Hot dogs
Dub H.

I can't believe this place only has 85 reviews as of December 2024. This is a hidden WV gem and one of the places on my best of West Virginia list. The thing to get here are the "hot dogs" which are eclairs that are cut down the middle like a hot dog bun and filled with the most delicious buttercream you will ever taste in your life. The pastry bread is very soft and sweet as well with just the right amount of puffiness. I have sent dozens of people here who are passing through over the years and they all stop every time now. These things are so good that if I have friends passing through and coming to NC, I have them stop and get me a couple dozen. I really couldn't speak to any of the other pastries because I can't get past the hot dogs...I only get them 1-2 times a year at most so I'm not willing to try anything else. It's a very small store but they turn people out really fast. It's to-go only, no dining inside. Last time I was passing through on my motorcycle I got six of them and went outside and sat down on a set of stairs and ate three of them and packed the other three in my cooler.

My husband and I are new to West Virginia and we had heard all about this bakery and the "hotdogs". We got the pastry dogs and a chocolate peanut butter cake and it was delicious! It was definitely lived up to the hype.

I far, far prefer my gyro meat to be grilled on a vertical rotisserie. The waitress said that they make their own gyro meat. It tasted like it was mostly beef, not lamb. I like my gyros to be 100% lamb. There was not enough tzatziki sauce on the gyro for my taste. I like my gyros to have fries in them. Instead, I was served potato chips on the side. I might go back to try their pizza and gelato. I don't think I'll bother with the gyro again.

They didn't try to make me substitute something else after I declined the first time to have them give me something else. Chips were great. Crunchy yet not hard at all. I was almost going for 4 because while the gyro was excellent, the bread was so soft yet it didn't get soggy, I felt like it had too much of the tahini or whatever thr cream they put in it. I like it but for thr first half of thr gyro it seemed that that was the overpowing flavor. The second half I'd the gyro it was differnet. All ingredients were well balanced and complemented eachother. I ordered the gouda bites

For three days I had been searching any business who would help me gift something to my BFF with NO:( luck! Then I found Casey. Unbelievably awesome service, great suggestions and this girl went above and beyond my expectations. My friend was so blessed with a beautifully wrapped yummy chocolate decadance! And I was concerned because we hadn't discussed prices. Casey sent me an invoice on my email and wow! I was shocked. She is reasonably price (actually she should charge much more) She did all this for me and delivered it to my BFF at her hotel! Trustworthy, Talented, awesomeness. But when you're visiting a city, stop in to support one local biz, and that biz owner asks if you've been to Charleston Bread...well, you know you have to go. Honestly I was full at this point, as I had been to a coffee shop, cake shop, and market. But when in Charleston...I walked in and immediately the aroma captivated me. It was as if every oven had opened simultaneously, as the smell of cookies and breads and spices all entranced me. Two others were ahead of me and when I mentioned it was my first time, they had plenty of recommendations. I could tell this was sage advice being sent my way. I also noticed, on their menu, that the sourdough bread had "Charleston" in front of it. So I inquired about the difference between theirs and others, if any. The head baker came up and explained how the elevation, temperature, and water all effect the starter which in turn effects the final dough which produces each loaf. And yes, I did leave with a loaf (along with a number of other items). I gave myself about a hour (and the walk back to my hotel) to work up appetite so I could fully enjoy this experience. Then, I devoured everything. Delicious, perfect textures, and the longing that I wish I lived closer. If you are within a hour of this place stop in!

This place takes preorders but also had a good selection of loaves and sweets relatively late in the day. Fresh pasta was available as well. My needs were not huge, but I walked out with some appealing pastries. An oatmeal chocolate chip cookie (yes, it's both) was well-received, and my cinnamon roll was tasty if not as moist as I'd hoped. An almond croissant delivered sweet almond paste and a buttery crust. They weren't transcendent, but they were satisfying.
