Ever since I went to a Jewish funeral and the mini plain bagels were dry and hard as rocks, I've been craving a good bagel. This is the Mother Ship. Open 24 hours. This is where all the Valley bagels are conceived and born and sent out to the stores. I'm not sure how far they deliver but THIS is where the bagels are made. So fresh and the best bagels. I used to work in the area 20 years ago so it's been a long time since I've been. New flavors of bagels and cream cheese. I don't remember egg everything bagel. The lobby is very big and spacious. It's cash only but they do have an ATM. The server helping me was very sweet and helpful. A bakers dozen and 2 flavored cream cheese was $36.85. A little pricey but definitely worth it. Best bagels in the Valley if not all of SoCal. Factory fresh !!! Used to hang out at Super Shops on Van Nuys Blvd.. Wednesday was cruise night, but would also go on Fridays and Saturdays. It was hard to decide whether to get bagels or go up the road to Hogly Wogly. Sometimes we would splurge and just do both. Then go cruisin'. Munch on leftovers all night. Good times. I love Western Bagel but our recent visit to this location was a little disappointing. First off, I ALWAYS forget this location is cash only so I have come in on a couple other occasions and had to leave because I didn't have cash (they do have an ATM but I'm an apple pay girlie). The bagel itself, was delicious! The lox on my bagel did not have the best flavor unfortunately. I was also super bummed that they don't have iced coffee! One day, while working, he overheard a union representative say there were no good bagels in California. This motivated his entrepreneurial spirit, and David set out with his wife, Ethel, and two business partners to the Golden State to open up a bagel bakery. When he arrived in October of 1946, he noticed the tastes of the West Coast residents were different than those of East Coasters. He developed a bagel that was softer and chewier than the typically dense and harder East Coast bagel. David's intuition proved right, helping Western Bagel to become "The Bagel That Won The West®". They unfortunately don't sell lattes here. :( Additionally, there is no eating area, just a big room with bagel displays, a few snacks, a fridge with spread, and a small self service area. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Decades of experience may have helped them perfect their bagels because sheesh they were good. My only disappointment was that the generous amount of lox spread made it difficult to enjoy the bagel. There was probably enough spread there for three bagels! Although there wasn't iced coffee either, I appreciated that the staff improvised and gave me a cup of hot coffee with a cup of ice. The coffee was as expected, and it really hit the spot! I've been coming to Western Bagel for a while, and the food and service have always been consistently good. However, my experience yesterday was disappointing. We visited around 2:30 PM, and the employee working at the counter didn't greet us, just gave us an unfriendly look, which felt uncomfortable. When placing our very simple order (two everything bagels with turkey, lettuce, and mayo), she seemed confused and made odd facial expressions. When we got home, both sandwiches had tomatoes and mustard, which wasn't what we asked for. Normally, I'd overlook that since the bagels are usually great, but the main reason i rated one star was the poor attitude and lack of attentiveness. If she needs to take notes to help her get orders right, that's fine, but customer service starts with a friendly attitude and basic courtesy. She needs to put a smile on her face, it's very simple :) read more

I visited the Granada hills location as soon as they opened at 5AM with an urgent situation of needing 900 bagels ASAP for a work event. As soon as I explained what was going on their AM female manager (I feel terrible I cannot remember her name) she was incredibly helpful and so kind. She told me she didn't have all the bagels I needed but called the Van Nuys location and gave them a heads up that I would be coming over to get more from them. She was able to give me around 300 bagels which I dropped off to get our event started then headed over to the Van Nuys location. They had already started preparing the bagels for me. Rosie helped me and she was absolutely wonderful. They did inform me that their location was cash only which was also an issue. They found a workaround for me to pay the Granada Hills location with my card since I couldn't get enough cash on short amount of time and needed the bagels ASAP. it's so nice to see there is still compassion and human kindness in the world and for them to be so understanding and willing to help in my time of crisis. This is truly an incredible team and our event was flawless and no one would have ever known about our bagel crisis thanks to Western Bagel. I will be ordering from you guys for all future events.
