As a commuter who drives to Charleston every day from Intercourse, PA, it's not uncommon for me to get hungry every time I set foot in the city. I spend $600 per week on petrol. My flat buttocks feels even flatter than it did last February, so I plump it up by ordering barbecue from Bogey's, which was fine to say the least. The Lay's potato chips really shined, though. I'd come back just to get those crisps in my belly again. I enjoy perusing the overpriced produce and meat sections -- laughing inside that I can get fake organic alternatives at the German grocery store chain called Aldi. I always give the lotion guy the smug face when I try the free samples and never purchase anything. I'll be back once somebody repairs that tattered up piano that stinks up the walkway leading up to the pub. read more

I am drawn to a local market like a moth to a flame, or mosquito to a outdoor light (depending on your choice of metaphor). It is always the perfect spot to observe a snapshot of the local area, interact with passionate business owners, definitely pick up some food-drinks-produce-etc., and almost always see a historic building/structure (for example, this one is in a old train depot). After visiting Charleston Bread (see my review for them via their Yelp page) I continued walking and found this beautiful place just around the corner. I was already carrying bread, cookies, cake, books, and more but I knew I could find room for more if needed. And find I did. Plants, crafts, peppers, jams, vegetables, pies, and a brewery. And let me add, this was around mid day. There were some in-door vendors (including the restaurant) that wasn't open. I can only imagine what this place is like when fully open and people are everywhere. I saw a schedule that included family events, live music, and more. Aka, this is a community gathering place. And shouldn't all local markets be that? read more

On a trip through Charleston WV I knew we would be needing to find a lunch spot and had scouted out the Capitol Market ahead of time and it turned es out to be the perfect to place to get out off he car for a bit, stretch our legs and get some food! In the downtown area, and just off the ugh way the Capitol Market had plenty of parking and is in a really neat a lot that used to be a train station! We began walking around the outside area which was filled with a ton of vendors like your typically farmers market and at the time there even happened to be a children's cooking competition going on! After some strolling we made our way inside where there were more vendors, some more permanent lot established spots and a few places to get food! We did get a couple little items from some of the artisan places and I took a look through their wine shop which had a really great selection. Finally we grabbed some food, my wife went to Bogey's which has all sorts of American food, while I went to the Sushi restaurant, then we met up outside where there were lots of tables and chairs in the shade where you could eat. This warehouse is open seven days a week. Parking is a bit cramped, perhaps because the signs saying that it's for visitors to the market only are unenforced, and it is an easy walk to a variety of other downtown areas. The exterior offered a wide variety of plants for sale, mostly for decorating your house, but there was a farmer's market as well. I didn't find any ramps but it's probably a bit late for them. The interior housed a number of specialty markets and a cafe and restaurant. Some stuff was quite pricey but it varied, and the selection was full of things that I suspect aren't easy to find in West Virginia. So it definitely struck me as a place worth at least taking a look at. read more

Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and this market was hopping. There is a large outside covered area and also an inside area. The outdoor market consisted of plants for sale along with a homemade ice cream stand and lots of fresh produce. The prices were moderate. The inside market consisted of small shops selling fresh meats, local canned items, a wine shop, coffee store, kitchen supply stand etc. At one end there was a full service Italian restaurant. It's a very nice stop and right off the highway. read more

Capitol Market in Charleston is so great. It's Thad big city feel of a market right in downtown. In an old historic building that is nice and warm in the winter. And has so much to offer with some amazing merchants. They've got grocers, eateries (seafood, meat, sandwiches, Italian, sushi, chocolates, coffee bar, even wine and cheese shop), plus local artisan products representing the WV. And in the summer it gets bigger with outdoor merchants galore. This is an incredible market, they done a great job with the layout. If it could be any better, I just wish it was bigger. There are places to sit and eat, enjoy the free Wi-Fi and have a meeting, study, read or work. It's a very inviting atmosphere. I see the Capitol Market only becoming better and better. It's a first class destination right in the heart of downtown Charleston. Come and enjoy, you'll be stoked you did. read more

The kind of place where you can browse for a few hours and get some gift shopping done or a few things for yourself. It was very busy while we were there and the walking aisle and the lines to purchase items get kinda intermixed and everyone gets in everyone's way, if ya feel me, but everyone was very nice in this crowded spot. read more

Yes I love the Capitol Market and all of the fragrant and beautiful flowers. Whenever I am unhappy, depressed or just a little blue I can park free and walk through the outside area with all the plants, fruits and veggies and flowers and get a quick pick me up. Not sure if it is the herbs or the flowers but I love the aroma and fragrances that make me smile and almost want to skip...lol This is a lovely old train depot in Charleston that when I was a child growing up in the area was abandoned and just falling apart and they remodeled and developed into a lovely shopping area and inside some lovely restaruants. It is rather small compared to larger cities especially since this is the capitol of the entire state. My favorite two shops inside are Johnny's Meat Market that's been around since I was a child also but in another location. There is also the Purple onion which is fresh produce market and sandwich shop. It is free parking and a lovely way to spend an hour or so. read more

Mediocre pork bun. However, the water fountain? Perfect. The pressure had been meticulously adjusted, so that the water's arc nearly but not quite went over the edge, providing a perfect experience entirely free from the attempt to make out with the nozzle which is unfortunately so common among water fountains. Holl's Chocolate originated in Parkersburg, WV and eventually built their own factory and store front in Vienna, WV. Cute little market in downtown Charleston, WV. I was driving through West Virginia and was looking for a pepperoni roll. Being that it was Sunday the 2 places that I want to go to was closed. So I ended up here. Nice place to get fruits, vegetables, flowers and products from West Virginia. I found a pepperoni roll they were nice enough to warm it up for me. Plus I got those Buckeyes chocolates that you can only find in this region. Everyone was very friendly and nice. Next time I get some other stuff. read more

So I couldn't pass up the Capital Market while in Charleston! Located right off I-77, Capital Market is an inside market with various stores under one roof. If you have an interest in fresh produce, snacks, hot lunch, a neat meat market, wine shopping or just having a great dinner with friends and family, then you have made a great decision to come here. The market includes the following small vendor stores: *Purple Onion *Johnnies Fresh Meat Market *Sushi *The Wine Shop *CoffeeBaR AND; *Hollis Chocolates The capital market is located near a former train station. I'm sure during the summertime, the platforms shelter make for good local produce sellers. But indoors they are open all year round. My favorites stores inside where the Purple Union, which is really good for buying delicious fresh produces, flowers, and organic snacks, the wine shop with all their different variety of wines and craft beer, and honestly, who could resist the yummy chocolates from Hollis? At the end of the market, there is Soho's which is a really nice restaurant. Overall, this is a very fun place to check out if you are around the area. The capital market is a old train station turned into a downtown market. Much like has been done in other cities. The market offers a verity if retailers offering speciality goods. You can grab your veggies and dry goods from the Purple onion, your protein from Johnnys meat market, seafood from the Seafood market, and your wine or beer, and cfrom the Wine Shop. Oh and don't forget those chocolates for desert from the chocolate place. If your feeling WV made products there is a place for that as well. Or you can eat some fine cuisine at SoHo's restaurant on the end. If your looking for something a little less expensive the seafood market will fry up some of the best fish and chips around these parts. Or maybe grab some sushi from one of the other places. If coffee or tea is your thing, it's here as well. I'm sure I left some of the wonderful offerings of the market out but not on purpose. I love how they left the interior brick exposed to give it that old market feel. During the summer the outside is buzzing with local farmers selling flowers and produce. During November and December you will find the Christmas tree farms selling your favorite wreaths and trees. This place is perfect. read more

Wow! Talk about visual overload! This place is fantastic. I have not seen this many flowers in one spot since we were last visiting the relatives in Holland. The outdoor part of the market is in what used to be the platforms from the old train station. It is a great venue for the gazillion plant farms that obviously are in abundance in the tri-state area. There was a healthy variety of flowering, green and edible plants available. The hanging pots and pre planted decorative arrangements were an overflowing gluttony of brilliance and texture. Must be the humidity. Inside the old station are markets and restaurants featuring mostly locally grown and produced items. The organic food store, featuring some of the sweetest sweet corn from Georgia I have ever tasted, with a wide variety of wine, spices, vegetables and just about anything else you might need. There is also a sush bar, seafood market, meat market, coffee shop and many more in the old station. This is really a destination spot in Charleston read more

This is a hidden gem in Charleston. I wish we'd been able to see it at full strength on a Saturday! If you're looking for a good market or just a nice place to stretch your legs while passing through it's worth a look. There are several purveyors of specialty goods inside, primarily meats, wines and herbs. There was also a coffee bar. The restrooms were very clean. The outside is well shaded and had a plethora of gorgeous plants to choose from. There was also plentiful seating. I wish there had been more in the way of food choices so we could have had a meal. read more

I did find it a little confusing when shops started and ended so you have to pay attention to the boundaries. But lots of options. Next time I want to try SoHo's. I was able to get food that was gluten and dairy free. The purple onion had these amazing gluten free/vegan pita chips! Wish I bought more. Overall, bring cash or be prepared to spend a $5 minimum at each shop with a debit/credit card. read more

My sister and I stopped by Capitol Market on our way through Charleston. It wasn't far off the exit and I love exploring new markets so we figured, why not? We needed gas and a snack and we could get both near by! There is a parking lot out front and we snagged a spot up close. It was a Monday afternoon so I can imagine it gets filled up more on the weekends. We browsed through the indoor section at first. There were several different vendors including a chocolate shop, a seafood section, tons of fruits and vegetables, and even a gift store type section with locally made goods. They had items like soap and pottery, even jarred items like pumpkin butter. It was pretty cool. While walking through, I also noticed a little seating area and right next to it was a lego wall, which was really awesome. What a wonderful idea for keeping the kiddos occupied! Eventually we made our way outside and wondered around the flowers, herbs, and various types of plants. They had multiple different vendors, all offering an assortment of different plants for your yard and garden. I really love that there is a place like this here. You can get a lot of different things all in one place and its fantastic supporting all the local businesses. Everyone working there was friendly, saying hello and offering help if need be. If I'm ever driving through the area again I know I'll stop by for a snack or souvenir. read more

This market is an indoor/outdoor establishment. On this Sunday, the outside consisted of all Christmas trees of different sizes. The temperature-controlled inside (which is one long hallway with shops on either side) has nice variety of shops that specialize in fresh meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables, spices, coffees, sandwiches, wines, cheeses and glassware.
