closed, but you'll be able to study in silence. read more
