Can't believe that this nursery is 100 year old. It is located in a convenient, almost residential area and features an exquisite, photogenic shade roof. Street parking is somewhat challenging but manageable with a short walk. Prices of most items are above average but the plants look awfully healthy and very well-taken care of. A seldomly seen maple in a gallon pot gestured to me with its red and green leaves so i had to take it home.

Excellent nursery. They have everything you could need and more! Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Such a pleasant setting to just browse, with a great selection of natives, trees, annuals, garden gear and more. They also have an area for indoor plants. Highly recommend visiting if you are in the area.

I always enjoy to visit this nursery. They have exotic plants. If you love Japanese maple and camellia; they have great selections. You would not seen them in any other nurseries. Prices are reasonable as they sell babies and young trees. Their inventories are moving. Come early in Spring to add you collections when the weather is nice and cool. Get ready to plant weeks before Summer heat arrives. Customer service is exceptional. Parking is always full, so I have to park several blocks away. Even though you would not seen anyone around-as soon as you pull your car-there are associates who will help to put the trees in your car. They are very helpful and polite. They notice me when I come by with my dog. They nicknamed her "the lamb" as she look like a little lamb. They walkie talkie their co-worker and tell them that they see we came by again. We were there 3 times a week and bought many plants. April 7, 2024 Came by and bought a Japanese Maple and a Wisteria. Last chance to shop and planting before the summer starts. The staffs notice when I came and asked my dog. I didn't bring my dog this time. As always they are very customer oriented. This my favorite nursery to add my plants collections.

Great nursery. There are a lot of good ones in this area, but this one has one of the larger selections of fruit trees. They have a bit of everything if you're looking for something specific, as well as a decently sized collection of pots, soil, and gardening tools available for purchase. Pricing is fair. Parking will be on the street as it's tucked into a neighborhood along with Monterey market and a few other shops. For fruit trees I saw various varieties of figs, mandarins, kiwis, plums, cherries, etc. They also had a good amount of berries, including golden raspberries, and a few exotic fruits as well. I was looking for a Puya Alpestris and they had quite a few available here. Definitely worth a visit!

Recommended to me by several folks when I asked for a good place to go to get my husband a "birthday tree" for the house. Don't ask me, dude just really wanted a tree in the house. I think the SIP is getting to him. Anyway, I didn't want to just swing by a home depot, I wanted a fun place to stroll around with the kid to make a day of it. Well we walked out of there with a gorgeous rubber tree plant, but also some burrito tail and fishhook succulents for our bathroom, a hanging pilea aquamarine because it was cute, some mint, some thyme, some trays/pots, soil, and a venus fly trap because come on who doesn't need that. Our bill was nuts, but we're happy with our purchases and service was good when we asked all about kid/dog toxicity, best options for our windows, and making sure the tree was loaded into the car with care. Take note on the hours since the line gets crazy long when it's toward closing, especially as they are limiting the number of people inside. Oh and make sure you pee first! After a long trek across the bridge I found the bathrooms closed off to the public and had to wait in line at the grocery store around the corner which had a pretty gnarly bathroom.

New additions to help with the reduction of water evaporation

We came here years ago, long before we had a need for landscaping. And forgot all about them. But honestly, if you want simply to see beautiful plants grouped artistically for a Zen moment or inspiration, this is your place. Our bio-pond is losing water to evaporation daily (well, it is windy and sunny). Plants are going to be our saving grace. Not only are they needed to filter, their coverage will keep the wind from wicking away at expensive water. We looked and called locally until Tilden Park's Native Here nursery suggested Berkeley Horticulture to supply us. It was literally amazing to see pond and bog plants that no one else has. And plants we bought out of the County are being offered at almost comparable prices. BH feels a little pricy to me, but it is Berkeley and considering how healthy the plants are and we weren't given a colony of mosquitoes with them is pretty good. Now the aquatic section is just one section of many. Check out their website. There's a map showing all the details. And days and hours too.

The plants there are beautiful, and the owner (Dom) has the friendliest dog and bunny to keep you company during your shopping trip. I've bought a few plants from there over the years, and she usually gives a few tips for your plant before you leave (or a warning if they're more temperamental). Last year, we were going to try to bulk order plants from Pamana Plantas for our wedding, but to our surprise found out that they provide event services! We were able to work with Dom to design centerpieces and an altar for our wedding. We had given her really vague guidelines to what we wanted and some of our color schemes, and she was able to create a mood board and help us pin down our vision. She was so easy to work with and helped us stay in budget by offering multiple solutions at different price points between purchasing and renting. Super recommend working with them if you're looking for more sustainable wedding flower alternatives.

I guess I wasn't feeling it at the time to spend money at a place that looked similar to what one might see in the old TV series, "Sanford & Son" back in the days. However, yesterday I did a returned trip with my two GF's to browse and yes, there were a few items that perked my interest. There is a saying..."what's one man's junk is another man's treasure". Since there is no such thing as a 3.5 star rating for this unique place on Gilman Street where you can buy, sell, trade, and/or consign items, I have decided to go with a three star. There is a big difference in presentation of the items on hand compared to what you see in huge and/or luxurious department stores. Entering the bazaar you can browse and shop with no pressure. Though there is clutter all around, it is to be expected at an outdoor gypsy flea market with an assortment of gently used clothes (sweaters - $9 each or $15 for two), knick/knacks, plates, glasswares, toys (games, stuffed animals, etc.), baskets, ceramic items, even crystal ware. They even carry used books, albums, VHS movie tapes. Some of the items are a little pricey, such as the nice crystal candy jar with lid for $24. (The last time I bought one of those was over 15 years ago and it was $10 at the old Emporium in Downtown Oakland.) At a bazaar, prices on items are negotiable, but you can't do that in a department store. Sometimes the stuffiness of department stores and overbearing sales associates are not my "cup of tea"; thus, I find an outdoor bazaar is somewhat relaxing and soothing as a cup of tea.

But the real problem is the on-staff employee, clearly not the owner. Didn't catch his name before I was so insulted by his behavior that I escorted my mom out and left that cheesy nightmare. He deflected all responsibility and refused to move the rug. I told him to watch out because next time, someone might sue. He promptly accused me of threatening to sue and he "was way too smart to get caught up in that. You be fishing to sue or something." No, actually, I was saying do something proactive before the next injury sustained was more serious. He walked away from me claiming, "Not my problem. I'm not the owner." When I attempted to call the listed phone number to contact the owner, the number does *not* accept incoming calls. Um...all a bit sketchy. So, when shopping at Bazaar Gilman, watch your step and your back...
