I had heard good things about Whitey's and finally tried it on a Tuesday evening with some friends. We were seated quickly outside on the patio (closed and covered now, as it was 30ish degrees). It was brighter out there than in the main restaurant and made for nice seating. After perusing the menu, we went for the black n' bleu burger, the B.O.M.B. burger, the chipotle garden vegetable chili, and orders of fries and their jalapeño bottle caps. All were great! The mac and cheese on the BOMB burger was creamy and excellent, and my companions really enjoyed their burgers. The chili was awesome...I have been thinking about it since. The fries were fresh and hot (they needed salt, but good other than that), and the jalapeño bottle caps were the right amount of spice and came with a perfect cup of ranch for accompaniment. Their hot sauce is great too! Service was friendly and efficient as well. I will begin by saying I have always considered Whiteys one of the best burgers in Cleveland. Normally I really enjoy the burgers and it leaves me thinking about them for months thereafter. This experience was slightly different, and that may just be what I ordered.... My group ordered the Firecracker burgers, Maggy, side of fries and tots. Fries: delicious!! Hot and fresh cut. Its very hard to find a fry this good anymore. Tots: Also very good paired with the Whiteys hot sauce. Although, there is nothing very special about the tots. I assume they are frozen and simply reheated much unlike the fries. Burgers: It seemed to be the general theme that everyone thought their burgers were cooked just right. However the beef lacked any flavor or seasoning whatsoever. A little salt or pepper on the grill would've gone a long way here. I was disappointed as the beef is arguably the most important part. Mushrooms and onions: Also lacked any flavor whatsoever and needed some form of seasoning. Not sure if it was steaming in a crockpot all day, but it needed something more. Firecracker fried jalapeños: A complete hit and everyone thought they were fantastic. They need to add more of the special sauce also. Service was acceptable. We were here years ago and things haven't changed. It is still a dark place, the service was efficient and friendly and the food was as expected. My wife had a cheeseburger that was large, cooked to her taste and tasty. I had ribs-a full slab was $20 and accompanied by tasty slaw. The ribs were tender, had a lot of sauce and quite a bargain. There was a generous helping of slaw. We had an order of communal french fries which were just the right degree of crispy and tenderness inside. All in all, for bar food it was a good choice. Yummy comfort food and prices not too bad. They have a special for $5 margaritas on Mondays which is awesome! Got the Coliseum fries as an appetizer which was good, but definitely needed salt. Ordered the Dagwood burger which was yummy, they don't come with any side so I ordered the fried mushrooms as a side which were really good. For a side the portion was huge and could easily serve 2+ people. Their burger portions are also extremely large as well, I took half of it to-go! You know what I don't appreciate...when I get out of an event at 10:30pm at night, needing to drive drive 10 minutes away to stop at the bank because Whitey is "cash only" only to arrive shortly after 11pm to be told they are no longer serving food, which is annoying, but I could get over, because those are the posted food service hours. However, when I'm sitting at the bar at 12:40am and a couple comes in and is given 2 French Onion Soups...I thought food wasn't being served after 11pm...what the hell? I've been to Whitey's many times, and enjoyed my experience, but that is ridiculous! I don't care who are, you don't get special treatment. Absolute best burger around - clearly you can see from the photos huge patty with a mound of sautéed mushroom . Had a side of tots which were more than enough for 2. Thankfully we heard in advance what to expect so we also split the ginormous burger too . Drinks were also very well made . Cash only but has an ATM onsite in case you forget . Packed. 35-40 wait for party of 3 on Saturday nite. Unfortunately had to wait 5 mins for server to greet us. We ordered our food upon greeting & took only 8 Minutes for appetizer & then salad came then tots & lastly the pizza & burger. So that worked out just how we woulda asked! We ordered Chili Flight app which was great way to try em all. She let us sub the spicy one for an extra veggie & it came w/ large bowl of cheese plus onion & sour cream. Awesome. Shack burger w/ grilled onion & tomatoes was huge & had to cut in half to hold. Perfect cook & super tasty. The veggie pizza was nice size & pretty thick & dense. Good amount of toppings too. The tater tots was a good portion & came extra crispy per request & was nicely seasoned. The side salad was only lack luster item. At $7 it coulda used more toppings than 1 slice of cucumber & 1 tomato. The server was nice & place was lively & had the NFL games on all around. 3 of us for just over $50 w/ tip & No drinks or desserts. I love the vibe here; you can sit inside or outside. it was obviously packed for fathers day and had quite the wait but i felt it was worth it. i only took a picture of 2 of the burgers at the table but all the portions were huge, the Maggie (mushroom heaven) and the month's saloon burger were loaded and tasted phenomenal as well although not pictured. the fries and onion rings are amazing, definitely some of the best fries around town and I would go there just for the fries! the firecracker burger came with breaded jalapenos where the menu just said jalapenos which I did not love but the server brought me a side of fresh jalapenos when I explained the confusion so that was really nice. the flavor of all the burgers was awesome, and I do not feel like you can go wrong with choosing any one of them. service was a bit slow for father's day but that's a given with how packed it was, and i enjoyed the environment and food very much. they are cash only so remember that if you plan to stop in. i cannot wait to go back and try more burgers and their famous chili! read more

We went for the Friday fish fry and it was a total disappointment. Waste of $50! We should have just went to Walmart and bought a box of crappy frozen fish fillets and a bag of tater tots. We visited on the way to a concert and LOVED this place! The ambiance was amazing! We loved the dim lighting, decor, and layout! The music was the correct volume and the music choice was perfect! They're known for their chili so we tried the coliseum fries which has the chili on top, the meat was delicious and the melted cheese added a great flavor. I have wanted to try Whitey's for years. I remember them placing highly in Cleveland's best burger competitions in the past, so I was looking forward to celebrating our anniversary there. The restaurant and bar are comfortable and welcoming. The staff is courteous and knowledgeable. With that said, the burgers were disappointing, but maybe my expectations were too high. My wife and I had the Maggy burger. The burger was perfectly cooked but flavorless even though it was smothered with an abundance of sautéed mushrooms and onions. The problem was lack of seasoning. A little salt and pepper can go a long way. The mushrooms were straight out of the can, and were hardly sautéed, just warm. I can say the same for the famous chili...no seasoning! Fries were great but didn't do anything to elevate the experience. All and all, I don't think we will make the hour and fifteen minute drive to go back. read more

Was invited to have dinner with some friends here. Had a bit of a wait for a table but not too long as a high top became available. Service was great throughout the meal. We started with the colosseum fries which were delicious! I got the chili sampler so I could try all their flavors. I liked the original the best and the spicy jalapeño was a close second, and I generally don't like spice. They were all good though. Friends enjoyed their meals as well. CASH only. Sat on the enclosed patio, and it was nice. We could watch the volleyball game played by random people. The noise inside wasn't loud, but the acoustics made hearing a little difficult. The menu has a lot on it, not just burgers, but that list was extensive. I had Whitey's Chili Garden salad. It was similar to a taco salad, but with Whitey's famous chili on it. The cheese and veggie pizza was loaded with chopped veggies and was very good. The burger was large and delicious with the crispy fries. The fried mushrooms were delicious. We visited Whitey's for a volleyball end-of-season gathering. We booked a table for 15 and they accommodated us. Upon arrival, we were promptly seated and given menus. Our drink orders were taken and I noticed they had Downeast Cider on tap. Score! So that's what I ordered. When it arrived, it was nice and cold. I really enjoy this cider. For dinner, I looked at my previous yelp reviews and I saw that I had eaten the Maggie burger. The Czar burger was similar to Maggie, but with Swiss cheese, so I went with the Czar burger and a cup of white chicken chili. The chili was served first and it was excellent, as always. A while later, my Czar burger was delivered and it was hot and looked amazing. After I moved some of the mushrooms out of the way, I got a bite of the burger. It was very good. The melted Swiss cheese did not taste like Swiss cheese, but it was good. There were enough mushrooms on the thing to call them a side dish. For realz yo! I ate the mushrooms with a fork and polished off the burger. It was very yummy. I tasted some french fries that someone had ordered and they were also very good. The food and service were excellent and then the girls went outside and played some volleyball. Fun times! read more

I live out of state now and haven't been back to the buckeye state in over 10 years. I was in town this August. Swensons and Skyway have always been a standard go to choice in NE Ohio for a great burger! Now if you like big, thick juicy $10.00 burgers, you need to go to Whitey's in Richfield. I used to live in Bath, and this place was, and remains a top favorite in all of the USA. Whitey's used to be like a big house converted to a restaurant. Now it's a big place with sand volleyball courts and outdoor dining. Oh, the power of a good burger and great service! Ignore any naysayers here. They must be a brainwashed Democrat, that can't think for themselves and don't have a kind word to say about anything. The burgers and service are outstanding. Waited over an hour and a half for our food, there were other large parties so we tried to be understanding however tables that were sat well over an hour after us were getting appetizers and we still had absolutely no food. Every year or so I make a trip to Whiteys to sit, enjoy a cold beer and enjoy one of the unheralded and best kept burger secrets in the country. Service is what it is, when things are busy you might need to wait a minute, and that is a-ok because your food will come out hot and fresh. Its worth the wait, people. Anyone poo-pooing the "cash only" aspect of this place has either never run a business or is a poor ass who lives on credit. If you don't have cash to pay for a meal and generous tip don't go out to eat, especially at Whiteys where the "old school" is now. What ever did we do before credit card machines? I recommend the standard fare: a classic cheese burger, onion rings and a cold drink of your choice. Sure, you can go to Swenson's etc. but lets get real here, folks, Swensons is now a chain and the quality isn't what it once was. Haven't been to Whitey's in years and thought I'd give them a try. Got the Maggie burger. The pile of mushrooms and onions were thicker than the burger. Had a lather of mustard on the bottom bun that overpowered any flavor that the burger may have had. One of the worst burgers I have had. Will not be back. When I want a mustard burger, I'll go to Swensons for their double cheeseburger with everything where you can taste the burger for a lot less money. This a weird review. On the upside, the chili is everything I heard about Whiteys. About the best chili I've had in decades. The right balance of meat, beans and other ingredients. We had an order of fried mushrooms, which came out piping hot. A decent amount, plenty enough for two to share. I'd prefer a breaded coating, but these were still pretty good. The menu is outstanding for a wide variety of tavern food selections. Service was adequate. Now the downside. The servers clean up tables using what appears to be a very strong disinfectant. The odor was overpowering, and frequented each time a table is changed over. The layout of the building seems to make it easy to feel less like a restaurant and more like you're eating in the back hallway. I guess it depends on where you get seated. Some areas are pretty dark with not the best lighting. Maybe it's better during summer months. The food makes it worth another try. read more
