Went for lunch a few days ago and it was just okay. The service is a bit lacking and not very friendly. The restaurant is clean and decorated nicely. The food lacks flavor and was just okay. I ordered the hot dog lunch and the chili was flavorless. The menu advertises an all beef hot dog, I believe they aren't all beef. My partner got a chicken salad sandwich. The wheelhouse is such a cute restaurant. I came here with a friend and there was plenty of space. We both ordered the bacon lettuce, turkey and mayo grilled sandwich and it was delicious. This was a busy and bustling place. Two hot dogs, chips, and a drink were $9.90, which isn't bad for the Charleston area. The hot dogs were nice and neat, and the establishment was clean. You could taste the meat in the chili, which I like. It can be very pasty. You could tell this chili didn't come from a can. The slaw was fine and not chunky, which I also liked. The taste of the slaw was very subtle. The chili overpowered the slaw's taste a bit. It could have been a tad sweeter to give the hot dogs more of a contrast in taste. However, the slaw had a nice flavor on it's own. I tasted the slaw separately to savor the full flavor. I'd definitely come back. read more

Always friendly, always delicious. Wheel House has been a regular for me for years. I can't recommend them enough.

We're visiting Charleston and found this restaurant. We got a carryout for 3 sandwiches and all had pumpernickel. The food inside the sandwiches were great BUT the bread on all 3 were stale and crumbled as we ate the sandwiches. Very disappointing. I'm guessing since we're just past the holiday it was last week's pumpernickel. read more

This truly is one of the cleanest restaurants I have ever been in. The staff is super friendly and it's locally owned! These factors alone give it 4.5 stars! My favorite menu item is the chicken salad or pimento spread on toasted sourdough! I have trouble deciding which I like better. It's a nice little place to get a quick sandwich an' soup. My sandwich, the Maddox (turkey, corned beef, an' pepperoni with provolone an' banana peppers) was panini-style an' pretty tasty. The "bowl" of potato soup (large cup) wasn't all that hot, but tasted good an' ate just fine. It was full of potatoes, bacon bits an' cheddar cheese. All served with a dill spear an' your choice of chips or coleslaw. I had the chips an' fountain diet-Coke. I finished off my sister's chicken salad sandwich on Pumpernickel an' my daughter's Reuben on Rye. Both were good, but unremarkable. The staff was friendly an' eager to serve even though we got there late. The total was a bit pricey for what ya got but not bad for the area. read more

First time visiting this restaurant. I wanted some hot soup! I looked at other reviews and the menu first and decided to give it a shot. I got the Steamboat sandwich, chips, chicken gumbo, sweet tea, and peanut butter pie. The sandwich was OK, not the best I've ever had, but I liked the combination of ingredients. It made for a tasty turkey sandwich. The gumbo is what I want to focus on. It was the soup of the day. I was expecting a thick, chunky gumbo with shreds of chicken thighs, rice, onions...you know, a GUMBO! Growing up in GA, then moving to MS has made me quite the connoisseur of gumbo, lol. Let's just say their gumbo left a lot to be desired. Not thick at all. Pretty sure the chicken was from a can, there was hardly any rice, and there was a TON of okra. The broth did have a great flavor and even a little kick, but it definitely shouldn't be called a gumbo. I didn't like the pie...something about the texture of the filling turned me off. The tea was really good. Freshly brewed. Overall, the food is OK. I would go back and try other menu items. read more

Delicious soups and salads. I love their tabouli. I usually get in and out quick for take out of my lunch. It's only a few minutes drive from my office near the Capital. Today I just had the creamy potato kale soup with tabouli on the side. Freshest and best tabouli in town and the soup was very tasty. They always have great soups such as spicy cabbage, shrimp and corn chowder, spicy beef fajita, broccoli and cheese, tomato basil, etc. Last week they had a smoked salmon BLT and a turkey avocado and chipotle ranch lettuce wrap that were to die for. Great traditional favorites with a twist and their own unique and creative concoctions. Always some of the best soups in Charleston, and fast if you're taking out. read more

Have been visiting my hometown of Charleston, WV much more recently because my parents are growing old, etc., etc. I have always loved and embraced WV's unique and particular hot dog culture, and "The Wheel" as my mother and her aged girlfriends refer to it, is our closest WV hotdog option, but has fallen short the last two visits, even though they were three months apart. The visit in April or May when I was charged to get dogs for three elderly ladies long familiar with "The Wheel" dogs, was rewarded by super stale buns at both ends, and were basically inedible. Now that my mother is bedbound she had me go get "Wheel Dogs" yesterday, and while the buns were fresher, they were dry and any real WV hot dog has a steamed bun. This review is based on researching WV hot dog culture (They are mentioned on You Tube as a good HD spot), and as a former Charlestonian I remember walking to Chris' as a 5 yr old child on the West Side on hot dog runs to get perhaps the greatest WV hot dogs ever . Upon my visit the restaurant was full, of lots of people enjoying soups, salads and sandwiches, and those items may be great, but if you're a hot dog loving tourist like me, you gotta look elsewhere for a good WV dog. read more

Recently my wife and I stopped by for breakfast and may I say it was outstanding. I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. It was anything but ordinary. The biscuit was perfectly made and and so flavorful and the bacon was real bacon and crispy. Everything about it was outstanding. The restaurant was extremely clean and more importantly the staff was unbelievably friendly and professional. This is now a go to place for me when I travel to Charleston in the future. Tucked away in South Hills is a cute and friendly sandwich shop. Its nautical theme reminds you that the river and the stern wheelers aren't that far away. Ate there on Friday. The food was great, enjoyed our sandwiches and would like to give the soups a try but the staff I interacted with where not the friendliest. I'm unsure if this had to do with a stressful work day or what but it wasn't a welcoming atmosphere at all, I don't expect over the top joyfulness but I don't want to feel like I did something wrong by being there either.
