We were with a group of 6 friends traveling to visit another friend in Arkansas and decided to stop in for a bite. The restaurant is very conveniently located on the side of the highway. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the inside gives you those comfy, relaxed southern vibes. For lunch I ordered the chicken fingers with a side of mashed potatoes. I LOVE me some white gravy and was a bit sad to hear they were out, but the brown gravy was pretty tasty so it wasn't too bad. The potatoes were a bit on the dry side but had a good flavor. The chicken fingers were SO GOOD. My husband ordered the club sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes, which he said he also enjoyed. Walked in hungry, left hungry. We waited about 45 minutes for our food. I ordered fried green tomatoes and a baked potato thinking it would be fast. The fried green tomatoes were wrong. They were hockey pucks. My baked potato had a boiled texture so it was way past holding time, it was hard as a rock. I couldn't even chew the fried green tomatoes they were so hard. I would say change the recipe and change the cooking method or just take them off the menu. They were deep fried and fried green tomatoes aren't supposed to be deep fried. They had some kind of thick flour breading on them and it was gummy. So I'm not one to complain without offering a solution, I'm going to recommend this breading mix. Get a 4 lb bag of cornmeal mix, make sure it's a mix that has the flower and everything already in it, such as three rivers, or Martha white, then get a 1 lb jar of Creole seasoning or Cajun seasoning such as Walmart Great value Creole seasoning. Put the 4 lb bag of cornmeal mix in a large bowl. Add 3/4 of the 1 lb jar of Creole seasoning, you don't want to add the whole jar because if you do it's going to be too salty. Mix well and keep it in an airtight container. The tomato slices should be no thicker than three nickels stacked together. Dip them an egg then dip them in the breading mix and pan fry, shallow fry in about a quarter to half inch of oil. Serve with ranch or remoulade sauce. My suggestion would be serve them on a bed of grits with sauce on the side. But the recipe needs to change for sure. My husband was okay with his meal, I didn't hear him complain. Had no complaints about the service the people were very nice and the place was very clean, but there was a party going on in the back room, and I would recommend that if there's going to be a party with that many people, just shut the restaurant down for the public so that people don't have to wait so long for their food. They're just doesn't seem to be enough hands in the kitchen to handle all the business. And I love the decor that part was really nice. read more

We were driving back to Texas from Missouri and decided to stop here because of the high rating. I'm not sure why it has such a high rating because it definitely wasn't anything impressive. The waitress was somewhat nice at the beginning. I ordered the chicken breast and loaded baked potato. The chicken was very dry and not good. They brought me out a plain baked potato and when I asked where the toppings were the waitress went back to the window and yelled that she needed toppings for the baked potato because I didn't tell her I wanted it loaded. There were also two dead flies choking on the table next to us. The bathroom decor is cute though as are the decorations around the restaurant and the cheesecake was good but had an unidentifiable black coating on part of it. read more

While the decor is cute, we walked in to an almost empty Wheelers at 11:40 this morning & sat down. By 12:40 after several people who came in after us were eating and some left we still had not received our food or had been checked on once. When we asked about our food an hour later the first time they said they were waiting on hashbrowns. Five minutes later we asked again and were told it was the eggs and sausage they were waiting on. Those were the only things we ordered. They were waiting on everything that we ordered to start cooking. I encouraged my family to walk out as we had somewhere to be but they just sat and waited anyway. We finally received only two of the three plates that we ordered. The food was obviously rushed and they were not fresh potatoes that may have actually taken some time but package shredded potatoes they take possibly 10 minutes. If it had been up to me I would've left but my family decided to sit down but I never received my meal. They initially tried to charge us for everything we ordered but since I never received my mail we asked about it while we were very late to get to the event that we had plenty of time to eat before normally. No apologies no coupon for next time no politeness at all just "I didn't know this" there were only three other tables in there with people at them. We won't be back. I love supporting local businesses but sloppy service like this is why people opt for chains instead which is sad. read more

Stopped on here on way from Houston to Tulsa for work because of the good reviews on Yelp. Well worth it. Great little cafe, lots of locals inside and where the waitresses knew about everyone's name and what they wanted. Had the western salad, comes with a cut up CFS. Very good. A great local downhome country place. As you would expect most of the options were fried, but there was a lot of good variety. I had to ask what the lamb fries were to receive a chuckle and shy reply that they were bull testicals. Well I had to get those. They were actually really tastey and tender. We have probably passed Wheeler's a thousand times in the past 36 years of regular trips through Kiowa. We have always noticed cars in the parking lot. We made a note to stop there on our next trip. Well, today we pulled off the highway and into the parking lot. The food was excellent and the portions are huge. I had a chicken fried steak sandwich that was enormous. There were about 5 times more onion rings than I could eat. My wife had their cheeseburger and fries. We both left a lot of food on the plate that we could not hold. Came across this great diner on our way from Tulsa to Dallas. Special of the day was fish and shrimp . The catfish was breaded in corn meal. Light and not greasy. We stopped here on our way to Joplin. Love the decor, and the food is out of this world, especially for being a small spot off the side of the highway. The chicken fried steak is what they are known for, and it is beyond any size I have had before, residing in Texas, where everything is bigger. I ordered the steak and eggs, medium rare. The steak had zero red. Don't get me wrong, it was MR, but grey all the way through. It smelled and tasted like it was frozen for weeks. Utterly disgusting. So I had my two eggs and half of one piece of toast, plus my coffee. $10 bucks. $10 fricking dollars for two eggs, bite of toast, coffee and a disgusting steak I couldn't touch. Thank you.
