We heard great things about this restaurant during our trip to Zermatt in 2024. Unfortunately, we did not make a reservation in time and were unable to try. During our next trip to Zermatt last week (May 2026), we were able to get a reservation and finally try the food. The interior is sunk down and very comfortable but compact. Great ambiance that makes you feel like you're somewhere local, not a chain restaurant. It did get fairly warm inside and could use an open window. Definitely somewhere you'd want to be in the winter. The service from our waitress was very good and she was friendly, ensuring we understood what we were ordering. 2 of us did the fondue and the other did a steak dish. The fondue was very good, the best we had on our Switzerland trip. The meat was not fatty thankfully and it was flavorful. Great portion too. The side sauces were also very good, along with the French fries and rice. The broth for the fondue, not cheese, was flavorful. All in all, no one left hungry. It was a great visit for dinner and a chance to learn more about the history of the restaurant. We learned the gentleman pictured below was the first in a group to make the Trek to the top of the Matterhorn from this hotel. Very impressive considering the gear they had. * Swiss local said the Swiss drink white wine or hot tea with fondue so the cheese doesn't coagulate and you feel yuck in your tummy. But I didn't feel like either and had water. I was fine but just a tip for ya! Lols I got cozy basement Swiss vibes here. We were seated right away on a weekday afternoon for lunch. Place was full and it's not a big restaurant so must be a popular spot. Zermatt is quite the happening spot! Ordered the fondue and the hubs and I were fine with the serving for one person so the pot was only halfway full. But if you and your other half are super hungry, better get two orders. This fondue had a white wine taste to it, which was good even though I preferred the garlic fondue I had in Lucerne. The brat and fries were delish! * Tipping is not mandatory in Switzerland. Of course if your server went above and beyond for you, feel free to round up on the check and I'm sure they would appreciate it. But I think the Swiss servers know we tip in America so when it was time to pay our bill, our waitress said "oh and if you would like to leave a tip, you can do so right here." The food and service were great. Upscale restaurant with only a few tables. I would recommend making a reservation, but we were lucky enough to stroll in at around 4:30pm and able to be seated. People after us were turned away without a reservation. The beef fillet with herb butter was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing, as well as the sides. Best meal we had in Zermatt. Every table around us had cheese fondue, so I assume this is definitely the place to try it, but unfortunately we did not order. read more

We wanted to love this place because the reviews were so great. Mom and brother ordered the schnitzel and unfortunately both were burnt on the bottom and very dry. The service staff looked a bit overwhelmed so we didn't want to say anything but they were nice! My dad and I ordered the veal and beef with broth fondue thinking it would be something else but that's on us. We don't know how authentic that dish is but it was just not to our liking due to how flavorless everything was besides the sauce. Fries were unflavored as well which might just be a Swiss thing. I'll be truthful. This place was great. There was absolutely nothing to complain about. All of the food was excellent. The kid's menu chicken breast was perfection crisped and served with lemon and fries. Condiments upon request. The pork steak was okay and nothing really to write home about. Most of our party ordered the bratwurst, which was great. It was large and tasty and served with good sides and great mustard. One of the staff accommodated for our group and swapped rice pilaf for fries. Speaking of staff, they were friendly and overall amazing. We also got the fondue which was intensely cheesy. Beer cheese! Mmm! It was served with soft, cubed bread and boiled potatoes. If you love spuds, it may help to ask for more, we only received three. Came here cause we're tourists and had just about the best time we could have had. I got the schnitzel and the wife got the fondue. The fondue for one is more like fondue for everyone. Unfortunately I can't eat cheese so my poor wife ate a lot of cheese and then fell asleep at 8pm. what are you gonna do. The staff here were so friendly, one point is that you need to specifically tell them to give you your check, or it'll take a minute. Recommended by guidebooks and locals alike as the best place for fondue in Zermatt, Whymper-Stube perhaps only disappoints due to American misconceptions about what traditional fondue is (e.g., apparently and perhaps unfortunately, chocolate dessert fondue ain't the real thing, folks). Whymper-Stube is named for the first person to summit the Matterhorn. It is adjoined to the hotel from which Monsieur Whymper set out on his successful venture. The restaurant is a cozy nook consisting of two small rooms so reservations are definitely required. There are seatings at 18:30 and 20:30, and getting a reservation on the day of is fairly easy though you might not get the slot you want. Also, the restaurant is fairly flexible, allowing you to arrive close to 19:00 if you have the 18:30 seating, which allows you to begin and finish within an hour and a half without any feeling of rush. The cheese fondue is the only fondue available for one person. It comes with bread and potatoes. You can get additions such as mushrooms and pears for a small additional charge. Also, the dried meat carpaccio appetizer pairs well and provides a more well-rounded meal. The pork cordon bleu is awesome, but the fries that accompany it are not good at all. I would recommend just asking for vegetables instead, and your request will be happily accommodated. The servers are quite busy and occasionally must be hailed down. The prosecco, at 8 CHF a pop, was quite good for the price. There is one and only one beer ("Cardinal"). It is pilsener style and good. The raclette looked and smelled delicious but after eating an entire bowl of cheese fondue myself (our waitress was impressed), even after a day of skiing, I could eat no more! Reservations are required. Expect dinner for two to run in the 100 CHF range before tip. This place was recommended by our hotel concierge as being the best Swiss Cuisine in the city. Especially if you want to get fondue. So we went for it on a Thursday night. We had to make a reservation, which was a first for Zermatt. The place was packed at 8 pm. No open tables. Menu was confusing and the waitress was little help. Three women are running the place and are sprinting Around with boiling pots of cheese and broth. Beware, the prices are per person. Usually around 40 franks per person. The food itself was great. They give you a bunch of fresh veggies and sides to go with your meat. Four dipping sauces to choose from. It's a great experience, just a tad pricey. read more

The staff at this restaurant was incredibly rude. I tired to order several items and the waitress told me no because it was "too much" for the amount of people at the table. When I adjusted the order to be less she then said no that's not enough and handed me a laminated piece of paper saying that each diner is required to place a minimum order. It was frustrating to feel like I couldn't place the order I wanted to place and then to be criticized for placing the order I felt cornered into. Wonderful dinner in Zermatt. We had the meat fondue, cooking the meat in oil at your table, and enjoyed a half portion of the meringue with ice cream for dessert- I recommend the half portion.. it was still plenty for 2 people to share!
