Never Going Back February 2026…read moreI have been staying at this hotel for years, had birthday parties here, celebrated Christmas's and holidays, and a long long time ago I even used to work there, but it has been awhile since I stayed there prior to Valentine's Day 2026. I am a travel agent and I travel a lot and stay at a lot of hotels. I love to swim and there are only 2 options in Auburn, NY, unfortunately, and I don't care for Hilton's pool the next block over because it is surrounded by windows so the room is cold. However, after last weekend, I will never be staying at this hotel again or any Holiday Inn. We arrived at 4:00pm on Valentine's Day, check-in is at 3:00pm, and the front desk attendant proceeded to tell us they didn't have any rooms ready. Uh......what? It's 4:00. I could understand if we were early or even 5 - 10 minutes after 3:00pm, but we were not. So, he calls housekeeping and finds out that room #203 is ready, directly to the side of the service elevator. Ok, fine. All night long it was "Boom Boom Boom Boom" from the elevator doors slamming shut and mechanical clanking noises etc. and when we turned on the air conditioner to cool down the sweltering room, it sounded like a freight train for the duration it was on. This clunking symphony continued all night (and morning). Fine. I'm not usually bothered by much, but I was definitely annoyed. Don't even get me started about the ridiculous sliding barn door that doesn't lock or actually close in any way so anyone in the entire room can hear EVERY SINGLE NOISE coming from the bathroom. Who in their right mind EVER thought that was tasteful or anything that people WANT?????!!! Then we went to get in the pool, but there were a bunch of kids/people in there, so I decided to wait. Being a plus-sized girl I am not really a big fan of running the hallways in my bathing suit for everyone to see, so my fiance checked the pool every 1/2 hour to see if it had cleared out any. No. Ok, I guess I'll get up early in the morning and go swimming. It should be quieter then. Well, when I got up in the morning, I went to use the black make-up washcloth they give guests to use for makeup removal and when I opened it up, there were crusty bits of God knows what in it, but it looked like morning eye crusties.....not from me or the fiance.......so I couldn't use that disgusting thing. I then realized that we had only been given one set of towels, including one washcloth, for a room for 2 people. Since I couldn't use the makeup washcloth and my fiance had already used the one and only regular washcloth, he had to go hunt down the non-existent housekeeping staff to find a washcloth for me. After this, we finally head out to go down to the pool, and when we get to the main elevator (that comes out right next to the pool..........it is out of order. Are you kidding me? At this point I am starting to get really frustrated that I stayed here and I am about to check-out and go home, but I really still wanted to go swimming since I paid just under $200 to do that, so we headed down the stairs across from the elevator and tried not to freeze to death in our swimming attire while the stairway area temp was about 10 degrees because it is also connected to an outside door at the bottom and the stairways are clearly not heated. Now, on the IHG (Holiday Inn's parent company/owner) app, it states that the pool operating hours are: 9:00am - 8:00pm. Ok, it's 9:30am and we try to open the gate, and it's locked. The sign on the front of the locked gate states that the "Atrium quiet hours are 9:00pm - 9:00am." Ok, it's 9:30am, so fiance heads to the front desk to inquire about getting the gate unlocked. While he is gone, a family with little kids all ready with their bathing suits and swimmies on, comes down to go swimming too. Fiance returns from the front desk, who is refusing to open the pool, and he un-velcros the sign from the gate to take to the front desk to show them what it says. I double check the IHG app to make sure I read the pool hours correctly and the manager at the front desk, Carrie, says that she has to "Verify that" and also that she has "no idea who put that sign there" and proceeds to do nothing but refuse to open the pool. Oh, and by the way, the actual Holiday Inn website also lists the exact same pool operating hours as the IHG app, and the OWNER in their own response to other reviews visible online to the public, specifically states the POOL OPERATING HOURS ARE 9:00am - 8:00am, Carrie. Quiet hours were respected, 9:00pm - 9:00am, there was absolutely nothing else going on that day, and you had multiple people waiting to get in the pool and yet, the great and wonderful Carrie could care less about the little kids excited to go swimming, hospitality or customer service of any kind, or actually knowing what Holiday Inn's own website, app, and owner actually say, and was more interested in being rude and inhospitable. Oh, where shall I begin on this awful stay in this hotel. I checked in Monday night 12/1, I went to…read moremy room (503), and it was super super cold in there, 65 degrees. I tried using my thermostat turning up to 74 degrees, and it didn't kick on at all. After about 30 minutes of waiting for it to turn on, it didn't. I went down the front desk around 10:20 and the lady sent up Scott, to look at my heater, but before he came in my room, I told him "There is a space heater in here, but I don't feel comfortable using it." He responded "Oh, people use them all the time" and offered to bring me another one. I then talked to my boss, and she called the front desk, to talk to whoever. Then at 11:30 the guy called and offered to move me to a different room, I declined because it was already 11:30 and I had quite a bit of things with me. So, at this point, I accepted that I was sleeping with no heat. I bundled up and used the 2nd blanket. It was miserable. The next morning, I go down to check out, and I told the lady at the front desk about my stay and that she was "super sorry and appreciated me telling her." I also explained that I wanted a refund and she told me that her GM had to do that. After leaving my boss called back there and talked to the lady at the front desk, and she used that they offered to move me, but I didn't want to against me. She then, sent my boss to the GM office fully aware that the general Manager wasn't even there yet. We still haven't heard back from the GM, and we will NOT be staying at this hotel ever again.

Gail and Gary are just wonderful people who invite you in to share a piece of their home. We are a younger couple (early 30s and late 20s), so in some B&Bs I find a bit of fussiness from the proprietors that makes me feel like I am in a museum rather than a relaxing, homey sanctuary. Well that is NOT a problem here! Wicker Garden is personable. Guests have access to a common living room with fireplace and cozy couch, snacks, wine glasses, mugs, coffee, tea, etc. We sat here one evening chatting away with Gail and Gary, then ordered a pizza delivery. Gail provided us with plates and everything we needed to enjoy a night in (in our amazing accommodations, which brings me to the room....) Rose room- spacious, with a stately canopy bed, a gas fireplace, a couch and a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and plenty of hot water. It was truly our sanctuary for a wintry weekend. The bed had beautiful coverlets and sheets, down pillows. I don't sleep as well at home! And even on 0 degree days, it was plenty toasty all day and night. Now what's a B&B without a wonderful breakfast? This one was top notch. Great, fragrant coffee served in large one-of-a-kind mugs. It seems like a baked fruit, a warm bread and an egg dish makes a basic template for what to expect, and Gail can accommodate any dietary needs. Finally, the grounds/location are picturesque. I only regret I forgot to read or ask about the history of the property. There is a red barn and plenty of open surrounding fields, stars out bright at night. Even snow covered, it looks like the cover of a story book. I highly recommend a stay here. You really can't go wrong. And it was conveniently located for wine touring and proximity to the town of Auburn.

My husband was uncertain of sitting on the furniture as he wasn't sure if it was just age or dirty/hadn't been cleaned. I had no problem with the cleanliness myself. The bed was a full size rather than the queen I reserved but the mattress itself was fine and comfortable to sleep on- it did its job of being a bed. The bathroom had seen better days and I couldn't plug the tub but I'm a shower person so I could live with it. There was larger sized mini-fridge, plenty of space to land items, and a good amount of seating in the room. I didn't have an issue with noise but I also view hotels like apartments- you're going to hear people moving around and sometimes question what the heck they are doing. The virtual check in had an out of order sign during my stay, so there was an actual person at the front desk for check in and check out, but watch for virtual in the future. Because it's right in downtown Auburn I didn't begrudge the lack of breakfast- you can literally walk to any number of eateries or a grocery store or a bar if you want. I didn't see vending machines or obviously purchasable items in the hotel, so if the town is closed up you are kinda screwed there. Again, if you're just looking for a bed it will do, but the place definitely needs some care, repair, and updates if it really wants to shine again.

The room is small, which doesn't bother me. Lighting wasn't ideal. Clean. The location is great if you actually like walking to places rather than being by the highway. There are various nearby food and coffee spots and Wegman's is a few blocks away.

The job that my wife and I have requires us to work some rather odd hours so when we do stay somewhere being able to sleep at some rather odd hours is always a bonus. And by saying being able to sleep what I mean is people checking out at 10:00 a.m. with their kids running up and down the halls making noise and the hotel staff cleaning the rooms sometimes having loud conversations. All of this is perfectly fine usually because typically nobody is trying to sleep at 10:00 in the morning except for me. This place worked out well because they have individual bungalows. There is no hallway to run up and down and make noise and make noise, there are neighbors but there's a space in between each bungalow so you're not going to hear them. We didn't actually check in for my Friday night stay until about 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning. It was nice and quiet and we were able to get to sleep rather quickly. The room itself was super clean, The kitchen did not have a stove or a hot plate however we weren't really in need of one. They did have some snacks available as complimentary in the room. Nothing huge I mean a couple granola bars and some oatmeal and a couple little bags of chips however compared to other places I've stayed that offer nothing except a vending machine down the noisy hallway... Yeah this was much better :-) If you're looking to do something in the Skaneateles area , this place is literally 2 minutes down the road from the center of town. They of course offer a late check in arrangement that I was very happy to take advantage of. They leave your room key in a secure area with a note that has any information you may need and an emergency phone number if you need to wake them up for anything. So I by all means recommend staying here If you're in the area.

I would not recommend the ground floor master suite to an elderly couple only because the ceiling height is dangerously low above the commode and both my husand and I almost knocked ourselves out more then once when decending and ascending.
