We were looking for a different place for a Friday night fish fry. we hadn't been to the whistle stop in years, so we thought we'd give it another try as it was not that good last time. This time was even more disappointing that the last. The waitress was very pleasant & efficient, but when she asked how everything was, I just couldn't say "ok". it was almost inedible from A-Z. The salad bar at first looked impressive, lots of choices, but you could smell the bagged lettuce, and nothing was cold. The warm salad dressing wilted my bagged lettuce. The potato salad looked like the potatoes that are freezed dried, & you put them into water to bring them back to like. And the real clencher, there was fake, imitation bacon bits in the campbell's beans & in the german potato salad. Evidently, the owners just lost interest in the place as you can see in the laziness of the food preparation. They serve cod for their fish fry, which I really don't care for, especially at $12. 95 for a dinner, so I ordered the more expensive breaded seafood platter which has less cod on the plate. There was a small piece of deep fried fish with no flavor whatsoever in the batter, two small scallops, almost bay scallop size in the breading, and one stuffed shrimp. I took a bite out of the stuffed shrimp & almost through up. It was rancid & old. The baked potato was gray & was in the oven way too long. The waitress noticed I hadn't touched the potato, & brought me another, but it was also way over done & grey. I really can't find one nice thing to say about this old landmark restaurant. Oh, yes, the butter & bread was good. Really a shame. Almost $40 for two guests to have fish fry dinners, and couldn't eat anything. What really amazed me the most, is that the waitress must be so used to getting complaints about the quality of the food, that she didn't look shocked when I said that it was not good, & never offered a refund on our bill. As Chef Ramsey would say on his program, the owners have just lost interest with the place. If the food is that bad, I would hate to see what the kitchen looks like. Doesn't even deserve one star in my opinion. read more
