Mediocre stereotypical old man haircuts at best, with no ability to provide fades. Asked for a low #2 fade and was told that they could 100% do a fade. What I ended up with was a buzz cut on the sides, no blending or fade, just high and tight. This style of haircut is probably ok for some, but it certainly isn't a fade. Don't come here expecting to get a fade despite them assuring you that they can give fades. read more

Lots of other places in town are only "first come, first serve" which is fine if you have all afternoon to wait and are OK with maybe not getting a cut. They don't cut longer hair apparently. My son showed up on time for his appointment today and was turned away. He was told by the person he had an appointment with that he wouldn't be able to cut his hair. Perhaps it would be a good idea for wsbs to make that more clear on their site. MACK's fade ability is absolute TRASH! Ended up with 2 distinct transfer lines. No blending. Was told it was the shape of my head that was creating the effect. Just moved to Bend a couple months ago and have finally found my new spot! I enjoyed a "Sweet As" ale while Lindsay administered a perfect haircut! Conversation was great, everyone was super friendly, and the space is fantastic! Terrible service. One of their barbers had great reviews so I made an appointment with her almost 3 weeks in advance. A few days before my appointment I received notice that they had switched me to a different barber. I needed a haircut so badly that I went anyway. My GPS took me to the wrong address. This shop may be beloved by guys, but if you're a woman, even if you have quite short hair and are willing to have your hair cut the way they want to cut it, they just really don't want to deal with you at all. Even if they say you can make an appointment and come in, when they see you, especially if you're not young and fit, you are turned away. Very humiliating. Not recommended. read more

He never asked what kind of cut to give my little kid, he just went straight for the Aryan Nation look. We scheduled two haircuts online, for 11 and 1130 with Mac. We got there a little early, 1032 to be exact, and checked in to see if they could get us started early (there were open chairs and buys standing around). Mac told us he had an appointment before us, no problem, we walked around the area and came back right before 11. He still had a guy in his chair, so we waited outside. At 11:14, almost 15 minutes after our appt time, he stepped outside and said he was ready. He then proceeded to give us a hard time for not booking the right type of haircut online (30 min vs 45... everywhere else I've got they only take 30) and then said that we should also try to show up on time! We were there early!!!! And waited for him for 15 minutes after our scheduled appointment. We decided to leave and never actually got a haircut there. The other barbers had full schedules, so we may have gotten the unpopular barber which makes sense now that we've had this experience. Rude and unprofessional. I'd look somewhere else or for a different barber before booking here. read more

I've been getting haircuts regularly at West Side Barber Shop for the last four or five years and would recommend the shop to anyone looking for a high-quality cut in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. I've seen three or four different barbers over that course of time, but I know I can always count on great service (and a free beer!) in a timely manner, with the cut and the included neck shave, hot towel, and back massage usually taking between 35-45 mins. The staff are always willing to chat and get to know you better and seem equally comfortable letting you enjoy whatever cool old movie is on the TV. The availability for walk-ins is tough as this is getting to be a popular spot; I typically book online now, where I've always been able to find a slot within a day or so. Best haircut I've ever received. Moving is never fun. Lots to do and no time to think about the small stuff--like how hard it was to find your last good barber!! We recently moved back to Bend after being away for several years. Obviously the entire city is different with all of its growth. My old bend barber has long since moved away so I set out on the adventure of yelping and trying new barbers. First let me say that I'm not picky with the style or really the outcome of a haircut, but I am picky with the attention to detail and the amount of effort and apparent passion a barber puts/has in their work. It's hard to find that barber who, after 15 haircuts that day, is still passionate about making yours look the very best he can make it. Onto the adventure. I first tried one of the downtown names that have been around the longest. You sit down, they cut cut cut and send you on your way in 10-15 minutes. Mediocre at best. I walked away thinking about how I missed my old barber who spent an hour on my head. Not that I asked for one, but that he always put in a full hour because he wanted every hair perfect and he loved his job. A month later I tried this same shop but a different barber. Terrible. Under 10 minutes and I was out of my chair with what looked like a crew cut/flat top/marine in boot camp. I asked for a professional business accepting faux hawk. It's a fairly short cut, tapered heavily on the sides, and it has a little extra on top which comes to somewhat of a messy point. Another month later I tried another barber in town and came out with a lopsided head. Annoyed, I walked out wondering if I should just take a quick trip every month to my old barber. That would be silly I told myself and thought about shaving my head or growing it out :) Two months later (notice I started neglecting my appearance in fear of the next bad haircut), I decided to try West Side Barber Shop. I read the reviews and snooped on the reviewers profiles to see if they had any kind of style. I especially read the 1 star review they have about being slow (deal with it pal. It's a barber shop!!). That individual sounded like he wrote the review after a bad day so I chalked it up to just that and called The West Side Barber Shop. Travis (owner) answered the phone, a very calm voice, took my name and number and said he'd call me 20 minutes before an opening. He did and I headed up to NW Crossing where he's located. I entered the shop, he asked if I was Peter and then offered me a quality beer. I politely said no thank you. Beer at noon on a Thursday sounds like an issue :-). Jokes were made in the shop along with some serious talk which everyone felt welcomed in and in 15 minutes I was in my chair. I gave him a two liner description of the haircut and he proceeded without details from me (on purpose--this is a test). Chatting commenced. We very comfortably learned about each other's life history. You know how it's awkward in a barber chair when it becomes silent? Either you sit still and let them do their job or you become friends with them. Any middle ground is very uncomfortable. Well, this was easy with Travis. *55 minutes later*, I got up from the best haircut I think I've ever gotten. He paid attention. He loved his job. He cared. read more

I brought my son in for the first time and got the older of the two ladies on the far end. I walked over to the chair and was casually making conversation with my son, totally away from the chair and her work area, and the lady politely said "you can go sit down"?? Caught off guard, I clarified, "so you don't want me to stand here?" She looked at me and dropped a very solid "No." What? That was one of the weirder moments i've experienced in terms of adult interactions. Not looking for awkward orders at the barber shop and pretty sure I can stand where I'd like especially when my child is in the chair? The cut was good but took 3x's as long so I'm not sure how comfortable she was. Great concept for a Barber Shop, who doesn't love a beer, casual barber shop and to not have to make an appointment? I'm completely down with this concept and its too bad that it has not worked out for over two weeks trying to get my hair cut with Travis. Unfortunately, Travis's reliability to be in his own barber shop or to quote reasonable time frames on when he will cut your hair make getting a hair cut more difficult than actually making an appointment. On several occasions, Travis has quoted an hour wait and then it turns out to be over two hours. Be sure you don't have any other plans that day if you want to get your hair cut by Travis. Travis will also call to tell you he will be ready for you in half an hour "so head on down" but then you will likely wait another 15 to 20 minutes beyond that half hour once you get there. I have tried to get a hair cut with him five times in the past two weeks and it hasn't worked out due to him not sticking to his own hours or running way over the time frames he quotes. I was in his barber shop two of the five times and had to leave because I had other appointments that I had to go to (which were hours away from when I first called). Other times his partners have said "Oh, he just left" or he is "sick" but he'll be back tomorrow. Basically, I love the concept and if I could call up and know within an hour of when Travis could actually cut my hair, he would still have my business. However, given the fact that there isn't a hint of reliability or hearing something I can trust, I will go back to making appointments to get my haircut that I can count on. read more

He actually was scolding me for coming in to the shop! Sorry, I didn't realize you needed an appointment. His tone and attitude were the problem. Reality check. Step outside and double check your numbers on your business. It doesn't say, "Rodeo Drive Beverly Hills!" It's Bend, Oregon! Here's how it should have been handled. "Good morning, I'm sorry but I'm all booked up today. I appreciate you coming in. Please take my number and make an appointment. Look forward to seeing you." Simple, professional, and courteous. My husband received his second haircut today from Bryan. The first time was great (hence the 2nd star). Who doesn't enjoy a beer while their hair is being cut after a long day at work! Well be prepared for a side of discrimination with that beer! My husband has his medical cannabis card for a medical condition. (Not that that is ANYONES business)! He sat down in Bryan's chair after a 10hr day at work and asked for a beer. At which Bryan's response was "well if you didn't reek of weed then I could get you one" Excuse me?!! That is just plain rude and discriminatory. By that statement he assumed a lot about my husbands character without cause. Then proceeded to give him a mediocre haircut that now he has to go get fixed elsewhere. Tell me Bryan..who was really the high one? I have had an excellent experience every time I go to West Side Barber Shop. I am greeted with a friendly smile and promptly sat down for a haircut. The staff always offers me a cold beef or a warm coffee depending on the time of day I arrive. The attention to detail in their work is second to none and quick. I'm in and out within my lunch hour usually. The atmosphere of the shop reminds me of 60 years ago with a little modern amenities added.
