We had a Foodie card for $10 off a $40 purchase, so we decided to give Smokehouse 734 a try…read more We arrived between 6:30 and 7 on Sat evening. We were seated right away. Menu looked decent with various food choices, full bar, numerous tvs playing different things; so we thought a good food experience was in the making. We ordered ribs (1/3 rack) with a half salad $18.98 and the rib combo with brisket and baked sweet potato $26.98. A couple years ago, I was in the Houston TX area for a couple months and I was introduced to Texas BBQ - I fell in love with a particular BBQ restaurant in Spring TX. Meat there is always, juicy and fall-off-the-bone tender and is only open until they run out of BBQ meats for the day (which usually happens on a daily basis). Sadly, Smokehouse 734 didn't even come close on the expectations I had for good BBQ in the Toledo area. The Brisket didn't even look like it was smoked - no bark on the meat at all, no truly define smoke ring, and the fat cap / meat was almost cool to the touch. Usually when brisket is smoked properly and you pick up a slice, it will bend with the juices dripping. This was not the case at Smokehouse 734. The brisket portion was 2 slices that barely covered a slice of bread. My serving of ribs still had the silver skin attached and had to work to get the meat off the bone - not able to pull the bone out of the meat. Ribs were a tad bit warmer than the brisket, but definitely not fresh off the smoker by any means. Cornbread was a bit dry (crumbly) but had a decent flavor. With all this said, probably the best part of my meal was the baked sweet potato at the ala carte price of $4.99. My search for a legit BBQ restaurant in NW Ohio / SE Michigan continues...

The brisket taco's were good I would say 5 out of 10, my husband said 7 or 8 out of 10, the only thing I didn't understand with that was the huge portion of tortilla chips that were under the big chips laid small pieces like they came from the end of the bag. They were just there looking at you like eat me. I was looking at them like hell nah you're dry AF.

I had tried to make a reservation for a party of two, but was told they only take reservations for larger groups. I was advised to arrive between 5pm-5:30pm on a Saturday evening to avoid a wait. We arrived at 5:30pm and were promptly seated. The ambiance here is very casual and comfortable. Our server promptly came by to take our drink orders and give us menus. We were also provided with complimentary biscuits that were very good, though not as warm as we would have liked. I ordered the honey-BBQ salmon with green beans and mac 'n cheese. My friend ordered a burger. Food was served in an appropriate amount of time. My salmon was perfectly grilled and seasoned. The green beans were plentiful and deliciously fresh. The macaroni and cheese was a bit disappointing but not bad. It came in a small container and all I could see initially was a cream sauce; once I put my fork in, I discovered the macaroni. We had a nice evening and service was casually excellent- which is the vibe of the restaurant. I would definitely return and recommend Shorty's True American Roadhouse!

The bread was nicely toasted, the meat had a good smoky flavor without being overpowering, and it stayed tender. The colorful sauce selection was different and actually really good. Overall, it felt worth the price and the atmosphere. Now for the downsides, because every review needs a complaint section. The coleslaw is hit or miss, so I'd get it on the side. The sauces also have a fruit twist, which isn't for everyone, but I liked them. The fries are the standard crispy, golden style. I'd personally prefer something more homemade. Portion size is good--bigger than a single serving, but not over the top like a five gallon bucket that everyone wants. My main issue, and I've only been once, is the smash burger. The name is misleading. I expected to see a thin smashed patty, but it was more like a regular double patty burger. One thing I'd like to see is posting the smoking dates for the meat, so you know what might affect flavor on different days. But that's just my first impression. Overall, I'd definitely go back.
