I was pretty shocked at how rudely me and another person were treated today. There was no one at the entrance, nor any sign instructing us to wait. People were filing in as normal. Next thing I know, an employee comes around the corner and screams at me and two other people saying that we need to leave and that they're at capacity. I understand the need to manage capacity in these times, but being yelled at seemed really inappropriate. I turned around and took my business elsewhere. read more

I went in to purchase an indoor plant as a gift for a friend. Vicki was so helpful. She recommended a few and helped me select a pot to put it in. Then she potted the plant for me and because I said it was a gift she put it in a nice box with tissue paper. They have a great selection of plants and even better service! read more

This was a fun nursery to browse through. There were some plants we haven't seen before, very different. I wish now I wrote down the names. Anyway, the selections are great and the plants are identified with markers letting you know if they are drought or deer resistant. Always very helpful here in the hills. All the plants look very healthy and there are little garden pretties and statuary type things tucked here and there. It's a lot of fun just to look around. We found three different types of ground cover to help with our less watering efforts. Today they had a pumpkin patch with lots of different sized pumpkins. Here you will find: herbs, vegetables, ornamental and the ordinary. Indoor and outdoor. Trees, shrubs and again ground covers. We kept saying "Wow!" and "Look at that!" as we toured the grounds. We've checked out several local nurseries, especially ones with coupons in the Chinook book. Several are very pretty -- in a beautifully landscaped location but the prices are expensive, the staff is kind of surly or nonchalant, or perhaps the plants die soon after you get them home. I am thrilled to discover Westbrae. I never would have happened upon it as it's located in an area of Berkeley I've never been. But now I'll be intentional about my visits. We bought a number of succulents and a blueberry plant. We wanted two blueberries but they were out so they took our number and called when it arrived. I love that. Everyone was so nice and mellow...I suppose they like working there. read more

Very helpful, friendly, down-to-earth employees, and a great selection of starters in the spring for your good-eatin' gardening needs. I bought a few raspberry plants in Westbrae Nursery. Raspberries grew up well and after six months they got orange powder under leaves. I checked many websites and all of them advise removing plants because there is no cure for that disease. Also, the official Ontario agriculture website says when raising new plants from orange powder diseased raspberries they could look healthy in the beginning but after some time they will get the disease. Exactly what happened to me. I wrote a 1-star review on Google for this Westbrae nursery. They responded to my review that the disease " raspberry rust" could be easily treated. And I should go there and talk to them before I wrote bad review. It confirmed my suspicion that they knew their raspberries had the disease before. Selling sick plants and then selling their cure could make a short-run profit for them. They simply don't care how much we lose: care about plants, exciting times looking at how plants grow, first raspberries, and after all, digging out and throwing in the garbage. I am very sorry I did not read bad reviews before I entered this shop. read more

I have gotten great plants and great service at Westbrae over the years. Their succulent selection is incredible, and we have had many great meals from the tomato and pepper plants and lemon tree we bought there. I've dashed in to find a beautiful plant for a friend that needed cheering up, and found a good selection. But every spring, the quality of their plants becomes even clearer. Over ten years ago, I bought freesia bulbs there. To finish out the bed, I ended up picking up a few more at a hardware store. Every spring since I have been treated to gorgeous blooms with lovely fragrance from the Westbrae stock. Most of the hardware bulbs are puny and weak, if they even come up at all. I don't recommend this place. I bought 30 silver sheen plants and put them all on drip system. One of them is dying and I was told that they are over watered and they can't replace the one that died. Berkeley horticulture replaced some drought resistant plants that I bought for my garden when they were dying after 1 month. You might be better off buying from there instead of here. read more

There are so many nice nurseries in the East Bay, I feel like I've overlooked this place in the past and should give it a bit more credit for selection, nice vibe, and layout. I like to go to Annie's Annuals in Richmond, Cactus Jungle for cool specimens of succulent and cacti + indoor plant accountremont, and OSH and Grocery Outlet for cheapie annuals to dress up my beds in a hurry. But they have more established (large gallon pot sized) perennials arranged very usefully. Brainstorming and getting ideas is a big part of going to nurseries for me, so if I emphasize the layout a lot, it's because that's a huge part of my criteria. They definitely have a deceptively large selection of plants, because they generally seem to source from more nurseries than other places I have mentioned. Very well thought out selection. I especially love the indoor plant section of this nursery. It's so cozy and charming, with their plants always looking fantastic and a VERY wide selection of specialty indoor and tropical plants. Always loving birds and bird cages, they have a sweet pair of lovebirds (I think?) that never fail to delight me in this section. It's so cute. The selection of plant food and accessories/garden tools is okay, not the best. Pitfalls include the parking and annoying drive up Gilman. read more

I recently purchased String of Pearls succulent from Westbrae Nursery and I got a huge rash (on the front part of my neck). Its been more than 5 weeks and I am still recovering. I returned the plant to the store and was given a store credit as a refund. I was sad because the staff didn't tell me (obviously they didn't know) that the plant is toxic especially for pets and children. I am not a plant specialist but how did I find out? I had to track back my weekend activities and looked up on google if the plants I bought would give rashes. I was right. Please look up on google about the plant before you purchase them. Don't expect the staff to tell you about it. I realized that my love for plants almost cost my life. If something worse happened to me, I cannot be protected by the law because there is no law against selling poisonous plants. IT IS LEGAL TO SELL toxic plants. Once again, please do your research about the plant before purchasing them. Cheers! read more

3 stars because they do have a nice selection & helpful employees. I have bought things there before & will again. BUT... I went there Saturday looking for a (non-fruiting) Cherry Blossom Tree with pink blossoms. 1) They had numerous with white blossoms but none with pink blossoms (which I thought, but perhaps incorrectly, was the only or most common kind). 2) They are VERY VERY expensive. $149. My mouth dropped. The employee explained "Well, they are a tree." Maybe the real reason is they are in Berkeley with high rents & taxes. 3) I decided to look on line. I found EXACTLY what I wanted out of state for around $35 no tax (big price difference) but unfortunately they are not allowed to ship into CA. Probably our protective insect laws. I support the laws but they are inconvenient. What a price difference! Since I travel out of state, I could have shipped it to Las Vegas & snuck it in but I support the insect law & won't do that. I do wish there was a way to "clean" the tree of the pests. 4) I continued to look & found that Home Depot sells them for under $40. It is close to what I wanted. I ordered 2 & will find out on receipt if it is exactly what I want. For the price difference what Home Depot has is close enough. 2 for $80 (free shipping) vs 1 for $149. By the way, this particular kind of tree has a short life. They die in 15-25 years. So it is not like an investment in many trees that will last "forever". I am replacing what was already planted at my home & died. I am old & selling the house in the not distant future so don't need to spend $450 for 3 trees (my original intention). I only bought 2 (not 3) because I am not certain it is exactly the kind I really wanted. I presume my parents got them before the state had rigid laws. This would be about 1948. read more

I stopped by here feeling down after a trip to the hospital about a week and a half ago and felt comforted by the greenery. One of the employees showed me to the native section and I bought a large ceanothus I'd been looking for and a couple of native perennials -- then on the way out I spotted a pretty, flowing grass and asked the person who had been helping me to confirm it was native-- he said it was to southern California, which was good enough for me as a novice gardener so I bought two. Normally I would have checked to confirm this, but it was raining and he sounded confidant. A few days later I went to plant, and looked up the plant, and guess what? Not only are they not native, but the species is actually invasive! It's not something that I can ethically plant, and frankly, I'm shocked that any reputable nursery would sell it. I live over an hour from the nursery, but had to be back in the area today so figured I'd take the plants back then, although I couldn't find the receipt (I didn't keep track of it because I would normally never try to return a plant!) But selling someone an INVASIVE plant for their NATIVE plant garden, after confirming that it is native seemed like a pretty big misstep that I was sure the nursery would want to rectify. So I was really disappointed today when I went in and found the staff not only utterly unhelpful, but also unnecessarily rude. When I told them that a staff person had told me the plants were native, the woman at the counter said, "ACTUALLY all our native plants have stickers on them" -- why not consider telling your STAFF that?? I'd much rather the original person just tell me they didn't know if it was native, rather than making something up, but there seems to be no trepidation here about peddling trash as long as someone is buying. The attitude today was unnecessary, the lying to begin with was unnecessary, and frankly, selling invasive plants is irresponsible. Maybe consider a special sticker for your plants that have the potential to decimate our local ecosystem?? I never thought I'd be so disgusted by a nursery. Phooey on me for trusting their staff and not googling the plant in the rain or inside (during covid) before buying. Anyway, if you are looking for informed staff, civil customer service, better prices, and a better variety, there are many superior options in Berkeley, not to mention one just up the street at Berkeley Hort. read more

All located within the nursery itself, surrounded by citrus trees, water fountains and many beautiful plants. The customer service was excellent. We walk over to Westbrae from time to time. Its a charming little place, somewhat smaller than the Westbrae nursery of my youth which if I remember correctly, also encompassed the "pot" shop next door. (For those of you who *must* know...I mean ceramic pot shop, not a medicinal clinic.) Anyway, my one *great* find at Westbrae was a collection of Good Karma flags for our garden. I purchased a string with a celtic motif. When I returned a year later, the flags were no longer in stock. However, the Good Karma website *does* have an extensive collection if you are willing to wait a week or two for a delivery. Back to Westbrae...I like their location and their selection of unusual items. Its worth browsing through if you happen to be in the neighborhood heading for Berkeley Hort. It *could* become a destination nursery given its location. For right now, its just an interesting place to visit. read more

Good selection of seedlings for both organic and non-organic gardens. So many choices and they have indoor garden options and succulents. The knowledge of their staff is very good and helpful. Although, I think them and many other stores like theirs probably need to increase choice for apartment style gardens as more and more people have less and less chances of having a backyard but have balconies or patios that they'd like to garden in. I really love this place. The people are great, the plants are vibrant and happy, and most of all, I love the selection. For such a cozy and smallish place, they have so many wonderful things (native plants, organic herbs and veggies, ornamentals, citrus and other fruit trees, etc). It's rather uncanny, when you think about it. I feel like Berkeley Hort just kind of swallows me up, but Westbrae is just an easy, enjoyable, sweet place to be. Just don't go in thinking, "Oh, I'll just look," cuz let me tell you, it's not going to happen. The plants seem to be whispering, "Take me home, take me home," and I always do. read more

This is such a lovely nursery. Everyone who helped us, especially Justin, were VERY knowledgeable and friendly. It was easy to gain assistance and check-out even on a Saturday midday. The variety here is spectacular. We wanted blueberries and they have about six different varieties. All of the plants are supple and healthy, the whole place looks like a dense thriving garden. We could have easily walked out with thousands of dollars in beautiful gardening materials feeling completely happy but we stuck to our original plan. It is on the pricy side but mostly comparable to any nursery you would go to. The fruit bushes we bought were reasonable and the soil was actually better priced than large gardening department stores. The personal care was worth any additional cost. My whole family enjoyed the experience and we are definitely going back. read more

This summer we did a complete re-landscaping of our front yard. We sheet mulched the entire yard and we've had to buy a large amount of plants. So we've visited a bunch of nurseries as a result and this is one of our favorites. Two great things about this nursery are the selection and the how the plants are organized. I've found some very cool plants that I haven't seen at other nurseries and the plants are easy to find; they're separated into perennials, annuals, shaded plants, and so on. My favorite nursery in Berkeley. It used to be East Bay Nursery, they have a bigger selection, but after having problem with getting money back (over 1 month and I'm still waiting) after a double charge with my ATM card, Westbrae Nursery will get the whole of my business. This is not a very big nursery, still they manage to have everything I need and in great condition. I love their plaques for each plant with useful information, a picture of the plant in bloom and some personal reflections. I feel like I'm buying quality and it shows so far in my garden. We actually stumbled upon this place after visiting the Berkeley Horticultural nursery and we bought most of our plants from this place! Staff is very friendly. They have a wide selection of succulents as well as indoor plants. I bought a lipstick mini plant and some variegated string of hearts succulents which are very hard to find so I bought one for myself and my mom. read more

Case in point - I was trying to screen in my backyard with passionflowers. I went to Orchard Supply to get cheap plants. I found one for $35. It died in two weeks :( We found a nice selection at Westbrae for $15/each. And they didn't die! Nice people and very helpful. Good stuff! read more

The selection at Westbrae is really f'ing good and the workers are all super knowledgable and also happy to share the knowledge despite being completely slammed. I also found the cliental to be equally as friendly :) So double, triple plus there..... Prices are kinda high, but so are all nursery prices in Berkeley. I left happy and with a bunch of healthy plants I love and that are right for the space I'm putting in RE: knowledgable employees that are happy to share that knowledge. Very helpful, knowledgeable. Typically when I visit the nursery, its just to browse; but when I do need some help they spend as much time as needed. They never seem to busy to answer questions or even joke around for a second. As the caretaker for a preschool, I was looking for certain plant foods and other items that are safe to be used within a garden. Unfortunately, the fellow's name slips me - anyways I spent nearly 45 minutes being taught whats just fine - passable - and not so great even for grown ups. I enjoyed the conversation. In the end, I feel that every time that I visit here, I am also learning - as this is a newer hobby of mine. It even out of the way from my house and I still prefer this place compared to others. Since my house of one year has a prison yard for a garden, I've been scoping the plants in other people's places to figure out what I would like once we have the money. Now that it is about time, I went to another nursery to find this particular plant with purple flowers that I see everywhere, but would be perfect for my front yard. Didn't have it. Then I went to Westbrae Nursery- not only did they have it, but the owner was super nice and helpful when I quizzed him about all the different plants I was interested in and what would grow best for this and that kind of condition. Wonderful nursery! The nursery is on the small size, but you will notice that the care and condition of the plants are much better than other places. The employee's are uber friendly and helpful. I bought an aloe vera plant and pot and the employee re potted my plant for me. How's that for awesome customer service?! The prices (at least for what I wanted) were reasonable. And, the plants are healthy. This statement might seem like a small thing, but it isn't. I went to several places to purchase aloe vera plants and to my surprise I found them to be in poor condition. The worse a.v. plants were at Orchard Supply and Home Depot. I love browsing here. The nursery is calm and has great light. I will definitely come back to Westbrae Nursery. read more

This review is long overdue. The nursery is my favorite place to shop for outdoor plants. Their price is very reasonable compare to the other ones around. They are smaller in scale but is very well thought out on their plant selections and I am always able to find something nice and unique that works for my garden.
