Tomcat Bikes - New eBike, not cheap nonsense from Amazon! - Bikes Near Me - Portland, Oregon

I LOVE this place!! I'm a regular at this point, and I will recommend them to every cyclist I meet. I came in about 6 months ago with a Ride1Up e-bike that wouldn't turn on, and had been deemed unfixable by a few different repair shops. David immediately accepted the task and the team worked with me over 3 months to troubleshoot every possible underlying issue with my bike. And they fixed it! Since then I've brought the same bike back with a new issue, a different bike for a tune-up, and friends have also brought their bikes in. I will never go anywhere else!! They are always so friendly and accommodating, their labor and parts prices are UNBEATABLE, and their work is thorough and fully explained. THANK YOU TomCat bikes!!! - Miriam read more

An honest, thorough and seasoned owner who has hired some similarly thoughtful staff. Instead of just doing the work, they collaborated as personal consultants/educators without judgement or condescension. They listened carefully and made astute observations and recommendations. In the end, they have helped our family get where we needed to be - both figuratively and literally. read more

Super quick service. Definitely a well established business and knowledgeable staff. Definitely recommend bringing your e-bike here .

My bike was repaired early and Tom came to the shop to help me get my bike in the car. Huge help and much appreciated. So nice to work with this shop. read more

Needed brake maintenance on my e-bike that had shit stock brakes. Tomcat replaced with quality Shimano brakes, and also tightened up a bunch of stuff that was loose and oiled what needed oiling. Then gave me a lot of advice on bike maintenance so I wouldn't have so many issues in the future. He also did it super fast despite being very understaffed. Will definitely be my go-to for future needs. read more

There is a pattern to the negative reviews with the owner Tom of this shop that was replicated with my experience with him. He was friendly when I brought my bike in. Then sent me a bloated invoice stating the parts that needed to be replaced and work to be done. Mind you some of the parts were replaced the season before. When I brought up the possibility of repairing instead of replacing some of them, and bringing in new, full price parts I found online from reputable retailors at significantly cheaper prices, that's when the communication broke down. I am more than happy to pay for expertise, labor and repairs but I also want to engage in deciding what my options are. The conversation at this point turned demeaning. I ultimately did not feel listened to since I'm still having the same problem I went to him for. It seemed like too much of a struggle to conversate about options as a customer. Upon completion of the job there were added costs to the invoice that were not quoted on the initial invoice. Some of his labor pricing is reasonable and other labor costs are exorbitant. Like the other negative reviews, I'm sure he will have a friendly response to this review. I wish him well but recommend a more open ended approach to communicating and not getting so defensive so quickly. Do yourself a favor and price check the parts and labor he is quoting and you will see what I'm talking. read more

I had my new Bluejay electric bicycle sent to Tomcat Bikes for assembly. They did a great job and had great communication. Helpful and friendly. read more

I recently moved to Vancouver after living in the Gorge for 20 years. I was told about TomCat when I was looking for a shop to pack a tandem I was selling to ship to the buyer in Pennsylvania. Tom got back to me quickly, had a very positive "can do" attitude. I just received word from the buyer that the bike arrived in perfect condition and was packed very carefully by Tom. I am very glad to learn about this little shop now that I live in the area. read more

Tom performed a miracle on my old, rusty, crumbling hand-me-down bike. Not only did Tom make my bike function (which is a miracle in and of itself), he made it look amazing and ride smoothly--all while sticking within a $400 budget. He replaced nearly everything but the frame (which, by the way, gave him a lot of problems since everything was rusted together). I also want to point out that I know very little about bikes and I -announced that to Tom right when I walked though the door. Not only did he take the time to explain what he was doing and why to me in a way I would understand, he also didn't upsell me at all--oftentimes telling me things that I didn't need or ways to make my end bill cheaper without sacrificing quality. If you love your bike and you hate getting screwed over, take your bike here! read more

Tomcat is a small one person human-oriented shop beyond the big sales shops. This shop is perfect for fair price maintenance from a fellow long time cyclist. Tomcat has detailed knowledge of bikes and bike culture, old to right now. I've found fair priced parts there, I'm more DIY, but listened in on many honest maintenance quotes while I was waiting for other customers. Tomcat is one of the best creative bike designers in Portland. What is a creative bike designer? You bring your vision and identity, then collaboratively design a bike: structure, function, color, and expression. Adults to kids, that has beauty. Your YOU bike! read more

Great service, fixed my kids bike on the spot and was cheaper than expected. Appreciate it Tomcat Bikes!

Tom does amazing work! 100% recommended! He's located over by Aladdin theatre. They were able to bring back to life a bicycle that hadn't been used in years that can now be enjoyed once again! read more

We had hotel construction for month's around our local Salem bike shop, and so when I checked out some bike shops in Portland and Lake Oswego - I found TomCat bicycle repair. What started as a repair turned into an upgrade where the owner's expertise on fitting your height and custom handlebars, brakes, fender made a better bike than the boxed bikes you buy online. I highly recommend TomCat bike shop. Their shop is extremely busy, so plan your visit there before the last minute...you'll never forget the experience of having a bike personally fit to your body, including aftermarket customizations. read more

My husband bought me a Priority e-coast bike and he assembled it. The bike is cool, but it is kinda a beast compared to my old Specialized Bike. It was a bit scary and the brakes rubbed. I wanted a professional to give it the once over and fix the brakes. I found Tom, and his bike repair shop Tomcats, via Priority's help finder on their websites. I really like Tom. He has a small shop filled to the ceiling with bikes, bike parts, kinda grungy, but has such a cool vibe, and you know Tom knows! He ran over the whole thing double-checking my husbands work, fixed the rubbing brakes. My husband collected the bike, and he came home impressed with Tom as well. We live between Beaverton and Hillsboro. We could go to REI for repairs, but going forward tuneups, repairs, whatever, its worth the drive over to Sellwood for Tom's expertise! Love you Tom, thank you! read more

Just took my Betty Draper to TomCat Bikes for a tune-up, safety check et. al. Like Everyone else, I am pulling my bike out of the garage and dusting it off to exercise outside being a T1D during the pandemic summer. Tom had the bike done in record time given the high demand for bike repair. Tom is one a one-man show, knowledgeable mechanic, and soooooo down to earth. There is no pretension for the below-average rider like me (heh). Betty is pink, and he even put fabulous new pink pedals on her. Tom also helped me pick out a bike rack so I can take my bike to local car trips in Oregon. I also love Tom caters to all types of riders. You should check him out if you need a bike to tool around town in or just a tune-up. There is a bike shop on every corner like Starbuck's in PDX, but he truly is a gem. I am grateful, you will be too. read more

granted a lot of people judge me by my appearance but after it's all said and done I'm very pol and respectful. but these two guys just treated me like I was a nuisances and really didn't want me in their presence. But overall I was raised and taught better to kill with kindness. I still gave the "over burdened" worker a dollar tip and left. Bubba if you don't like your job, change professions. I have purchased three used bikes from Tomcat on three separate occasions and every single one has come with some sort of issue. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson after the first incident, but I really wanted to try and support this local business. I will never return to Tomcat Bikes. Continue reading to find out why. 2014, I bought a "playa bike" to take to Burning Man. It was a simple bike with a single gear and coaster break. Nothing fancy, but it was supposed to be in working order. Unfortunately, I was pressed for time and didn't find out until I was nearly 500 miles from home and already on playa to discover that the tires did not hold air. Seriously?! You had one job, and failed miserably. Fortunately, Tomcat also goes to Burning Man, and I was able to track him down and get it fixed on my second day there, but would have otherwise been SOL. 2019, my wife purchased another used bike from Tomcat. I forget the exact details, but I recall there were some fitment issues with a rim/tire that resulted in pinching tubes and causing recurring flats. A friend and avid cyclist pointed out the cause. We took it into the shop and Tomcat fitted a new rim/tire for free, but it should have been right the first time. 2020, I purchased a used bike for myself. Got it home and next time I went to ride it, flat tires. Both front and back have slow leaks. The front is probably within the spectrum what is acceptable since it can hold pressure for at least a week; the rear not so much. Tomcat offered to replace the tubes, again, but at this point I am over it. I am never stepping foot in there again. 2021, fast-forward a year or so and I am complaining to my avid cyclist friend about the fit of my bike purchased in 2020. My friend tells me the bike is way too small for me. I am 6'1", and Tomcat sold me a smaller frame and wheels than what he sold to my wife. WTF? I was upfront with Tomcat about not knowing bikes, and asking for help with fit. I was patient and willing to wait for the right bike to come in on consignment. I trusted him, and I feel like I was taken advantage of to make an easy sale. Bottom line, if you want it done right the first time, stay away! read more

From the moment I walked in the door and got a friendly hello, to the moment I walked out with my newly repaired bike, the folks at Tomcat treated me with respect, good intent and care. Great communication before, during and after the repair. When I needed parts, they gave me options for new or used. I ended up saving significantly over what another shop asked for. This made the difference between me keeping the bike or giving up on it. And they delivered on the timeline they promised. Thank you to Tomcat, a small, indie shop that makes PDX a great place to bike. read more

I took two older bikes in after reading the reviews here. Tom looked at the bikes. Told me what he thought needed to be done, showed me what he observed. He then fixed the bikes replacing parts with used parts where it made sense. The repairs addressed the issues we had, were done promptly and at a price that was very reasonable. His bill itemized everything he did. Great shop, I rarely give five stars. read more

Came across Tomcat today as it was the closest shop to me when my chain broke. I'm really lucky to have broken down near such a good shop! They handled my problem quickly and provided great service despite being overbooked. Highly recommended. Thanks again for your help. read more

We came here on a budget the day of our friends 19th birthday. He'd been wanting a bike for years, and we pooled our money to finally get him this bike. Tom was so helpful, he guided us to a bike in our range that was perfect for what we needed and even threw in a kickstand on the house. The bike and all the bits we got (fenders, lights, lock) ended up being just a little more expensive than the crappy bike we were looking at on Craigslist. Love to support a local small business!! Definitely will be going back. read more

Well.Tuned.Fast - could not be more true! Tom tuned my bike and swapped out several parts in less than 1 day! He also gave my neighbors bike a full service upgrade (grips, brake pads, wheels, axel, and tune-up) in less than a week! Tom is also very helpful with riding tips, fitting advice, and general help warding off bike thieves too! read more

I cannot recommend Tomcat Bikes enough! My Scott roadie was in rough shape when I brought it into the shop. Tom tossed the bike on the stand, diagnosed the repairs it would need, answered my questions, gave me a price estimate, and sent me on my merry way with no judgement or fuss. When it was my bike's turn for repair, Tom noticed a few more issues with the bike than what we originally discussed. He sent me updates via text with what he found and what it would cost to fix. I gave him the thumb's up for the suggested changes, and Tom did not do any costly repairs without running it by me. I did not at any point feel upcharged, or like I was trying to be sold anything. Upon pickup, Tom took the time to review the repairs with me, and I was delighted with the work done! He has a great eye for both bike function AND design. My bike rides and looks better than the day I bought it. The only minor inconvenience throughout this whole process was that it took an extra day to repair; however, the quality of the work done and transparent communication rendered this a non-issue. Plus, considering this shop is a solo operation open during a global pandemic warrants a little patience and gratitude from everybody! Bring your bikes here! read more

Super-fast, friendly response! I ended up figuring out the fix as it was a pretty minor problem, but I was really impressed with the interaction that we had. We have two bikes and I'm planning to get an e-bike eventually. This is my new go to bike repair and maintenance business!!! read more

Did impeccable and reasonably priced work in just hours replacing my tires. I'm more than happy.

Last time I was in the shop, TomCat told me it was time to start thinking about a new bike. Sheesh! I'm not gonna buy a new bike if you keep making the old one ride like it's new! Thanks for the old/new ride, TC! read more

I just picked my playa bike up from tomcat bikes! Super helpful, friendly, and effective service. Highly recommend!

Just got my bike! So happy, it was ready in 2 days (new but had basket/fender added). Tom is very nice and knowledgeable. I will definitely be returning for repairs as they come up. Cant believe I paid as much as people spend on a car payment yet it is all mine. Yay! Thanks, Tom. read more

Never have I felt so comfortable in a bike shop! So...I am not an avid rider... but I do own a bike and it is a nice bike. I like it... but it has been sitting in the garage for a long time and needed to be checked out. Went all the way to WTF Bikes from my home in Happy Valley because of what people have said about them....and I can say that everyone has been right. They made me feel comfortable ....answered all my questions, gave my bike a safety checkup and all for a very reasonable price. I just bought a bike for my soon to be 5 year old from the big giraffe store (you know the one...the one that you almost can never avoid forever if you have a kiddo) ... but bought it in the box in hopes to take it to WTF Bikes to have it properly assembled and have a safety checkup even though it is brand new. I would have called and asked to drop it off today if they were open but hell, I can't blame them for being closed on a holiday. I look forward to years of fun with the amazing people at WTF Bikes taking good care of all the bikes in my little family. read more

Tom was great. Extremely knowledgeable. Gave an honest assessment of the various options for tuning up and/or overhauling my bike - a Trek Pilot; a classic 21 speed road bike. He went over the whats and whys and the cost-benefit of the various options. I went with a pretty major upgrade and it was worth the price. My 15-year old bike is riding better than ever. read more

Portland is all about bikes, everyone knows that! But here's the thing: while there are an astounding number of custom bike shops & every possible accessory for every sort of bike you may have, there's also a dearth of jobs. Translated, this means people like me lust after gorgeous bikes all the time, yet must work within our budgets & work with what we already have. Enter Tom Daly at WTF bike repair. BTW, 'WTF' stands for 'Well Tuned Fast', in case you thought otherwise. The shop is small & is located in a parking lot/food cart spot on the corner of 11th & SE Clay. The prices are fair & Tom is friendly. He strikes me as someone who will not steer you in the wrong direction. He seems like a straight shooter as far as what your bike actually needs. If you have a bike which needs some TLC & you are not adept @ DIY, take her to WTF!! read more

Very helpful. They're helping me get setup before I move and they've been very kind with helping me get my bike back in my car im unable to do. Decent prices. I'd recommend. read more

My bike was in desperate need of some TLC. It had been sitting in my hall closet for year and a half when I finally decided it was time to make biking part of my commute. There are about 1,000 bike shops in Portland and since I know next to nothing about what I need I wanted to make sure I found a shop that wouldn't take advantage of my naive self. WTF was one of the only shops on yelp that had more 5 star reviews than anything else. And several people had talked about how great they were treated, how quickly the work was done, and that the price was less than expected. I was sold. I swung by the shop about an hour before they closed on Tuesday and explained my situation (needed a tune-up, probably new break pads, but besides that I had no idea) and Tom gave me an estimate on costs and told me it would be done in about 2 days. Less than 24 hours later I get a call telling me it was all ready. I picked up my bike and it looked brand new. I couldn't believe it. Tom was also really helpful in explaining how to use the stem shifters (see, clueless) and he told me that my frame had a small crack and gave me advice on what to look out for so I know when to bring it back in. Even though it's a bit of a trek down Powell from where I live, I'll still bring my bike back to WTF. The cost was cheaper than I imagined, the work was speedy, and my bike is riding like it's brand new. read more

1. These guys are awesome. I know nothing about bikes and they weren't a bunch of a-holes about it (which, truth be told, I was kind of expecting). I asked a bunch of questions and they were super friendly and helpful. Now I felt like the a-hole for assuming as such. Womp womp... 2. As noted in #1, since I'm no bike connoisseur I didn't want to shell out a ton of cash on a fancy little number. I just wanted a bike to get me around town and let me be one with the people. Found the perfect one. A nice little used bike they fixed up: Fuji frame, new Schwinn seat, and a bunch of other jargon I know nothing about. But regardless, it rides like a beaut. 3. I'm a tiny gal. However, the bike noted in #2 above does not look like a child's bike. And for that I thank you, WTF Bikes. Just like Baby Bear's porridge, this bike was just right. 4. Did I mention how nice these guys are? Oh, I did? Well...I CAN'T SAY IT ENOUGH. read more

This is the place you want to go for bikes, Tom is a god for anything to do with bikes. I been going to his shop just bout when he opened the place. So about 6 months. He is really helpful and will do almost anything to get your bike ready to ride. You don't have to do appointment's, you can just roll up and tell him what ya need. A lot of times Tom will do the job right there, like a flat, derailleur issues, brakes. He also is really cheap, compared to bike n hike etc. Support WTF bikes. P.S. Tom has great music playing when you're in the shop, sometimes the music will get your fingers snapping. read more

Awesome!!!! A little gem of a store. I'm very new to road bikes and the area. Matt was very patient and took the time to make sure the bike I purchased was right for me. In addition, he provided me with a road bike 101 class. Although their store is small, their customer service and ability to make you feel at home is BIG. I did have the opportunity to go to larger bike stores in the Portland area. All seemed very cash oriented. LOVE. THESE. GUYS. Every dealing that I've had with Matt and Tom has been top shelf--full of genuinely kind and approachable attitudes and a serious appreciation for customer service. I bought my first bike, my lil work horse at this shop, owner was very cool, really knowledgeable and straight up. The service/labor prices are SUPER reasonable and you get the sense that these guys will truly finesse your bike back to life. The shop is small but mighty, and with every service, you leave with the confidence that Matt and Tom will stand behind their work. To me, that is the best part, and its another reason that I'm happy to tell anyone who will listen to take their bike baby to WTF. read more

I bought a bike for $25 on offer up because I'm broke and needed a way to get around. Took it into Tom to see what could be done, and he told me the truth; the bike wasn't worth what I'd pay to fix it.
