Whispering Pines Cabin in Hocking Hills also owns the Whippoorwill Cabin, and it is grouped together with Whispering Pines on their web site and the hockinghills.com web site.  This review is specifically about the Whippoorwill. Booked a 3-night stay over a month in advance for our anniversary trip at end of March, beginning of April. 4pm check-in. All good, received a call the day of our stay around 3pm saying the facility was ready and we could proceed to the cabin. We were exploring the area, so we didn't actually get to the cabin until about 4 hours later, around 7pm. The cabin is located on a small, almost one lane road, in a rather populated area with a couple of pine trees and a privacy fence around. To our surprise, we found the cabin literally like 15-20 feet from the road. We had just enough room to park our SUV. Was not secluded. Hoping for the best, we unpacked our car and headed inside. The size of the cabin was fine. First thing we do is check out the kitchenette, then the hot tub. We were starting to get a bad vibe after seeing all the ceiling cracks (I could live with the cracks) and bug dirt, then the hot tub. It was cold and gross. The bathroom was dirty. We courteously called the owner to discuss the hot tub and the issues. My husband specifically mentioned about the dirt in hot tub and the temperature of the hot tub and the owner said it was just warming up and that the sediment was a force of nature that could not be helped and we should refer to our contract. (Oh, did I get a contract? I got a confirmation receipt stating, "Things to know before your stay", stating I had read and agree to the rates and policy terms and conditions...nothing was else emailed to me.) He stated that his cleaning people were just there that day. He also said the sediment in the tub was due to all the minerals in the local water. I was concerned about the dirty surfaces in the bathroom. We were so upset, we didn't even unpack. We decided right then to look for another cabin or a motel, by then it was 8pm. We called an told the owner we would be leaving immediately (message left on his voicemail because he wouldn't pick up our call after the first one), informed him that as a courtesy we would be happy to pay for one night, but would like to cancel our reservation for the remaining 2 nights left of the weekend and that we did not want to pay, because of the situation in the cabin. I mean, we booked in anticipation of everything being running to temp and working in order upon arrival, and it was not even close. Even if the hot tub was clean, we could not get in it at 74 degrees. It was not ready 4 hours after he told us it was ready. Nevertheless, he charged us for the whole weekend and never called us back. My guess is there were no cleaning people and he went to the cabin at 3pm and turned all the power on, then left and told us it was ready. I wish I would have seen the previous reviews here before booking. It was a stressful, unpleasant start to our anniversary weekend. I waited almost a month to see if the owner would refund the 2 nights that we did not use, before I posted this review, but he never returned our call. We absolutely do not recommend renting from this "cabin" or its owner.

This review is specifically about Whippoorwill Cabin. This cabin is budget friendly and has it's positives and negatives. I enjoyed my two night stay here as it was relaxing, but there were a few unclear details in the description of the cabin. Positives: - The kitchen came equipped with utensils, pots, pans, cups, bowls and silverware. The stove, freezer, sink and sink worked perfectly. -The T.V had multiple channels that came in clearly. -Towels for the bathroom, dish rags, dish soap and wash clothes are provided so there isn't a hassle to pack them. - There is a hot tub. - The grill comes with grill untensils. -The atmosphere of the cabin and area was relaxing. It has pictures hanging of nature and has hard wood floors (easy to clean up messes)! The backyard is just trees, but good for firewood. Negatives: - The air conditioning is a window air-conditioner, not central air. It is located in the living room/kitchen area so the bedroom got warm at night. -The fire pit wasn't a fire ring and is located right next to a fence which could be dangerous. -The bed is harder than a rock. -The hot tub doesn't have any head rests nor any stairs to get in and out of it. I used a chair to do so. -Not secluded, you have neighbors and along a road. **This cabin is meant for two people only**

My wife and I stayed here for three nights for our 38th anniversary in Sept. 17,18, and 19 2016. We look for cabins generally that are pet friendly as we frequently take our two dogs along with us. I know, we're pathetic I understand that. Back to my review. The lot that this cabin sets on is absolutely beautiful. Great adult pine trees in the front, and a beautiful view in the back of a rolling hill, huge woods, animal life and seculision. The cabin on the out side is very rustic looking and at this time of the year when the nights get a little cool the lady bugs and the wasps hang anound the wood siding looking for an entry. We met the owner / manager / maid of the cabin when we arrived and he informed us that he had just finished using a type of bug repellant on the cabin exterior and that would help keep the pasky insects from ruining our vacation. Upon entering right away you could tell this place could use a little TLC. There were fake trees and plants in pots which looked nice but had a lot of dust on them. There were about 5 or 6 wasps flying around in the ceiling near the top of the "A" frame's skylights trying to stay warm and lady bugs in every room. Normally when we stay in a cabin that is pet friendly, that means don't expect a lot of updates and this cabin was no exception. It was built in the late 1970's and it still had some of that eras wallpaper on the wall. The living room furniture was very nice but it was probably 10 or 15 years old. The bed rooms were well appointed but the furniture was showing its age. The kitchen had all of the standard cabin utinsils... nothing matched including plates and bowls. Like all cabins we visit and I'm sure like most people do, we leave extra kitchen gadgets for the for the next guests. Back to the wasps and lady bugs. We turned down the AC to 64 degrees to keep the wasps and lady bugs from flying. The next morning we found them on the floor. We swept them up and threw them outside. The owner had stated that that the area was having a big issue with lady bugs. The cabin is secluded as stated earlier but there is still a reminder that civilization is less then a half mile away to the right of us. Commerce, motorcycles, and cars can be heard in the distance. What is nice is a town called Logan is fairly close which was nice for dining and shopping. One of the more interesting things to note as i stated above off of the back yard, there is a rolling hill and woods. We hiked down the hill, through the woods and up the otherside of the hill and took pictures of the cabin which was probably a half mile way from us. The view was incredible and it was a lifetime of pictures and memories. Hocking hills is always beatiful this time of year and this fall time was no different. We had a great time in hiking, shopping, dining and being amazed at the beauty of the Hocking Hills region. I'm not sure if we'll stay here again. The cabin could definitely use some upgrades but the views are extraordinary.

    Garbage left behind the couch.

For those who want the short version: This place is an awesome place to stay for a vacation get…read moreaway for a large group! Here's the detailed version: The house is located in Hocking Hills and is the perfect place for a large group of people! There are 3 floors with 8 bedrooms and 11 beds. The top floor is a loft that has 2 beds. There are 4 bedrooms on the main floor- 3 that have 1 bed, and 1 room that has full sized bunk beds. On the bottom floor, there are 3 bedrooms- 2 rooms that have 1 bed and 1 room that has bunk beds. Note: all the beds are queen/full sized beds even the bunk beds so the house could potentially sleep 22 people. The house is a beautiful lodge with hardwood floors (don't forget to take slippers!). There are 2 kitchens which was a bonus when cooking for a large group! There are also 2 dining room tables (one on the main floor, one downstairs) and 2 living room spaces. The house has 4 bathrooms (2 on each floor). Note: If you go there with a lot of people, try to be one of the first to take a shower because the hot water DOES run out if everyone is taking consecutive showers. When you go, towels (including beach towels) and linens/blankets are provided. They also provide some toilet paper and soap (dish soap, shampoo, etc) which was enough for a 2 day stay but if you're staying for the whole week, you may need to bring more. In the kitchen, you can find plates, silverware, some pots and pans, cups. They have some cooking utensils like spatulas, ladles, can opener, etc. They have a coffee maker and filters but if you like fresh coffee beans, you have to bring your own coffee grinder. There are 2 TVs there which both have DVD players and direct TV but they don't have HDMI connections so you can't hook up an Xbox. There's no wi-fi and you probably won't be able to get good cell phone service while there. But they do have corn hole, scrabble, taboo and a couple decks of cards for game night! It was actually great to get away from technology i.e. internet, etc and enjoy time with the family. In order to get there, you have to drive on some country roads- some that look like they are only one lane so I recommend trying to get there before dark just because it's so hard to see when it's night time. Also on the website, they recommend 4 wheel drive which I totally agree with! You have to drive up this steep gravel/stone driveway. One of our cars was a sedan and had trouble getting up the entire way. If you don't have 4WD, you can still make it up (although if it may be a problem if it's snowing) but try driving in reverse. Our larger cars (mini SUVs/Vans that didn't have 4WD) had problems going up driving forward, but were able to make it up in reverse. Again, it's a lot easier driving up in reverse during the day than at night. The contact person is Theresa. She was quick to respond to questions we had about the place via email. I didn't really have much contact with her since someone else dealt with the reservation but she seemed nice when I met her when we checked out of the lodge.

My female relatives (aunts, cousins, and grandmother) and I came to Hocking Hills to reunite after an incredibly long time without seeing or hugging each other. It was a little strange when the owner of the property mentioned THREE different times in one message not to follow GPS, but instead, use her directions. The oddities continued as she insisted to be there when we arrived to greet us since none of us had experienced this with a VRBO rental prior to this getaway. But the neuroses of the ownership finally smacked us straight in the face when we realized that greeting was simply to walk us through the rules. Many, many rules. Complete with a binder left for your reading pleasure and a condescending lecture from the owner to a group of adult women. There were 13 of us ranging in age from 29 to 88, but it really didn't matter who we were. Jesus Christ could have walked in with his 12 disciples and she would have asked him to make sure he showered before entering the hot tub. Her tone was both rude and insulting. Things we were warned of during her tirade, lest we be charged additional fees: Do not eat, drink, or sleep on the sofas. If you are going to sleep on the pillows, remove the pillow shams and use the pillowcases in the closets. Do not leave the coffee maker plugged in when not in use. Do not move the furniture. Do not get in the hot tub without showering. Do not leave any loose trash without bagging it. This includes boxes that are too big for bags. After leaving the property, we were informed that we left loose trash, which is an outright fabrication, clearly designed to offer a "reason" for additional charges. We were meticulously cleaning the entire cabin all morning to be sure to reach her satisfaction and even cut down all boxes so that they would fit into trash bags and not be considered "loose". One of the comments by the owner was that she was forced to empty the trash can and rebag it because there was loose trash and it was unsanitary. Speaking of unsanitary, you are asked not to strip the beds when leaving the property so they can "inventory" (AKA look for things to forfeit your security deposit) the linens. We did have our suspicions on the motive of the owner when one of my aunts pulled her blankets back on the first night and found a hair on the sheets. We were also told to wash the dishes used and then put them away. I am not a health inspector, but every place I've ever rented has either asked to load and run the dishwasher but leave the dishes in there or just load it and not run it. I suspect this is so that the renters do not then touch the clean dishes to put them away, but what would an unsanitary person like myself know about health codes? Interested in keeping your loved ones posted while haphazardly moving furniture and sleeping on sofas in a cabin in the woods? No problem! There is a landline that allows you to hear a couple of syllables at a time, which is enough to ensure that your spouse is ta.....car......tom..... And if that is not enough contact, the owner does offer the use of her personal Wifi for a small fee of $5/day in cash only. No exact change? No problem there either! Just give her the next bill you've got higher than the total and she'll call it even! It was blatantly clear with each warning of impending charges for things like spotty wifi and sleeping on pillow shams that the goal here was to come up with some failure to abide so that we could lose our security deposit and wring out any spare change we had for things like communicating with important people in our lives. But wait...there's more! The wifi doesn't work half the time and the TV in the main living space doesn't work either, which I guess is okay since who wants to watch television without the snacks and beverages that are strictly forbidden on the living room furniture. Anyway, the cabin was beautiful and there were lots of towels and beds and bathrooms and two kitchens. Those things were great. We had an amazing time because we are an amazing group of women, but it was a shame that every single one of us walked away saying, "this weekend was perfect if it hadn't been for that horrible owner." Perhaps if someone is that neurotic and paranoid, they might seek a different line of work than allowing strangers to use their property to enjoy themselves. If you want a place that limits your freedoms and puts rules on your fun, this is the cabin for you. Otherwise, run to the closest Red Roof Inn, because I bet the people there are at least welcoming.

It has 8 bedrooms (15 total beds), 4 full baths, 25+ acres, hot tub, internet and DirecTV with a 120 inch theater with surround sound, roulette table, card table, pool table and Foosball table in the basement, volleyball court, in-ground heated pool, built-in grill, (bring your own propane) built-in bar, corn hole, horse shoes and access to 160 acres of hiking. You have to provide your own firewood, but they have delivery services available. The cabin is about a 20 minute drive from some of the attractions at Hocking Hills State Park. We always make a drive over to Old Man's Cave for some scenic hiking. Check it out! They also have zip lining and horseback riding close by, but we have yet to try that out. The Meadows gets booked up pretty quick, so we usually need to reserve it a year in advance. We usually reserve it for early spring and for 3 nights and it usually comes out to around $1700. When divided amongst our usual group of 17 or so people, it's really reasonable. Late spring and summer rates can almost double in cost, so we find this time of the year the best deal. We can't justify paying that much more just to have the pool open! If you have a large group or a smaller one, book the Meadows Lodge or any of the smaller cabins in the area for a great time in Hocking Hills!
