Needed brake maintenance on my e-bike that had shit stock brakes. Tomcat replaced with quality Shimano brakes, and also tightened up a bunch of stuff that was loose and oiled what needed oiling. Then gave me a lot of advice on bike maintenance so I wouldn't have so many issues in the future. He also did it super fast despite being very understaffed. There is a pattern to the negative reviews with the owner Tom of this shop that was replicated with my experience with him. He was friendly when I brought my bike in. Then sent me a bloated invoice stating the parts that needed to be replaced and work to be done. Mind you some of the parts were replaced the season before. When I brought up the possibility of repairing instead of replacing some of them, and bringing in new, full price parts I found online from reputable retailors at significantly cheaper prices, that's when the communication broke down. I am more than happy to pay for expertise, labor and repairs but I also want to engage in deciding what my options are. The conversation at this point turned demeaning. I ultimately did not feel listened to since I'm still having the same problem I went to him for. It seemed like too much of a struggle to conversate about options as a customer. Upon completion of the job there were added costs to the invoice that were not quoted on the initial invoice. Some of his labor pricing is reasonable and other labor costs are exorbitant. Like the other negative reviews, I'm sure he will have a friendly response to this review. I wish him well but recommend a more open ended approach to communicating and not getting so defensive so quickly. Do yourself a favor and price check the parts and labor he is quoting and you will see what I'm talking. read more

Tom performed a miracle on my old, rusty, crumbling hand-me-down bike. Not only did Tom make my bike function (which is a miracle in and of itself), he made it look amazing and ride smoothly--all while sticking within a $400 budget. He replaced nearly everything but the frame (which, by the way, gave him a lot of problems since everything was rusted together). I also want to point out that I know very little about bikes and I -announced that to Tom right when I walked though the door. Not only did he take the time to explain what he was doing and why to me in a way I would understand, he also didn't upsell me at all--oftentimes telling me things that I didn't need or ways to make my end bill cheaper without sacrificing quality. My husband bought me a Priority e-coast bike and he assembled it. The bike is cool, but it is kinda a beast compared to my old Specialized Bike. It was a bit scary and the brakes rubbed. I wanted a professional to give it the once over and fix the brakes. I found Tom, and his bike repair shop Tomcats, via Priority's help finder on their websites. I really like Tom. He has a small shop filled to the ceiling with bikes, bike parts, kinda grungy, but has such a cool vibe, and you know Tom knows! Like Everyone else, I am pulling my bike out of the garage and dusting it off to exercise outside being a T1D during the pandemic summer. I have purchased three used bikes from Tomcat on three separate occasions and every single one has come with some sort of issue. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson after the first incident, but I really wanted to try and support this local business. I will never return to Tomcat Bikes. Continue reading to find out why. 2014, I bought a "playa bike" to take to Burning Man. It was a simple bike with a single gear and coaster break. Nothing fancy, but it was supposed to be in working order. Unfortunately, I was pressed for time and didn't find out until I was nearly 500 miles from home and already on playa to discover that the tires did not hold air. Seriously?! You had one job, and failed miserably. Fortunately, Tomcat also goes to Burning Man, and I was able to track him down and get it fixed on my second day there, but would have otherwise been SOL. 2019, my wife purchased another used bike from Tomcat. I forget the exact details, but I recall there were some fitment issues with a rim/tire that resulted in pinching tubes and causing recurring flats. A friend and avid cyclist pointed out the cause. We took it into the shop and Tomcat fitted a new rim/tire for free, but it should have been right the first time. 2020, I purchased a used bike for myself. Got it home and next time I went to ride it, flat tires. Both front and back have slow leaks. The front is probably within the spectrum what is acceptable since it can hold pressure for at least a week; the rear not so much. Tomcat offered to replace the tubes, again, but at this point I am over it. I am never stepping foot in there again. 2021, fast-forward a year or so and I am complaining to my avid cyclist friend about the fit of my bike purchased in 2020. My friend tells me the bike is way too small for me. I am 6'1", and Tomcat sold me a smaller frame and wheels than what he sold to my wife. WTF? I was upfront with Tomcat about not knowing bikes, and asking for help with fit. I was patient and willing to wait for the right bike to come in on consignment. I trusted him, and I feel like I was taken advantage of to make an easy sale. Bottom line, if you want it done right the first time, stay away! read more

He then fixed the bikes replacing parts with used parts where it made sense. The repairs addressed the issues we had, were done promptly and at a price that was very reasonable. We came here on a budget the day of our friends 19th birthday. He'd been wanting a bike for years, and we pooled our money to finally get him this bike. Tom was so helpful, he guided us to a bike in our range that was perfect for what we needed and even threw in a kickstand on the house. The bike and all the bits we got (fenders, lights, lock) ended up being just a little more expensive than the crappy bike we were looking at on Craigslist. Love to support a local small business!! I cannot recommend Tomcat Bikes enough! My Scott roadie was in rough shape when I brought it into the shop. Tom tossed the bike on the stand, diagnosed the repairs it would need, answered my questions, gave me a price estimate, and sent me on my merry way with no judgement or fuss. When it was my bike's turn for repair, Tom noticed a few more issues with the bike than what we originally discussed. He sent me updates via text with what he found and what it would cost to fix. I gave him the thumb's up for the suggested changes, and Tom did not do any costly repairs without running it by me. I did not at any point feel upcharged, or like I was trying to be sold anything. Upon pickup, Tom took the time to review the repairs with me, and I was delighted with the work done! He has a great eye for both bike function AND design. My bike rides and looks better than the day I bought it. The only minor inconvenience throughout this whole process was that it took an extra day to repair; however, the quality of the work done and transparent communication rendered this a non-issue. Never have I felt so comfortable in a bike shop! So...I am not an avid rider... but I do own a bike and it is a nice bike. I like it... but it has been sitting in the garage for a long time and needed to be checked out. Went all the way to WTF Bikes from my home in Happy Valley because of what people have said about them....and I can say that everyone has been right. They made me feel comfortable ....answered all my questions, gave my bike a safety checkup and all for a very reasonable price. I just bought a bike for my soon to be 5 year old from the big giraffe store (you know the one...the one that you almost can never avoid forever if you have a kiddo) ... but bought it in the box in hopes to take it to WTF Bikes to have it properly assembled and have a safety checkup even though it is brand new. I would have called and asked to drop it off today if they were open but hell, I can't blame them for being closed on a holiday. Translated, this means people like me lust after gorgeous bikes all the time, yet must work within our budgets & work with what we already have. Enter Tom Daly at WTF bike repair. BTW, 'WTF' stands for 'Well Tuned Fast', in case you thought otherwise. The shop is small & is located in a parking lot/food cart spot on the corner of 11th & SE Clay. The prices are fair & Tom is friendly. He strikes me as someone who will not steer you in the wrong direction. He seems like a straight shooter as far as what your bike actually needs. My bike was in desperate need of some TLC. It had been sitting in my hall closet for year and a half when I finally decided it was time to make biking part of my commute. There are about 1,000 bike shops in Portland and since I know next to nothing about what I need I wanted to make sure I found a shop that wouldn't take advantage of my naive self. WTF was one of the only shops on yelp that had more 5 star reviews than anything else. And several people had talked about how great they were treated, how quickly the work was done, and that the price was less than expected. I was sold. I swung by the shop about an hour before they closed on Tuesday and explained my situation (needed a tune-up, probably new break pads, but besides that I had no idea) and Tom gave me an estimate on costs and told me it would be done in about 2 days. Less than 24 hours later I get a call telling me it was all ready. I picked up my bike and it looked brand new. I couldn't believe it. Tom was also really helpful in explaining how to use the stem shifters (see, clueless) and he told me that my frame had a small crack and gave me advice on what to look out for so I know when to bring it back in. Even though it's a bit of a trek down Powell from where I live, I'll still bring my bike back to WTF. The cost was cheaper than I imagined, the work was speedy, and my bike is riding like it's brand new. read more

1. These guys are awesome. I know nothing about bikes and they weren't a bunch of a-holes about it (which, truth be told, I was kind of expecting). I asked a bunch of questions and they were super friendly and helpful. Now I felt like the a-hole for assuming as such. Womp womp... 2. Found the perfect one. A nice little used bike they fixed up: Fuji frame, new Schwinn seat, and a bunch of other jargon I know nothing about. But regardless, it rides like a beaut. 3. I'm a tiny gal. This is the place you want to go for bikes, Tom is a god for anything to do with bikes. I been going to his shop just bout when he opened the place. So about 6 months. He is really helpful and will do almost anything to get your bike ready to ride. You don't have to do appointment's, you can just roll up and tell him what ya need. A lot of times Tom will do the job right there, like a flat, derailleur issues, brakes. He also is really cheap, compared to bike n hike etc. Support WTF bikes. P.S.
