Was walking around the neighborhood for exercise and stumbled upon this nifty hidden gem! This out-of-the-way nursery is all open-air, and makes for a really nice destination to browse a vast selection of native plants. The nursery has everything from perennials to shrubs to small budding trees. There were two employees present when I visited. One was watering the plants and another popped up from a fenced off area in the back to greet us after a while. I didn't purchase anything, but I saw some sweet looking yarrows so I'll probably be back in the future! All in all, a nice place in Berkeley to go to if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Berkeley. Just be wary of the loud freight trains that roll by because the nursery is right by some train tracks.

It's a great spot if you're looking to grow your own food or just enjoy a calm walk through nature. There's a section for indoor houseplants, but it's a bit limited. Most of the options are Succulent plants and hardier varieties, so if you're looking for a large variety of tropicals or more delicate indoor plants, you might not find much--though there is a separate indoor plant area that was closed off during our visit. You'll definitely notice the fertilizer smell when you walk in--not overwhelming, but something to be aware of if you're sensitive. Still, the overall atmosphere is relaxing and grounding. It's a really lovely spot to explore, especially if you enjoy gardening or just want a nature-filled reset. Heads-up for allergy sufferers: with all the plants, pollen, and earthy air, you may want to plan accordingly. We didn't directly interact with the staff, but they seemed friendly and helpful, assisting other guests as I walked by. Parking: There's plenty of side street parking available in the surrounding neighborhood, and a few spots right in front of the entrance. I went to the front and offered to take the CDs they were sending to the landfill. I stated I had boxes with me - the staff seemed amenable however when the manage Claudio was asked he overruled them and stated "no" - the CDs are now on the landfill - I have a machine to resurface discs, a press to flatten creased artwork and thousands of cases - however a company who's catch phrase is "zero waste" dumped" thousands of perfectly salvageable items. I contacted Urban Ore via email, via messaging and tagged them in social media as well as posting on their own FB page - no response. People donate items to Urban Ore thinking they think they are keeping them out of the landfill - the behavior of Claudio shows that this is a lie and Urban Ore appears to be a scam.

They even have scrap glass for mosaic or stained glass projects. We ended up purchasing some drum rings, as well as an awesome tote bag for just five bucks. The line at the front counter gets long at times, but it moves quickly with helpful workers making sure everything goes smoothly. You can even cut the line if you're paying with cash. No returns are allowed on items such as electronics and clothing. Dogs are welcome inside, with countless signs posted noting that it's not a poop and pee zone. There's also a sign near the toy section stating "unattended children will be given candy and a free puppy."
