I needed to kill some time and stumbled across this hidden gem. Great drinks, live music, great people

    Distillery bar

The distillery tour is very underwhelming, it's overcrowded, overhyped, and HOT!! There's no air conditioning in the buildings. The tour is rushed and we payed extra to bottle some vodka. We got the option for watermelon flavored vodka or plain vodka. Out of all the flavors they have, we only had the option to add watermelon flavor? Seriously? I would have preferred another option. We also heard that blueberry is their top selling flavor, which accounts for 19% of their sales. They could have also chosen that flavor instead of watermelon since it is more popular, and it tastes a lot better. After the rushed tour I got a tiny tiny tasting of the blueberry vodka and the strawberry vodka. This was the only vodka included in the tour. They also had $5 cocktails which was enticing but it was also in the un-airconitioned area. The cocktail was good but not worth the long drive out to the middle of nowhere for a lame tour.

Love the product and the story. Did the distillery tour and it was fun. Suggest the bottle tour to fill your own bottle. Live music on the patio and drinks. Nice way to spends a Saturday afternoon.

Had the vodka and saw this wasn't far from Frisco...so we went. Extremely friendly welcome as you walk thru the 2 giant wooden doors! It was a little sanctuary filled with yummy vodka. We had purchased the distillery tour on Groupon which came with 3 tastings. We had some time before the tour, so they suggested we get a cocktail from the bar and do the tastings. $5 cocktails which is nice and their menu of cocktails is impressive. You can also take it home to serve yourself and feel mixologisty. I went for a standard mule. They make their own ginger beer in house and it's great! Has a good ginger bite, lots of flavor. Tastings--I tried the cucumber vodka, prickly pear vodka and grapefruit vodka. Cucumber had a good essence of the flavor without being overwhelming. I've had other cucumber flavored vodkas and they miss the mark. This one was perfect. Mixed it with some of their Bloody Mary mix--yum! Grapefruit was just eh for me. Prickly Pear was just too sweet for my taste. Tour--the head guy who mixes and masters was our guide. Knowledgeable and explained their process without being too technical for the audience who has already started drinking. Loved learning how distilling changes the flavor, alcohol content and hangover factor. **best part: learned that their facility was formerly a women's underwear manufacturing site. They have a huge pair of framed granny panties in the tasting room. My friend suggested they use "drop your panties vodka" as a new ad campaign.

I have been wanting to try WSD our for the longest. My friends always talk about this place. Cute date spot or a cute place for you and your friends. We took the 20-25 minute tour- two options, $12 or $17. Very beautiful and clean distillery- wonderful people. They let you sample everything. I would love to visit more often. Proud to have such a great company in pilot point! Great experience and delicious vodka! Love the pear! Really fun afternoon!

Let me preface this with I've become somewhat of a bourbon snob... Let me also start off saying the tour was great and I really enjoyed it. Now, the long version... As you approach the venue, you'll wonder if you're lost. Driving through a neighborhood... yup, more houses... mmmkay... Then it appears. Parking is basically a free-for-all. You can park anywhere, including close to the picnic tables. There are tons of picnic tables in front of the distillery (and neighboring brewery), and then a stage that's closest to the road. (You'll see what I mean.) After parking, make your way to the large building with a large wooden sign out front. (The smaller building next door is a brewery.) The sign has a bird silhouette on it and - you guessed it - says Western Son Distillery. Climb the wooden stairs to a small, elevated patio (with a few more picnic tables and an attempt to shade them with undersized, inadequate umbrellas) and through the front door, which sticks and is hard to close - but is old and wooden and cool at the same time. Inside you'll immediately note a small bar in front of you. To your left is where you buy bottles - a much longer bar - and whoever is working that area will check you in, whether it's via Groupon or whatever, and give you a wristband. The tour starts with a very good video that you watch in a room that's back and to the right from when you first enter. If you arrive late for the video, the video room (labeled MEETING ROOM if you're late like we were and the door is closed) will be dark and you may have trouble finding a seat if it's crowded. After the video, you follow your guide around to the actual operations side of things. First impression: this place is HUGE. Apparently it's a former panty factory (ha!). They have rows and rows of barrels, stacked 3-high, full of product - as well as cases of finished bottles on pallets stacked everywhere. Truly, this place is HUGE for a "craft" distillery. On that note, they're clearly very well funded and the entire place is owned by JEM Beverage Co, who started out bottling sourced product (from Indiana, I think?) in Carrollton. I remember because I lived in Carrollton at the time. Based on the tour and the TONS of barrels, I'd say they still have a lot of sourced product aging in there. They only have one still making whiskey, and there are a loooooot of barrels aging in that place. Anyway, my own speculation... After the tour, which was entertaining and excellent, you get 3 tastes. They have a lot to choose from, so choose carefully. A lot of people are fans of the flavored vodkas (gag me with a spoon), but I stuck to whiskeys. I got their single-barrel bourbon, pinot-noir-finished whiskey, and cognac-finished whiskey. (Finished whiskeys are bourbon finished in pinot or cognac barrels.) Side note: this place has two "divisions," if you will - Western Son Vodka and Red River Whiskey. So technically I was on the whiskey tour and sampling different Red River Whiskeys. But it's all one place. As a bourbon and whiskey guy who almost always drinks everything neat, the Red River Whiskey webpage is very telling: pouring some Red River Whiskey over a whiskey wedge (huge piece of ice). It's like fancy beer vs piss lite: you want piss lite as cold as possible, right? Anyway, I digress... and a LOT of bourbon drinkers like theirs over ice, so hey... I was very disappointed in the single-barrel bourbon, which tasted hotter / higher proof than it was and lacked any complexity or depth. The pinot finish was more intriguing, but the pinot was VERY subtle and only appeared on my palette well after the taste... maybe 3 seconds into the finish. Which was at least interesting and added some complexity to an otherwise meh whiskey. The cognac finish was perhaps the most interesting, but I didn't love it. It was... different, and different is good. Good to try different. So, pros and cons... Pros: excellent tour (5/5 stars) with engaging tour host and great introductory video, fun and friendly employees (5/5 stars), good Groupon that included some products with the tour (4/5 stars) Cons: actual whiskey is not very good (I'd say it's worth $20 a bottle, not the $40 it goes for - 2/5 stars) and there is a SERIOUS lack of shade outside (1/5 stars), which puts a damper on what could be a much cooler overall venue experience I'm glad I did the tour, but I did not leave with any bottles. As someone who loves to support local business and loves bourbon... well, you get the drift. The people side of this operation are great. Now they just need to hone their craft into something I'll pay craft prices for.

Just took a 3pm tour on a Saturday! We came a little early and were able to grab a cocktail before the tour started. They have a menu of house cocktails with all their different flavors. The tour went through how they produce and bottle and the growth they've seen recently. Be prepared if you come in the summer as the production floor isn't air conditioned - but it was still bearable as it wasn't too long. After the tour you get 3 tastings, yum! They make their own ginger beer and Bloody Mary mix that is also available for purchase. I'm never one to order a Bloody Mary but I was able to try one and it was surprisingly good! Cocktails are $5 and they have other merchandise available. They are planning to expand the tour in the next month, worth a visit!

Really like their vibe here. They don't have covered areas so be ready for the heat in Texas.....or come on a rainy day like we did and it was so deserted and awesome because we got awesome 1-on-1 attention. They offer tours at 1,3,5 with around 40 people. We had their gin (leans more citrus than juniper), watermelon vodka and lime vodka drinks and they were all very good! They have concerts which look/sound really fun! Definitely a fun day trip from the Dallas area!

Great place to get your booze on! They had a brewery next door called whistle post. I ordered a bourbon based mule. It was tasty, got to keep the mug. My wife got the buddy Holley. They had a great assortment of whiskey, bourbon and vodka's.

Amazing staff and fun tour. Well worth the drive. Make your way up on a Saturday and hear some music!

Amazing folks, great price, a lot better than Titos. Well worth the drive from dfw. Go on a Saturday.

What a fun venue! We purchased a tour and tasting, and sampled some of the $5 cocktails. The house-made Bloody Mary mix and ginger beer were delish! During the tour, the head distiller was so informative and made it really enjoyable. The weather was cold and rainy, but noticed the big outdoor space and look forward to going back when its patio weather! The tasting room could use some live music or entertainment for the large group of people waiting for the tour, but otherwise we had a great visit and look forward to visiting again.

Does ginger beer contain alcohol, and if so how much?

No alcohol content in Ginger Beer. It's a soda...like Ginger Ale, but a much stronger ginger flavor.
