I wanted to give a shoutout to Bill at the Mountain View Costco #143! He was checking receipts,…read morebut he does so much more than that. He always greets customers, makes a little conversation, and says something that either brightens your day or gets a laugh out of you. It's especially appreciated early in the morning when everyone is still waking up! His positive attitude and sense of humor make something as simple as leaving Costco a much more enjoyable experience. Great customer service isn't always about doing something big--it's the small interactions that people remember. Bill definitely makes a difference!

I absolutely love Costco. I'm not ashamed to admit that…read more What I don't love is when I'm checking out a new warehouse, doing some shopping, and the experience is deplorable. We all know that their parking lot can be a nightmare, and that varies depending on the time of day. This parking lot is definitely no exception. In actuality, this is probably one of the worst parking lot experiences I've ever had. There's no rhyme a reason to it, it doesn't flow, and unfortunately, the people in the parking lot are pretty indicative of the people shopping in the warehouse. After finally being able to park, and then trying to hunt down a shopping cart, I was in the warehouse and finally shopping. I would consider Mountain View to be fairly civilized location. Boy do they have me fooled. Apparently, shopping carts are the new game of go karts. Everyone is fair game, it's acceptable to push someone or their shopping cart with your own, and run into people and keep going. I thought maybe that was my experience, but as I made my way through the warehouse, it was an everyone experience. I did enjoy the fact that I found some items at this location that I have never seen at the handful of other warehouses that I do shop at, so there is the positive in the story. The lines to check out are absolutely insane and people change lanes with the intent of trying to push someone else out of their way. It goes from being amusing to ridiculous. My plan was to go through self check out, but then one of the Costco employees started picking up all of the hand scanners, and saying that they would no longer be using them because of this particular warehouse, I guess people were not reading things incorrectly, and it wasn't being caught at the door Getting through one of the regular lines was less problematic than it appeared, and the line thankfully moved a lot faster, but not without incident. The people in front of me were literally throwing things onto the "belt", and when some of the jars collided and broke, that made for a lovely smelly mess. By the time I got to the cashier, he had a look of desperation in his eyes, and I promised him that checking me out would be as pain-free as possible. I was glad that I could bring some levity to the situation, and give him a feeling of relief. Definitely not my favorite Costco. Definitely not my favorite shopping experience. Definitely not really planning on going back.

Old World Designs was one of my favorite stores when I used to live in Mountain View; I returned to…read morelive in the UK a few years ago but was thrilled to discover they are still in business when I found myself unexpectedly back longish-term in SF (my daughter had a catastrophic fall this summer and needed a full-time carer). I was short on some specialty tapestry thread for a project I'd brought with me for my usual shortish summer visit. No help in SF; googling revealed that Old World Designs is still thriving in Menlo Park; I couldn't get there easily but an email query resulted in Linda helping me by mail: she matched a sample I sent her, arranged to send a new skein to my address here, everything taken care of remotely and very efficiently . . . And I can go on stitching while my daughter recovers. Many, many thanks for fantastic service.

I visited this shop yesterday after seeing a canvas listed as "in stock" on their website. I'm…read morenewer to needlepoint and was excited to browse in person, especially since there are only a couple stores in the South Bay/Peninsula. When I asked about a specific canvas, I was told it was not available. I mentioned that the website showed it in stock and had an active add-to-cart option. The response I received was unexpectedly dismissive and in a condescending tone. The woman behind the counter said: "Amazon has trained you to expect things you see online to be in stock," followed by an explanation that their website does not really support online orders, at least not yet. I completely understand that inventory systems and websites don't always match. Had this simply been explained in a straightforward way, I would likely have purchased a different design/kit while I was there. Instead, the interaction felt condescending and uncomfortable enough that I chose not to continue shopping. For a hobby that relies on welcoming and guiding newcomers, tone matters. This was not my first experience with needlepoint, but I can easily see how it could discourage someone just getting started. Because of this experience, I won't be returning. I'd recommend new stitchers seek out another local store where questions are encouraged and customers feel comfortable spending time (and money).
