I had an excellent experience shopping at West Seattle Runner. Yes, I'm guilty of buying shoes online, but sometimes you need to shop in-person to get the correct shoes for your feet! The store is located in the Admiral district, across the street from Hiawatha Playfield. They are on the ground level of the Orion Building, with plenty of free street parking nearby. I just walked into the store and someone started helping me immediately. I could tell she was a runner and had tons of experience, so I felt comfortable trusting her guidance. In addition to measuring my feet, she also watched me walk (without shoes on) to analyze my gait. She gave me several brands/styles to try on and asked for my input after each one. I selected two pairs and I'm happy with my purchase. I think the price I paid was close to the online price and I am glad that I can support a local business instead. They also have a loyalty program, so if you spend a certain amount of money, you get a discount for the next year. In addition to being a retail store, West Seattle Runner is also involved in the local community. For example, they offer free weekly running groups and events with physical therapists. I'm a big supporter of local businesses but in this case it backfired on me. I'd always bought my shoes at Super Jock n Jill in Greenlake, but tried the local shoe store in search of some new Hokas, excited as I'd never owned any before. The sales guy was interestingly high pressure to sell me larger sizes than I'd ever worn. He measure my feet and assured me I now needed 10.5 and I'd never owned anything larger than 8. He convinced me it was the right thing to do. Imagine running with clown shoes, that's how my Hokas feel when I run. I'll not go back, and would kindly steer you to other outlets. I couldn't be happier with my time in store and the shoes I was fitted with. I got there right when they opened so one of the owners helped me out. Measured me up and brought out options until we both agreed on the fit. I don't know that I've ever been happier with a pair of running shoes. I was active Army for 20 years and pounded a lot of pavement. Shoes didn't matter to me then as I was young and spry. Now that I'm older and the score is catching up, footwear and injury prevention really matter. The owner asked about my experience running, my injuries and what my goals were before fitting me. Super patient when I rejected some shoes based only on look (I'm not a diva, but...). I felt zero pressure to purchase anything. When I was checking out she dropped in a military discount. As a point of pride I never ask for this or even mention military. Turns out the other owner, her husband, is a prior Department of the Navy (Men's Division if you ask them) service member (Marine Corps). I didn't have any crayons to offer, but I'll be sure to bring some in next time in case he's hungry :) Bottom line: This is an outstanding local business that is both local owned and veteran owned. The staff was incredibly friendly, and Ferguson was probably the most well-informed shoe specialist I've ever met. He carefully assessed how I walk, explained how different shoes fit different feet, and how they are meant to be worn. Ferguson also provided excellent recommendations for taking care of my ankle from a shoe and support perspective while I'm away on vacation. They have a machine to analyze your feet, then they'll bring out the best options and have you try them on. You'll walk and jog back and forth while their team looks at your gait, your ankles, knees, and hips to finalize their recommendation. Once you pick a shoe, they'll bring out all the color options so you can match your style. This whole thing took like 15 or 20 minutes. I recently stopped into West Seattle Runner for the first time to get some help on selecting the right pair of shoes for walking and rowing, especially since I have bad knees and ankles. Despite being near to closing time, one of the employees, Dirk, was incredibly helpful and kind in doing a quick gait analysis and giving me some feedback on my current shoes and another pair that might work better. I had recently developed some pretty bad runners toe, and went to West Seattle Runners looking for solutions. They examined my feet and worked with me through many pairs of shoes to find the right pair. Running shoes should be a size bigger than your feet, and I left with something 2.5 sizes larger than what I was wearing. I thought they felt to big but I was willing to trust the process. I took them on a treadmill run the next day and it was awful--so why the 5-star review you may ask? I went straight from the treadmill back to the store where I met Tim (one of the owners) and told him about the shoes. He took them back and then re-worked the whole process with me. He told me that while on paper the shoes I bought should have been perfect and he understood why they were recommended, due to certain things about my feet they were not perfect and that was okay. He listened, and at the end of the day I wound up with a wonderful pair of shoes (to be honest the ones I had been running in previously)--just a size and 1/2 bigger than where I had started. I appreciated that although the system said I should be a touch bigger than what I bought he said there is what is recommended and then what feels good for you and on your body. He listened to my history as an athlete (he actually asked what sports I did as a kid) and said that because of how those shoes are supposed to fit I want that from my running shoe (makes sense) even though running shoes should fit differently. What I appreciate is he didn't force me to do the size or shoe he felt was right for me. He offered the advice based on his experience, listened to my feedback and met me where I am at. Whatever happened to friendly neighborhood customer service? As a longtime West Seattle resident, I love to support our local businesses and choose local over online shopping as much as I can. This weekend I stopped by West Seattle Runner with my daughter to get her foot measured. They explained they have a high-tech fitting service and I said no thanks, I just wanted to put her foot into one of those metal measuring things. We could have gone to Target but I thought, let's go to the local shop and maybe something catches our eye while we're there, or they might talk us into a great pair of shoes, or in any case we'll get better service than at Target. Even if we weren't planning to make a purchase today, we are a customer in the door to gain or retain, and being helpful and friendly goes a long way to getting me back in the door next time. (I have purchased socks and shoes from WSR in the past as well). Instead, the woman who seemed to be in charge made it clear that if we were not there to make a purchase in that moment, we were to be dismissed and made to feel like we were doing something wrong. She gave quite a bit of attitude when I asked a single question about the measurements on the tool and so out we walked, and we won't be back! Really disappointed to learn that a beloved locally owned, woman-owned business would treat people this way. Seems to me like a very shortsighted way to do business! read more

Wow! I have not been able to stop talking about this place with all my co-workers. We all complain that we are in pain: foot, knee, & back...ever since I got new walking shoes, I have been so comfortable at work. We spend about 10 hours a day on our feet on an unforgiving concrete floor. They measured my feet and arches and then I was offered a few choices for my feet. I was in pain for a few more days while my feet adjusted to proper support, but now I don't even think about my feet or any pain, because I feel great. The staff seems well trained in the fitting process as different ones use the same process. However, they don't take customer input well, e.g.: I have narrow feet and my foot floats in these shoes. Probably because it seems they no longer carry narrow width shoes. Inefficient to stock them? But the worst part is the ageist, sexist manager who took over my fitting after the first staff member left working with me to work with a friend who came in. He was condescending and made comment that the shoes would work well for me in a given situation because his aunt "of a similar age" liked them. When I returned the shoes the next day, as they were too wide to be supportive, and told him I didn't appreciate his comment, he informed me that he was NOT inappropriate in any way and offered no apology of any kind. So, if you are a woman of a certain age and don't like condescension, then don't bother shopping here. He did haughtily give me a card for the owner, but she never returned my call. I'm not a runner, but I am a walker, and I finally got the courage to come in and ask about new walking shoes as my Runkeeper app told me my walking shoes were woefully past their prime (based on miles walked). I was really impressed with the staff. They were attentive and helpful and had a neat thing to stand on that gave insight to my stance and I was able to pick a new pair of shoes quickly and efficiently. Since I was out on a walk I didn't have my wallet and their Apple Pay can't accept Amex without a physical card, I had no way to pay but they held the shoes for me until I could come back, which I appreciated. They will even take the used shoes and donate them to an organization that helps less fortunate people. High end walking shoes don't have a low price point so it wasn't cheap, but no more expensive than ordering directly from Hoka or Brooks, etc. I definitely appreciated being able to try all the shoes on and get their recommendations because they know a ton about walking shoes! read more

I needed a new pair of shoes and my husband suggested I go to West Seattle Runner to get fitted. I walk 3-4 miles a day, but I don't usually *run,* so the idea of going to a store geared towards runners (i.e, people more athletic than me) seemed a little silly to me. Nonetheless, I'd never been professionally fitted before, and after striking out with the random shoe options I'd picked out myself, I gave it a try. Ferguson greeted me at the store and made me feel comfortable right away. He had me walk the length of the store in my socks so he could analyze my gait, then brought out 4-5 options for me to try. I tested each pair, walking around the store, and settled on a pair of New Balances. His gait analysis was really informative -- I had no idea that one foot is slightly longer than the other and I have flat arches. Also, I didn't know that I needed a shoe a whole size bigger than the size I measured. A couple of walks on the treadmill over the weekend and I realized the New Balances weren't going to work out. I came back again a few days later, explained the issues I was having, and Ferguson used that feedback to find me a new pair of shoes. He let me return the other pair for a full refund. I really appreciated Ferguson's help and his patience as I settled on the perfect shoes. I wore them today on a 3 mile walk and they were so comfortable. I cannot thank your store enough. I have plantar fasciitis and have been struggling with debilitating pain for years and seeking solutions. The young woman that helped me did an amazing job. She recommended a pair of Hoka shoes designed to help plantar fasciitis and made sure to take the time to get the perfect fit. She also recommended a pair of sandals to help with foot recovery after I take long walks, as well as to wear when home to protect and help heal my feet. I've been to WS Runner a couple times for new shoes and the consultation process has been great both times. Most recently I went on their 9th anniversary weekend and even though it was super busy, they still took care of me and made sure I got the right fit. The associate, Justine, was amazing actually! I came in only 15 min before close, but she stayed with me 30 min past their closing hours to ensure I had the right shoes. I was not expecting that level of service, but I'm super glad I got it as having the right fit is essential for any distance runner. I could tell Justine was there to honestly help me, not just doing it "for a job." She knows her stuff about the different brands, features, and even nuances between lacing styles and fit! About 10 years ago I learned the importance of buying quality running shoes, the hard way by hurting my foot. Since then, I don't mess around and always go to West Seattle Runner when I start to feel that inevitable foot pain that comes when your shoes start breaking down too much. The employees here CARE about making sure you find a good shoe. They ask you questions about your activity level, foot problems, take measurements, and have you test and try on multiple shoes to make sure the shoe you buy is the right one. They keep notes for you on what shoes you bought and when, so you never have to try and remember that shoe you loved from two years ago. They treat everyone that comes in with care and respect and attention, no matter your fitness level or need. Two years ago I bought a shoe that just didn't feel right when I wore it a few times. I took it back and they refunded me, even though it was worn and unsellable, and found me the right shoe. Bottom line, the kind of service you get here is phenomenal and honestly pretty rare in this world. If you are someone who cares about shopping locally, this is probably the best small business in West Seattle to support. They are local owners. I see them in West Seattle all the time and they've created something really special here, with how they treat their customers and support our community with running clubs and being a presence at local races. I stopped in the other day to get fitted for a new pair of running shoes. I'm new to running but my old athletic shoes were causing a bit of pain in my heel. Even though the store was pretty full, someone checked in with me pretty quickly to see what I was looking for. The husband and wife owner team are both runners who know how to fit shoes to runners (and to-be and would-be runners, too). They, along with their well-trained, knowledgeable employees, take the time to ensure a perfect fit--I think I went through 8 different pairs and two special orders before finding the right one for me! The best landmark for the store is the now-closed PCC grocery store that's in the process of being turned into a low-rise apartment complex. Recently signed up for my first half marathon and realized I probably shouldn't continue running on my 2 year-old shoes. I've been training with a running group hosted by WSR, so I figured it'd be appropriate to take my business to them since they've kindly offered so many free workshops, seminars and gave tons of pointers to the group. Lori spent WAAAY more time helping me than I even thought fair, bringing out pair after pair of shoes to judge my comfort level after doing a quick gait analysis. A couple hours later I went home with a new pair of Brooks (in what I like to call "OMG Orange!"), a foam roller and some other swag. She was incredibly patient with my indecisiveness. I was pleasantly surprised that the prices didn't feel "Local Shop" upcharged, and I absolutely didn't financially regret not going to some big box store for a better deal (with lesser service, obviously). WORST customer service experience I've hand in a very long while, I wish zero stars was an option. My husband and I live in the neighborhood and prefer to keep things local when possible. Upon first visit they seemed to be helpful, even offering to order the running shoe we were looking for that they didn't have in stock. Fast fwd a week to when my husband called to check the status of the shoe and the owner said his wife handles the ordering and he didn't have access to her password to check the order. Hmmmmm here's an idea, it's your wife, ask her. Then they never returned the call checking on the order and we had to call back only to learn they had not been ordered. For some reason my husband gave them another shot to order - fast fwd another week, they ordered the WOMENS shoe not the MENS that my husband had ordered. They offered to order again (I would have been done but my husband went back in). No one called to alert us the shoes were in, we had to call. I just came to pick them up and the owner (the husband) was the one that helped me and couldn't even find the order. Once he finally located it he told me they ordered the wrong shoe and that he meant to call to tell us. Seriously. How are you in biz. You didn't just mess up once but several times and then couldn't even communicate with us about. How is a store like this in biz? And honestly the selection they do have is awful. Sorry, we tried to keep it local and now we are weeks and weeks in on these running shoes (which we don't have) when we could have just ordered from the co directly and had them weeks ago. Never again. If you like crap service and owners who struggle at best to run a biz where you the customer suffers b/c of their lack of knowledge on biz ownership, go ahead and shop here. If you aren't into your time being wasted and actually enjoy receiving the item you purchase, I suggest you go else where. This store is a complete joke and a waste of time. Yup, I'm a mother and a consumer and a part of this community and yes, I was able to multitask and bring my children on my errands with me. This particular errand was a waste of my time and easily could have been avoided had you, oh I don't know, picked up a phone to call us and communicate the error in our order and explain you didn't actually have the shoes after all this time. It's a funny thing a telephone and communication, it goes a long way, maybe next time you'll give it a try and have a less annoyed customer on your hands. You failed at communicating with us at every turn and we had to keep reaching out to you to see what was going on with our order. In addition, yes this was my first time in your store. My first time, meaning there is nothing else for me to compare this disaster of an experience to and based off my interactions with you (and my husbands) we would never come back again and I'd encourage others in the community to seek their running needs elsewhere. So if you did donate the shoes, good for you on doing a nice thing but I guess no one will ever really know if that happened or if it was just you trying to save face from this PR nightmare. God knows you did NOTHING to try and right the issue while I was in your store today. NOTHING. How did I not review West Seattle Runner? I find it crazy that my favorite running store in all of Seattle says I didn't review them. Well, I just simply have to say that Tim and Lori and Myrtle and their employees are such a wonderful addition to our little community. They bring people together through running, help athletes (and non athletes) through running. They offer many running group options for all levels of fitness. I have been shopping at West Seattle Runner since they first opened and must say they are one of the top stores in West Seattle. I do think I may need yet another pair of shoes. I have a condition called Raynaud's syndrome and it causes my fingers and toes to turn blue and completely become dead and numb. The only way to alleviate this is to dip my limbs in hot water ugh! The cold affects this condition so it has been very uncomfortable to go walking or jogging in the Winter because my feet become numb. Not cool! I decided to invest in a good pair of running shoes. I went to my local WSR and met Ferguson. He spent about 40 min with me fitting me, talking with me and performing postural analysis. We found the perfect shoe and surprisingly enough they are cute too. Ferguson took very good care of me and I am super happy with my shoes. It is definitely an investment,but well worth it. Love this place. I'm just getting serious about running, and after a bad experience at the Brooks flagship store near my office I decided to try my neighborhood running store. Night and day difference. WS Runner associates take their job very seriously and are committed to ensuring their customers are happy and healthy runners. The experience was great. The sales person took a loot at my old shoes, measured my foot, made note of my high instep, etc. She knew a ton about the shoes WS Runner carries and we cycled through about 5 pairs of shoes before finding the right shoe. She watched me run in them, made note of how the shoes laced and material fit across my feet, and really educated me on running footwear, inspiring confidence in my eventual purpose. Jeklly and Hyde experience, unfortunately. When I first went to the store, I had a very helpful woman who asked about by needs, gave me a few options and found a pair that worked for me. The service provided was what one would expect for an independent shoe store. Prices are not warehouse or online level, of course, and I don't have an issue with that, buying locally and getting the level of service one would expect. My wife had gone in a month later and received the same consistent service from this person. Kudos. Consistency. Both of us happy. With the weather turning, my wife decided to get a pair of shoes more conducive to the weather. A gentleman assisted her during the week and after finding the pair she needed, they didn't have stock, but would reorder. The gentleman stated that they would arrive Sunday or Monday. When she went in after the weekend, it's possible it may be in a box that arrived in the stockroom, but that many people mis-hear him in that they order on Monday, which was condescending, especially when you stated they would arrive on Sunday or Monday, not that you would order them on Monday. He didn't seem to want to volunteer to check the shipment in the back, but I think realized my wife wasn't just going to leave it at that, so he begrudgingly went to the back and found her shoes. He presented the shoes and asked if she wanted to try them on first, which she did. He made zero effort in customer service, other than explaining how good a pair of shoes they were. The shoes, like usual, were not laced. He did not offer to lace them and watched my wife lace them up herself, which is extremely disappointing from a customer service standpoint. I was desperate to get running shoes- and with the COVID outbreak shoes are hard to get online (so I found out). Not only did Tim and Lori respond to my inquiry- they delivered my shoes to my door- at NO COST. (I assume this is temporary so I don't want to advertise as normal).
