Our first visit here and not very impressed. When we arrived the parking lot was packed so I was very excited that I was going to get a great meal. My first impression was not great as we waited 10 minutes just to put our name on the list for a table. The staff member who had "the list" was also taking phone orders, getting to-go meals from the back, and taking people's payments. My husband was not happy that the phone orders took priority over the people in the restaurant. We watched people leave and watched the tables get cleared. We and another couple wondered why we were not being seated as there were tables available. The lady seating customers was busy checking out several parties and looking for to-go orders. Finally, after waiting 30 minutes (apparently we got there at the busiest time) we were seated. We ordered and our food came out pretty quickly. We both got the Wednesday special of fried chicken. I looked at mine and thought it looked overcooked, then I looked at my husband's and his was BURNT. I am very surprised they plated and sent out a piece of chicken that looked like his did. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of his. My corn muffin was hard but I was able to eat part of it. We waited for our ticket to go to the register to pay, but it never came. Finally, we just went to the register to pay. The waitress never came back to check if we needed refills (this is important to my husband as he always needs refills on his water). Definitely could have gotten a better fried chicken meal for a lesser price elsewhere. Will not go back. read more

It's was ready to pick up within 15 minutes and staff were very welcoming and friendly. The restraint has been recently updated and is clean and inviting with a lot of the unique history of this three generation family owned business. This was my second visit in a month. Great chicken tenders & onion rings. Probably best onion rings I have had. Okra, slaw & mac n cheese were great as well. My buddy always gets the fried porch chop-winner, winner. Best ranch dressing around. Nice servers. Great they opened for Monday lunch. read more

This restaurant decided to charge extra for a tiny salad as one of the sides for a meal. They reduced the size of the salad snd did not indicate on the menu, nor did the waitstaff inform us that there would now be an upcharge for the salad. When I broight this up yo the staff they indicated the owner said to charge it anyway and he would get around to printing new menus with the surcharge indicated. We can afford the surcharge, just be honest. Not returning, quality and portions have been declining. This was the last straw. read more

Cooks work here, not chefs. The food was serviceable and the tables were turning with local seniors on a Friday night. We ordered the fried breast plate--one with baked potato and salad, the other with fried okra and Mac & cheese. Everything came out hot, which is a thrill in itself. The potato was just right, with pads of butter and a packet of sour cream, but my side salad was uninspired, in a tiny bowl that kept tossing greens because there was no way to control the center of gravity unless you pinned it against the table. My wife was pleased with her Mac and the okra was acceptable. The chicken was fried and exceptionally white inside, I'm not sure how they cooked it so perfectly,but it lacked in flavor. Needed to be seasoned or salted. Instead of the corn bread we requested, we received dinner rolls, which were a bit better than expected. And for some reason my wife was served a paper cup with a tiny spice cake inside--not bad. The waitress was efficient if not quite friendly. Kind, but a little disinterested, with a flair for almost tossing the plate on the table in front of you. The ambience is Friday night diner complete with local ads under the tabletop. Many of the regulars came in for their weekly seafood dinner. We'll be back if only because I must witness more of the place. The steak sandwich looks like it might be a winner and my in-laws may be in love with Campton's. They even sold meta "Straight Outta Campton" tees that seemed more self aware than I'd give them credit for. read more

Shrimp dinner was really good. Cooked just right. Hushpuppies were old school with onions and NO sugar. They were really busy, Friday night, but service was great. Took my parents the other night (Saturday) and we sure were disappointed. The service was mediocre at best, but the real story was the food. My parents split the fried chicken and I ordered catfish with creamed corn and potato wedges. What arrived at the table, however, was a medium sized piece of very burnt fried chicken and catfish with absolutely zero seasoning. When the waitress acknowledged that the fried chicken was burnt, she offered to bring us another piece. Then she proceeded to bring out an equally burnt piece. My catfish might have been delicious, but I will never know because it never came in contact with any seasoning. No salt. No pepper. No nothing. The creamed corn was pretty good but lacked seasoning and my potato wedges came out as potato salad that was loaded with dill pickle relish. The cornbread was dry and flavorless. read more

Cute little family owned restaurant that we stopped by for lunch since we were nearby. Simple homestyle menu producing delicious eats. I ordered the fried chicken with Mac and cheese, potato salad, and green bean sides. My fried CHICKEN BREAST was cooked so perfectly that when I cut into it, it was leaking with juices. It was so satisfying. I was amazed. The mac and cheese ended up being just okay next to the potato salad. I could probably eat gallons of the potato salad which they actually ran out of while we were there and I wasn't surprised. Green beans were canned but the added bacon made them special and tasty. My husband ordered the country fried steak which to be honest he was a little disappointed in the size but it was delicious nonetheless. Next time we'll just order two steaks and there definitely will be a next time! read more

It's got a great homey atmosphere but the food is just ok. Our bbq sandwich combo meal was dry with no sauce and the cheeseburger combo meal had a tad of mustard/ ketchup and 2 slices of onions. (They forgot the cheese so they brought us a slice and put it on it.). The meat is barely warm and very dry. No real seasoning. The fries were barely warm as well. We have been here a few times now. It's the same overall. We really wanted it to be better.That's why we keep trying. I think I've given up. 27$ for 2 sandwich plates is too much for it to just be ok. And yes. We have spoken to our waitress each time. They are just young and don't seem to care. read more

Campton Restaurant is always something we look forward to, we live about 30 minutes from the restaurant but have never had a bad meal. My favorite is their fried pork chops and fried shrimp. I also love that they have french dressing for their salads and captain wafer crackers (its my favorite). My husband loves their whole catfish. The service is always friendly. It's nothing fancy but it's a place filled with good food and friendly people. Oh, and they have the best sweet tea. read more

Yesterday ( Friday about 1:15pm ) we stopped in this local restaurant which offers a classic meat and two veggies plate for about seven dollars. We discovered the place has gone downhill fast. We ordered country fried steak, creamed potatoes and broccoli cheese casserole with corn bread. The country fried steak was dry, over cooked and tough. The gravy tasted like a "paste of flour and milk" with no trace of seasoning. The potatoes were cold and bland while the casserole was nothing more than tough broccoli stems drenched in something that tasted like cold gummy cheese whiz sauce. The corn muffin was average but hard. By the way the tea tasted old and bitter. I truly wish I could use better adjectives to describe everything but if I did ... well it wouldn't be truthful. Also we noted that the service was lacking as we had to ask for butter, ice, straws... I sorry folks but it was not a pleasant dining experience. The only good thing was a small portion of a tasty spice cake. If you choose to visit this restaurant you will understand the health rating score which at 82 made a " B " grade if you look at the cleanliness of the floors, walls and crumb covered ripped chair seats which have padding protruding from the covering. The bathroom door was very dirty and I thought twice about touching it but used a paper towel in my hand to open it after washing my hands. That's about it and I truly hope this restaurant can improve so it can become the local favorite that it was in the past. read more

Homecooked food done right in a hometown environment. In other words, if you want local good food cooked like home, you found your mecca. We wandered in on a mid-late lunch/early bird hour Friday going into the holiday weekend. It was pretty dead inside, a few tables with diners but otherwise quiet. We ordered popcorn shrimp and baked potato and I had the hamburger steak with onions med rare with French fries. Because it's Campton, why not? Atmosphere - tables, chairs, big screen against a wall playing CNN/MSNBC and knick knack Americana on walls and shelves but simple. Clean and welcoming. Quite a few regulars who definitely get the family welcome - we didn't expect too much being first timers. But then again we were not dealt any bad service. Seemed quick and fast but no rudeness intended in the rush. Could be she was the only one serving the dining room this shift so was happy to be in and have hot food fast. Food- I didn't come in with super high expectations and I ordered what could be standard. Nothing fancy or with thrills or frills. Hamburger steak medium rare was definitely closer to medium well. But still good and made for a decent meal, plenty of fries and coleslaw standard. My dining partner loved the coleslaw so he had my extra. He ordered popcorn shrimp and baked potato - tons of shrimp and baked potato huge. Impressive. Overall we ordered standard and it was good. No trends or flash. Just.good.food. Overall decent food and value. Seafood a little high but I also know people like it. I think we might go back if we crave home cooking. It will be good for a good local meal. read more

I eat here twice a week, and they're only open four days a week. Sometimes I go all four days. My ONLY complaint is I wish they offered vegetables for dinner. At dinner the only sides you can get are fries, onion rings, or baked potato. Lunch is the real treat. A meat, two veg, a roll or cornbread, and a small dessert for something ridiculously cheap like $6.00. I'm always working during the day, so I go for dinner. Everything here is good, but my favorites are as follows: the Brunswick stew, the hamburger steak, the popcorn shrimp, or...THE FRIED CHICKEN. I cannot stress this one enough. It's half a freaking chicken, pan fried to perfection. If you like seafood, they have that too. I don't eat catfish on the bone, but it seems to be the most popular. This restaurant has been owned by the same couple for 30 years. Both of them still come into work on a daily basis and greet customers, despite their years. The wife still makes the daily special dessert, which is offered in addition to the staple desserts on the menu (the meringue is two inches high!). THIS is the kind of place food critics dream about! We started walking in and, not knowing anything about the place whatsoever, I asked a group leaving "What do they have good inside?". The response was clear "Catfish". I was ready! Bring it! When we stepped inside, we went through a time warp. This place hadn't changed in forty years. If you are under 40 or have a BMI of under 40, you're going to feel really out of place initially. We were definitely among the younger set and there were quite a few guys seated that made me feel rather svelte. After a short wait we were seated. It took longer for our server to make initial contact but hey, these folks are busy! Let me tell you, they are serving up a bunch of food in this place. I was able to take one picture inside before I started getting the evil eye. Melanie and I remarked that we really had traveled back in time. People were actually sitting at the table talking with one another rather than everyone having their face glued to their phone. What kind of place was this? Needless to say, I was a little scared to start snapping pictures of food because it seemed awkward and out of place. Melanie ordered the Shrimp Plate and I ordered the Seafood Platter. We had gotten salads as one of our sides and ordered a baked potato for another. When our meals arrived, I could not believe the portion size we received. You will not leave hungry from Campton Restaurant. We weren't thrilled with the salads. It was just iceberg lettuce, but the dressings were good and really the main thing here is the entreé. My Seafood Platter consisted of oysters, shrimp, scallops, deviled crab and perch. I declined the oysters for additional shrimp and upgraded to the tilapia. It's all fried and you can't get it any other way. There are a few items on the menu that are available grilled or broiled but not many. Melanie and I both thought the shrimp was outstanding. Lightly breaded and perfected prepared with no tails it was absolutely delightful. I love cocktail sauce while Melanie shuns it and prefers tartar sauce. The cocktail sauce tasted homemade and has a spectacular kick to it that makes me think there's something more than just horseradish in there. The scallops were small but juicy and didn't taste gritty (an indicator of cheap scallops that haven't been cleaned properly). The deviled crab was the show stealer. Stuffed high out of the shell, the flavor was out of this world. This is a must-have when you visit Campton Restaurant. By the time I got to the tilapia I was about full. Somehow though, I persevered and was able to finish it off. Melanie didn't have as much luck with her plate and left three shrimp stranded whom I rescued by finishing them off. When the server came to check if we wanted dessert, we both realized that was out of the question and we just needed to sit for a while before we left. By the way, the dessert was peach cobbler with ice cream for $2.50. When you come to the Campton Restaurant, don't bother looking for the sign - there isn't one. Instead, look for the most cars parked by Hwy 11 just north of Monroe and be prepared to experience some awesome, cheap seafood and fish. Guten appetit! read more

Great place. I love their steaks and their desserts are wonderful. Warning: do not get there after 8:45pm. They will not serve you. I got there at 8:55. I read where they were open till 9:30. I drove about 30 minutes out of the way and they wouldn't serve me. Great place!!! read more
