When Pigs Fly is a must stop when you're in the area of Athens, GA. Situated in the charming town of Monroe, it is the quintessential bbq spot. Old fashioned interior, and a simple yet extremely satisfying menu! The Turkey Plate was outstanding! I paired it with the sweet and spicy bbq sauces. Just the meat alone, was enough! Two sides come with the plate, and the macaroni and cheese, and side salad were deeelish! Last but not least, this spot is run by the nicest folks you could find. Friendly, smiling, and serving up amazing food with a Southern twinkle in their eyes! Five stars...BOOM! There it is!

Cute spot downtown Monroe. We stopped in for lunch wanting to try the BBQ since seeing the great reviews. Upon entering, we were greeted by a high-school boy probably working there on a school program. Thought that it was great that they were doing that for our kids. After he brought out our silverware and drinks he left and we had another girl come take our orders. We got the fried pickles appetizer. I got the pulled chicken since they didn't have any regular chicken available that day. My husband got the combination with ribs, fatty brisket, and pulled pork. We also chose sides of brunswick stew, potato salad, baked beans, and mac n cheese. Fried pickles came out first. Perfectly crispy and hot. My pulled chicken was moist and tender. Had some flavor. Smoke was very mild and almost nonexistent. Great with the mustard base sauce, which happened to be my favorite. I don't usually order pulled chicken but they didnt have their regular chicken available and we wanted to try all their proteins. I wouldn't order it again. I really enjoyed the brunswick stew though and the baked beans I prefer over what I've had before at most places. Not too sweet and not mush. The other proteins we had were all bbqd well. All tender, seasoned and salted. Though the smoke was a little stronger than the chicken but it wasn't too strong. As expected when using pellet smokers. Granted you can still get a good smoke using pellets (we own one as well and use it sometimes for a quick controlled smoke) but it's def not the same as a traditional wood smoke.

Delish brisket, pork, green beans, and slaw.

Truly awesome Q. They do their brisket and pork perfectly. Not a fan of the sweet BBQ sauce. But the spicy makes up for it. (It's not too spicy.) Clean facilities. Friendly service. This place is worth a long detour to visit.

Ordered pork plates with potato salad, Brunswick stew, and fried okra. The BBQ was so good , I used very little to no sauce. BBQ was warm and tender. I added some of the BBQ to the stew to make it even better.

First time visiting and was impressed by the BBQ goodness. Wife had the pulled pork sandwich and you can see from the photo the pork was piled high. I had the brisket plate with cole slaw and brunswick stew. The brisket serving size was generous with a mixture of lean and fatty. The sides were tasty. The sweet bbq sauce was very good. Amber our server was awesome. She helpful, funny and attentive. Prices are very fair so I can see why this place was hoping on a Saturday at lunch time. Had the opportunity to say hey the owner Kevin as he was putting on some meat on the smokers. If you near Monroe and want come hood BBQ, be sure to check out spot in downtown Monroe.

Pretty good barbecue. The wait time for to-go is a little longer than I'm used to, but still not long enough to make me stay away.

The food is good, but they close way too early! No wonder Monroe has no nightlife!! You'll find me in Winder or Athens....

The food truck arrived and they set up quickly and efficiently. Yes, you could smell the wonderful grill going and the food did not disappoint. We had the bone-in chicken and pulled pork and it was tender and good! We had mac n chees, baked beans and brunswick stew, as our sides and they were also delish! Edee himself, was out at our event and he was kind, pleasant and efficient. (BTW, thank you for your service ~ Semper Fi!). His crew "D" and Tammy were pleasant and just wonderful to work with. We plan to use them again for another event. Thank you for the great food and great service!!!!

Welp, Yelp. This is an ordinary, at best, barbecue stand. We finally got to try them today and…read morebefore I blather on, I will say, I don't know if we'll bother them again. We definitely won't use it as a destination type barbecue purveyor. And they're in the neighborhood. The quality of the food is good. The method they use to quantify the amount of food they present you is sorry, at best. The customer service was bland, borderline....sullen. Maybe, they were having a bad day. And I spent almost $100 for a selection of items. The easiest way for me to present our experience is through pros and cons. And here we go.... PROS: 1. Some of the best chopped pork, we've ever had. It was the perfect blend of fat to lean, moist, smokey and no cartilage, gristle or bone. 2. The ribs were fairly meaty, cooked very well and slightly smokey. You could see a definite smoke line. The seasoning was decent. 3. The Brunswick Stew had discernable components. It didn't look like a can of mushed up dog food with corn kernels in it. I usually don't care for Brunswick Stew, but I liked this. It is fairly spicey. I liked that. 4. The hot barbecue sauce was much better than the regular. It still tasted like anything you can grab off a shelf at the store. CONS: 1. Questionable way they decide what is a serving size. I paid TWENTY DOLLARS for 3/4 of a Styrofoam lunch box of chopped pork. I'm trying to post a picture. They were verrrry evasive when asked to quantify by weight, the amount of meat that you receive. Evasive....almost indignant. I wonder if this varies from customer to customer. 2. I've never, in decades, been to a barbecue joint where the cooks so purposefully and diligently AVOIDED talking with the customers. I'm a very gregarious type and these people just would not talk to me. And they weren't busy. I felt like I was an annoyance the whole time I was dropping a C note there. 3. The Cole Slaw was little more than pre-packaged, shredded cabbages and carrots, doused in sugar water. The container was barely 3/4 full. Now that I think of it........we won't be going back. They need to work on customer interaction and actually sell you their product based on genuine weights and measurements.

We've eaten here enough times that it feels less like a restaurant visit and more like part of the tradition. Tonight I ordered the Blue Plate Special with hamburger steak smothered in grilled onions, collard greens, green beans, cornbread, and a big bowl of Brunswick stew. My unsweet tea stayed filled thanks to Rhonda, who was serving tables while also managing the restaurant. We learned that Hot Rod's started the evening with three servers scheduled. Business was slow, so one server was sent home. Naturally, that's when things picked up. Even so, Rhonda and the remaining server kept everything moving smoothly, and we never felt neglected during our visit. The Brunswick stew was excellent and gave us an unexpected opportunity for comparison. Earlier in the day we had Brunswick stew at Fresh Air Bar-B-Que. Hot Rod's version was chunkier, with larger pieces of meat, more noticeable vegetables, and a slight kick of spice. The Fresh Air version was smoother and more finely blended. Both were excellent, but they were definitely different styles. The hamburger steak was flavorful, the green beans and collard greens tasted like proper Southern vegetables, and when the Texas Pete hit the table there was only one thing to say: "My man, Texas Pete goes on the collards." Then came the surprise ending. We learned that peach cobbler was half price today. Unfortunately, they were out. Or so we thought. A fresh cobbler was still in the oven. For the next several minutes, the suspense reached maximum peach. Finally, the cobbler emerged from the kitchen and was served à la mode. The French gave it a classy name. The South perfected the application. Warm peaches, a buttery cobbler topping, and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream that immediately melted with a purpose made for the perfect ending to the meal. It was absolutely worth the wait. Hot Rod's continues to be one of our favorite stops in Social Circle, and after another great meal, I have no doubt we'll be back again the next time we're in town.
