Haven't been to Whitey's in years and thought I'd give them a try. Got the Maggie burger. The pile of mushrooms and onions were thicker than the burger. Had a lather of mustard on the bottom bun that overpowered any flavor that the burger may have had. One of the worst burgers I have had. Will not be back. When I want a mustard burger, I'll go to Swensons for their double cheeseburger with everything where you can taste the burger for a lot less money. Service was good, can't fault the wait staff for a poorly managed kitchen. The patio is also nice. Might be a good spot to watch a game without having a burger. read more

This a weird review. On the upside, the chili is everything I heard about Whiteys. About the best chili I've had in decades. The right balance of meat, beans and other ingredients. We had an order of fried mushrooms, which came out piping hot. A decent amount, plenty enough for two to share. I'd prefer a breaded coating, but these were still pretty good. The menu is outstanding for a wide variety of tavern food selections. Service was adequate. Now the downside. The servers clean up tables using what appears to be a very strong disinfectant. The odor was overpowering, and frequented each time a table is changed over. The layout of the building seems to make it easy to feel less like a restaurant and more like you're eating in the back hallway. I guess it depends on where you get seated. Some areas are pretty dark with not the best lighting. Maybe it's better during summer months. The food makes it worth another try. read more

Delicious, simply delicious. Been coming here for years, but just got around to a review. Came in on a Thursday night around 6pm, day after Christmas. Place was packed. 30 minute wait for the 2 of us, which took 40 minutes. Really pissed the old lady off, but as soon as our fried mushrooms hit the table, she melted and confessed to just being hungry. We both got the mac & cheese dinner, her's with regular chili, mine with jalapeno chili. Came with a side salad and/or coleslaw. Salad was very good. Coleslaw was nondescript. Fried mushrooms hit the spot and came out quickly. The mac & cheese was some of the best I ever had. I expected to hit it with hot sauce, but it needed none- not that it was too hot already, just didn't need any help in the flavor department. Our waitress, Rachel, worked her ass off with an overflowing dining room. The whole experience took a bit longer than it should have, but it wasn't a result of lack of effort. I've heard about Whitey's for years but had never visited. To be honest, the building on the outside is pretty nice (I thought we'd be going to a true dive). The inside was rustic with old decor that kept in theme with this casual restaurant. Whitey's is known for their chili. While I don't enjoy chili, we shared Coliseum Fries (fries, chili, bacon and cheese). They were delicious! I ordered a white pizza with chicken and onion. It was moist and cheesy! Yum! The burgers were huge! Everyone enjoyed their food! Be aware that they do not accept credit cards at Whitey's so come prepared with cash! Been going here for a number of years. Never had a bad meal. I have tried burgers which are outstanding, chili, even a chili dog. Delish! Can get pretty crowded on a weekend. In the summer they have volleyball and then it's really slammed. Can get very crowded and waits can be long. Might want to try going on an off night or an off time. First time get a burger, you won't be sorry. 2nd time get chili. The sides are ala cart but more than 1 person can eat so 2 can share some sides. Large patio with a large sand volleyball court. Almost everyday in the summer the week is open to volleyball leagues. If you're looking for a competitive volleyball league during the week then check out the website and sign up. The menu has several options with daily drink and food specials. I have been told that they are known for their burgers or chicken wings. Instead, I went with the personal pizza. The pizza was good and filling for one person. The food here is a 4/5. The biggest turn away from this bar and grill is that it is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM inside the bar but there will be a service charge, so make sure you bring cash. Several of my friends were raving about this place so for research purposes, had to see for myself. To make a long story short, this place lives up to the hype. This place is very casual, seemed like a lot of patrons knew each other as well as staff. Immediately you will see hundreds of the same beer glass hung on the ceiling of the bar (you can purchase your own and get it engraved with your name or nickname and keep it there). While waiting to be seated, you can play darts, watch people play volleyball outside (or watch them play on the TVs from the bar)...hell you can also sing karaoke on Wednesday nights. Happy hour: way to one up on everyone, Whitey's. Only Mon-Fri 3pm-6pm at bar only. Only domestics though: $2.50 16 oz bud cans, $3 for 22 oz Bud light drafts or $6 Bud light pitcher. But here's the kicker: Free food also!!!! Mon: flatbread, Tue: tots, Wed: Chef's choice, Thur: wings but bring your own sauce and Fri: pizza. Unfortunately I missed happy hour but was able to indulge in the chili flight and massive burger; both of which they are known for. A place that serves more than one chili is a place that I call home. Got 4 different chilis but to be honest my favorite was the chicken chili. Nope, didn't get heartburn at the end and you only get maybe like 6oz of each chili on the chili flight. None were outrageously hot hot spicy but flavor was solid on each and honestly i had to go back to the menu to determine which flavors were which...they all kind of tasted the same except for the chicken. That is not a let down though, because all were hella tasty. For my main meal, I ordered the Dagwood platter which was basically an open space sandwich, the innards were just oozing out which was so beautiful. I could not finish all that I had ordered also because the server was so amazing I never saw the bottom of my stein, she kept it full. I will definitely return to try more of their items. I do not understand why this is place is popular. The waiter smoke smell past by us every few minutes. The $5 fries are not seasoned and blander than a potato. The $11 cheese burger was greesy/overcooked/messy/bland and very underwhelming. The only quality thing was my $2 cup of coke. The food was just ok, and they do not accept credit cards. I guess this place is an institution, but it's not impressive. There are definitely better bar and grill places within easy driving distance, that have managed to step into the 20th century as far as payment. The back patio is heated and nice, I'm sure it very nice in the summer. I had very high hopes for Whitey's. The reviews looked great. The pictures of the food looked outstanding. Maybe I set the bar too high, but Whiteys did not live up to the hype. When you first walk in, it is very dark, and to get someone to seat us, the bartender rang a cowbell... odd but ok. We ordered 3 different apps to all share. We tried the Caribbean shrimp, the chili flight and the nachos with shrimp. The shrimp were awful... VERY small shrimp that were not breaded, and just sprinkled with some Caribbean seasoning. No effort at all. The nachos were okay. They used a lot of mozzarella which was nice, but everything else comes on the side and you basically build your own. The chili flight was the saving grace for the restaurant. It was the only thing I truly enjoyed. You get 4 small bowls of every kind of chili. They were all delicious, even the vegetarian. Like the nachos though, you get a thing of side chips, and they are just cheap store bough circular corn chips. Absolutely nothing special. For the burger I got the BOMB burger. It was very boring. It is literally just the burger with Mac and cheese on it. No sauce, no other cheese, no veggies, just boring. And the burger itself was very greasy and soaked the pretzel bun very quickly. The fries were good and you do get a lot of those. Overall I was not impressed. I have been going here for years and never reviewed it. The staff is always great and the atmosphere is great for a relaxed evening. Our dart league used to play here and they always accommodated us. Also good for informal company events after work. The Czar burger is my favorite. I hold the blue cheese though. Always a pile of mushrooms and onions overflowing onto the plate. Whitey's chili is also delicious and multiple varieties. The chicken chili is a good change of pace from time to time. One thing that is still around is freebie food for happy hour. I went there Saturday about 6pm. was told about 45 min wait. I was told bar room seating was first come first serve by the host, ( I think his name was Dennis). so we went into the bar, just so happened people were walking out as we were coming in at a table in the bar. All was good. Waitress said we could sit there that at the long table and we could share the rest of the table with another couple. Well mr high and mighty " Dennis"came in and kicked us out of the seat and said" I said at the bar!" don't you know the difference Dr between the bar and a table? I explained he didn't make that clear and that the waitress said it was ok. He still kicked us out of the table and he seated the other couple and left the rest of the tables open and wouldn't let us sit there. So we sat at the bar. Throwback to the 70's in this joint! So the interior needs a little "sprucing up"...who cares! this is not exactly the type of place you come for the ambiance...this is all about the grub! Burger, fries, rings, beer...need I say more?!?!? We shared two different burgers, the Black & Blue (blue cheese and bacon) and the Maggie (mushroom overload!!!). both were as juicy as could be and overflowing (literally) with flavor. We also shared both fries and onion rings around the table and everyone loved both. Lastly, the beer was cheap. I am underwhelmed with our experience at Whitey's this evening. My husband and I have heard many great things about this establishment but after our visit this evening we will most likely not return. We arrive around 6:45 and got seated immediately on the patio, despite it being busy. Within 5 minutes or so our waitress had come to take our drink order. We placed that as well as our food order. We ordered only entrees and it took well over 40 minutes for our food to come out. We understand the kitchen being slower with how busy it was, however, our waitress only checked on us 1 time and that was after we had already received our food 40+ mins after we had ordered. We had to ask another waitress to see if she could get us an update on our food. Other tables that were sat after us had already gotten food before us. We ordered burgers and 1 side of fries. The fries came out first and were barely hot. They seemed as if they had been sitting under the warmer for several minutes. Our burgers finally came and we weren't even offered silverware. My biggest issue with our visit was the lack of communication from our waitress regarding the lengthy wait time for food and not being offered silverware. They also only accept cash or checks and didn't even mention it before serving us. Thankful we had cash on us but it would be nice if the servers would mention it to their tables just in case Unfortunately this was not a great experience and we will again more than likely not return. read more
