I made an appointment and went in first thing in the morning to have RideWrap (purchased for $180 elsewhere) installed on my bike. I was told I would be charged the hourly labor rate of $95/hour to install, but I would be called if it would take longer than two hours. The employee appeared to think it would take between one and two hours to complete. The next morning, I got a call saying the bike was ready for pickup and that it took them 5.5 hours to do the installation. I was never contacted to be told that the job would be taking longer than two hours. They charge me $250 for the job and act like they're doing me a favor. If I had been contacted - as I was told I would be - or if this price was presented when I dropped off the bike, I might have been fine with it. But charging more than $190 in this situation is unethical at best. After doing a bit more research, every shop I found that offers installation of RideWrap specifically (instead of just charging an hourly rate) charges $150. I need other parts and more work to get done on the bike, but now that will have to be taken care of elsewhere. Unrelated note: the parking situation at/around the shop isn't great. read more

My daughter who is 8 years old, spent the entire day visiting and calling bike shops to find a new bike. She had outgrown her old one and rides everyday. Mark at West end bikes was finally able to help. He had a few bikes ready for her to try when she walked in the door. They tuned up the bike and in her words, "made it safe". She tested the bike and it road very smooth. She has never tried gears before so he gave her lots of tips and was very kind and generous with his time. Best bike shop service I've ever had. Today I bought a used Van Moof eBike, and had it checked at West End, the only authorized service for the entire region. The front brakes were not working, so Mark adjusted them and trued the rotor for a very reasonable cost. Mark was kind enough to tighten the seat and kickstand during the service. Repair was complete in a couple hours, and they put it on the charger for me when they were done. Mary was very kind as well. Highly recommended not just for high quality repairs, but for new bikes & accessories. read more

Unkind owner. While this shop is situated in a nice part of the city, and the selection is quite good, I cannot overlook a very serious attitude problem the female partner seems to be afflicted with. She was very aggressive and territorial when I asked if I could come in..... "Did you see the sign?" she shot back with sarcasm, "no" I replied, after all that's why I was asking. She sighed, and said "Why don't we go check it together? .... See? What does it say?" "I laughed assuming this was just her sense of humor, or perhaps she had some social anxiety, then as I was walking towards the door to enter the shop, she called after me again, "it says open." I ignored her because her condescending tone was starting to test my tolerance. As I browsed around the shop, she seemed to follow me, which I thought was odd considering there were other customers whom she could've assisted at that time. I felt like she just lacked awareness so I tried to point out to her that I was just browsing, and she said "you could have browsed from the window right?." And then laughed and said "right?" She just waited there for me to acknowledge her joke, but I was growing tired of her so I left. As I was walking out, I heard her telling one of the other employees about the open sign thing, and some comments about me. I stopped in another time when the older gentleman was working, and he was excellent. Very knowledgeable and straight to the point. I think she should learn from his example. read more

I walked in to see if I can get an estimate for my older Bianchi. As soon as the repair tech saw it from a few feet away, he cringed and immediately referred me to a different bike shop for "used parts" because it's "so vintage". I rode the bike there, and it's not in terrible condition. I don't know what the issue was. I just wanted someone to take a look and let me know what can be improved or replaced (chain, brakes, cable housing etc). I took it to REI and they took my bike in and helped me out without any issues. The guy treated me like I was riding one of those 1800s bikes with the big front wheel lol. I was willing to pay whatever for services. Not really sure what his issue was. read more

I know nothing about bikes, and I felt welcome here. Walked in at 1015am on a Monday looking for a helmet. I am not an intense biker -- I just putter around on BIKETOWN, but there aren't enough bike lanes to make me feel completely comfortable forgoing a helmet for my longer rides into downtown. As soon as I got in, I got directed to someone that helped me choose a helmet in less than 10 minutes. I told him I cared most about safety. He gave me a price range, gave me one to try on, helped me adjust the buckles, told me to wear it an inch over my eyes, and showed me the features of the helmet. I was in and out in 5 minutes and thoroughly felt as if I was helped the right way. I'll come back to them with whatever bike related needs I have in the future. read more

Really great service. I brought my bike in for an annual tune-up and to replace a rear derailleur. Some of the costs overlapped which was taken into consideration when I received my final price. Everything was explained very well, and the work is as good as I could have hoped. They even put little bumpers on my frame to protect against cable rubbing and used orange cable caps to match the bike. They're just small details, but those show that they pay attention to what they're doing and care about the details. It was a pleasure being their customer, and I'll for sure be back for any repairs in the future. read more

Their new store is a little hard to spot from outside. My son cased a jump on his mountain bike which lead to his back brake feeling mushy, thought I might need to have it bled. Hans quickly diagnosed the problem and found that the brake lever reach had been affected by the impact and quickly adjusted them, he also gave me great advice that I didn't need to worry about the slight play in the front wheel that it was safe to ride because the hubs used cartridge bearings. I appreciated the level of service and the professional advice, something a couple of bigger shops sometimes don't have the time to give or for reasons unknown choose not to. Purchased a 100.00 gift card for my wife for my Mother's Day for a simple cleaning and lubing for a bike that cost 600.00 4 years ago (which was the stated cost for their base cleaning and lubing package). My wife called to see if her bike was ready and they charged her 357.00 for things she never approved. Never got a call that they were gonna perform anything more than the most basic package. Called them to figure out how this could have happened. Got put on hold for 15 minutes and got hung up on. Called back and informed the owner of the situation. It ended in him telling me to shut the fu#* up and hung up on me. These people are snakes. read more

My old bike was revitalized at West End Bikes. I have not had any problems with the repairs made. I did have a couple issues with some light products. My problems were corrected without a hitch. I won't take my bike any other place. I was offered plenty of advice and had a pleasant experience. After a long tour from NYC to PDX, I decided to let West End Bikes pack and ship my ride back home. The demeanor of the place is pro, and the staff seem to be a little too proud of that fact. I tried to ignore the attitude of the shop and just trust that these guys -- given all their confidence -- would do a stand up job. Two weeks later when my bike arrived, the dynamo wiring connecting the front light to the rear light had been cut. Someone had literally snipped the wire. What were they thinking? I called the shop and the mechanic who packed it - his name is GEOFF - denied the allegations. I sent an email to the shop to try to get someone to acknowledge the damage. Maybe BRE? But it's been over a week with no response. Moral of the story - do not come here. This is a snobby place that doesn't stand by their poor work. After biking across the US and hitting up every LBS I would pass, West End will be remembered as the worst bike shop in the country. Damn. read more

I was really impressed by the service I got at West End Bikes this weekend. I took my bike downtown and got caught with a flat tire. Fortunately, West End was close by. Even though it was only 30-45 min to the store closing, Matt was quick to help me. He went above and beyond in not only quickly fixing the flat, but when I expressed interest in learning how to do this simple repair myself, he walked me through every single step he took to fix the flat and thoroughly explained it all. He also helped me put together the first few items needed to make my own spare tire repair kit so that next time I'm caught with a flat, I can do it myself. He even suggested some local spots that hold classes for learning skills like this, from simple skills like repairing a flat to more advanced like building your own bike. I recently needed a bearing replaced on my bike. I work downtown, so it ended up being easiest for me to drop it by West End Bikes. Didn't know what to expect from a downtown bike shop, but I was more than impressed. Both times I dropped in to have the bike looked at, the mechanic stopped what he was doing to diagnose my issues. He did a great job of showing me what needed to be fixed, and why. I also received a phone call during the repair to ask me about additional things I could have done while they had the bike. I didn't end up doing it, but it was nice to be informed. Choosing a downtown location, I was already prepared to pay a bit extra. I did end up dropping a good amount of money, but I was comfortable that all repairs were made, and the parts used were high quality. Beyond cost, they were also pretty backed up. Luckily, I was leaving town, as my repairs & tune up ended up taking almost a week to complete. My bike is my primary means of transportation, so it means a lot to me to keep it running smoothly. Convenience might cost a little extra, but the customer service and thorough repairs are worth it. read more

Took the coastal starlight Amtrak train from the San Francisco Bay Area to Portland. The plan was to ride my bicycle back home.700 miles. Just one problem: I boxed my bike for the train and didn't trust myself to put it back together again. Called Matt in the bike service department at 3:00pm on a Saturday and pled my case. Said I would arrive before closing and needed someone to check everything. When I got there, Matt made me feel right at home. Said he would be happy to get my journey started on the food foot. He showed me that a bubble was forming on my back tire and I agreed to replace it. Matt is RiIPPED! He removed my schwalbe marathons WITHOUT A TOOL. And yes, his girlfriend is very satisfied with his back rubs. Matt checked EVERYTHING with patience and humility. He explained why he made each adjustment. By the time Matt was done with my bike I felt enormous confidence that my ride would not be spoiled by equipment failure. 738 miles and 14 days later I arrived home safely without ever having to fix a flat or make adjustments. read more

The customer service I received was courteous but didn't suffice, I dropped my bike off to be assembled (the bike was 90% built) on Saturday as soon as the store opened and I was told that that it would be ready for pick up on Tuesday. Tuesday comes and around and the bike was still sitting in the box and had not been touched. Im not a person that gets bothered easily and leaves bad reviews but that was frustrating because I could have taken it to a shop that would have gotten it done by the day they told be to pick it up. read more

This shop has the BEST collection of biking apparel in the city. Mark Ontiveros, one of the owners, has an eye for well designed gear and knows his products upside-down. Need more warmth for the mid-30s weather, he goes to Assos Skinfoil. Feet to cold, he's got winter cycling boots, etc. And he even has casual pants and shirts that appeal to the athletic type person. Really classy stuff. But the important thing to me is that he doesn't try to up-sell. He gets you what you need, period. It's a fun place to just browse. read more

These guys are terrific! I bought my bike here over 2 1/2 years ago and have taken it for service here ever since. They have always been very up-front with me on what my bike needed. They have given me terrific advice on things I could do myself to extend the life of my bike and it's components. Just had my bike serviced here a month ago and I am definitely at least 1mph faster! So, needed just a new tube for my road bike, These guys were fairly close to me, so, I called. They had me make an appointment, due to all the COVID madness. Makes sense. Walked over there and got a Specialized 700 x 25 tube. Never had one before, but these guys are big Spesh people, evidently, so, no problem. Fine. The guy who checked me out was new and quite flippant and pretty rude, honestly. Not a good customer service image, I guess, for any company, really. But, no biggie. He was new. Got home. Tube had a small hole in it. 8 bucks. Not a huge deal, it happens with Conti tubes, too. Anyway, I called and reported it and asked for a call back to sort out what we should do. Not a ton of money. But could not get a reponse from them. Nothing. You don't find out about a business when everything goes well. Anyone can look good when that happens. You learn what people are made of when there is a problem. These guys could not be bothered. I get it. 8 bucks. But, you know what, I am in the market for a new bike, too. Not a confidence-inspiring experience. I couldn't help noticing a number of road bikes well over $10K in the shop. Beautiful. Putting the entire thing together, to me, what this all says is, they seem really focused on selling 12 thousand dollar road bikes. That seems to be their deal. Which is great. But I will not be buying one there. If they can't even take care of a hole in a new tube. what will happen when a fork cracks on that uber-expensive S-Works? I shudder to imagine... read more

-This review is for an incident that happened about 4 months ago- Customer service is weird here. I came in asking if they sold frame saver and the bike mechanic said "bring your bike in and I'll do it for $5. Why buy a bottle of frame saver for $20 that you'll use once?" Wow! Seems like it makes sense. He went on to explain that I'd have to disassemble the bike completely or else the price will go up dramatically. A few months later, I finally found the time to disassemble the bike and bring it in. I explained to the mechanic working that day about the deal the guy quoted me and asked her what price she'd charge me since 1) he wasn't there and 2) I couldn't remove the bottom bracket because I didn't have the right tool. She said, "if you were quoted $5 that's what I'll charge no problem". Nice, right? She didn't hesitate, she didn't ask the manager first, she gave me the second quote of $5. I left the shop and got a call about an hour later from another guy (the manager or owner?) explaining he would not let her do it for $5, that he fired the guy who quoted me that price and that it would cost me about $37 for labor and the price of the can of frame saver they're going to open because supposedly "once you open it it isn't going to be good forever". Seemed odd so I asked him if I'd be able to keep the leftover frame saver since I'm paying for it and he said yes. I was a bit annoyed but I agreed because, hey, I'm happy to support a local business and this is a sentimental project for me. Once I got back to the shop and got my frame back, I told the mechanic that I am taking the left over frame saver since I paid for the whole bottle (as previously agreed). She stated there "was barely any left" but I insisted on it. She handed me the bottle which was 3/4 full! I was shocked. Shocked that they charged me for the whole bottle, shocked that she lied about how much was left in that bottle, reeling from the whole ordeal and just wanting to leave without shedding a tear after the way I'd been treated. Moral of the story is that apparently these folks do not take you seriously unless you're getting some pro tune ups done here. $5 was seemingly the honest price that two of their own mechanics quoted to me before the boss up'd it 7x that and then asked me to pay for an entire can of frame saver that they weren't even intending to give to me after the fact. Yikes, guys. I know I'm small time business for them, but I built this bike and it means a lot to me. Enough to have it frame saved before I take it home to de-rust and lacquer it / build it back up. Sorry to waste your time, but at least I paid way more than I was quoted right? Man, nothing like getting extremely let down by what seemed like a small neighborhood business that you want to support. Heartbreaking. I don't pretend to know how much the price should have been and that's why I asked them TWICE and it's my opinion that they should have honored those quotes. The worst part is, I was planning to buy the frame saver and do it myself originally and was reeled in by what ended up being either shady business tactics or just plain bad training. read more

I stopped in just after work today because I got a flat after a little piece of my tire filling thingy (can you tell I don't know much about bikes?) snapped off when I was filling it up before commuting home. I was expecting to drop my bike off, take the MAX home, and pick the bike up the next day, but they fixed it right there while I waited! The woman who fixed it also showed me how I can check my tire pressure and told me about what it should normally be (I had no idea about either of these things and had just been feeling it out). She also greased up my chain and filled up my other tire as well! And she was super kind and helpful! I'm always scared to go into bike shops because I realize how little I know about my bike and I'm scared of being judged, but I never felt judged at all here. I know I should take the time to learn (and I do learn about it in bits and pieces as I go) but it's always nice to feel welcome in a bike shop even though I don't know anything. This is a Specialized concept store? Do not try to get assistance with a Specialized mountain bike, b/c according to service "we are not a mtn shop".. why do you have mountain bikes on display? God for bid I bring in my brand new 2010 SPECIALIZED Enduro expert, and ask for a replacement part. This is the perfect fit for PDX, another pretentious shop where service gives an attitude! I'm sorry I do not have a fixed gear and race cross on the weekend!! I tried to reach the owners, Mark and Mike, but never could get ahold of them.. So now I have to write this stupid review to feel better. If you are affiliated with Specialized? why do would you refuse to contact Specialized or the local rep??? I've never wrote a Yelp review in my life! personally, I think people put to much emphasis on these reviews, but I care about cycling(no matter what kind!) and I think Specialized is a great company(who is putting emphasis/R&D in all mountain and DH!).. It pains me to ask for help, and have the 'too cool for school' mechanic not care. When I read travel blogs about Portland I read 3 consistent things. 1. Voodoo donuts 2. Powell's bookstore 3. The bike scene is huge here. Since the GF wanted to spend a lot more time at powells I decided to walk around. I came to his bike shop. I walked around for 20-25 minutes and circled around 2-3 times. No "hello" or "how can I help you?"... Nothing. Am I trained to expect more coming from so cal? There are so many bike shops in PDX that I would think they all would want my business. Since amazon taxes in Cali now I thought Oregon would be part of my solution! This store didn't help. read more

If you're an avid commuter their hardgoods alone will leave you smiling but what really attracted me was their variety of functional and attractive commuter clothing. We're talking button up shirts and slacks that have so many hidden cycle-friendly features that you'll feel like you're Bruce Wayne. Awesome selection of road, mountain and urban bikes with a strong emphasis on Specialized and Cinelli. Every time I come in, it's a wonderful experience. A friend (serious cyclist) recommended this place. He'd said "yeah, you might pay $50 more on a $2k bike, but if you want a place where all the employees are experienced riders/racers/technicians and wonderful people to boot, this is the place to go." He couldn't have been more right. The first couple times, I was met with incredibly friendly and knowledgeable cyclists: had a chance to chat with the owner too (local comapny). Last time, the service manager Bre was utterly helpful in fixing an issue with a high-end seatpost that had baffled two other bike mechanics in town (thanks Bre; just rode Council Crest to Skyline Tavern and the saddle didn't move an inch). There's just no way I'd buy a bike somewhere like REI when a place like this exists. These are the folks that do more than sell you a bike (anyone can do that). This is the kind of shop with a staff that'll find you the *right* bike and service it expertly: because they're very serious about what they do. I have been working with Andrew on buying a new Tarmac while waiting for insurance to pay for a bike that was totaled (another story). He kept me informed and provided me updates on how many of my size were left worldwide. I came in Sunday to order the bike but low and behold, the owner was there and told me that this model of bike runs smaller than my previous bike (Roubaix) and they had a 56 in store which fits me perfectly. Needless to say I walked out with a smile on my face. Great people here and amazing customer service. Couldn't be more pleased. read more

I spent 10 minutes with a friend looking at bikes and wondering aloud about the differences between some models and their price (since nothing is marked), but personnel were much more interested in talking to each other.
