    Loch Fyne - Lobster spaghetti.

I just visited Loch Fyne for the first time with a group of out-of-town colleagues who had all been…read morethere multiple times before (ironic given that I'm the only UK-based one!). The Reading location is pleasantly situated along the canal and has a warm, cosy feel to it. Although I wasn't able to sample most of the menu given my shellfish issues, the menu has a lot to offer for seafood die-hards. I ordered the poached smoked haddock with spinach, peas and mash in a grain mustard sauce. I wouldn't order it again, but that has more to do with me than the dish - I often find myself gravitating to a dish based on the sides rather than the main attraction. That strategy pays off a majority of the time, but even though I keep thinking I'll develop a taste for smoked fish, that penchant has yet to transpire. That said, my colleague who ordered the same dish loved it. And the spinach and grain mustard sauce were yummy (although I would have liked more of it)! Loch Fyne is a good option for chain restaurant-laden Reading. I wouldn't mind going back.

Asked for take-away and was told that there was only 1 option - fish and chips. I have to say, it…read morewas a good set of fish and chips but nothing astronomical. The battered haddock was decently fried but nothing special and the chips were... well chips. I was less than satisfied with the mashed peas. However, the reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the service while I was at Loch Fyne was fantastic. All of the staff were very courteous and the ambiance felt great. Next time, I will have a sit-down meal instead.

Good spicy Indian food in the evenings, they apparently have cafe offerings in the morning. I was…read morevery pleased with the service, as I simply asked him to bring me whatever was particularly good that evening. (I was too tired for the menu.) "How spicy? And is chicken okay?" A few minutes later, thin crunchy poppadoms with condiments including a sweet chutney, something with pieces of pepper, a chopped onion/tomato mix and an unidentifiable sauce that had a good kick. This was followed by a fresh hot vegetable samosa that needed a few minutes to cool down. When I had finished, I was asked if I was ready for the main. I like that. Instead of simply bringing it, was I ready? Nice touch. The "house" chicken curry had a good zing to it. More hot than medium, I was glad I had something to take the edge off it. Still, I ate all of it with a good bit of the pilau rice. An excellent meal and it was a good value. I would return!

I have never noticed this restaurant before as it's below a sandwich shop. Came here on a Groupon…read morediscount voucher which was fantastic value for money. The food was excellent and the service polite. As the other reviewer mentioned we were always asked if we were ready which is a nice touch. We had a very pleasant evening (amusing even as the electrics seemed a bit unstable with the lights going out every so often). Only one down side to this otherwise good find and that is that it lacks atmosphere and it's small size means that it's difficult not to hear your fellow diner's conversations but if you don't mind that then it's worth checking out for the food alone.

The Larder Restaurant - Chicken Tikka Masala

Staying in the attached Hilton for a week, I've eaten in the Larder Restaurant several times,…read moretrying quite a number of things from the dinner menu. I've also enjoyed the breakfast buffet, which is nothing if not perfectly consistent day after day. Scrambled and fried eggs, sausages, blood pudding, sauteed mushrooms, bacon, toast, porridge, smoked salmon, yogurt, juices, fruits, and much more. They'll also prepare nearly anything you want fresh if you want to wait, though I haven't. From the dinner menu, I've had the thyme-infused chicken breast with spinach mash and green beans. It was excellent and very fresh. The two pasta dishes were adequate, but I felt they were just a jumble of sauce and veggies mixed up and I don't recommend them. The wild boar burger was an interesting choice, but with the melted gruyere cheese, it was just odd. I also tried the room service menu once, having the chicken tikka masala, which was good. Served with a pile of rice and riata and chutney and naan, it was nicely spicy and a good sized portion. It was delivered extremely quickly, so I wonder if this is some sort of reheated freezer pack, because there was no way it was prepared fresh. Also, the chicken in there was a grilled chicken breast that had been chopped up, so while it was good, the chicken didn't actually have the flavor it would get from being cooked with the sauce for a while. Service is excellent and very friendly. These people stick to a high standard and I really appreciated everything they did. Obviously, if you're staying in the hotel, this is the closest choice. If I lived in the neighborhood, I think I would still dine here.

I was pleasantly surprised with their wine list. The Rose Champagne was lovely and very reasonably price at 9.5GBP. They had a good variety of other wines and offer 125ml and 250ml glasses (always a plus if you want a bit more wine but not a full glass). The food as well prepared and presented. Started with the tomato and mozzarella salad. Both were drizzled in really nice basalmic and micro greens. For the main I went with the roasted cod which was really great. Nice crispy skin on top yet the flesh wasn't over cooked. It was on top of a slightly spice harissa mash (I soo want to make at home!) and fennel (yay for more fennel!). The flavors worked really well together! Service was the right amount, attentive but not overly present especially as someone dining alone. For atmosphere they had light music in the background that did well in blending the sounds from the bar I could hear. Honestly, I'd come back here even if it meant having to walk or drive instead of take an elevator down :)
