Really the best bartenders I've ever seen! Massive crowds turning over constantly and nobody waited for anything. We had a tab and easily ordered with hand signals when they made eye contact which was nearly constant. These days so many people working in hospitality don't know anything about making eye contact with their customers but at the Stage they were the most professional, efficient, skilled team I've ever seen! The bands were good. Not really up to the same standard as some of the other places we saw but they were fun and the crowds loved them. It's a decent sized room and the turnover between bands was efficient and they played decent music in between so the good times just kept rolling! We stopped in here during our brief visit to Nashville. We were walking down the street admiring and taking in all the country bars. Every single bar had live music blasting and I suggested this place because the music was not at an unbearable volume. We also wanted a place that was not packed wall to wall with people. Upon walking inside, we discovered it was almost as busy as all the other places we passed. I decided to check upstairs for seating and to gain an idea of the environment. Luckily, there was a couple of seats but unfortunately that it was next the stairs so people constantly bumped into us. Cool though-there was a second bar upstairs! Hubs and I like to try local beers when traveling so we ordered some beers, sat down, and enjoyed the music. I never listened to country music until I moved to FL and so over the years, I have come to appreciate the genre a little more. The band was playing cover songs but from what I can remember, there was not only country music playing. Door guy stopped us, sneered at us & said condescendingly, "First of all, you can go right back over there and pick those drinks up, those are trash and throw them away." My wife explained that we were coming back for them and that the other establishments had us just set them down at the door before entering. He said, "WELL, YOU DIDN'T ASK ME IF YOU COULD BRING THOSE DRINKS IN." I'm 52 years old & have never been treated like that. He only got more rude from there. Plenty of space downstairs to dance and there is a small balcony to have a private area. A few of us decided to take a self guided scooter tour from Bearded Iris back to our place in the South area of Nashville. We planned to make a couple stops and when we hit broadway, we needed a watering hole ASAP. Luckily we rolled into Whiskey Bent and got a few seats at the bar. It was early afternoon so it wasn't super crowded. This definitely worked in our favor because the two piece duo was amazing and once they really got going the bar started to fill up quickly. Like most locals, I generally can't with Lower Broad honky tonks. They can be too much. They can really play to a tourist element (understandable). They can be unbearably crowded. They can be a lot. So, I, like most locals, avoid them... until I have friends in town. And, then I go... and try and choose the least painful option. On my last go 'round Downtown, I found myself trying to figure out where to go on a Wednesday evening. The day of the week didn't have much effect on the crowd situation, so I turned to experience and Yelp. I wanted to go somewhere I'd never been. I also wanted to go somewhere well-reviewed. Whiskey Bent, tonight was your night. At the risk of telling all my secrets, I tend to go straight back and upstairs when entering a Lower Broad honky tonk. Not seeing a staircase and not recalling reading about one, I stayed put up front so as not to make an ass of myself looking for a second level that wasn't there. Even though it wasn't Sunday, there were plenty of people dancing -- mostly tourists. That said, everyone was good-natured. The bar was split between onlookers, women who knew every country line dance (and song), a group of men from Canada with a penchant for... uncomfortable bending and touching, and me & my friend. A motley crew, to be sure, but one that shows WB is open to all kinds. The band was fantastic. It was a four piecer with the female lead vocalist showing a vast range of musical ability and a deft hand at working the crowd. So often I get frustrated at the amount of raw talent one can hear throughout this city and who won't get their fair shot at stardom while the radio is full of no talent hacks. The entertainment business isn't fair. Back to WB: I stood at the edge of the bar, nursing a weak Jack & Coke (point deducted for that) and marveled at the ability for the band to turn on a dime. They were playing requests and went from country to rock to soul to pop. They never missed a beat. I spend a lot of time grousing about traffic, crowds and woo-hoo girls when I go to Lower Broad. It took me spending some time at Whiskey Bent to remember that Nashville is home to really incredible musicians who ply their trade at the same bars locals (tend to) overlook. We should do better. I should do better. I'll be back to Whiskey Bent... but I'm going to want a better-made drink. read more

I was supposed to be walking back to the hotel. I was seduced by a saxophone, as one is. Rarely have I heard saxophone on Broadway, so I took a chance and went in. It has that divey feel but turns out, it seems like Sunday nights are unofficial social swing dancing nights at Whiskey Bent. A phenomenal band playing *real* country music (not the pop stuff), and fun-as-all-get-out swing dancers hanging out. If you're looking for where the locals hang out, this is it. I had a fantastic time, the dancers recognized right away that I wanted to dance. Everyone is so friendly, right down to the bouncer. I loved the various whiskey-themed art on the walls. Everyone packed up around 10:30pm to head to Robert's Western World, so I followed suit. I can't wait to come back. read more
