Matthew is beyond amazing! I first went to him to figure out if I even wanted a Rad Power Bike, as his shop was the closest one to me. When I visited, he was incredibly honest and upfront about everything he knew. He also let my girlfriend and me test ride one of the bikes, and from that moment, I knew I wanted one. I ended up getting a Radster Commuter bike, and Matthew assembled it for me. There was a fee, but it was totally worth it because he did it professionally and was very respectful of my time. I truly felt like he cared about my purchase. Matthew is not only respectful, but he also gives you the honest truth, which is exactly what I was looking for. A HUGE thank you to this shop! read more

A friend recommended Upcycles and I'm very pleased with my experience there. Matthew at Upcycles helped me get the perfect ebike. I am new to ebikes and he showed me everything I needed to know, was responsive, communicative, and friendly, and did a great job assembling it. A+ read more

Matthew the owner was incredibly helpful and communicative during my Rad bike purchase. He stayed in touch prior to the bike arriving and had the bike ready when promised. When I picked up the bike he provided all the details needed about the bike and even helped us ensure the bike was secure on our new bike rack. I highly recommend Upcycle and am very grateful I chose this bike shop for my new bike! read more

Thanks so much to the staff of upcycle for not only selling me the items to fix my bike but physically giving me a hand so I'll have a better idea of what to do next time. They also purchased the items I would need to have in store if I were to ever need them again. I appreciate y'all! read more

Upcycles - Bike, Bike Shop - Bikes Near Me - Portland, Oregon

Every thing went well, five stars for Matthews knowledge and skill set, a bicycle technician from old school to the latest, including ebikes. Friendly, detailed oriented, and a good sense of humor, he is on time with projects assigned. read more

Excellent advice, so pleased with my reconditioned bike. Great service. Mathew was great to work with. read more

Fantastic service, thank you. Brought my LectricXP in for a brake upgrade. The work got done two days quicker than expected. Will always come back here for future service on this bike. read more

Got a flat on a brand new bike I had for less than 24-hours. Kai saved the day. Answers emails right away, which is so fantastic! Super fast service, reasonable/fair prices. Excellent work. I'm thrilled to find a new awesome mechanic in Portland. Site review: Parking is tight in the neighborhood so if you have a flat and the wheel is still on the bike, be prepared to walk the bike a bit on your flat. read more

Great guy. Whatever you need, he's on it. He took great care of me, and my ride -- it's never felt better.

Super professional, fast, and affordable service. Incredibly friendly. I always prioritize this bike shop!!!!

I came to Kai with a really big ask and was pressured into going forward with repairs despite asking to bring my bike home to think about it. Long story short if you would like to spend $500 and days of your life for a whole bunch on incompatible and inappropriate parts for your bike, I highly recommend Upcycles. I just did not have a good experience here. read more

I discovered the shop because I had a flat tire and even though it was near closing time he stayed open until I got there. Soon after, my bike needed a tuneup and he was one of the only shops open on a Monday (my day off). Quick turnaround time, very knowledgeable and friendly shop owner who did good work at a fair price. I'll be back! read more

I brought my teenagers bike in to get fixed during covid-19 outbreak. Supporting small business and getting things done since I'm not working. It's an old Giant mountain bike I bought second hand for my son several years ago. After years of ownership by my son, it needed a lot of help. Kai at Upcycles did the work. Communication excellent and my son says it's never ran this smooth ever. Thank you! read more

I wish there was a way to rate it 0 stars. These guys are thieves. Took my bike there and they seemed nice enough. A week later still no call about my bike being complete. Showed up and they were done with the bike, but had done a bunch of unauthorized work. The excuse I got was that they could not do the chain without replacing the cassette. They could not adjust the brakes without replacing all the cables. Complete BS. The bike was only about 200 miles old and the old parts are missing. STAY AWAY, You will get screwed. read more

Upcycles does it again for me. Friendly. Knowledgeable. Great service. Fast. In my neighborhood. Those things don't always go together. The day I moved to Portland they became my shop. I came in for some adjustments. Instead of doing them and then me having to come back again and again, aka $$$ for them, he referred me to another shop to get a professional fitting first. After my fitting I came back to Upcycles and they finished the job, working with the other shop that did the fitting. Gotta love the fact that he would rather my bike got set up right, then him make all the money. read more

I always have a great experience when I come in here, although I've only ever come into buy things or ask questions, so I can't speak to their service regarding tune-ups and things like that. However, they have always given me space to change a flat, and multiple times have offered to give me an old set of nylon levers when I didn't have any, or an old bike light they had laying around, for free! I don't have a lot of money to spend on fancy stuff, but whenever I need a new something for my bike, I buy it here. Always knowledgeable and friendly, they will take time out from their busy day to answer questions or offer the advice you need. Great neighborhood shop. read more

Kai was really helpful and got the job needed done. Good price and quality work. Highly recommend if you're in the Portland area and need your bike repaired. Will come back if anything happens (most likely user error from myself haha). read more

Very helpful and didn't shame me for being a newbie! I came in over Memorial Day weekend and wanted to check out their Public Bikes selection, unsure if it was a good fit for what I needed as a beginner/light commuter. I got honest feedback on the brand and a lot of help with picking the basic accessories. Emiliano was friendly and knowledgeable. I love my bike and will definitely be referring my friends to Upcycles :) read more

Great experience with Upcycles. Bought a bike online and tried to assemble it myself, which was a mistake. Upcycles responded quickly to my inquiry, and charged a fair price to check my work and finish the bike. Even with the pandemic concerns, he was quick and courteous and wore a mask, which was appreciated. Highly recommend! read more

Great service at reasonable prices - what more could you ask for? Really appreciate the tune-up - have ridden a couple hundred miles and still going strong! read more

Kind, knowledgeable, funny and generous with their time, I'm inclined to still see Mark & Kai for my maintenance needs, even though I don't work in the neighborhood anymore, and live 6 miles away! They always seem to do more than I asked for, for instance drilling a hole and reattaching a floppy mudflap this last time. Support! read more

Absolutely the best! Kai is the nicest, and does great work at a great price. It's great to have a place like this in the neighborhood that I'm happy to support! read more

From working on an ancient pedi-cab (so I could tote my elderly mother around town) to repairing my found stolen bike so it was better than new, I have developed a great deal of respect for Upcycles. There is nothing remotely pretentious about the place or the people who run the shop, and they have showed me and my family nothing but kindness and compassion. When I think about a great Portland neighborhood business that respects its community and its patrons, Upcycles comes to mind first. Thank you to Mark and Kai for keeping my wheels spinning smoothly. read more

This shop is awesome. Kai is honest, super nice, and always takes the time to explain things. He tuned up my bike and changed my chain and brakes for super cheap and had my bike back to me in no time. Take your bike here! read more

Kai & Crew are just what you want in a bike repair shop: honest, fast, and reasonable. Their place is small and unimposing (and what's wrong with that?!), but don't be fooled you if you care about stuff like that. They know what they're doing. Go there. Get it fixed. Get on the road. read more

Upcycles is a fantastic neighborhood bike shop. Kai has everything you need and is extremely knowledgable on everything bike related. He is prompt and I can count on my bike to be serviced correctly the first time. I would feel comfortable referring anyone to Upcycles! read more

We have had nothing but great and timely service at UP. Our repairs seem to be done quicker than they let on and the prices are very reasonable. They even put me in touch with someone who was selling a road bike that I ended up buying. I would recommend the shop to anyone but be sure to call fist to gauge how busy they are. read more

Excellent service! My dad and I both shipped our bikes here via BikeFlights and they were able to put them together and give one a full tuneup in less than 2 days. Great to work with and easy to coordinate shipping to! read more

The guys are great! I've had them tune up and repair with my bike and my son's. Their prices are as low pr better than other shops, & they are fast (I had same day or one day turn around for the two times they've repaired my bike, and the repairs and tune up on my son's bike.) Both Kai & Emiliano are friendly and communicative, do quality work at a fair price. read more

Kai and Mark are both really great guys and awesome bike mechanics. I have been going to them for about six months and they always exceeded my expectations. Not only did they put my bike together in record time, but they have also been prompt with all of my minor bike service needs. I rarely go to any other bike shop and I would absolutely recommend UpCycles to anyone who desires a shop that is 100% awesome and 0% pretentious. read more

5 stars! Best bike repair ever! Nice non intimidating atmosphere, dropped off my bike at 11 done by 1:30 and for a better price then most others I've been to. No complaints here what so ever I will be back many times in the future but today I ride!! read more

I stopped in after slipping a chain and bending my front chain ring, conveniently a couple blocks away from Upcycles. This shop is just off the bustling area of killingsworth and conveniently right next to a pizza shop... Be still my heart. Walking into unknown bike shops, particularly as a female, can be intimidating, degrading, patronizing, and I more often than not walk out feeling like a dumb woman who doesn't understand a damn about bicycles. But, look. I'm trying my best to learn about these complicated and finicky contraptions, and Ky, the owner of Upcycles, was so welcoming, open to helping me, as well as willing to educate me on some things that needed attention other than my bent chain ring. I was in and out in less than an hour and am so thankful for the time Ky put towards my bike! I made it home safely and will now work on adjusting a few more things to keep these wheels rolling. Thanks Upcycles! Your shop has been open for many years for good reason. Keep up that rad work! read more

Great spot! Decent prices and super friendly staff - I came in to get brake pads replaced, (ball joint/socket on brake handle? Idk), handlebar tape replaced. All done in 40 minutes! I'll definitely be back. read more

Great bike shop! Honest, caring, bike passionate, what more could you ask for? Oh, and I was even offered a tasty cold beverage while Kai tuned my bike up! read more

Friendly, timely service and a really attentive, gorgeous job on my bike tune-up/rebuild.

Mark and Kai provided excellent, timely, affordable service on 3 bikes in my family, including building me some custom replacement wheels for my road bike. They are extremely knowledgable, but don't look down on less sophisticated cyclists like too many shops in this town; proactive in identifying "on the horizon" repair needs to aid in planning; and great about throwing in little tweaks and fixes along with the main repair job without itemizing and charging for everything they touch on your bike as some repair shops are wont to do. I commute 35 miles round trip on my bike to get it serviced at this awesome, friendly local bike shop. read more

I gave UpCycles a call because they are right down the street from me. I first talked to Kai, but when I brought my bike in, I spoke with Matt. What I really liked about Matt is that he explained the mechanics of my bike to me. I mean, typically, if I have air in my tires, I think I'm good to go. He explained that my brake pads needed to be changed (It had been recommended previously that I just get them adjusted), I needed a new chain( the teeth were stretched and make it more challenging to pedal and could affect the crank....or gasket..something), and how to cut down on my spokes brakes, by changing the whole wheel instead of just the tube. The tire that was put on the bike was actually less than what I was quoted. I'm always for paying less than what I was quoted. Matt said if anything went wrong, to just bring it back in. It took longer than it was initially supposed to, which made me a bit upset, but I did receive a phone call and when I went to pick it up, Matt even stayed longer than the posted hours to wait for me. Add in a great Yelp* deal that gives me $45 worth of service and I paid $30 for it and I'm gonna be pedaling for joy! read more

Spending the majority of a day looking for a cycle appropriate for longer rides and feeling disappointed, I dropped by UpCycles as last stop on the way home (my first time checking the place out). I looked around the shop and spotted a nice, appropriately sized cycle built on a Trek 1220 aluminum frame. For a very fair price, Kai offered to re-outfit the frame with a combination of new and gently used parts suitable for bicycle touring. Further, he was able/willing to accommodate the somewhat small timeframe I had available (as a decent length over-night ride out of town was planned for the following weekend). Kai got to work on it Monday, and I was able to pick up the finished project Friday evening. The cycle felt comfortable and solid- I had an enjoyable, problem-free time riding that weekend (which, happily, continues to be the case). read more

I had my bike taken in for a tune up. Kai really knows his bikes and was willing to teach me all the little tricks about brake adjustments and casette replacements. As far as the casette replacement goes, many shops were unwilling to change out my 28s to anything higher than a 30 without replacing the derailleur. He eyeballed it, assured me he could put a 32 on there, and it worked! He also trued my wheels and showed me the art of wheel truing. He is super friendly and for the work he did, his price seemed very reasonable. Highly recommend! read more

First time I went to UpCycles, last summer, I received good service and a great tuneup with brake pad change for $50 and it acted like a brand new bike after. Therefore, I naturally took it here again after checking in advance to make sure I could get it serviced over the weekend to pick up by Sunday. When I went in, Mark recommended a new chain but said I could still get it by Sunday. Also gave me some recommendations as I'm in the middle of shopping for a new commuter. However, I didn't even get as much as a phone call on Sunday, so shortly before closing (after having no bike all weekend - a big deal for someone without a car) I walked over and turns out they hadn't even BEGUN to work on it. Kai first said to come back the next day, then said he'd try to work on it tonight, but then said he wouldn't even replace the chain without replacing the cassette, and so actually it'd be til at least Wednesday before I could get my bike back. With my workplace being almost 5 miles each way and not easily accessible by bus, this was not realistic, and really, I would rather give my hard-earned money to a place I can trust will have something ready when they promise. Bike shops in Portland seem to have the attitude that good service is optional, which is really too bad. Ended up walking over to Cascade Cycles afterwards and buying a new commuter bike, and because of how GREAT they treated me, plan on taking my older bike to them for a tuneup instead. read more
