This is a great hair salon that is so hidden away it feels like a hidden gem. The salon is so clean and well spaced out all the stylists are really kind and it never feels overwhelming with hair dye smells (even when you are the one having your hair dyed.) They do a great job keeping your appointment on time and it is such a relaxing experience. One thing to note, parking is super tight because of the nearby businesses so make sure you give yourself a little extra time to park and get upstairs because the parking lot is large but crowded. My 19 year old and I are deva curly girls after fighting it for years. We live in Beverly, and didn't get cuts we were happy about until we began trekking to NYC to Devachon. With no loyalty to a stylist, we knew we would get great cuts, and great lessons on how to care for our hair. For years we did that. Devachon is an assembly line, packed, and not personal at all. On a whim we booked and went to Fringe. Any hesitation I had was abandoned the moment I began to talk with Maria. She was able to squeeze us in at the same time just a few days before the holiday. Not only that, she completely remembered our convo and each person we dealt with knew details about us before our arrival. Talk about the little touches. My daughter had her hair cut by Desiree, and it was great. She was happy and pampered. She got an extra mask treatment she felt was needed. She isn't easily satisfied with her cuts, I chose to have my hair cut by John. You can tell he not only knows how to cut perfectly, but he is aware of every minute happening in the room. His mood, his touch, his words are all there to make me feel special. At the same time, he doesn't do the thing some stylists do where they compliment you constantly and tell you how young you look and gush which is fake. Rather, he shares of himself, asks questions and follows your lead. He could have done anything and been successful at it. Fringe cares about every little thing and it shows. How are they different than other salons? - While your hair is being washed or dried, different people will introduce themselves and offer you a complimentary hand treatment (just a nice moisturizer put onto your hands) or lipstick application. I passed on the lips and the hands were lovely. - The room is one of a kind. Each piece is curated from antiques shops and circulated so things change visit to visit (or so I was told). When I asked about the designer, I was told John did it himself. It is a gothic, witchy, black and red, antique, vital, environment that has an energy all its own. The chi in the space moves and feels great. - The people who work in the room obviously want to be there, and like each other. People are relaxed and happy and that is probably the biggest difference between Fringe and the big city salons. Bottom line: Ok, so it's pricey. it's pricey like Boston. Basically, this is a high end Boston salon in the burbs. Because of this, there is parking, room to walk around, and a view. Of water. If you understand that you are worth the investment, try out Fringe and don't go anywhere else. We are converts now, and very happy about it. After my next visit, I will post an update, to let you know how our hair grows out - the true test! Every indication is that these are great cuts. Fringe is the best! Kathleen has been cutting and coloring my hair for years now, and she does a fantastic job getting the color to pop. She takes her time cutting and styling my hair, while chatting about interesting stuff. The location is on the water, and you can look out at Salem harbor while getting your hair done. Very relaxing! Just moved to town and glad i found this place. Great prices for the quality of service! Place was clean and decorated in a really cool and unique style. Had a cut with Scott today who was friendly, attentive to detail, and made the whole experience very relaxing. They are very good with covid safety measures. Take your temperature when you walk in, provide hand sanitizer, everyone is wearing a mask, plenty/more than 6 feet between stations, and they even had these really cool plexiglass shields that the stylists are able to work around as an extra later of protection. 5-stars, would definitely recommend! read more

I arrived on time for my appointment and was told I got the time wrong. After referring to the text confirmation the receptionist apologized for the mix up. I was there for a simple blow dry. The stylist that I had chosen was overbooked and without notification they stick we with someone else. It was sadly the worst blow dry I've ever gotten. No product used and in addition not a single question asked about how I'd like my hair to look. The humidity the day before was a better stylist. Do not recommend. read more

I still love John and his staff. Usually, John cuts my hair, and Kathleen washes, glosses, washes again, and styles my hair, plus she does my brows. I believe lash extensions are available, and so is lipgloss (I forget the brand but I like it), plus bumble and bumble and Deva products. John's salon is much bigger now, as he has expanded, but he still has that upbeat, modern feel that I love. Everyone is so friendly and I feel completely at home (plus, I love the great magazine selection). Even though I live in VA, I still have my hair cut here. I always get compliments on my hair. I had my first visit to fringe for a dry cut with John and curl coaching. Someone recommended John to me as someone skilled with curly hair. My hair is very long and has a mind of its own. I neglect it on most days and just rock a messy bun. First off, the staff is super nice and I love the decor of the salon. John did a great job cutting my hair and Scott showed me how to use the Deva products. I was provided with lots of tips and patience. I have wavy hair and I was looking for someone who uses the Deva Curl Method. Their website clearly states they use the dry cut method. I know that method works on my hair. But, the stylist I was given did not use the dry cut method. The photos on the website look great. My hair didn't look great after the stylist was done with it. I told her about certain areas of my hair that should not be cut too short - due to cowlicks and extra curly areas. But she cut them too short. She commented a few times that she was trying to get rid of the frizz. But, she got rid of my curls and left me with hair that is far too short. If you have curly hair, you know that it gets shorter when it is dried. I will never go back to Fringe or recommend them to anyone. read more

Where do I even begin raving about Fringe! I've been seeing Kathleen for a few years there and she's truly a master at what she does. I have naturally curly hair and her haircuts make my hair look amazing both curly and when I straighten it. She's also wonderful with color too; whether it's a "simple" single process color, or balayage. She truly listens to what I want and then helps guide me through decisions. I always leave an appointment with Kathleen feeling super excited about my hair and also that I just spent time with a food friend. Kathleen has also been amazing with my toddler daughter over the last couple of years. She gets so excited to have her haircut! Fringe also recently added a new esthetician to their team, Jazmine. I was pretty excited about that since I felt that I haven't found the right match for me ever since my previous esthetician moved more than a year ago. So, I figured I'd give it a shot through the promotions they've been running. And let me tell you... I've just had a microdermabrasion appointment and my skin is absolutely glowing! Jazmine took the time to really see what she was working with, understand my current skin routine and then work her magic. During the process she also gave me some good tips about how to care for my ever changing skin now (yay two pregnancies and mid thirties!). She's an absolute sweetheart with mad skills! The first time I went, I had to sit around for 40 minutes because they were backed up from a morning wedding (it was 3pm). John sat me in a chair and gave me a pamphlet about curly hair, which I dont have, and asked me to read it and pick out what kind of "curly girl" I was. This made no sense to me. Then he finally got to me and I told him what I was looking for. I said I was looking for something funky and rock and roll and all I got was told that I needed to grow it out before we could really 'fix' it. It was as though he didnt hear a word I said, which I suspect he didnt. Either way, he cut it, it looked ok. It wasnt rock and roll or funky, but fine. I was charged $75 and was told that after the first time, the price goes down by $10. Ok so I grow out my hair and go back. Maybe he was just having a bad day when I was there the first time. Nope, more of the same. I grew out all my layers and told him I really wanted him to cut bangs because I look better with them (having determined this by actually spending the time to grow them out). He did not cut bangs. When I mentioned this to him when he was finishing, he proceeeded to cut the layer I had just finished growing out, shorter again because thats what he said he had to do (not true) and my hair still didnt have the bangs that I asked for. It felt like a punishment for daring to express my dis-satisfaction. Of course then everyone dutifully tells you how gorgeous you look. I felt like I was stuck in some bad stage act. I'm very clear about what I need, and I was not listened to AT ALL when I went to this salon. He was more concerned about the music and the protocol of his staff than he was about listening to his client. The first time I was there he sent a staff member to check on someones work on cleaning the bathroom correctly. They also give you a punch card and offer to punch it toward a free cut if you leave a review on Yelp. I will say that Liz on his staff is very nice and gave me a good eyebrow wax. I'll go elsewhere from now on, where I am actually listened to. read more

I have had every bad haircut since I can remember and actually people would tell my brother " Oh, I didnt know you had a little brother." I am a wash and go kind of gal. No hairdryers or styling products for me! And I generally get a haircut 2-3 times per year. Hence, I had never bothered to go to a real salon and get a proper haircut. Supercuts suited me okay and then I graduated to low-end $25 haircut places. But it was time for a change. I searched Yelp and found reviews for Fringe. At the time there were only three reviews, but it sounded great, despite my not having curly hair. I was intrigued by the dry haircut process. I made an appointment with John. What a great experience. I went in not knowing what I wanted but also not being that picky with what I ended up with. John took the time to find out a little about me and my lifestyle first and then made some suggestions of what he thought would look good and I told him to go for it. I was there for over an hour but the time flew by. John is so nice and easy to talk to. My social skills are sub-par and I generally dread the small talk that comes along with getting a haircut. But chatting with John was a breeze and a lot of fun. The haircut itself is lovely. It is pretty easy for a no nonsense girl like me to get it to look decent with little effort (though I have yet to get my bangs to look quite as fab as John got them to look, but I am still practicing). I am very happy I found Fringe and I definitely plan on returning and getting a haircut more frequently than I am used to. I suggested to my boyfriend that he give Fringe a try as well, so perhaps I will have a future update from the male perspective. read more

I love this salon :) I had my first cut with John the other day and I was so happy with the experience that I promptly booked him to do my hair on my wedding day. This might be the first time I have ever truly *loved* a haircut. I was a little uncertain about getting my hair done at a "pricey" place (my last couple of cuts were at Supercuts - blah), but then it occurred to me that my haircut at Fringe was still less than what my fiance and I might spend on a night of dinner and drinks - and the happiness of a great haircut lasts a lot longer than that. My only tip: get someone else to drive you home after your haircut. I went here March 2008, my review is a bit belated. This would have been great if I'd had curly hair, but I don't, not that the owner would believe me. They're also big on the hard sell, with products and hair systems. I went in for a hair cut and left with a book, leave in conditioner, hair clips, a $108 dollar bill and sold that after 2-3 weeks I'd have a whole new head of hair. I tried the system for 2.5 weeks and my hair texture didn't change at all. The cut was great for what he was trying to do, but my hair was limp and wavy, and determined to stay limp and wavy with just enough curl to look bedraggled. He has, single-handedly (well, with the fabulous Adriana at his side), and before my very eyes, changed women's perceptions of themselves - all ages, all styles, all personalities. Each has left with more confidence, walking out of his salon not just feeling great until the next shower but for good. It's his philosophy - every person who comes in leaves feeling not just stylish but educated about how to care for their seemingly frizzy, flattened, dry curls with a mind of their own. It sounds dramatic to say but it's true, he helps his customers feel empowered to take better care of their hair and look better overall. One doesn't go into Fringe for a hair cut, one goes into Fringe for a style change and a whole new personal glow. I've never been one to spend hours on my hair - I'm pretty much a wash-'n-go lady but I've been so happy with the line of product he uses, the easy and relatively quick process he explained, his edgy yet classic cuts, and personal attention he provides that I don't think I'll ever go to another salon or use any other product again. This review is coming from a non- curly hair person. I typically went to Andrew Michaels and was pretty happy- but then my stylist left and they didn't tell me where she went. So i called last minute to book an appointment for saturday for a cut and a foil and they were able to take me. Yeah! I had Adrianna who was awesome. awesome. I LOVE my cut, and the foil i got is really natural looking. i was there for about 2 hours total. Pros- Right around the corner. I walked there. Dry cut was awesome. I was able to style myself the next day! color is fabulous Cons- Only one, and it's cost. I paid $170 (without tip) for a cut and a foil, and I have pretty short hair so the foil didn't take that long. It's the most i've ever paid including newbury street. I looked on the website and it said $125 for a full foil (which i assumed included the cut like most places) but it didn't, so i had somewhat of a sticker shock when i got the bill and was charged $125 for the foil and $45 for the cut, plus tip. I'll defintiely go back to Adrianna, she was great, but will probably only do a cut there from now on. Also- one of the reviews mentioned a "hard sell" on products. I didnt' find this at all. Adrianna told me what she was using, but never tried to oversell. I felt completely comfortable there. read more

I've gone to Fringe since Februrary of 07 and I love this place very much. I'm very much a wash and wear kind of person with wavy hair and Adrianna has done a great job with sending me away with hair I can live with. I mean, a haircut is only as good as you can keep up. You only walk out of the salon 5 or 6 times a year, so I'm less impressed with how they make my hair look when I'm in there than how my hair looks when I'm left holding down the fort. Every time I'm pleased with how I look weeks later. She's always listened to me and answered my questions. There's not much I can add to what's already been said about the haircuts. I actually started going here to get my eyebrows done. I have horrific eyebrows that need to get done once a month or it's just bad news. Naturally, I'm a bit picky. Nothing worse than coming out with pencil-thin, unnaturally arched brows or, even worse, abrasions from too hot wax. She did a great job with my eyebrows, so I decided to get my hair cut there too. The vibe there is also worth noting. They're not snotty, or pushy or too chatty. They send you off with hair that works with your lifestyle, not theirs. They don't actively sell hair product to you or try to convince you to color your hair or talk your ear off your head about nothing at all. The music is chill. I've heard Cake, Fugees, the Beatles - I guess it's John's iPod - and that's a refreshing break from the crap they usually play in salons! read more

I've been in search of a new hairdresser for a few months now. My go to moved to a salon in Danvers and now has little availability for me on the weekend so it was time to make a move... who wants to drive to Danvers, anyway!!? Not this girl! Man am I glad I made the switch! Elizabeth at Fringe Salon fit me in on Saturday evening and gave me the first dry cut of my life. It's perfect! Beautifully done. I have short wavy hair with bangs and she told me all about how dry cut is the way to go - she was absolutely right. There were no surprises when it was over - you know when they finish and it's waaaaay shorter then it looked wet? I'll never ask for a wet cut again. Friendly service, continued education is required of all staff (which is one of the major things I look for in a salon) clean, affordable ($45 for a wash/cut/dry/straighten) - she really knew what she was doing. I have found my new local salon! They have very convenient hours (including Sundays!! Open until 10pm on Thursdays! and 7pm Tues, Weds, Fri). I had been trying to give this place a go for a while but I'm a last minute scheduler - I wake up on Friday and say "Eek!!" i need a hair cut, STAT! But I will try to change my ways for Fringe. There were 8 of us total and it only took them from 10-12:30 to do all our hair. I was able to bring in some champange and breakfast pastries to snack on while we were getting ready. Going to this salon is a blissful experience! John is a master stylist! I felt like a goddess the entire time I sat in his chair, and my hair has never looked better! John uses the "dry-cut" method to achieve amazing results. He brought out the best qualities in my hair and shaped the cut in a way that is easily manageable and versatile. A week later, and my hair still looks fantastic with minimal effort. John took the time to not only figure out the most flattering style for me, but showed me how to create the same results at home. I am super picky about my bangs, and I've never ever left a salon without going straight home to fix whatever damage the stylists have done to me. But not after going to Fringe! John spent 20 minutes on my bangs alone and they are PERFECT. I haven't been able to say that in years. Not only is John a genius, but he's super nice, funny, and very detail-oriented. He's more than patient and will spend as much time as it takes to give his clients the best haircut of their lives. He's a great conversationalist too. And don't be fooled by thinking John only works his magic with curly hair. I have stick-straight, baby-fine hair and it has so much body and shape to it now. I still catch myself in the mirror and think "is that really MY hair?!". Boys, you should check this place out too!
