The hair and makeup... potentially one of the most stressful aspects of the wedding day. Unlike the dress, which you've tried on many times and can pretty much count on how it's going to look, the hair and makeup are subject to the vagaries of the weather and the good memory of your stylist from the "trial run". Scary stuff. You need to trust the person in whose hands you choose to place this responsibility. A lot. I was shocked to see that the West End Salon & Spa did not have any previous reviews on yelp. This place is seriously fantastic. If you are getting married anywhere on the north shore, one of the first things on your to-do list should be to make an appointment with Angie at West End. I recently got married in Gloucester , and waited longer than planned to address the issue of wedding hair. Since we are not from the area (and this geographic region is woefully sparse in yelp reviews), I relied on Google searches, and was relieved when I found the West End was willing to squeeze me in for a trial appointment 3 weeks before the wedding. However, i figured i would keep looking for other options until my appointment, because, really, what are the odds of finding someone great with such a quick search? From the moment i walked into the salon, I felt that I had gotten very lucky. The decor is tasteful, homey and funky all at once. The staff seemed wonderful - not a touch of the snotty attitude you see in some salons. It kind of feels like everyone is family, but also not in the bad way that you see in cheaper places where they are yelling across the salon to each other all day. This truly feels like Newbury St at a fraction of the price - the holy grail of the spa consumer. Angie, the owner, took a look at my Eva Longoria-inspired wedding 'do photo and got to work. Within 30 minutes or so she had perfectly executed exactly what I wanted. The girl is a genius with bobby pins and a curler! Anyway, it was perfect - I loved it as soon as she was done, and she even made suggestions for a few small tweaks that made me like it even better. It was clear that she understood the vision of what I was looking for. The makeup was just as great... I was introduced to mineral foundation, which i worried would not give enough coverage for such a photo-intensive event, but it looked so flawless that I immediately went out and invested in my own to use everyday. Here again, it was clear that Angie understood that I did not want anything too over-the-top, and the palette and style she chose fit my personality perfectly. On the day before my wedding, I was back at West End for a mani pedi. That was definitely the point where my stress was at an all time high, but the calming demeanor of Jan, who did my nails, proved to be just the thing I needed. She is truly a lovely woman and took her time to do a fabulous job on my nails. Two hours later, I emerged calm and relaxed (not the ideal for a lunch-hour trip, but in this case it was great). On the day of the wedding, Angie came out to the inn with one of her employees (I wish I could remember her name, because she was also great). Angie recreated my earlier look just perfectly, and all four of my bridesmaids ended up with beautiful up-dos themselves. Just as I'd noticed in my trial, she never made us feel rushed (which means a lot on such a stressful day). I truly could not have asked for a better experience, and the wedding party agreed. I enjoyed my experience with West End Salon so much that I am making the hour drive back there this coming weekend to try out their eyelash extension service. I've been interested to try this for awhile, and the prices here are incredibly reasonable compared to places nearer to the city. I will post an update! Overall, if you live in the North Shore area, or are planning a wedding there, I would heartily recommend a visit - truly a place that deserves your business! read more

She exceed my expectations. Recently, the salon messed up 2 appointments of mine, which was very frustrating as I travel an hour from work to get there and have to arrange my work schedule to make those appointments. It was very frustrating to arrive and find that second appointment was also cancelled. I expressed my frustration and walked out the door. I received a pleading phone message from the owner, Angie, to come back and she'd have someone take care of me. I didn't respond. I sent an email cancelling my next appointment. Today, I received an email to confirm that appointment, so I emailed again indicating I had already cancelled. I received an extremely and childishly nasty email from Angie, the owner, accusing of me swearing in the salon, which did not happen, and to not book there again. As if I would. I would recommend people not book there. The owner is unprofessional. After posting this, I received scathing, insulting, vicious emails from the owner, Angie. Every email, she'd add another layer of lies so it became this major thing. It was a fairly quick incident that lasted less than a minute and she's made a daytime drama out of it. In correcting her falsehoods, I also tried to help her "see the light" about what she could improve but she just kept spewing venom. Go anywhere but West End Salon. read more

I decided to go here for my bridal updo as it was the only North Shore establishment i could find that had any sort of reviews (and I was going off of just the 2 reviews on yelp at the time that ranged from good-bad, but it was better than nothing). What I liked about this place was that I never felt pressured to have a trial session, which was nice as I didnt have the time or $ to travel so far for a trial. What I didnt like was whenever I called and they heard I was the bride, I was then told I had to only speak with Angie - however, this always subsequently resulted in playing phone tag for several days. The day of the wedding, we were running about 10 mins late because our rehearsal was the morning of but only a couple miles away, but the receptionist threatened that it would cut into our appointment times, and essentially threatening that our hair may not come out the way we want it to. Then as we were driving there, I got another call from Angie again reprimanding us for being a few minutes late and again cant guarantee how we'll turn out. Weird, as I've heard from several others that things commonly are not on time on your wedding day. You'd think that if this place does weddings often, it would do a better job of not adding to the wedding day stress. I could understand their perspective, but they didnt need to verbalize their thoughts and threaten us. In terms of the actual hair style - Angie did a good job of recreating what I wanted from the photos I gave her - it was a bit more poofy and higher than I wanted, but she was good about trying to alter it a bit. 2 of the other bridesmaids hair looked nice, however a 3rd bridesmaid (who had a separate appt time than us, so was not part of those of us who were late) hair looked great, however, for the rest of the day, random pins would fly out of her hair! As it came to the end of our hour and waiting for our ride - I saw no signs of the next appointment being prompt, so not quite sure what all the pressure of keeping it to the hour was all about. I would recommend future brides look around some more in terms of other salon choices. The end result hair style and the cost was ok, but the experience before hand was not what I would recommend. read more

This review is specifically for the henna tattoo service. I had one henna tattoo applied and despite following the directions given, it washed right off 4 hrs later. Then I went back the next day and the guy re-applied it. This time I went beyond the instructions and didn't get any water on it for over 24 hrs. When I showered, it washed off again, simply by me taking my fingers and rubbing on it mildly. I don't think the guy is using the right ink, or the right technique. She listens to what I want and does it...and if she doesn't think my idea is going to work or it isn't going to look good, she weighs in but not in in overbearing way. I trust her opinion. 2.She's really attentive to detail and never rushes. 3. She doesn't talk about her self or gossip. She will engage in conversation but she doesn't make small talk. 4. I always leave feeling like I had her full attention to my tresses, which she can transform bone straight and perfectly coiffed! P.S. She has a very dry sense of humor which I appreciate. read more

I used a groupon I had for a signature facial and Baraka did it on me. It was awesome, I do facials and this was done very professionally, I was able to relax, the products were gentle and high quality, I will go back for another! I decided to get a hair cut too while there, 1st time with Diane. She as been cutting hair for over 20 years. Angie is terrific! I have thick, wavy hair and have a difficult time finding a stylist who knows how to give me a good cut. She really listened to what I wanted and did an amazing job. Came here because of a recommendation from my sisters whom all go here. I live in CA, on a stay in MA for a short while & was way over due for a cut. At first I was apprehensive, I love my stylist back home. Marissa put me right at ease. She took the time to go over any likes, dislikes & what I would be happy with. This salon was recommended by a stylist when I was moving to Gloucester last year. The shop appears very high end and it made a good first impression. However I soon learned everything about this place is average at best. Angie, the owner did my hair and it was okay not great. I have a simple style and she whipped it out in 20 minutes. All the while paying more attention to her staff than my hair. Oddly I returned several times hoping the attention to detail would improve, the sociability would improve but nothing ever improved. I gave this business many tries, the last straw was when I asked for my bangs to be cut shorter and rather than shorten them she curled them under. When I got home and looked in the mirror my haircut was lopsided, about one inch shorter on one side. There are many salons in Gloucester, choose another! read more

I came here last year for my prom updo and was a little nervous because I had never been to this salon before and now I was trusting them with my prom hair. I had a million pictures on Pinterest, but then my phone didn't have service in downtown Gloucester so I couldn't show my stylist any of them. She was so accommodating and pulled out her phone for me to use to try and find pictures of what I wanted. She looked at the pictures and listened to me rather than just doing whatever, and I ended up with exactly the look I was going for. Not only was the experience extremely relaxing on a very stressful day, but my hair held all night long, even after getting rained on. I felt less stressed leaving than I felt going in, which I really appreciated. Overall a fantastic experience, and I'm heading back this year for another updo! read more

I got a haircut that I'm super happy with from Emily who was very sweet and attentive. I wanted a haircut with layers and a quirky bang and I got exactly what I described. I went to The West End Salon for a pedicure, and it's safe to say it was the second to worst "spa" experience I ever had. The worst was a back ally bikini wax I accidentally got mixed up with in San Francisco. I should of just hung up the phone, when I got the feeling the receptionist had never answered a telephone in a business before, but I thought maybe someone was in the bathroom, so I let it slide. I made an appointment, not on the day I was looking for, but on the next day. By the way, on the day I wanted they don't have a nail person, I'm pretty sure that was a Wednesday. When I arrived at the "spa" I was not greeted. I just stood there, awkwardly shifting for a few moments looking at the plastic sample cups that littered the floor. It turns out there was a woman watching some toddler there, and they were kicking the sample cups around the entry way, so I guess that's cool. Finally someone spoke to me, and I was waved to the back to choose my polish from about thirty shades. Again I just stood there a while, until the nail tech came with a bucket of lukewarm water and told me to have a seat. What followed was the worst pedicure ever had. It fell short in every aspect, and was painful at times. I probably would have been cool with the babysitter from early indiscreetly washing and styling her hair, if the service had been decent, but alas. In the end I paid for my mid-range pedicure, they have three tiers on most of their services, and walked out thinking, I got a much better pedicure, ten dollars cheaper, at the mall last month while I was killing time. I cannot say enough good things about my experience at the West End Salon. I had my wedding hair & makeup (as did my bridal party) done at the salon and everything was PERFECT. Working with Jan beforehand to set everything up was very easy, she was incredibly friendly and helpful. Diane did my hair, and my moms, and they both turned out AMAZING (exactly what I wanted!). Emily did my makeup and that turned out perfectly as well. Not only did everything go so well, it was all very affordable. Having had some issues with other vendors I used for my wedding, I was so grateful to the West End Salon for making this aspect of the wedding not only stress free, but quite enjoyable! I was in town for a wedding and booked a blowout- my stylist did a fantastic job, definitely as good as (if not better) than at a blow dry salon in Boston or New York. Not at all pleased with this place!!! I chose them for a hair and make up trial after seeing an updo in the Boston Bride Magazine from a Wedding Expo. Since I am not local to Gloucester, I was not aware of any local hairdressers and didn't want to get into paying someone a travel fee to come all the way out to Gloucester. We decided to go with West End Salon after checking out the website and seeing some of the work that they had posted. I didn't ever get a warm welcome or the kind of feeling you should get when you go in for your bridal hair trial. Angie was cold, not personable at all and sort of snobby. She did an ok job on my hair after talking me into something I didn't want... It came out ok, but at the end of the day I needed another trial. At our second trial, (which I had to pay another $45 for) I got the same feeling from her and it wasn't pleasant. I asked for a simple beach inspired curls and she did a great job, but after trying to talk me out of it again. My first make up trial went extremely well with Leah, but after she quit, I had to have another by a woman named Biraka? It was horrific!!!!! She has no idea what she is doing... she kept asking me if I remembered what colors the other girl used and after I told her no 3 times, she started to give us attitude. (It was somehow my fault that they lost the card with all the color info on it) Obviously not happy with how things were going, I asked her to simply just finish both eyes because I had to leave for another appointment. She started throwing brushes around and giving me an attitude. The owner, Angie, was within listening distance the whole time and never said a word. SOOO UNPROFESSIONAL!!! The only stress I have had planning my wedding was when I left West End Salon and only had 3 weeks to find a new place to go for both hair and make up. read more

I came here for a hair and makeup trial for my wedding as well as an eyebrow wax. The salon was recommended by one of my friends and after reading the reviews on Yelp, I thought "this is the place!" First up was the hair which was done by Angie. I brought in a couple photos and in just 20 minutes she had recreated what I wanted. She gave lots of advice on things that could be changed and made good suggestions. I had brought a flower for my hair that was really big so she went to the back and brought out a smaller one and let me keep it. This was the good part. Next was the eyebrow wax which technically should have come first and when I called to add it on, they said it would be last! At least the makeup person, B, had the sense to put this next. Now I have had many eyebrow waxes at many different salons and generally I tell them just to clean it up, not too thin. But B said my eyebrow hair grew down and there was no natural arch so she just sort of cleaned it up and my eyebrows looked a bit straight. She said she liked to start slow and then keep going which I thought was a good game plan. So after a look I said ok, maybe a little more with some arch. Next thing I know half my eyebrows are gone!! What happened to taking it slow?? Oh well, lesson learned, eyebrows grow back. It was then on to makeup. I had heard great things on mineral makeup and I don't have the best skin so I had high hopes. I don't wear much makeup and I said I just wanted something natural. B got to work brushing and powdering. I found it odd she did not curl my eyelashes but just coated on the mascara and eyeliner. Also they ran out of mascara and she tried to get out as much as she could from 2 bottles of Blinc before moving on to a regular mascara. Apparently they didn't have a new one to open? Then she handed me the mirror. AUGH!! I kid you not, the eyeshadow was up to my eyebrows which you remember were half gone. Also the mineral makeup which I thought was supposed to be light feeling looked like it was caked on. I didn't know what to say. There was no cheek definition. My face looked like a flat pancake with black eyes and bright lips. Finally I mentioned the eye makeup was too much so she got a wet cotton ball and attempted to rub it off. What, no makeup remover? So it was slightly (JUST slightly) better. But just... speechless. I know people might say, give them a chance to fix it. But I had no idea how it could be fixed except to take it all off. Now there were many other brides-to-be getting hair and makeup done and they looked really beautiful. I just don't know what happened! Eventually it was time to pay. At the front, they asked me if I wanted to schedule so I thought ok, maybe we'll at least do hair here. I asked the girl how long I should allot for 5 girls getting their hair done. She thinks about it.... "an hour?" An hour per person I said? I don't have 5 hours. She thinks about it again, looks at the computer, she is obviously perplexed. With all the weddings they seem to do you'd think she'd know general time frames. Finally she says there will be 5 stylists here that day so it will go quicker. Then she gets up to ask Angie. Then she comes back. She's still thinking, looking at the computer. Eventually she writes all my info down. So... that is that. I give 2 stars for the hair and 1 star for the prices and salon in general (clean, comfortable, etc). I showed the makeup pics to my friends and they said I looked like a ballroom dancer. I went for an eyebrow wax with Emily & was one of worst I've received. She was really rough - moving my head like I was an object, not a person. Room is dark, so couldn't assess when she held up mirror for me upon completion. Once I looked in my rearview mirror, ack! Uneven, took too much off of one side, completely missed other areas. Oh, and when I got up from the spa bed I noticed the blanket I was laying on had freshly cut hair (not mine!) all over it. Ick. One star for reception - very nice, and no waiting. read more

Wish I could write a review but because the servcie I wanted done couldn't be accomodated, I had to cancel the appointment. I called earlier in the week to have my hair done, a pedi and gel nails. Also, I was treating my daughter to a mani/pedi. The appointment was for 1:30 on a Saturday. I get a call that the nail tech. couldn't stay late to do my nails. Umm...it's a Saturday...you'd think the nail tech. would be there all day to provide that service. So there is my dilemma...the ONE service I really wanted done, couldn't be done. So I cancelled my appointment and will take my business else where. So I only give the one star for not being accomodating. read more

I was new in town and needed a my roots done and a haircut. The salon looked inviting. My hair was in excellent shape before the hairdresser turned it orange and frizzy. When I tried to get my money back the owner yelled at me!!! Stay away at all costs. read more

I'd give less then one star if I could.early in the year they took my name and what I wanted then they all a sudden said hold on another lady got on the phone and said actually we have no openings didn't even ask me if I'd like to rescue dual,,,then I just went and decided to try again for my wife I wanted to get her nalis done for Mother's Day they said there's no reason we can't get her in here tomorrow if it's just nails,I said yes it a surprise..All a sudden my wife's phone gets a call and they tell her no openings..This place is so far from proffesional. read more
