Came in for the weekend to Houston and called West End Bicycles when I was leaving the airport. I told them I would just make it by closing time and asked them to get the bike rentals ready. When I arrived at 6pm the doors were locked and they weren't answering the phone. A customer leaving told us that the employees were still inside. Finally a few minutes later we caught an employee leaving and asked if we could pick up the bikes we called about. Even though it was less than five minutes after the close and there were several people inside the store we were refused. Talk about bad customer service. read more

Knowlegeable cycle folks but very arrogant...not everyone can dedicate their life to a two-wheeled non-motorized vehicle. How about helping without the attitude? Watch your wallet in their shop. I had a tube pop on me the other day and also decided to buy a new tire for $55 (which seemed high but I don't really know). The guy said "we'd be glad to change the tube and tire for you". I said "great". When it came time to ring me up for tube and tire they also charged me $7 to change things out. Fine, charge me $7 but how about mentioning that you have a surcharge instead of selling it like you don't. Conversely I recently went to NTB to have a tire repaired as two nails punctured it. They patched both holes and put me spare back under the bed for $0. I'm in the market for a decent mountain bike, no chance I'm giving West End my money even though I live a few blocks away. read more

Even the best bike shops in Houston (and there is no shortage of awesome bike shops in H-town) simply cannot hold a candle to the passionate bike culture environment, service, competent mechanical services, and specialized knowledge that exists at West End Bicycles. This is a one of a kind bike shop where the owner's decades long love affair with everything "bicycle" clearly translates to the construction of this one of a kind shop. You won't find a nicer, more competent group of mechanics (they are perfectionists) and sales people. I have come to know the West Oaks family and cannot say enough great things about this shop and the employees.... but in a nutshell, there is nothing they cannot do- so West End Bikes is well worth the drive no matter where you are coming from. While you are there, check out the many vintage bikes on display and seek Daniel out if you are curious to learn about the bikes and the evolution of the racing bikes. This place is so great. I'm a relatively new biker. I had moved to the museum district/ montrose area a few months ago and decided that I want to start biking around the neighborhood instead of using my car. After reading the great reviews on here, i decided to check this place out with my sister and my mom. When we walked in, there were only a few salespeople already helping people, so we just did a little browsing for a second. As soon as he was free, a man named Blane came over and asked us what we were looking for. I told him that I didn't know anything about bikes, but I was looking for something to ride around town, to bars/cafes, grocery store, friends houses in the area etc. He immediately had like four bikes to recommend and let me ride all of them. He even pulled a few out for my sister and my mom to ride! We spent about an hour or trying a couple different bikes out. He explained the differences between each bike, and why they'd be good for me and all that. Eventually I found the perfect bike, but they didn't have it in my size. Blane said they could order it and give me a call when it came in next week. After, he showed us different locks and gave me tips on where to lock it up at the grocery store (haha). I had such a great experience here. Everyone was so nice and friendly, not snobby at all. I was a little nervous to come in, since some serious bikers I know are kind of pretentious about biking, but there was no snobbery here! I was looking to get a fork installed on a bare frame last week and called around. These guys weren't open yet and since I wanted to get a jump on the project I went to the first guys that said yes over on White oak Blue Line Bike Lab.. What a mistake.. A little background on me before I go any further.. From 14-21 I was employed as a bicycle mechanic, salesman and custom build guru in both Houston and Los Angeles so I'm not talking about a subject I have no knowledge in. I'm 45 now and still into bikes and do most of my own service but I leave the specialized jobs to the guys with the correct tools. So I call Blue Line and the very friendly guy on the phone says he can do the install today and to come on over. So I'm happy and heading that way thinking man are the stars aligned today.. I pull up, grab my frame and fork and head inside thinking these guys are great for doing this.. As soon as I walked thru the door a sense of doom and gloom took over. This place was a wreck and as I stood there waiting I began to realize that the staff was not interested in helping at all. The first guy to say anything to me was working on a bike near the front of the store and he didn't even look up at me while telling me I need to talk to the guy in the back. So I walk back and with his back to me he asks what do you need.. I said that I had called a few minutes ago about getting this fork installed.. He still doesn't look at me and without skipping a beat says no way! I asked him why no way if the guy on the phone said yes? His answer was that guys a moron.. I walked out Ten minutes later I'm at West End and man what a different experience! First the idiots at the other shop had maybe two customers in the shop when they couldn't be bothered. West End was packed with at least twenty customers and everyone was busy but still had time to help a guy. I asked if they could solve my problem ( I said nothing about my earlier experience ) and the answer was absolutely! So here I sit typing my review with a fully assembled bike. Thank you West End for your professional service! Just a note to all the guys wrenching on their own bikes. For this job I was charged $28 (a steal) and if I wanted to do this at home the cheapest tools are over $150. The shop likely used the best tools for the job and their investment easily exceeds $400. Add to that the $1000's in training, years of combined experience and I think that was the best $28 I've spent in a while. Support your local shop! read more

oh, thank Heaven! i, being a big blog reader, found a pretty bicycle online, ordered it, and then realised i needed to have the thing assembled (because me + bike parts + tools + instructions = bike parts + shredded instructions covered in tears). the incredible, wonderful, remarkably quick guys at west end saved the day (and my bicycle!); they received my bike parts in the mail on tuesday, called me on wednesday to let me know it was in, and called me thursday to let me know i could come and pick up an assembled bike! so fast! when i got to the store they made sure to tell me about everything that was going on with my new bike (the back fender had gotten bent in shipping, but they were able to fix it without cracking the paint! magicians!), they took it for a turn around the store for me to make sure everything was sound and that it handled well, and helped me pick out bike lights. i wound up staying there about 15 minutes longer than i had to, drooling at all the gorgeous bikes they have in the shop (some really good-looking vintage and new; i likely should have gone here before i ordered a bicycle from san francisco.), and the man who helped me out was really wonderful and talked to me about the ones i'd been eyeing. the point is, whatever you need where a bicycle is concerned, i think these folks can handle it. they were incredibly kind and helpful and (i think, anyhow) perfectly reasonable. i'm closer to a few other bike shops, but this will certainly be my shop of choice from last week on. read more

Cute shop. Lots of bikes. No bike racks out front to park your bike when you ride up. ? Dragged my bike in the store and put it by the front door. Walked around for 10-15 minutes and not one person acknowledged me. I went in looking for help with a basket or a rack for my bike. Thought I'd spend $50-100. But when no one helped me I just left. I found the $46.99 basket I was looking at at West End for $30 cheaper down the road. Hard to shop small when you get no service. Too bad b/c this is only a couple blocks from our new house after relocating from Atlanta. read more

I love that this bike shop is in our neighborhood! They've been very friendly and helpful i everything from shopping for a bike, to buying a bike, to the free first tune-up, to fixing a quick problem for me at no cost. The store has a lot of bikes and an experienced and knowledgeable sales staff. They're not cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for here! If you're in the market for a new bicycle or just to get your current one fixed up, I'd recommend stopping here first. read more

Ok, so I'm new to this whole bike riding thing and I was a little apprehensive about walking into a bike shop and looking around, but my apprehension quickly subsided as soon as I walked into West End Bicycles. The staff was so great about not 'over helping' me, but they kept an eye on me and when I did have a question they were there to help! This place is awesome. I think that cycling is an intimidating thing to get into and that there are too many levels to be considered. West End somehow makes it all make sense. The selection of bikes runs from top-of-the-line to walk-down-memory lane. They have fair prices, nice staff (who don't act like they are above you, not always like that in these places) and a great selection of products. I've been to this shop a few times. The staff is really nice. My dad and I went in to buy his first bike in January. Since he's new to biking he didn't know much about bikes, but Blaine was super helpful. He helped my dad choose an appropriate starter bike. He wasn't trying to sell him anything super expensive, but was more concerned about making sure my dad got the right bike. Blaine suggested he test ride a few bikes so he could get a feel for what he liked more and make sure he got the right size. He also threw in a free water bottle and cage which we thought was really nice! read more

I've been to many bike shops in many cities and states and West End is by far my favorite! Awesome service, friendly staff, and most importantly down to earth. My wife and I were looking for touring bikes and they got us set up right. We spoke with Thor who was the real deal. Had ridden around the entire coast of Iceland. He gave us a lot of great advice and just got us pumped for touring in general. We already had a good idea of what we wanted before we walked in (Surly disk truckers) but he showed us a few other models and recommended some alterations/accessories. We left feeling we made an informed decision. We spent over an hour testing riding and talking our first day. Called back a few days later and placed the order over the phone. We wanted a few parts swapped out which they did quickly and for a fair price. Got stuck in Houston traffic trying to come pick them up Friday evening. We called frantically thinking they wouldn't wait up. Blaine was super relaxed and said to come on by. I expected to walk in and see some agitated employees who wanted to get home on a friday night. It couldn't have been farther from the truth! They took their time helping us and made sure that we were completely happy. The bikes road great and we're built exactly how we wanted them. They include a 30 day tune up on new bike purchases. We'll be back! Support your LBS! For the negative reviews, they must have come in on either a bad day or had a bad attitude. They have been extremely attentive every time we've been in and contacted them. They are serious about biking, so they respond well to the same kind of people. read more

Best bike shop in Houston. They have a great selection, helpful staff, and good prices. Their mechanics are hands down the most knowledgeable I've come across and unlike most other shops, won't pressure you to buy something you don't need. I've bought several bikes from them and the service has been impeccable every time and their prices are better than anyone else in town. I've been to Bike Barn, Bicycle Sports and Fitness, etc. but I will keep coming back to this place every time. Right now this is my favorite bike shop in Houston. It looks unassuming from the outside, but the inside is really big. It's a really good medium between the huge shops like Bike Barn and the shops whose space is so small there is only enough room for a few bikes inside. Nothing wrong with either of those types of shops, I just prefer a shop like this. They're always knowledgeable too. I do most of my bike mechanical work at home on my bike repair stand and have most of the tools necessary. But when I come in for something, it's usually a specific problem that is addressed by expensive tools I don't own and would rarely use. For example, installing a PF bottom bracket or replacing a headset or cutting a fork down. All things that require specialized tools that aren't worth the investment for me because I do those things so infrequently. West End addresses what I need immediately while I wait and I either don't get charged or get charged something really reasonable. I also always see people in West End team jerseys at crits/cyclocross/road races, so really like how they support local cycling teams. Seeing that is actually what put them on my radar and the reason I visited the shop in the first place. Glad I did! read more

Wonderful local bike shop with very helpful staff. I was able to take my time test riding a great specialized bike around the area and I didn't feel rushed or pressured by any of the staff. They even extended a better deal than other bike shops were offering for it. I was also going to sell my old bike on Craigslist to help pay for the new one so they even offered to let me sell my other bike on their premises to avoid any potential craigslisty problems. Went to this bike shop this Memorial weekend to quickly get me back on track because I had broken my chain riding uphill at memorial trails. That was a total bummer because I didn't realize the chains had fallen off until I I started to pedal and it was way too easy with no friction and so I started my journey back to my car walking along side my bike for about 1 miles. Frustrated and feeling defeated but I wasn't going to let this setback prevent me from enjoying the rest of the day so I quickly looked up the nearest bike shop and found West End Bicycles. Made a quick call and drove less than a mile and I was there to get the chain replaced. They have a great variety of bikes to choose from and knowledgeable and friendly staff to quickly help you out when you're in a jam. I'll pay them a visit again but hope it's not going to be another chain gone missing episode II. read more

I walk in and start looking at products , 6-7 staff in shop and No one approaches me all staff were hanging around counter talking to each other . After 10 -15 minutes in the shop and wanting to ask advice but still no one approaches I take my purchase to counter - some dude with a ponytail looks at me like I'm a pain in the arse and why the hell am I in the shop disturbing him and mumbles a price .. it's not hard to show a bit of customer service and friendly welcoming with so many staff in shop with no customers except me - maybe that's why they have no customers ? read more

This is easily the best bike shop in town. Lots of knowledge and the bike techs know what they are doing. They have a lot of bikes on the floor and have some good single speed knowledge and parts in stock, which is pretty rare. I used to live right around the corner from West End Bikes and in the mid 2000s did lots of bike rides including the week night rides and the Sunday Taco rides. After not riding my road bike (Specialized Allez) for about 10 years I felt this is the year to start back. Knowing that I would either start riding more and buy a new bike or go out a few times and hang my bike back in the garage. So in mid February I took bike in for an overhaul. The person at West End who looked at my bike told me that my shifters were "shot" and that he could get the bike up and running for about $300. He then proceeded to show me new bikes from $850 to $1200 and suggested I not waste my money on my existing bike. Not knowing what to do I went home. After putting in some tubes and riding a couple of rides, I took my bike to a different shop. I was then told my shifters were fine and for $57 they had my bike turned up and ready to ride. It is now end of May, I have put over 400 miles on bike, shifting and riding the hills of White Oak Bayou trails. My shifters are still working fine, my bike is still working fine. When people ask me where to get bike work done or interested in a new bike I don't mention West End any more and when it is time for me to buy a new bike (later this summer) I won't be shopping at West End. The shop that repaired my bike for $57 is six blocks from West End. read more

I show up to the shop after taking an expensive Uber from downtown to find out they post a note on the front door stating they no longer rent bikes;( They could have at least notified on yelp;( Why in a major city like Houston can one not rent a decent road bike? This bike shop is fast and friendly as advertised. They are about 1 mile from Houston's Memorial Park and they rent bicycles which is very convenient. Their master bike mechanic (Piam) builds some of the best wheels in the state of TX and has a vast knowledge of bikes old and new. They have a cool collection of vintage mountain and road bikes (that are not for sale), as well as a wide selection of bicycles for sale. I recommend this bike shop to all of my friends and will continue to do so. read more

I stopped by west end before moving back to Houston and wandered around the shop for a long time. They had every type of bike I had seen online and wanted to touch and ride in person. What made this place even more incredible was Blaine, he took all over the store and nerded out over bikes for an hour or so. He talked about riding bikes like a person who enjoys being on a bike and just wants to spread that gospel. I returned to months later just to browse and ended up pulling the trigger on an sscx bike I had been wanting forever. After a weekend on the trail my wheels got a wobble from too much tire pressure, they true'd them on the spot. I just started riding again and decided to drop by to see if they could with a rubbing rear brake and a stripped pedal bolt. I expected that I'd have to leave the bike overnight and would end up out $50 bucks or more but they went to work on it right away, spent about 15-20 minutes getting it right, and then didn't charge me a thing.
