Test rode electric bikes last fall at multiple stores. Liked that they didn't come on the ride with you and trusted you wouldn't do something stupid. Good selection and not pushy sales people. We shopped around and came back. Very helpful staff and also had a 100 mile tune up included. Good accessory selection but can also go to their other larger store a few blocks away that doesn't have electric bikes but has more accessories. Only negative is no parking lot. Not too hard to find parking but are some people camping near by so need to be carful saw piles of broken glass to the north. read more

Great bike shop but some staff don't know what the heck they're doing. This is a great bike shop with lots of grape bike accessories clothing and more. However they have a few employees that don't know what they're talking about when it comes to helping customers with bike parts by clothing that should not be working at the bike shop. I went in today to get a new bike to which I bought and I was going to get some new bike tires for my bicycle grab a bike. But a guy in a black covid mask tried telling me oh I don't need tires and my bike can't take bigger tires when it can the customer tried telling me I need to get rid of my bike and buy a better bike. Which is poor customer service by that employee. If this bike shops going to keep staying in business they need to get rid of employees that don't know what they're doing and don't know what they're talking about and actually know how to help a customer and know what they're doing. This is something the owner of the bike store needs to work on meaning the owner of this bike shop needs to get better qualified employees that know about bikes and then can do a better job of helping customers. read more

My wife has been on the look-out for a light weight quasi-hybrid E-bike mostly for street but that will roll on decomposed granite, hard pack sand trails not so technical in the Arizona Sonoran desert. Mostly she'll cruise the Portland metro, up and down the hills, and spin the Esplanade Willamette River trails. She needs E-bike power to climb - her knees are old and stiff, joints a little creaky. She did a test ride on the Specialized Vado SL 4.0 at 33.5 pounds. She bought it! Great ride! I have purchased my mountain bikes through River City over 6 years. Service is always great and dependable. Everybody in the store is knowledgable wit some super tech-know-geeks - I love to learn from! Back to the E bike. Stu was the over-the-top E-Bike Geek. Super knowledge, cool, easy going dude. Answered all the questions and made suggestions to make the Specialized more of a comfortable ride for my senior citizen wife. Like Stu is bringing in bars for her to try out and upgrade. Stu recommended suspension stems and "thud buster" suspension seat to smooth out the bumps, rocks and roots on the trail. Had in a cush seat for her tush and Ran Face flat pedals. Go see Stu, he'll show you want you can do - on an E bike. River City on Belmont has a showroom full of all E-bikes for road, hybrid, mountain, and more galore. read more

I went in to buy a new tube for my bike as I had flatted out not once but twice earlier in the day. I changed the tube right in the shop and, just after getting the wheel back on my bike it blew! It was right before closing so I decided to go home and figure it out later. Just as I was leaving though, one of the guys from the shop stopped me since he noticed what was going on. We took my bike in the back and removed the wheel. Long story short, he was able to quickly discern that the sidewall of my tire had split due to the left brake pad getting out of alignment with the wheel rim, and developing a thin sharp ridge along its upper edge that cut into the tire over time. Wow! It would have taken me forever to figure that out. Kudos to them, will be returning for sure. read more

I bought my first real bike today and it was such a great experience! Originally went to the other River City location and was referred to the Belmont one for bikes more in my price point. They are really close together so we were able to walk over easily. We were greeted by the beautiful baby angel Kipper, the shop pup, as we walked in. Nothing warms the heart on a winters day like an unexpected shop pup. We were helped by Brandon who was spectacularly patient and knowledgeable. This was my first bike as an adult. I was in Portland on the search for a new bike, and I initially visited the regular River City Bicycles store. Good thing I stopped myself from buying a bike there because I wanted to try my luck to see if I could find a bike at the outlet store instead. To my surprise, the outlet store also included an indoor bike track for you to test out the bikes. Although the selection of bikes was fewer to choose from, there were still quite a few bikes that were in my size (XS), and many of them were decent quality. I liked how they organized the bikes by size with different colored tags so that it was easy to figure out where to look. I tested out a few bikes and I ended up with a cute hybrid bike for less than $600! All the accessories in the store were also 10% off so I bought a bike lock as well. I knew I definitely saved a lot of money buying my bike here vs. buying one in Seattle. After buying my bike here, I will also get a free tune-up after 100 miles as well as a lifetime of free brake checks! I think a lot of the perks are the same between the outlet store and the regular store. I can't remember the guy's name who helped me but he was super helpful in helping me pick out my bike, considering the last time I owned a bike was in elementary school. I highly recommend this place if you are shopping for a bike and would like to save additional money! read more

I've been a fan of River City Bicycles ever since my first visit almost three years ago. Every trip back there, and to the Outlet store, I'm reminded why. Both locations offer outstanding service. Most recently, I popped in to River City Bicycles Outlet 15 minutes before closing time to get some advice on a wonky front shifter on the Specialized Diverge I'd bought from River City in early 2015. I figured I needed new cable housing, which I was prepared to buy and install later. Right away, the mechanic on duty threw my bike onto a repair stand and got to work diagnosing the problem. Some minutes later, he returned my bike, all better, and explained what he'd done to fix it. When I asked what I owed them, the guy at the register said "nothing!" Because I'd bought the bike at River City, the fix was free of charge. Can't get much better than that. I came in because I had popped a flat tire and work nearby. Didn't know what to expect; sometimes bike shop staff can be rather trying. I was able to get the help from their very chill staff, who broke down the available products and looked up my exact bike model to verify that I was getting what I needed. I went home and changed the tire, only to find that upon remounting the wheel, it rode horribly! Bringing the bike in for repairs, they determined that the rear wheel needed to be trued and the brakes were broke. For the super low price of $52, they got me back on the road with a smile on my face same day. Dealing with such understanding and helpful people made me feel very good and I will certainly be returning soon read more

Being a good Portlandian can get EXPENSIVE! Have you seen the prices of craft cocktails, organic bowls and "I Love My Subaru" t-shirts? How are you supposed to do all that on your part-time record store salary? Fortunately, River City Bicycles has made one Portland requirement much more accessible: commuting by bike. Their outlet shop off SE Belmont and Grand offers up last year's models of quality bicycle brands at deep discounts without scrimping on the customer service. They might not have the biggest of selections, but if you can't find a bicycle here that you like, grab it and don't look back! I bought a pretty great bike for under $450. My husband found a bike for a similar price, even though he had test ridden the exact same year and model of bike at a store across town for almost $300 more! I was concerned that with the rock-bottom prices we might not get all of the perks of buying from a non-outlet. Wrong. I get a free tune-up after 100 miles, and lifetime brake checks! Sweet. What else is there to say? They offer up a selection of accessories and apparel that is comprehensive but not all that deep. They had a good variety of lights, but the helmet and apparel selection was pretty limited. Still, that's not such a big deal, and I believe that everything in the store (other than the bikes, duh) are 10% the retail price. I met Ethel here. I came in looking for a bike that I could ride year-round. My previous bike, a cheap piece o' crap from the jump, gave me continued problems even in the best of circumstances. Broken shifters, popped spokes, you name it. As much as I liked the bike, it let me down on countless occasions. The very last time it did so, I nearly had a Basil Fawlty/tree branch moment with it. A recent change in life circumstance left me with two things: a small sum of discretionary income and a desire to improve my overall well-being. Knowing that I've never been fond of exercising at gyms and that I do really enjoy bike riding, I knew it'd be best for me to get a quality bike that suited the kind of riding I like which is on streets and paved paths. I also wanted something comfortable so I settled on a commuter-style bike before I went looking. I started out browsing at a few other stores, finding bikes that'd probably be okay but weren't all that sexy. At one store, known for its upper end commuter bikes, the cheapest thing I found was a grand and it was a ladies' bike. You know, a bike for ladies. While it was a well-made bike, I'm just not in a skirt often enough to justify the swoop down crossbar. I needed to keep searching. A visitor at my house mentioned the River City outlet, which I pass by every day on the way home. I used the very next available window in my jampacked schedule to mosey my way over. When I arrived, I admired the selection of bikes. I circled around the place once, taking in all the variety and sizes available. I saw one or two that seem doable and are within my price range but I decided to enlist some help from the staff. The guy that helped me showed me one or two that, yeah, would have been okay. As we came around the front of the store again, he introduced me to Her. Oh my. I know I walked right past her on the first go-round but getting properly introduced made all of the difference. I was immediately attracted. The first thing I notice are the handlebars. I liken them to the eyes on a person, which are always the first thing I notice about someone. I almost felt like I needed to avert my gaze to avoid the appearance of staring although I didn't want her to think I was bashful. I probably was dismantling her with my eyes but it was just one of those moments of intense mutual attraction that transcend standard levels of polite behavior. I had to get a taste. I gave her a nice little ride and was amazed at how well we worked together. Many needs were anticipated and, indeed, satisfied. Everything was at my fingertips and we performed as one. I never knew riding a bike could be so fulfilling. I knew when I got back to the store, that we'd end up going home together. And we did. Since that day, I've made it a point to ride as much as I can, even when it is liquid sunshining out. As a result, I've dropped a decent amount of weight and hope to continue doing so. Ethel has been a really good partner for me in my new life. I call her that as a play on the word 'ethyl', often used in cars. In this sense, I fuel Ethel and Ethel fuels me. We have synergy. Plus, she's just a classy gal of a bike and the name mirrors that. Don't get me wrong, though...she can get wild when you want her to be. As for RCBO, the staff have been so helpful on the times I've either needed accessories or minor repairs. A broken chain guard was replaced as I waited and for free. They take the time to explain things and seemingly have inexhaustible patience, although I didn't purposely set out to test such a thing. Quality biking accoutrements are sold at a considerable discount. But they also have some high-end pieces so don't go thinking they sell dreck. I've been superduperhappy with everything I've purchased there. Thank you, River City Bike Outlet, for being such intuitive matchmakers. We'll be happy together for years to come. read more

There is nothing worse than getting the bait and switch. Portland is a bike city. You need a decent bike to get around comfortably, or at least it is nice to have one. However, this means that there are a million bike shops and none of them seem to have very good sales in the summer. My wife has been in need of a new bike for some time, and I have wanted to get one for her. Her needs are simple: she wants a hybrid bicycle with a rack and fenders and 3-15 gears. After a great deal of research, I decided to go with a bike listed on the River City Outlet's online inventory. Knowing that things can sell out quick, I called ahead to make sure the bike we wanted was available. The person who answered the phone confirmed that the bike was available and would be ready for me to buy that day. When I arrived a few hours later with my wife (who hates bike shops), we found that the bike wasn't really available and that they only had a similar model that cost about 40% more and offered no tangible benefit. I was furious. There was no offer of a discount or anything for the inconvenience - just a sort of "sorry, bro." I felt like we weren't allowed to buy a bike if we weren't willing to spend $1000+ dollars on one. I don't know if this was a deliberate bait and switch or if the shop is just incompetent, but I am very upset that I bought my last bike from them and would never shop at River City Bicycles again. Don't come here if you aren't a bike expert willing to spend thousands of dollars on your toy. They may sell hybrid bikes, but this isn't a shop for ordinary people, despite the brands that they sometimes carry and the prices that they occasionally offer. read more

I was getting back into bike riding and I figured I'd get an economical bike to get me out on the road. I was really on the fence about a specialized hybrid, not sure if I wanted something with disk brakes, etc, and the sales guy said I could go ahead and try out this bike for a month or 2 and when I decide they will be there to help! I took the bike and after a going mountain biking a few times the hybrid was not going to cut it. I go back to the store for my return and they unpleasantly let me know about the 20% restocking fee! whoa! I really didn't like their attitude and the manager was annoyed and very short in temperament. Bummer! I went ahead and paid the fee but I won't be going back since that Dictator was a shrew! i'm sure as long as you are buying something he is great, but don't try to return! This summer we were on a quest to get 'real' bicycles. So we headed over to River City Outlet. My husband and I both had bad experiences at another bike shop (not worth mentioning here), where the staff was snobby, unhelpful and downright rude. Our experience at River City was quite the opposite. The staff is extremely helpful and very patient. We ended up looking at tons of bikes. I think I test rode at least 5 different ones. We made a few trips to the store before committing to a Raleigh (for me) and a Ridley (for my husband). Their service is topnotch. You can get affordable bikes in other places, but for us it was the people that sold us on getting them at River City. I think their selection is good and the price was right for us. Yea for Paul in the service department. I purchased a bike from RC about 10 months ago and had a mechanical problem that ended my ride. All of my riding buddies said good luck it will take 2 weeks to get fixed. I showed up at River Cycles and Paul came out and said I remember you from last year. Don't worry and the vibe was ready in 3 hours. Fantastic. Today I called Paul and told him I wanted to convert to tubeless tires. I have been very impressed with the service that I've received at this store, after special ordering a commuter bike here this summer. The bike has had some issues, but the staff here has been very helpful, and even taken my bike in, unscheduled, for some short order repairs, when I needed the repairs done so I could get home. They also gave me a nice loaner bike when I had some warranty repairs done that required special parts to be ordered. I would definitely buy a bike here again. read more

He thought they had one left in storage, or in the back, but they had sold out. He pointed me to quite a few other options right on budget, but I fell in love with a newly built, and very reasonably priced Cannondale, not too far off budget. Chinook Book has a couple of coupons to use if you're purchasing some accessories. Even on previous visits the staff have been super helpful, and their maintenance guarantees are sweet. I didn't​ feel pressured​ to buy but they just gave honest feedback​ and worked within my budget.
