The master suite was amazing. The bed was very comfortable and the bathtub with jets was so relaxing after a long day of kayaking!

Our hostess left us a list of instructions and tips and was very quiet and respectful of our privacy. We could call her if anything went wrong, but otherwise, I didn't actually see her. I wouldn't have been opposed to this though because I wanted to thank her! Katie, our host, created an incredible breakfast bar. There was Oui yogurt, hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, cheese, a variety of cereal, oatmeal, milk, orange juice, coffee, and tea. She had also generously stocked cookies from a bakery, granola bars, bags of nuts, biscotti, and other easy-to-grab snacks. Our suite was beautiful. My pictures don't really do it justice, but there were two chairs, a drawer, table, and a TV in one side, and everything we needed for a bedroom on the other. Katie also provided luxurious bathrobes and luxury shampoo and conditioner (TeaTree). We also had access to the dining room and living room, which made it feel like we had a home away from home. One of my favorite parts of the house though was the front porch, which contained two swings and two chairs. I loved starting my morning on the covered porch and will have a hard time leaving that behind. The location is incredible, allowing us to walk to the lake, restaurants, and any shops we wanted to visit. Katie was the perfect host. The decor was stunning and our experience couldn't have been better.

We were on a fast trip for a wedding and allowed us only to spend two nights at 34 State. We so appreciated Katie & Jack's kindness, hospitality and helpfulness. Not to mention getting kisses from their beautiful lab, Oakley. We stayed in the elegant Barrow Suite. It's on the second floor as is their other suite, but they are working on a suite on the first floor for those with problems walking up stairs. Continental breakfast awaited us every morning as a fridge stocked with yogurt, fresh fruit, beer and many more items. I commented they were out of water and upon our return, not only was the fridge fully restocked, but a note with a special touch was provided. It is within walking distance to downtown Skaneateles without staying right in the middle of the main road. There is a big dinning room and living room, along with a beautiful porch with a swing to spend the afternoons drinking a cocktail. They attend to every need you may have i.e. reservations to restaurants and will follow up with restaurant to make sure you had a great experience and the best table. We look forward to our next trip and without a doubt where we will stay!

Great breakfasts! And Sabina and my wife enjoyed swapping pet stories as the Inn's resident pup who's now up in years still makes his way around to greet guests. She even told me (as a biker who rode in) that while she didn't like the noise of motorcyles, that bikers were typically her neatest and cleanest guests :) I hope I met expectations! Lastly, the grounds are tranquil day or night, and the newborn fawn in the garden just made the stay extra special! Some suggestions we left with Sabina: Ceiling fans would be a good addition to the rooms. Although the inn has central air, on this warm humid May weekend some air circulation in the room above the set house temp would have been good. Still - Sabina gave us a fan for the room and lowered the temperature a bit for our second night there! Also, considering it is wine country, I'd suggest individual refrigerators for each room as opposed to one shared mini-fridge for all the guests to share. Guests should also be aware that if you chose a room in the font of the house that the occasional late night truck traffic on US 20 may disturb the lighter sleeper. Those points asiide, I'd agree with our breakfast mate who has stayed at the inn 3 times.... deffiinitely a repeat if we're back in the area!

The large bathroom with marble accents and a HUGE walk-in shower with seating also made for a memorable weekend. We didn't really have a chance to explore the rest of the common areas in the house, mainly because we spent so much time enjoying our time in the room itself. Hannum House is right next door to the lovely Sherwood Inn where we dined one night and had breakfast every morning. Nestled in the heart of Skaneateles, there's plenty to do if you venture around town too.

As I walked into the Sherwood Inn (next door and where you check in), I was greeted with a, "Hi Mr. Gates, welcome back, it is nice to see you. Your room is ready. Do you want me to walk you over?" Mind you, my wife and I are retired teachers and not high rollers, but are treated like millionaires every time we go there. We next had a spectacular lunch at the Sherwood Inn, again treated like we were the most important people in the world. After lunch, we moved in to our room. It is without a doubt, the most gorgeous room we have ever stayed in. Everything, including a spectacular bathroom is world class. Our stay was wonderful, made so nice by Sherwood Inn workers. A special shout-out to Chad, Robin, the breakfast crew, and all the ladies at the front-desk. We certainly will return to our favorite place!

We had never stayed at a bed and breakfast and weren't sure what to expect. This place exceeded our expectations. The mansion itself is beautiful. Every time we walked around the house we discovered more treasures, everything from the molding to antique pieces. The property has a lovely view of the Erie Canal. Each morning there was coffee waiting or us outside our door on a beautifully arranged tray. Then we went down to breakfast. I hate to repeat myself but the table was also beautifully arranged. We tried several different dishes during our stay, each one delicious. Our host, John and Rebecca, were there for our every need, without being intrusive. After running around all day It was so relaxing to return to our room each night. We asked several relatives to stop by and see the place. Our Aunt was thrilled as she had driven by hundreds of times and never been inside. She was not disappointed. One extra point. They have a friendly dog named Riley who helped us forget how much we missed our own pets. We plan to return here each time we return to Syracuse.

Sadly our experience didn't live up to Mirbeau's supposed good reputation. The gap between the price and the value of service was the size of the Grand Canyon. Our room was about $450 a night, closer to $500 after taxes. The rooms are pretty, even in the winter the view of the garden was nice. The bathrooms in the cottage rooms are spacious. Things went downhill at dinner in the attached restaurant. We were one of about 4 tables so it was a slow night. Our server did an adequate job, but the food was extremely disappointing. My fiance reported that there were bits of shell in all of his oysters. The cheese board wasn't very inspiring, for $24 I could have made the same thing myself at home after a stop at Wegmans. My filet was cooked wrong twice, after the second time where it came out still slightly overcooked I had it taken off the bill. My fiance finished half of his wagyu as it also fell very flat for him. Mind you, this was a $140 dollar steak entree, and the chef didn't even bother to salt the meat. We ended up having about half our meal comped and it was still over $300 to eat one of the worst fine dining meals we've ever had. The spa itself, like the rooms, were also just okay. The locker rooms are spacious and well stocked, and kept clean. One place that's lacking is that there's not enough waiting space for everyone. The "tranquility" waiting room with the foot pool is not enough room for people who are trying to lounge/meditate AND for people to congregate waiting for their spa services. It was awkward not really having somewhere to sit. My massage was ok, it felt more like a Swedish massage than it did a deep tissue. There wasn't any opportunity to request more attention be paid to certain areas with more tension (I told her my right arm is usually more sore and she kind of just ignored me and didn't touch that area at all). My masseuse said I was breathing incorrectly so I was too distracted by my breathing to enjoy my massage. We ended up cancelling our second night. I will never recommend Mirbeau to anyone.

Lunch was top, with the steak sandwich and truffle fries. The steak was cooked medium rare and the leek and herb chimichurri was delightful, frwsh, and delicious. Dinner was absolutely superb. The lamb tenderloin was one of the best appetizers I have had in the area. The pickled mushrooms and pea purée complimented the lamb, which was perfectly cooked. You don't often see lamb tenderloin on menus and this was a treat. My partner loved the tuna tartare special and the steak frites. We sat at the bar and had great conversations with the bartender, Ed, rounded off with great drinks and desserts. The food was memorable and we will be back.
