Came here cause we're tourists and had just about the best time we could have had. I got the schnitzel and the wife got the fondue. The fondue for one is more like fondue for everyone. Unfortunately I can't eat cheese so my poor wife ate a lot of cheese and then fell asleep at 8pm. what are you gonna do. The staff here were so friendly, one point is that you need to specifically tell them to give you your check, or it'll take a minute. Didn't know that so we kind of just lingered a bit after we said we were done. Favorite meal in the area.

Really very good! We pitched up at 8pm with no reservation, & the very friendly hostess accommodated us immediately. Lovely traditional Stube, which was super warm & cosy. Our waitress was very sweet & friendly, & very accommodating! We shared the bigger charcuterie plate, & shared a fondue. Delicious, & very filling! We had the Herda white wine, which was crisp & light. Excellent meal & experience, & highly recommend!

Recommended by guidebooks and locals alike as the best place for fondue in Zermatt, Whymper-Stube perhaps only disappoints due to American misconceptions about what traditional fondue is (e.g., apparently and perhaps unfortunately, chocolate dessert fondue ain't the real thing, folks). Whymper-Stube is named for the first person to summit the Matterhorn. It is adjoined to the hotel from which Monsieur Whymper set out on his successful venture. The restaurant is a cozy nook consisting of two small rooms so reservations are definitely required. There are seatings at 18:30 and 20:30, and getting a reservation on the day of is fairly easy though you might not get the slot you want. Also, the restaurant is fairly flexible, allowing you to arrive close to 19:00 if you have the 18:30 seating, which allows you to begin and finish within an hour and a half without any feeling of rush. The cheese fondue is the only fondue available for one person. It comes with bread and potatoes. You can get additions such as mushrooms and pears for a small additional charge. Also, the dried meat carpaccio appetizer pairs well and provides a more well-rounded meal. The pork cordon bleu is awesome, but the fries that accompany it are not good at all. I would recommend just asking for vegetables instead, and your request will be happily accommodated. The servers are quite busy and occasionally must be hailed down. The prosecco, at 8 CHF a pop, was quite good for the price. There is one and only one beer ("Cardinal"). It is pilsener style and good. The raclette looked and smelled delicious but after eating an entire bowl of cheese fondue myself (our waitress was impressed), even after a day of skiing, I could eat no more! Reservations are required. Expect dinner for two to run in the 100 CHF range before tip. I originally wrote this review in January 2012 and returned to the restaurant in January 2013 and had an identical and equally satisfying experience.

The staff at the restaurant was incredible! There were people of all different backgrounds in the restaurant, and the waitress made an effort to speak to everyone a little bit in their language. Hello, goodbye, thank you... Things like that. It was really special. I would've definitely given a higher review if I didn't order something fried. My dish was fried and it came with french fries. Just too much fried food on the plate for me, my mistake! (schnitzel with French fries). And then my husband got apple strudel.

Whymper-Stube interior--many varieties of fondue along with many Swiss dishes. The food is excellent, device is great.

Wonderful and amazing fondue in a homey and intimate atmosphere. Suggest reservations (I would say the are required), as this restaurant fills up fast in the evening. We also enjoyed the raciette, which completely satisfied our appetites. English-only speakers are not a problem. Don't forget the apple strudel. Enjoy!

This while sitting below a photo of the black nosed Zermatt sheep. Wife had the lamb that was superb. This is a quintessential Zermatt experience. Top notch.

We are a group of 9 and we wanted to dine at Restaurant Schäferstube after seeing a lot of good…read morereviews and recommendations from other people but Restaurant Schäferstube is full. I accidentally found Restaurant Julen, which is a sister restaurant of Restaurant Schäferstube, and in fact, it is in the same location but on the upper level of Restaurant Schäferstube. The most important thing is you can order the signature items of Restaurant Schäferstube from the menu of Restaurant Julen!!! So we decided to give it a try and I am so glad that we did! They don't accept reservations of more than 6 online, so I had to send an email to confirm and requested a window seat. I really like the atmosphere and the decorations of Restaurant Julen. Majority of us ordered the 'Grilled rack of lamb roasted pink on our wood grill' 2 courses from the SCHÄFERSTÜBLI GRILL. The lamb is soooooooo tender! I highly recommend this if you eat lamb, the lamb is special and unique in this region! Everyone was so happy with the food and service. We had a very good time there although we cannot stay late because we need to get up early to ski. If you cannot make a reservation at Restaurant Schäferstube, come here. If you just want to have the grilled lamb from Restaurant Schäferstube and don't mind where to go, come to Restaurant Julen, the sitting is so comfortable!
